Social innovation of work and employment are prerequisites to achieve the EU2020 objectives of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It covers labour market innovation on societal level and workplace innovation on organisational level. This paper focuses on the latter. Workplace innovations are social both in their ends (quality of working life, well-being and development of talents together with organisational performance) and in their means (employee participation and empowerment). Complementary to technological innovations they regard innovations in social aspects of organisations such as work organisation, HRM and work relations. Workplace innovation – or innovative workplaces as it is sometimes called – deserves to be better incorporated in EU policies, as also has been recommended by the European Economic and Social Committee and the OECD. Some countries have experienced the benefits of national campaigns already.

Het boek omvat twaalf bijdragen van twintig verschillende TNO-specialisten en externe deskundigen. In deze bijdragen reflecteren deze auteurs over hoe sociale innovatie op dit moment in organisaties kan worden geïmplementeerd. Verschillende bijdragen richten zich op de stijgende flexibilisering in Nederlandse organisaties. Andere bijdragen richten zich op co-creatieprocessen. Daarmee worden centrale resultaten van het ETP-project Gedrag en Prestatie bij elkaar gebracht voor een breder publiek. De titel van het boek verwijst naar de wijziging die zich heeft voorgedaan in de benadering van sociale innovatie in de afgelopen tien jaar. Wil je nu sociale innovatie voor elkaar krijgen, dan is het onvoldoende om alleen in te zetten om de organisatorische vormgeving en condities. Van belang is hoe medewerkers zelf het initiatief nemen. Flexibilisering en co-creatie krijgen een andere lading als zelforganisatie en eigen verantwoordelijkheid een belangrijke rol krijgen. According to some theoretical approaches workplace innovation is the implementation of new and combined interventions in work organisation, HRM and supportive technologies, and a strategy that improves the performance of organisations and the quality of jobs. Using data from a large-scale survey among companies in the Netherlands, it is demonstrated that there indeed is a positive relationship between workplace innovation on the one hand, and quantitative and qualitative organisational performance and commitment of employees on the other. No relation was shown between workplace innovation and the risk of work stress as reported by the employer. A relatively large flexible buffer was positively related to performance, but not to employee commitment. The presence of IT to support the work processes did have a weak relation with performance but did not show to have any relation to employee commitment. The conclusion is that workplace innovation matters to performance and to people in organisations.
