Subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) is the resonance between a new energy generator set and a weak power grid, and the resonance frequency is usually the sub-/super-synchronous frequency. The eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) is a classic algorithm for extracting modal parameters based on matrix decomposition. By leveraging the ERA's simplicity and low computational cost, an enhanced methodology for identifying the key parameters of SSO is introduced. The enhanced algorithm realizes SSO angular frequency extraction by constructing an angular frequency fitting equation, enabling efficient identification of SSO parameters using only a 200 ms synchrophasor sequence. In the process of identification, the fitting-based ERA effectively addresses the limitation of the existing ERA. The accuracy of SSO parameter identification is improved, thereby realizing that SSO parameter identification can be carried out using a 200 ms data window. The fitting-based ERA is verified using synthetic and actual data from synchrophasor measurement terminals. The research results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately extract fundamental and subsynchronous or supersynchronous oscillation parameters, effectively realizing dynamic real-time monitoring of subsynchronous oscillations. The subsynchronous oscillation caused by the resonance between power electronic devices and series compensation devices or weak power grids introduced by large-scale renewable energy generation greatly reduces the transmission capacity of the system and may endanger the safe operation of the power system. It even leads to system oscillation instability. In this paper, based on the advantages of a simple solution, a small amount of calculation and anti-noise of ERA, a method of subsynchronous oscillation parameter identification based on the eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) is proposed. The Hankel matrix in the improved ERA is obtained by splicing the real part matrix and the imaginary part matrix of the synchrophasor, thus solving the problem of angular frequency conjugate constraints of two fundamental components and two oscillatory components which are not considered in the existing ERA. The solution to this problem is helpful to improve the accurate parameter identification results of ERA under the data window of 200 ms and weaken the limitation caused by the assumption that the synchrophasor model is fixed. The practicability of the improved method based on PMU is verified by the synthesis of ERA and the actual measurement data. Compared with the existing ERA, the improved ERA can accurately identify the parameters of each component under the ultra-short data window and realize the dynamic monitoring of power system subsynchronous oscillation. Aiming at the problem of ultra-low-frequency oscillation (ULFO) in power systems, with an oscillation frequency lower than 0.1 Hz, an oscillation suppression control method is proposed. Firstly, the mathematical modeling of the system is carried out, and a cascade correction control method of the governor of hydropower generators is proposed. Secondly, using the ability of photovoltaic (PV) active power to adjust the system frequency, an additional controller for PV active power is proposed. Then, a unified frequency model considering the two controllers is established for multi-hydro and multi-PV systems, and the structural singular value method is used to coordinate the design of the parameters of the hydropower and PV generator controllers to achieve robust performance. Finally, based on a time-domain simulation of single-hydro and single-PV systems and an actual demonstration system located in Sichuan Province, China, the results show that the control method proposed in this paper has a good suppression effect on ultra-low-frequency oscillation under different working conditions, and meets the requirements of robust performance. The ultra‐low frequency oscillation and poor speed regulation performance caused by the fast power control decrease the stability and efficiency of the variable speed pumped storage unit with a full size converter (FSC‐VSPSU). This paper presents a fast frequency control strategy to solve this problem. The small‐signal model of the FSC‐VSPSU in fast frequency mode is established, and the key parameters for the system stability are studied by the eigenvalue method. Aiming at the coupling oscillation mode caused by the governor and generator side converter (GSC), the corresponding control parameters optimisation method is proposed. In order to solve the power anti‐regulation problem, the strategy of combining rotor kinetic energy release, power slope adjustment, and delay acceleration control is proposed. PSCAD and RTDS simulation results show that the proposed strategy can effectively avoid the ultra‐low frequency oscillation caused by the fast power control and significantly improves the frequency and power control performance. • This paper establishes a small signal model of variable speed pumped storage unit with full size converter. • The oscillation modes and key influencing factors are clarified. • A coordinated control strategy for suppressing the ultra-low frequency oscillation is proposed. The research on control strategies of the variable speed pumped storage unit with full size converter (FSC-VSPSU), mainly focuses on the rapidity of power regulation. But the speed oscillation and slow speed regulation performance caused by fast power regulation are ignored, which is not conducive to the safe and efficient operation of the unit. This article investigates the dynamic stability characteristics of the FSC-VSPSU in detail. In turn, the stability risks are clarified and serve for the design of its control strategy and the improvement of operational efficiency. The small-signal model of FSC-VSPSU considering the variation of water head and load in fast power mode is established. The dominant instability control link and key parameters are revealed based on the eigenvalue analysis. Oscillation mode analysis shows that the unit has a wide-band oscillation characteristic. The dominant oscillation mode is the ultra-low frequency oscillation (ULFO) caused by the governor control system. To suppress the ULFO and improve the optimal speed tracking performance of the unit to the greatest extent, a coordinated control strategy of governor variable parameter control and governor power system stabilizer (GPSS) is proposed. The central Tibet AC interconnection project (CTAIP), which connects the Tibet power grid and the Sichuan power grid through a long distance transmission line of more than 1400 km, has a significant problem of voltage regulation. In order to improve the voltage regulation performance, six sets of ±60 Mvar static VAR compensators (SVC) were installed in the CTAIP. However, the SVCs may lead to electromagnetic oscillation below 50 Hz while improving voltage regulation capability. In this paper, the electromagnetic oscillation modes and the sensitivity of control parameters of SVC are analyzed. Then, the characteristics and influencing factors of the oscillation are discussed. It was found that there is an inherent electromagnetic oscillation mode below 50 Hz in the ultra-long distance transmission system. The employ of SVCs weaken the damping of this mode. Large proportional gain and integral gain (PI) parameters of SVCs can improve the voltage regulation performance, but weaken the electromagnetic oscillation mode damping. Therefore, a suppression method based on SVC PI parameters optimization is proposed to damp the oscillation. The essential of this method is to use the rising time of voltage response and setting time of SVCs as performance indicators of voltage regulation, and take the damping level of the electromagnetic oscillation mode as the performance index of SVC electromagnetic oscillation suppression ability. Combining the two indicators to form a comprehensive optimization index function, an intelligent optimization algorithm is applied. The process of SVC parameter optimization and the steps of multi-SVC parameter optimization in large power grids is proposed. Finally, PSCAD and real-time digital simulation (RTDS) simulation results verified the correctness of the proposed method. The optimization strategy was applied to CTAIP.
