This study examines the association between the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and firm risk in U.S. financial firms. We find a significant negative association between the composite ESG performance and total, idiosyncratic, and systematic risks after controlling for firm and year fixed effects and other risk predictors. We also examine the effect of each pillar of ESG on this relationship and find that "S" and "G" exhibit a significant negative relationship with both systematic and idiosyncratic risks of firms, while "E" is only associated with systematic risk. Lastly, we demonstrate that ESG performance is negatively associated with the extent to which leverage contributes to firm risk, supporting our premise that ESG alleviates financial risk. For decades, research on the relationship between environmental sustainability and firm performance focused on determining whether the effect of the former on the latter was positive or negative. That potentially controversial approach had driven mainstream research to ask two focal questions: Does it pay to be green? and Does it cost to be green? Recent papers have explored a curvilinear effect (i.e., U-shaped and inverted U-shaped) by tackling another question: When does it pay to be green? These efforts, however, have either oversimplified the complex linkage between these two things into a linear relationship or confined the complexity within a formatted frame. This paper overcomes these shortfalls by exploring the holistic effect of environmental sustainability on firm performance, contingent upon corporate reputation. In conjunction with direct effect analysis, this paper uniquely explores the synergistic effect of environmental sustainability and corporate reputation on performance. In addition to detecting the nonlinear synergy pattern, we found that the synergy effect is asymmetric. Specifically, the effect is complementary for low-reputation firms but substitutive for high-reputation firms. Purpose: This study aims to explore the strategic impact of R&D and export activity on the diverse dimensions of US manufacturing firms' performance. It also explores, using a predictive analytic model, the interactive synergistic effect that R&D and exports have on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: This study presents an innovative two-stage regression-neural network approach. Complementing conventional statistical analysis, the predictive backpropagation neural network explores the relative impact of R&D and exports and their synergistic effect on firm performance. Findings: This study demonstrates the significant and positive effect of R&D and export strategy/activity on the economic performance of leading US manufacturing firms, particularly on their market-based performance (i.e. sustained growth rate or SGR). Furthermore, this study finds that the synergistic effect of R&D and exports on short-term performance (i.e. return on investment) is positive in high-tech firms but negative in low-tech firms. However, the synergistic effect on SGR is increasingly positive regardless of the level of technology. Originality/value: In addition to traditional statistical analysis, this study uniquely investigates the relative importance of selected strategic variables, along with R&D and export activity and their differential synergistic effects, for firms' economic performance in contrasting industry settings (high-tech vs low-tech).
