The paper examines factors behind the expansion of overeducation incidence among tertiary educated workers in Poland, which grew by up to 8 percentage points from 2006–2020. It is one of the first attempts in the literature to explain changes in overeducation incidence using age, cohort, and period effects simultaneously. The study finds a strong upward cohort shift in the overeducation risk for workers born after 1970. It suggests that the overeducation expansion in Poland is a cohort-driven phenomenon and it affects more profoundly individuals who received their tertiary education after the collapse of communism. This research aims to determine the proportion of overeducated individuals with higher education levels compared to their colleagues who are graduates of associate, undergraduate, and postgraduate education but work at the same status in entry-level jobs. Overeducation rates in entry-level jobs in Türkiye were determined using the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) Household Labor Force Surveys (2014-2019) microdata set. The job analyst measure was used to determine the rate of overeducation. Logistic regression data analysis was conducted to classify the variables that predict the state of being overeducated with the TUIK 2019 Household Labor Force Survey. According to the findings, overeducation rates increased gradually over the years by 8.02% in 2014, 8.98% in 2015, 9.78% in 2016, 10.43% in 2017, 11.00% in 2018, and 12.5% in 2019. For the state of being overeducated, various demographic variables were analyzed and predicted, such as income, age, region, gender, ISCED, marital status, firm size, place of work, additional job searches, ISCO 08 classification, and employment status.

This paper develops a distance score that measures the extent to which college graduates work in jobs requiring knowledge that is related to their college major. For a given individual, this distance score is estimated by taking the Euclidean distance between the knowledge requirements of an individual's occupation, and the knowledge requirements of the perfectly matching occupations that their major trains individuals for. Using this measure, it is documented that non-perfectly matched graduates of majors with high perfect match rates tend to use major-related knowledge in their jobs to a greater extent than non-perfectly matched graduates of majors with low perfect match rates. This indicates that cross-major differences in perfect match rates tend to understate cross-major differences in major-related knowledge use. Furthermore, average hourly earnings are found to be continuously decreasing in the value of the distance score. Using a sample of bachelor degree holders from the Canadian Census, this paper estimates the earnings premium that a university graduate receives from working in an occupation that requires knowledge that is related to their field of study. This is accomplished by developing an alignment score which measures the similarity between the knowledge requirements of an individual's actual occupation, and the knowledge requirements of the occupations that their field of study trains individuals for. While controlling for field of study and occupation fixed effects, the results indicate that a one standard deviation improvement in the knowledge-alignment between one's occupation and field of study produces an earnings premium of approximately 4.3%. This indicates that well-aligned graduates earn more than graduates from the same field of study who work in otherwise similar paying occupations that are less closely aligned with the field of study. This paper analyses changes in overeducation incidence in Poland in 2006‑2014. It finds that a rise in number of tertiary educated workers outpaced an increase in number of jobs requiring tertiary education, which resulted in a substantial growth of overeducation incidence. The overeducation increase was driven mainly by mild overeducation rather than severe overeducation. Overeducated workers are usually young with little job experience. Women are found at lower risk of severe overeducation compared to men, but relatively more at risk of mild overeducation. A low risk of overeducation is associated with having studied technical and health programmes.

We examine the effect of overeducation on wages by comparing two cohorts from the 1979 and 1997 U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth panels. Using an econometric technique uncommon to the literature, we allow for overeducation to have a disparate impact on wages across individuals by employing random slopes models. Overeducation has a positive marginal effect on wages. Yet, cohort comparisons reveal that the returns to overeducation declined dramatically over time. In the past, surplus schooling in full‐time jobs returned nearly as much as the correct level of education. Presently it returns approximately 50% less than in the past. This paper uses data from the 2004 to 2009 Living Conditions Survey (LCS) to analyze the wage gap between the adjusted and the overqualified employees in the Spanish regions using standard Mincer equations, quantile regression and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition. The results indicate that in Spain there is a 28% difference between the gross hourly wage between the overqualified and well-matched employees, of which 25 percentage points correspond to the discrimination effect and only three percentage points correspond to the characteristics of the individuals and the firms they work in. These results show that the effects of overeducation on the regional economies are genuine and substantial and present a considerable heterogeneity.
