The straightforward synthesis of the cationic, purely organometallic Ni(I) salt [Ni(cod)2](+)[Al(OR(F))4](-) was realized through a reaction between [Ni(cod)2] and Ag[Al(OR(F))4] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). Crystal-structure analysis and EPR, XANES, and cyclic voltammetry studies confirmed the presence of a homoleptic Ni(I) olefin complex. Coordination of the redox-active tridentate NNO ligand L(H2) to Pd(II) yields the paramagnetic iminobenzosemiquinonato complex 3. Single-electron reduction of 3 yields diamagnetic amidophenolato complex 4, capable of activating aliphatic azide 5. Experimental and computational studies suggest a redox-noninnocent pathway wherein the redox-active ligand facilitates intramolecular ligand-to-substrate single-electron transfer to generate an open-shell singlet "nitrene-substrate radical, ligand radical", enabling subsequent radical-type C-H amination reactivity with Pd(II).

Cobalt(III)-carbene radicals, generated through metalloradical activation of salicyl N-tosylhydrazones by cobalt(II) complexes of porphyrins, readily undergo radical addition to terminal alkynes to produce salicyl-vinyl radical intermediates. Subsequent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the hydroxy group of the salicyl moiety to the vinyl radical leads to the formation of 2H-chromenes. The Co(II)-catalyzed process can tolerate various substitution patterns and produces the corresponding 2H-chromene products in good isolated yields. EPR spectroscopy and radical-trapping experiments with TEMPO are in agreement with the proposed radical mechanism. DFT calculations reveal the formation of the salicyl-vinyl radical intermediate by a metalloradical-mediated process. Unexpectedly, subsequent HAT from the hydroxy moiety to the vinyl radical leads to formation of an o-quinone methide intermediate, which dissociates spontaneously from the cobalt center and easily undergoes an endocyclic, sigmatropic ring-closing reaction to form the final 2H-chromene product.

We herein report on the application and structural investigation of a new set of complexes that contain bidentate N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and primary amine moieties of the type [M(arene)Cl(L)] [M=Ru, Ir, or Rh; arene=p-cymene or pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; L=1-(2-aminophenyl)-3-(n-alkyl)imidazol-2-ylidine]. These complexes were tested and compared in the hydrogenation of acetophenone with hydrogen. Structural variations in the chelate ring size of the heteroditopic ligand revealed that smaller chelate ring sizes in combination with ring conjugation in the ligand are beneficial for the activity of this type of catalyst, favoring an inner-sphere coordination pathway. Additionally, increasing the steric bulk of the alkyl substituent on the NHC aided the reaction, showing almost no induction period and formation of a more active catalyst for the n-butyl complex relative to complexes with smaller Me and Et substituents. As is common in hydrogenation reactions, the activity of the complexes decreases in the order Ru>Ir>Rh. The application of [Ru(p-cym)Cl(L)]PF6 , which outperforms its reported analogues, has been successfully extended to the hydrogenation of more challenging biomass-inspired substrates., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Copolymerisation of carbenes and olefins (ethene), mediated by Rh-based catalyst precursors, is presented as a new, proof-of-concept methodology for the controlled synthesis of functional polymers. The reactions studied show that olefin-carbene polymerisation reactions provide a viable alternative to more traditional olefin polymerization techniques. Rh(III)-catalyst precursors, while active in the homopolymerisation of either olefins or carbenes, proved to be virtually inactive in olefin-carbene copolymerization. Conversely, the use of Rh(I)(cod) catalyst precursors allows the synthesis of high molecular-weight, highly functionalized copolymers. The reactions yield a mixture of copolymers and some carbene homopolymers, which proved to be difficult to separate. Polyethylene was not formed under the applied reaction conditions. The average ethene content in this mixture could be increased up to 11%, although analysis of the mixture revealed that the ethene content in fractions of the copolymer mixture can be as high as 70%. Attempts to increase the ethene content by increasing the ethene pressure unexpectedly led to lower average ethene contents, which is most likely due to changes in the ratio of copolymers vs. carbene homopolymer. This behaviour is most likely a result of the reactivity difference of different active Rh-species formed under the applied reaction conditions. Apparently, higher ethene concentrations slow down the copolymerisation process (mediated by yet unidentified Rh-species) compared to the formation of homopolymers (mediated by different Rh-catalysts; most likely (allyl)Rh(III)-alkyl species), thereby changing the product ratio in favour of the homopolymer. The average ethene content in the copolymer mixture therefore decreases, while the ethene content within the copolymer fraction has likely increased at higher ethene concentrations (but simply less copolymer is formed). The obtained copolymers exhibit a blocky microstructure, with the functional blocks being highly stereoregular. Branching does occur and the functional groups are present in the polymer backbone as well as at the branches. Formation of copolymers was confirmed by Maldi-ToF analysis, which revealed incorporation of several ethene units into the copolymers.

The first example of an iridium(I) species bearing a terminal phosphido (PR(2)(-)) ligand is reported. This stable compound shows well-behaved reactivity toward various electrophiles, owing to its exposed phosphorus lone pair, allowing reversible protonation, selective alkylation, isolation of a phosphidoborane of iridium, and generation of a phosphido-bridged iridium(I)-gold(I) dinuclear species.

The preparation and comprehensive characterization of a series of homoleptic sandwich complexes containing diphosphacyclobutadiene ligands are reported. Compounds [K([18]crown-6)(thf)(2)][Fe(η(4)-P(2)C(2)tBu(2))(2)] (K1), [K([18]crown-6)(thf)(2)][Co(η(4)-P(2)C(2)tBu(2))(2)] (K2), and [K([18]crown-6)(thf)(2)][Co(η(4)-P(2)C(2)Ad(2))(2)] (K3, Ad = adamantyl) were obtained from reactions of [K([18]crown-6)(thf)(2)][M(η(4)-C(14)H(10))(2)] (M = Fe, Co) with tBuC[triple bond]P (1, 2), or with AdC[triple bond]P (3). Neutral sandwiches [M(η(4)-P(2)C(2)tBu(2))(2)] (4: M = Fe 5: M = Co) were obtained by oxidizing 1 and 2 with [Cp(2)Fe]PF(6). Cyclic voltammetry and spectro-electrochemistry indicate that the two [M(η(4)-P(2)C(2)tBu(2))(2)](-)/[M(η(4)-P(2)C(2)tBu(2))(2)] moieties can be reversibly interconverted by one electron oxidation and reduction, respectively. Complexes 1-5 were characterized by multinuclear NMR, EPR (1 and 5), UV/Vis, and Mössbauer spectroscopies (1 and 4), mass spectrometry (4 and 5), and microanalysis (1-3). The molecular structures of 1-5 were determined by using X-ray crystallography. Essentially D(2d)-symmetric structures were found for all five complexes, which show the two 1,3-diphosphacyclobutadiene rings in a staggered orientation. Density functional theory calculations revealed the importance of covalent metal-ligand π bonding in 1-5. Possible oxidation state assignments for the metal ions are discussed.

The mechanism of cobalt(II)-porphyrin-mediated cyclopropanation of olefins with diazoesters was studied. The first step--reaction of cobalt(II)-porphyrin with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA)--was examined using EPR and ESI-MS techniques. EDA reacts with cobalt(II)-porphyrin to form a 1:1 Co(por)(CHCOOEt) adduct that exists as two isomers: the 'bridging carbene' C' in which the 'carbene' is bound to the metal and the pyrrolic nitrogen of the porphyrin that has a d(7) configuration on the metal, and the 'terminal carbene' C in which the 'carbene' behaves as a redox noninnocent ligand having a d(6) cobalt center and the unpaired electron residing on the 'carbene' carbon atom. The subsequent reactivities of the thus formed 'cobalt carbene radical' with propene, styrene, and methyl acrylate were studied using DFT calculations. The calculations suggest that the formation of the carbene is the rate-limiting step for the unfunctionalized Co(II)(por) and that the cyclopropane ring formation proceeds via a stepwise radical process: Radical addition of the 'carbene radical' C to the C=C double bonds of the olefins results in formation of the gamma-alkyl radical intermediates D. Species D then easily collapse in almost barrierless ring-closure reactions (TS3) to form the cyclopropanes. This radical mechanism readily explains the high activity of Co(II)(por) species in the cyclopropanation of electron-deficient olefins such as methyl acrylate.

A method is presented to design magnetic molecules in which the exchange interaction between adjacent metal ions is controlled by electron density withdrawal through their bridging ligands. We synthesized a novel Mn(4) cluster in which the choice of the bridging carboxylate ligands (acetate, benzoate, or trifluoroacetate) determines the type and strength of the three magnetic exchange couplings (J(1), J(2), and J(3)) present between the metal ions. Experimentally measured magnetic moments in high magnetic fields show that, upon electron density withdrawal, the main antiferromagnetic exchange constant J(1) decreases from -2.2 K for the [Mn(4)(OAc)(4)] cluster to -1.9 K for the [Mn(4)(H(5)C(6)COO)(4)] cluster and -0.6 K for the [Mn(4)(F(3)CCOO)(4)] cluster, while J(2) decreases from -1.1 K to nearly 0 K and J(3) changes to a small ferromagnetic coupling. These experimental results are further supported with density-functional theory calculations based on the obtained crystallographic structures of the [Mn(4)(OAc)(4)] and [Mn(4)(F(3)CCOO)(4)] clusters.

Treatment of [Ir(bpa)(cod)](+) complex [1](+) with a strong base (e.g., tBuO(-)) led to unexpected double deprotonation to form the anionic [Ir(bpa-2H)(cod)](-) species [3](-), via the mono-deprotonated neutral amido complex [Ir(bpa-H)(cod)] as an isolable intermediate. A certain degree of aromaticity of the obtained metal-chelate ring may explain the favourable double deprotonation. The rhodium analogue [4](-) was prepared in situ. The new species [M(bpa-2H)(cod)](-) (M = Rh, Ir) are best described as two-electron reduced analogues of the cationic imine complexes [M(I)(cod)(Py-CH(2)-N=CH-Py)](+). One-electron oxidation of [3](-) and [4](-) produced the ligand radical complexes [3](*) and [4](*). Oxygenation of [3](-) with O(2) gave the neutral carboxamido complex [Ir(cod)(py-CH(2)-N-CO-py)] via the ligand radical complex [3](*) as a detectable intermediate.

New Rh(I)(cod) complexes of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands containing a pending pyridyl moiety for subsequent binding of Zn(II)-templates were designed for supramolecular catalyst control in 'carbene polymerization' reactions. Zn(II)-templates indeed have an influence on the yields and the polymer molecular weights (and weight distributions) produced by these 'supramolecular assemblies'. However, control experiments reveal that the effect of the Zn(II)-template on the polymerization results is general and not due to the assembly formation.

A series of new metalloradical rhodium and iridium complexes [M(II)(cod)(N-ligand)](2+) in the uncommon oxidation state +II were synthesized by one-electron oxidation of their [M(I)(cod)(N-ligand)](+) precursors (M=Rh, Ir; cod=(Z,Z)-1,5-cyclooctadiene; and N-ligand is a podal bis(pyridyl)amine ligand: N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (dpa), N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine (pla), or N-benzyl-N,N-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine (Bn-dla). EPR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations reveal that each of these [M(II)(cod)(N-ligand)](2+) species adopts a square-pyramidal geometry with the two cod double bonds and the two pyridine fragments in the basal plane and the N(amine) donor at the apical position. The unpaired electron of these species mainly resides at the metal center, but the apical N(amine) donor also carries a considerable fraction of the total spin density (15-18 %). Density functional calculations proved a valuable tool for the analysis and simulation of the experimental EPR spectra. Whereas the M(II)(olefin) complexes are quite stable as solids, in solution they spontaneously transform into a 1:1 mixture of M(III)(allyl) species and protonated M(I)(olefin) complexes (in the forms [M(I)(olefin)(protonated N-ligand)](2+) for M=Rh and [M(III)(H)(olefin)(N-ligand)](2+) for M=Ir). Similar reactions were observed for the related propene complex [M(II)(propene)(Me(2)tpa)](2+) (Me(2)tpa=N,N,N-tris(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine). The decomposition rate of the [M(II)(cod)(N-ligand)](2+) species decreases with increasing N-ligand bulk in the following order: dpa>pla>Bn-dla. Decomposition of the most hindered [M(II)(cod)(Bn-dla)](2+) complexes proceeds by a second-order process. The kinetic rate expression v=k(obs)[M(II)](2) in acetone with k(obs)=k'[H(+)][S], where [S] is the concentration of additional coordinating reagents (MeCN), is in agreement with ligand-assisted dissociation of one of the pyridine donors. Solvent coordination results in formation of more open, reactive species. Protonation of the noncoordinating pyridyl group increases the concentration of this species, and thus [H(+)] appears in the kinetic rate expression. The kinetic data are in agreement with bimolecular hydrogen-atom transfer from M(II)(cod) to another M(II) species (DeltaH( not equal)=11.5+/-2 kcal mol(-1), DeltaS( not equal)=-27+/-10 cal K(-1) mol(-1), and DeltaG( not equal)(298 K)=19.5+/-5 kcal mol(-1)).
