- Abstract
The subject of the article is the original sin, the sin of the first people - Adam and Eve - in the Orthodox tradition called the fall, corruption or most often the sin of the first parents. This fateful event, which took place at the dawn of human history, brought about repercussions that humanity still feels today. Over the centuries, the concept of the fall of Adam and Eve has given rise to many different concepts. The article deals with the concept of original sin according to the teaching of the Orthodox Church and presents the views of the Fathers of the Church and church writers on the act of creation of man, the state of man before the fall and the characteristics of the created human nature. Man created in the image and likeness of God failed to achieve the intended goal, which was divinization, which ultimately led to the fall. The fall brought about the mortality of man, which in turn gave all mankind the certain consequences of original sin itself. This has given rise to polemics over the centuries. Unlike the views of Western theologians such as St. Augustine, the creator of the doctrine of the heredity of original sin, Christian east according to Church Fathers as well as contemporary theologians has always held the position that the sin of the first parents is a personal sin of Adam and Eve, and their descendants only inherit its effects. The purpose of this paper is to show a different concept on the fall of the first people and to present an alternative point of view on the state of man after the fall, as well as to explain the discrepancies, among others, regarding the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is not recognized by the Orthodox Church. The paper explores Pascal’s idea according to which the teachings of the Church assume the hiddenness of God, and, hence, there is nothing surprising in the fact of the occurrence of nonresistant nonbelief. In order to show it the paper invokes the doctrines of the Incarnation, the Church as the Body of Christ, and the Original Sin. The first one indicates that there could be greater than nonbelief obstacle in forming interpersonal bonds with God, namely the ontological chasm between him and human persons. The assumption of the human nature by the Son of God could be seen as a cure for this problem. The doctrine of the Church shows it as an end in itself, and in order for the Church to have meaning and to exist there has to be nonbelief in the world. Finally, the dogma of the Original Sin shows that there is no category of purely nonresistant nonbelief. The paper also addresses Schellenberg’s “accommodationist strategy” from the perspective of the Christian theology and in the last part it investigates what should be the influence of the fact of the hiddenness on theology’s take on the divine revelation.

The eternal damnation is the first consequence of original sin. This truth has been confirmed by the Church through centuries, issuing unequivocal judgments in this matter, which remain valid until today. The teaching of the synod in Carthage (411), which speaks directly of the eternal condemnation of people who died in original sin, is confirmed by successive synods, councils and contemporary documents of the Church. This is also the teaching of the Catechism. The fundamental problem is that Magisterium links the teaching of original sin with the unscientific truth about human origins present on the pages of the Bible. At the same time, learning about original sin is the indispensable basis for the preaching of salvation. The conflict (or at least the tension) between science and faith is obvious, and the attempts made do not seem to notice the essence of the problem or it is treated in a banal way. It is difficult to justify, however, that it is the result of the offence of one human couple. Therefore, it is necessary to debate the reality of „original sin“ and to reconcile it with the modern state of knowledge.

Podobne poglądy, usprawiedliwiające Boga (teodycea) były rozpowszechnione w wiekach średnich, m.in. rozwijane w dziewiątym wieku w teologii Jana Szkota Eriugeny (panenteizm).

The idea of the fall in pre-existence is one of Origen’s best-known concepts. According to his hypothesis, God created all spiritual beings, rational and free, before the beginning of time. Those beings turned away from God and fell as a result. Their fall gave rise to the creation of the material world. Origen thus explains the fact that, even before they deserve to be punished or rewarded, people do not have equal conditions for living from the moment they are born. The idea of the fall in pre-existence helped Origen to reconcile that inequality with the recognition of God’s omnipotence and justice. It also provided a vital point for his polemics against the Gnostics. The theory, however, does not appear in his first homily on the Book of Genesis, providing a commentary on the biblical description of creation – a text where a reference to the fall in pre-existence would be well-grounded. It praises the creation of the material world and man as the crown of creation. The homily presents the distinction between the inner and the outer man, which is typical of Origen, however, it contains no hints to the fall as the cause for creating the sensuous world and the outer man. One of the reasons for such absence might be that Origen did not perceive his theory as vital for the spiritual growth of Christians, he only used it as an element of polemics with the Gnostics. As Origen stressed himself, his thought was always open and searching, thus such inconsistency and selectivity of his approach to the idea of the fall in pre-existence does not seem unusual. If this is a correct conclusion, then the idea of the fall in pre-existence is distinctly different from the Western concept of the original sin.
