We investigate the impact of diversity and inclusion (D&I) on firm performance for the period 2017–2021. While the existing literature examines the relationship between diversity and firm performance, little is known about the combined effects of D&I on firm performance. This study aims to utilize the most widely used data source, the Global Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Index, provided by the LSEG workspace. Using 8089 firm-year observations from a sample of globally listed firms and an OLS regression model, we find that firms with a higher D&I score have better firm performance, as measured by Tobin's Q. Our moderating analysis shows that the impact of D&I on firm performance is more pronounced for firms with higher institutional ownership. We also split institutional ownership into domestic and foreign institutional ownership and show that the influence of D&I on firm performance differs between domestic and foreign institutional ownership. Our result is robust when we use an alternative proxy for firm performance and consider the findings without US firms in the sample. The overall findings indicate that considering a diverse and inclusive workforce is worthwhile for key stakeholders when making policy decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regulatory focus theory theorizes that there are two distinct dispositional foci of self-regulation (promotion focus and prevention focus) that impact individuals' motivational tendencies to achieve their decision-making processes. This study integrates regulatory focus theory with upper echelons theory to investigate how CEO regulatory focus (i.e., higher degrees of promotion focus relative to prevention focus) influences corporate strategic outcomes, particularly regarding the pursuit of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance and firm performance. This study uses data collected from the annual reports of S&P 1500 firms in the US from 2000 to 2018. Results show a negative association between CEOs who are predominantly promotion-focused and CSR performance. This negative association is diminished in firms with better corporate governance (i.e., higher CEO equity compensation and greater institutional ownership). The results also show that CSR plays a mediating role in the relationship between CEO regulatory focus and firm performance. These findings not only contribute to the existing literature by highlighting the role of CEO regulatory focus in shaping CSR initiatives but also shed light on its implications for firm performance. Heterogeneous institutional investors' shareholding preferences have been driven to change by the deepening of ESG investment philosophy. Therefore, we examine the impact of corporate ESG performance on institutional investors' shareholding preferences and its mechanism of action. We conduct mixed OLS and mediation effect tests using data on ESG responsibility scores and institutional investors' shareholding ratios of A‐share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2020 as samples. We find that corporate ESG performance can significantly and robustly increase institutional investors' shareholdings; the mediation effect analysis shows that overall corporate ESG performance contributes to increases in corporate book and market values, thus encouraging institutional investors to increase their shareholdings. The heterogeneity analysis shows that independent institutional investors attach more importance to corporate ESG responsibility performance, and long‐term institutional investors attach more importance to corporate environmental performance; moreover, institutional investors have more significant ESG shareholding preferences for Chinese SOEs. Our study can strengthen the encouragement of institutional investors to integrate ESG investment concepts from multiple perspectives, such as research and analysis, portfolio management, risk control, and due diligence management, to design and develop targeted ESG investment tools, give full play to the role of shareholders and guide the sound development of listed companies from the perspective of investment strategy objectives. Against the backdrop of sustainable development, enterprises, the general public, and regulatory bodies are exhibiting an escalating level of concern regarding the performance in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate governance collectively referred to as ESG (Environmental, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance). This research, from the vantage point of external fiscal policy, investigates the examination of the impact of tax incentives on corporate ESG performance. Drawing upon panel data spanning from 2010 to 2021 at the level of China's A‐share listed companies and grounded in the context of accelerated depreciation policy for fixed assets, this study commitment to both identify and empirically test the presence of a significant positive correlation between tax incentives and corporate ESG performance. Our analysis of the financial mechanism and the Research and Development (R&D) mechanism reveals that tax incentives are instrumental in alleviating the financing constraints faced by corporations, thereby augmenting their financial performance. Furthermore, they serve to intensify R&D efforts, thereby fostering the generation of green innovations. In conclusion, our findings underscore that tax incentive policies significantly enhance the ESG performance of enterprises with common institutional shareholdings, an effect attributed to the presence of governance and synergy effects. In addressing the challenges of climate change (CC), companies face the difficult task of reconciling long‐term environmental goals and short‐term financial interests. In this paper, we argue that that effective climate governance enables companies to balance both objectives, supporting a business case for CC action. For a sample of 832 multinationals for the period 2011–2020, the findings show that effective climate governance leads to higher corporate financial performance (FP) and this relationship is strengthen by better climate performance. Furthermore, effective climate governance is driven by the ownership of long‐term institutional investors, whose positive influence is reinforced by homogeneous distribution of their ownership. The study empirically investigates how the sustainability performance affects corporate performance through Leverage which is moderated by managerial and institutional ownership. This research employs verification analysis and data analysis techniques based on conditional process analysis. This paper investigates: (i) the effect of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) engagement and ownership attributes on firm performance and (ii) whether different ownership attributes (institutional, foreign, and state ownership) moderate the association between ESG engagement and firm performance. Employing an extensive sample from 22 emerging countries worldwide, we provide cross-country evidence that ESG engagement and its three pillars, i.e. environmental, social, and governance pillars, enhance firm performance, proxied with ROA and Tobin's Q. Moreover, institutional and foreign ownership positively impact firm performance. We present novel evidence that the positive impact of superior ESG engagement on firm performance is lower for higher institutional ownership companies than lower institutional ownership companies, but greater for higher foreign ownership companies than lower foreign ownership companies. We propose a conceptual framework to illustrate that when three conditions hold, institutional investors moderate a positive relation between corporate financial performance and corporate environmental performance. We explore heterogeneities across institution types to demonstrate the importance of each condition. The moderating effect works through the channels of expert consulting and effective monitoring. Our results have important policy and practical implications given the global trend of ownership concentration in institutional investors and the projection that by 2025, one out of three dollars under professional management will be invested in corporate social responsibility assets. This study looks at how executive compensation affects firm value and the extent to which this relationship is sensitive to managerial ownership and corporate governance factors. We use data from UK FTSE 100 firms for the period 2007–2012, generating a total of 578 firm‐year observations. Consistent with optimal compensation theory, we find that the managerial compensation –firm value is more sensitive to executives' ownership levels and other corporate governance indicators. Our results remain robust to alternative econometric models. We contribute to the literature on corporate governance and firm value. While the paper builds on the executive bonus compensation literature, it also furthers our understanding on the extent to which managerial ownership, institutional ownership, board size and non‐executive ownership matter in the executive bonus compensation—corporate value relationship with specific emphasis on UK FTSE 100 firms. Our second contribution is related to the moderating role of managerial (executive) ownership. We show that as executives residual interests go up, managers become more conscious of the firm's idiosyncratic risk, and hence lessen their aggressive investment and financing strategies culminating in lower firm value. This study empirically investigates the moderating effect of board activeness on the relationship between the structure of corporate ownership and firm performance. The objective was evaluated using the hierarchal panel regressions with data from non-financial companies of the Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2018, operationalizing the ownership structure as state ownership, associated companies, foreign ownership, ownership concentration, institutional ownership, and family ownership, and firm performance as operating performance, financial performance, and stock market performance. The findings of the study revealed that operating, financial, and stock market performance were favorably influenced by the ownership stakes of the state, associated concerns, institutions, and foreigners. Family interests proved to be diverse for the firm performance. The isolated effect of the board consistently uplifted the firm productivity, but its interactional impact with all the ownership stakeholders postulated differential outcomes for internal and external performance. This study examines the influence of board structure and ownership structure on a firm's financial performance in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry of Bangladesh. The data of this study is based on all listed companies in the pharmaceuticals and chemical industry on Dhaka Stock Exchange. Data was collected from the annual reports of the concerned industry from 2015 to 2020. To examine the data, the study has applied descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, VIF test, and the twostage least squares (2SLS) estimator using Eviews software. Based on existing empirical studies, seven major attributes (board size, board independence, board gender, managerial ownership, institutional ownership, audit committee size, and frequency of audit committee meetings) have been selected to identify their influence on a firm's performance. Findings from the study show that there is an insignificant negative relationship among board size, board gender, frequency of meetings, and the firm's finan cial performance but a significant relationship with board independence, institutional ownership, and frequency of meetings. The study has proposed that board size can be smaller but should be representative. This study will contribute to the literature on CG and profitability in an emerging economy like Bangladesh. In this article, we review recent archival research (66 studies) on the influence of institutional ownership (IO) heterogeneity on corporate sustainability. Relying on an agency‐theoretical framework, we differentiate between various types of IO and their nature. We found that most prior research concentrates on the impact of IO heterogeneity on corporate sustainability performance. Long‐term, sustainable, and foreign IO leads to better ESG/CSR outputs. Based on the business case argument for corporate sustainability, long‐term institutional investors moderate the positive link between corporate sustainability and future financial performance. We provide useful recommendations for future research by focusing on endogeneity concerns as methodological challenges and content‐related proposals for future research designs. Economists have long held that bringing firms under the umbrella of a common ownership structure creates monopolistic conditions that reduce competition. We challenge this view by investigating competition between firms in a nuanced manner. We examine the competitive and performance implications of "common institutional ownership," which occurs when an institutional investor owns a sizeable number of shares in two publicly traded firms. We argue that rival firms with common ownership structures will engage in dissimilar competitive action repertoires to avoid direct competition with each other. Competing aggressively, but with dissimilar action repertoires, allows rivals to maintain high levels of performance. Competing with dissimilar action repertoires also helps ensure that performance disparity between the two firms remains low. Using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimation technique based on a sample of 180 listed firms from 2008 to 2018, this study investigates the impact of institutional ownership on firm performance in the Bangladeshi setting. Consistent with the "active monitoring" view, the results indicate that both domestic and foreign institutional investors have a positive effect on firm performance measured by Tobin's Q and Return on Asset (ROA). In addition, this study explores whether the other corporate governance attributes—board size and board independence—operate as mediators between institutional ownership and firm performance. Purpose: This study aims to assess the effect of director board and audit committee attributes and ownership structure on firm performance. In general, resource dependency and agency theories have underlined the superior performance of firms equipped with stronger Corporate Governance (CG) versus those of deficient governance. Concurrently, the study delineated the provisions of ownership structure provision, specifically foreign ownership and institutional ownerships, thus describing the component denoting the structural significance in explicating firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: The current study implemented an empirical approach involving the construction of extensive CG measures thus, subjected to 81 non-financial firms listed on the Amman Stock Exchange spanning the period of 2014–2018. Findings: The current study identified the positive and significant relationship between the board of directors and audit committee characteristics with the firm performance measures tested, namely, return on equity (ROE) and Tobin's Q. In terms of ownership structure, both foreign and institutional ownerships yielded a significant and positive relationship with ROE. Meanwhile, Tobin's Q led to an insignificant and negative relationship between both ownership types and firm performance measures. Practical implications: The analytical outcomes substantiate the possibility of enhanced performance shown by growing global firms because of the implementation of CG mechanisms, specifically because of the practices resulting in minimised agency costs. Originality/value: The current study offers novel evidence detailing the impact of CG effectiveness towards performance and its implementation in emerging markets following the minimal amount of scholarly efforts on the topic. It is a timely contribution towards the current understanding of the relationship linking governance and performance for the purpose of ensuring the adoption and imposition of a strong corporate governance code by the government. This study aimed to examine the importance of shareholder identity in improving company performance during shock events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak poses threats and opportunities for businesses in various countries including Indonesia. Subsequently, companies must adapt to address the consequences of the economic disruption and lockdown policies imposed by the local government. The study sample comprised companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. Fixed effects model regression was employed to examine the effect of family, government, and institutional ownership on company performance. The results showed that family and institutional ownership positively affected company performance during the pandemic. The mechanisms of direct supervision and control by family members could potentially increase the benefits of their businesses. Furthermore, high institutional ownership makes the role of investors substantial in reducing business risk and increasing company performance. Furthermore, the results revealed that government ownership negatively affected company performance. As owners, the government has different strategic objectives, where companies are more oriented toward better public services than financial gains. Therefore, it is essential to consider the impact of shareholder involvement on company performance, especially during a pandemic because they are treated differently. The research suggests that organizations are responding and adapting to the uncertainties in the business environment they face through a variety of mechanisms, including developing public and corporate governance strategies to prepare for and respond to future emergencies. Using data from companies in Taiwan's electronics industry, this study examines the effect of corporate ownership on firm innovation efficiency and performance. We use a network-typed data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to calculate firm-level innovation efficiency, which is composed of the R&D efficiency and the commercialization efficiency, respectively. We find that overall innovation efficiency is positively correlated with institutional ownership and directors' ownership. In addition, R&D efficiency is positively associated with ROA and commercialization efficiency positively correlates with Tobin's Q. R&D efficiency partially mediates the relationship between ownership-control deviation and ROA. However, commercialization efficiency plays a mediating role for institutional ownership on a firm's Tobin's Q. Our findings point to a bright side of the role of corporate governance in terms of its effects on corporate innovation and the effects of such innovation, in turn, on firm performance. This study addresses a gap in the literature on corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) by investigating whether and how board independence and institutional ownership moderate the relationship between digital transformation and corporate social performance (CSP). We find that digital transformation increases CSP using a panel dataset of Chinese publicly listed firms between 2014 and 2018. Moreover, we show that this positive impact is more pronounced when firms have higher proportions of independent directors on the board and institutional owners. In the context of Chinese enterprises' privatization reforms, the relationships between ownership structure and optimal capital structure and between ownership structure and firm performance are worth attention. Using data on listed companies in China, this article uses the panel smooth transfer regression (PSTR) model and multiple regression models to test the nonlinear relationship between capital structure and firm performance. The optimal capital structure is calculated using the partial correlation function of the PSTR model, and the ownership structure–optimal capital structure relationship is analysed. This research found that (a) the effect of the debt‐to‐asset ratio on firm performance shows a nonlinear relationship with sudden changes in characteristics, and a debt‐to‐asset ratio interval exists that can significantly improve firm performance; (b) under the premise of the effect of ownership checks and balances, an increase in ownership concentration can improve the optimal capital structure; thus, enterprises can achieve effective operations with higher debt; (c) the promotion effect of ownership concentration on firm performance varies depending on a company's debt‐to‐asset ratio; and (d) different industries have different optimal capital structures. The raw materials industry has a high optimal capital structure. A series of robustness tests verify the robustness of these conclusions. This research enriches the theoretical interpretation of the optimal capital structure and provides new insights into the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance. The conclusions drawn by this article are helpful to enterprises making corresponding financial decisions and the government in formulating corresponding capital market systems. Purpose: The study aimed to examine the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on the performance of Egyptian firms listed in the Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX) between 2014 and 2016. Design/methodology/approach: We relied on agency theory and resource dependence theory to generate testable hypotheses and capture the empirical findings. We regressed various performance measures (Return on Assets; Asset Utilization Ratio, Tobin's Q) regarding governance mechanisms (institutional ownership, managerial ownership, board size, board frequent meetings, the presence of non-executive directors and female directors) while controlling for firm size, leverage, years of listing and market share. The study uses ordinary least square (OLS) and two stages least square (2SLS) regression analysis to address the possible endogenous impact of the firms' ownership structure. Findings: Board gender diversity, the managerial ownership and frequent board meetings positively influence the Egyptian firms' efficiency measured by assets utilization, while the institutional ownership and board size have negative effects. When using Tobin's Q, the managerial ownership shows a negative effect while institutional ownership and board size present positive effects. When using 2SLS regression, findings remained stable whereas non-executive directors showed a significant negative association with assets utilization. Practical implications: Policy makers are recommended to draft policies related to limiting the number of board members, diluting the government's indirect ownership of firms, empowering women in boardrooms and developing the skills needed for non-executive directors. Originality/value: To the best of our knowledge, our study is one of very few that address firms' performance after a period of political instability accompanied by a greater role for females in the boardrooms of Egypt. We analyze the effects of institutional cross-ownership of same-industry firms on product market performance and behavior. Our results show that cross-held firms experience significantly higher market share growth than do non-cross-held firms. We establish causality by relying on a difference-in-differences approach based on the quasi-natural experiment of financial institution mergers. We also find evidence suggesting that institutional cross-ownership facilitates explicit forms of product market collaboration (such as within-industry joint ventures, strategic alliances, or within-industry acquisitions) and improves innovation productivity and operating profitability. Institutional investors are the key investors in stock markets. Stock markets are influenced by these giants. We investigate the comparative institutional ownership structure in financial and non‐financial corporations. Institutional ownership structures are foreign, domestic, state, and private institutional ownership, which are examined against the corporate performance of 40 firms listed in Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2006 to 2016. Panel regression is applied to observe the results. Varied impacts for every category of institutional ownership in financial and non‐financial firms are evident. The findings of the study are robust, and potential investors can use this study for their future investment plans. Investor institutions can decide their future investment directions in Pakistan. Purpose: We examine the effect of institutional blockholders on the variability of firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: We use OLS regression models to estimate the effect of institutional blockholders on within-firm, over-time variability of firm performance. Findings: We find that firms with more institutional blockholders experience less variable firm performance. In particular, more institutional blockholders are associated with less variability of annual stock returns, ROA and the market-to-book ratio. We further explore several underlying mechanisms through with institutional blockholders reduce firm performance variability. We find that more institutional blockholders are associated with less variable capital expenditures and R&D investments, and less frequent acquisition activities. Research limitations/implications: A limitation of this paper is that our sample period only covers 1996–2006. Future studies can extend our research to a more recent period (e.g. 2009–2019) to test whether our findings remain valid in other periods. Practical implications: We document a significant relation between institutional blockholders and firm performance variability in this paper. However, we do not make any judgment as to whether firms should increase their institutional blockholders as it is unclear whether the caused reduction in risk-taking is socially efficient. We argue that the value implication of institutional blockholders depends on the existing blockholder structure and the different levels of risk appetite between the CEO and shareholders. Thus, the decision on the increase or decrease of institutional blockholders should be carefully made based on a firm's specific characteristics. Originality/value: This paper is a first study which examines the impact of the presence of institutional blockholders on the variability of firm performance, while most prior studies focus on the stock ownership of institutional blockholders and examine its impact on the level of firm performance. The primary objective of this study is to examine corporate governance and earnings management as a moderating variable effect on financial performance with the control variable size and growth. Institutional ownership, managerial ownership, and the proportion of independent boards of commissioners characterize corporate governance. Return on Assets is used to evaluate financial performance, whereas the Modified Jones Model is used to evaluate management. This study's population consists of manufacturing businesses listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, and information was obtained from 114 companies using 342 samples. The data reveal that institutional ownership has a large positive influence on financial performance, but management ownership has no impact and the percentage of independent board of commissioners has no impact on financial performance. Using two national culture dimensions, we show that the influence of firms' corporate social performance (CSP) on corporate financial performance (CFP) hinges on culture. Specifically, CFP is higher in those firms where CSR initiatives are congruent with the cultural environment. CSP has a negative impact on CFP for those firms domiciled in countries which are individualistic and favor flexibility. These findings are amplified for those firms with low levels of foreign influence in terms of institutional ownership and sales. Using a dataset covering 5334 firms from 41 different countries, our results indicate that culture and CSR initiatives have a powerful interaction effect in determining CFP, suggesting that CSP's impact is dependent upon the culture of the country where the firm resides. The paper studies the impact of Domestic Institutional Ownership (DIO) upon firm performance in India using panel data for NSE 500 companies from 2010 to 2016. The study finds DIO to have a positive impact on Tobin's Q in panel regressions-fixed effects after using controls such as firm age, size, leverage, marketing intensity, foreign institutional ownership and promoter ownership. The study also tests the impact of Mutual Fund Ownership (MFO) and the impact of Banks, Development Financial Institutions (DFI), Insurance companies' (BFII) ownership separately and found MF has a positive impact on Tobin's Q. The study observed that all variables DIO, MF and BFII had no impact on Return on Assets (ROA) but BFII is found to have a negative impact on Return on Equity (ROE). The study found a positive impact of Mutual Funds (MFs) and a negative impact of 'Banks, FIs and Insurance companies' on firm performance in India. The paper contributes to the empirical literature on institutional ownership and firm performance in emerging economies. Purpose: This study aims to test the asymmetric impact of institutional ownership on firm performance. This study does it through an examination of the hypotheses of efficient monitoring and convergence of interests from the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). Design/methodology/approach: Using a panel smooth transition regression model, as a new econometric technique, this paper examined the data to explore the asymmetric impact of institutional ownership on firm performance. With regard to 177 firms for the period 2009 to 2018 from TSE. Performance proxies are returned on asset (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and Tobins' Q. Findings: The empirical for three performance proxies results strongly rejected the null hypothesis of linearity and the test for no remaining nonlinearity indicated a model with one transition function and one threshold parameters. The first regime (levels of institutional ownership below 28.5% and 43.5% for ROA and Tobins' Q) showed that performance increases with institutional ownership while the trend was reversed in the second regime (levels of institutional ownership above 28.5% and 43.5% for ROA and Tobins' Q percent). Also, institutional shareholders percent between 4.2 and 14.1 explain the positive relationship between institutional shareholders and ROE. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of corporate board characteristics in the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance in the listed public limited companies of Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach: The study analyzed 527 annual reports of listed companies in Bangladesh for the years 2015-2017. The direct and indirect effect of ownership structure on firm performance was examined using AMOS 23. Baron and Kenny's (1986) four steps procedure was used to establish the mediating role of board characteristics. Findings: The results demonstrated that foreign ownership and director ownership have significant positive influence on both accounting and market based firm's performance, while institutional ownership exhibits positive influence only on accounting-based performance (return on assets). With respect to mediating effect, the results show that board size and board independence partially mediate the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance. Research limitations/implications: The major limitation of the study is that it focuses only on three years data in examining the hypothesized relationship among the variables. Practical implications: Investors, regulators and managers can get evocative insights, particularly who seek to improve their company's performance in the capital market through restructuring their ownership structure and board composition. We examine the effects of the speed of FDI expansions (SFEs) on the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the moderating role of ownership structure, highlighting how the relationship between SFEs and SME survival varies depending on the owners' identity and their potentially dissimilar interests. We argue and find in a study of Korean SMEs that the relationship between SFEs and SME survival exhibits an inverted U-shape. Moreover, SME survival peaks at a higher level of SFEs when family ownership is high, while SME survival peaks at a lower level of SFEs when institutional ownership is high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the relationship between corporate social performance and institutional ownership. We distinguish between long-term and short-term institutional investors using holdings-based measures which directly capture the investment horizon of each institution. Our analysis shows that long term institutional investment is positively related to corporate social performance (mainly by an avoidance of investing in firms with significant controversies) whereas short-term institutional investment is negatively related to corporate social performance. Further investigation reveals that increased holdings of a firm by long-term investors are positively associated with its future corporate social performance. Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of institutional ownership, audit committee and types of industry on environmental investment. Furthermore, this research investigates the consequences of environmental investments on firm financial performance. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 145 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchanges and receiving PROPER awards issued by the Ministry of Environment, Republic of Indonesia in the year 2009-2015. The data were then analyzed using ordinal logistic regression and multiple regression. Findings: The findings showed that environmental investment was significantly affected by types of industry. However, institutional ownership and audit committee did not influence environmental investment. Finally, the finding indicated that environmental investments positively affected firm financial performance. Research limitations/implications: This research only covered companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchanges and receiving PROPER awards. Thus, the findings cannot be generalized for all companies in Indonesia and other markets. Originality/value: This study is the first effort intended to investigate the determinants and consequences of environmental investment which have been ignored by previous studies, especially in the Asian emerging markets. This study at least provides us with two main contributions. First, the findings on determinants of environmental investment can be used by governments in Asian countries, especially Indonesia as a reference in making policies concerning the obligations of companies to the environmental problems. Little is known about how ownership affects accountability in non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This article explores differences between locally- and non-locally-owned NGOs in South Africa. Our data suggest that locally-owned NGOs more often claim to implement downward and internal accountability mechanisms, while non-local NGOs more often claim to implement upward accountability mechanisms. Bigger NGOs also perform better at downward and upward accountability mechanisms than smaller ones. The data suggest there is much these organisations can learn from each other to strengthen their accountability mechanisms. Furthermore, assuming there is a positive relationship between local ownership and development effectiveness, these findings may have important implications in furthering effective development interventions. Sustainability goals are a new trend among corporates as they play a significant role in attracting additional investments for entities that follow sustainability practices. The relationship between a corporate board's composition and the firm's performance has been well studied in the literature. However, the relationship between a firm's ownership structure and the firm's sustainability performance remains to be empirically unidentified for firms participating in mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as M&As lead to major board restructurings. Therefore, we considered Indian listed M&A-participating firms for the period 2013–2022 and the results reveal a positive association between institutional and foreign ownership and firms' sustainability performance, whereas promoters' ownership is negatively related. We study how corporate social responsibility relates to investors, firms, and shareholder proposals. We examine shareholder proposals on environmental, social, and governance issues at the annual general meeting of shareholders with US Fortune 250 firms during 2011-2014. We find that the probability of receiving shareholder proposals on environmental issues is positively associated with responsible institutional ownership. We find no systematic evidence that the outperformance regarding social responsibility of the firms themselves would significantly matter regarding the likelihood of shareholders filing proposals about corporate social responsibility, except for employee wellbeing. The purpose of the this paper is to study the relationship between types of ownership on intellectual capital performance (ICP) and its components in the companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange. The results show that there is a significant positive relationship between ownership concentration,corporate, institutional ownership and ICP and that state ownership is negatively associated with ICP. Moreover, individual ownership has no significant relationship with ICP. Intellectual capital paradigms require corporate governance members to think holistically about all the intangible resources that can be used to create value through both intra-organizational and extra-organizational relationships. Using a sample of Chinese listed firms in the period from 2003 to 2012, this paper empirically investigates how the presence of politically connected directors affects stock price crash risk. We thereby make a distinction between listed state-controlled firms and privately controlled firms due to their different incentives to appoint politicians as directors on the board. Our empirical results show that politically connected directors exacerbate stock price crash risk in listed state-controlled firms, an effect driven by the appointment of local government officials as directors. In contrast, hiring politicians as directors, particularly central-government-affiliated directors, helps listed privately controlled firms to reduce stock price crash risk. Finally, good quality of institutions does not help to alleviate the positive relationship between political connections and stock price crash risk in listed state-controlled firms. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance, including judicial system efficiency as a moderator to investigate the joint effects of both explanatory variables. Although prior studies have considered judicial system efficiency by examining de jure investor protection, this study identifies another useful proxy and explores de facto legal protection.Design/methodology/approach Ordinary least square multiple regression models were used to examine the influence of judicial efficiency, which was measured using the disposition time (DT) and legal origin, as a moderator of the relationship between ownership concentration and firm performance for a sample of 565 non-financial companies listed in Italy, France, Germany and Spain in 2013.Findings This paper shows that de facto investor protection ensured by an efficient judicial system is relevant to the relationship between firm performance and ownership structure. As a moderator variable, DT strengthens the intensity of this relationship in countries with low judicial efficiency, showing that ownership concentration leads to a better enhancement of firm performance and is, therefore, a more efficient governance mechanism in countries in which investor protection is weak.Originality/value The evidence presented expands the understanding of the link between firm performance and ownership structure. The institutional deficiencies suggest that internal governance mechanisms may substitute for external mechanisms in facilitating efficient governance. This study corroborates policymakers’ concerns regarding the efficiency of judicial systems and their role in protecting the rights of minority shareholders. The results suggest a need for more efficient external mechanisms of investor protection to facilitate investment in equity capital. This study examined the survival of multinational enterprises (MNE) in Vietnam during 2000-2011 using Cox hazard models. The characteristics and ownership structure of firms and the nationality of foreign partners are found to be associated with the probability of firm exit, with a firm having greater capital share of foreign partners surviving longer. An efficient local government requiring less time for bureaucratic procedures and inspections is found to be associated with a lower probability of MNE exiting. Purpose: This study is aimed at analyzing the influence of the size of the board of directors, audit committee, institutional ownership and managerial ownership on the financial performance of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Methodology: The study analyses 156 Indonesia firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange using linear regression analysis. Findings: The results indicated that the size of the board of directors has a positive effect on financial performance, while the size of the audit committee, institutional ownership and managerial ownership has no effect on the financial performance. While on the simultaneously testing, it showed that the size of the board of directors, audit committee size, institutional ownership and managerial ownership influence the financial performance. Research limitations/implications: The research has been limited to the manufacturing sector of Indonesian companies and the internal mechanism of corporate governance. The study suggests considering an external mechanism of corporate governance as predictor variables. Purpose Past studies show that companies’ connection with the government (or politically connected companies (PCCs)) contributed negatively to their financial performance. The grabbing hand theory suggests that political connection demand companies to serve political and social obligation that exhaust companies’ financial resources. The purpose of this paper is to extend the previous studies by examining the role of monitoring mechanisms, specifically corporate governance mechanism and institutional ownership (IO), whether they weaken or strengthen the financial performance of PCCs in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of all companies listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia (previously known as Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange) for the year of 2004-2007. The time periods were chosen because there were no significant economic and political events that could possibly distorted the financial and non-financial data.Findings The findings show that companies’ political connection (the presence of political figure or government representative as members of board of director) has consistently showing negative relationship with performance. The result is consistent with the grabbing hand theory that argues that companies’ connection with government would actually destroy companies’ value. The monitoring role of corporate governance as measured by the percentage of independent board members does not have any significant effect on firm’s performance. The monitoring role of corporate governance as measured by the composition of independent board members have shown a positive significant effect on the company’s performance. However the second monitoring mechanism, the percentage of institutional investors, have a tendency to weaken the company’s performance.Originality/value The findings of this study provide an additional understanding of the consequence of government intervention on companies’ performance. This study also highlights the role of monitoring mechanism (independence board members and IO) in strengthening or weakening the performance. The findings suggest that the proper appointment criteria for board members should be seriously considered to ensure better corporate governance structure. Therefore, the formation of the nomination committee as suggested by the current Malaysian Code of Corporate Governance play an important contribution to ensure candidates nominated as board members have proper credentials and qualifications to carry out responsibilities as board members. The role of institutional investors in corporate governance is widely recognized. This study investigates whether institutional investors are active monitors or passive investors by examining the relationship between institutional ownership and firm performance for a sample of 11,136 firm-year observations from 1,392 non-financial firms listed on the BSE from 2007 to 2014. It employs panel data regression models and instrumental variables regression using generalized method of moments to control for unobserved heterogeneity and possible endogeneity of ownership variables. The results reveal that institutional ownership has a positive impact on firm performance. Institutional ownership is disaggregated into domestic and foreign institutional ownership and it is observed that both the categories positively affect the firm performance. The findings suggest that institutional investors, whether domestic or foreign, are able to monitor managements' actions and decisions effectively and help to improve firm performance. This article examines enterprise performance in Russian oil companies between 1992 and 2012. The analysis is based upon longitudinal trend output data, and distinguishes between four different types of owners – outsider private, insider private, federal state and regional state. In comparison with previous studies which considered just 1999–2004, and identified outsider private companies as the best performers, this article finds that over the longer period 1992–2012 federal state and insider private-owned companies actually performed best. The development of an enterprise risk management (ERM) program enables companies to manage corporate risks in a holistic manner as opposed to the silo-based perspective in traditional risk management frameworks. One main question in this regard is what factors drive the implementation of an ERM system in companies and whether ERM programs can actually create value once implemented. This article addresses these questions by conducting a comparative assessment of empirical evidence from the literature regarding the determinants of ERM and its value once implemented. In doing so we are able to illustrate differences in model specifications and the underlying data. Our literature study shows that particularly the company size and the level of institutional ownership are significantly positively related to the implementation of ERM in most empirical studies and, furthermore, that ERM generally has a (significant) positive impact on corporate value and performance (to a different extent and depending on the focus of the studies).
