Pulp and paper companies are characterized by high‐energy consumption and high‐emission in production, placing a heavy burden on the environment. Exploring ways to improve their environmental performance is urgently needed. External coercive pressure from environmental law and internal proactive environmental strategy both enable companies to perform better, but little is known about the difference between them. To close this knowledge gap, our analysis is conducted on a case company in pulp and paper industry to compare the differential impacts of the New Environmental Protection Law of China and the proactive environmental strategy on its environmental performance. In addition, accurately evaluating the environmental performance of pulp and paper companies is essential while research on this topic is scant. Therefore, a novel environmental performance evaluation system for pulp and paper companies (EPESPP) is constructed, including not only internal but also external evaluation indexes based on news reports of various media measured by SNOWNLP sentiment analysis. According to the system, the environmental performance of the case company from 2010 to 2018 is evaluated by the entropy‐weight‐based catastrophe progression method (EWCPM). The results of our case study show that the implementation of a proactive environmental strategy is more conducive to comprehensively improving corporate environmental performance. Industrial firms in the EU have had to adapt over the past decades to face the increasing pressure of becoming more environmentally responsible. The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) has played a crucial role in this process, and its impact on participating firms is a matter of debate for researchers, corporate managers, and policy makers alike. Unfortunately, there are only a minimum of models that assess the impact of the EU ETS on individual firms, especially in the context of overall firm performance and dependencies on other (economic and social) factors. For the paper industry, such a study is completely lacking. The authors use the well-established framework of the CSR model and the DC-PROMETHEE method to explore the ranking of paper producing firms in the EU. DC-PROMETHEE considers the effect of the dependencies between criteria that can potentially distort the results. The study revealed that both the EU ETS itself and the links between the evaluating criteria have an impact on the final CSR ranking of the paper producing companies. Purpose: This paper aims to quantify the trend of variables used for building a theoretical model with the help of analysing bibliometrics data of inventory management (IM) and Total Quality Management (TQM) practices and their effects on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: Scopus' research database and the Web of Science (WoS) (including Elsevier, Emerald Group Publishing, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, IEEE, Informs and SAGE) were used to find relevant articles. The articles, review papers and conference proceedings were screened from 1993 to 2021. The articles were analysed to explain the different types of IM practices, TQM practices and their effect on the firm's performance. Thematic analysis was done using a bibliometric package of "R" (Biblioshiny) and VOSviewer to identify the key trends, approaches and research agenda. Findings: The research covered 28 years of publications and summarised 497 articles, review papers and conference papers. Researchers concluded that IM highly correlates with the inventory turnover ratio and has no relation to firm performance. Further, TQM positively affects firm performance, but integrating IM and TQM will be a research scope for future study as none of the researchers previously covered this. Research limitations/implications: Due to the systematic literature review (SLR) and Bibliometric review, the study is limited to the Scopus and WoS (including Elsevier, Emerald Group Publishing, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, IEEE, Informs and SAGE) databases.
