Objectives: This systematic review aimed to analyse the published evidence for the use of non-invasive methods for the early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Methods: The literature was systematically searched through several databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Additional exploration was performed through cross-checks on the bibliographies of selected reviews. The inclusion criteria involved studies assessing the application of non-invasive tests on humans in the screening, diagnosis, or surveillance of OSCC or OPMDs and reporting sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP). The Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS) was applied to assess the quality of the studies included. Results: The search strategy resulted in 8012 preliminary records. After a duplicate check, 116 titles remained. After abstract analysis, 70 papers remained. After full text analysis, only 54 of the 70 papers fit the inclusion criteria (28 were original articles and 26 were reviews). Those 26 reviews were used to manually search for further original articles. From this last search, 33 original articles were found. Thus, a total of 61 original studies were included and investigated. Findings from this systematic review indicate useful information, such as a description of the mechanisms, ease of use, limitations, and SE and SP values, to drive the choice of the optimal minimally invasive method to be utilized as an adjunctive tool to examine the suspicious lesions. Conclusions: Each of the analysed tools can be improved or implemented, considering their high SE and low SP. Despite advancements, incisional biopsy continues to be the gold standard for the definitive diagnosis of oral cancer and precancerous lesions. Objective: This cross-sectional online questionnaire-based study evaluated the knowledge, awareness, and behaviors of dentists and senior dental students regarding oral cancer (OC). Materials and methods: This study included 168 dentists and senior dental students who had completed all theoretical educations and clinical practices. An online survey was administered to all participants to assess their awareness of the risk factors for OC, clinical knowledge, and behaviors. The participants' demographic characteristics and knowledge of OC were analyzed. Results: Of the participants, 48.8% were female and 51.2% were male. Their mean age was 27.04 ± 5.56 years (range: 21–51). In addition, 59.5% were dentists, and 40.5% were senior dental students. The dentists' mean time since graduation was 6.38 ± 5.64 years (range: 1–27). Routine oral mucosa examination for OC was significantly more frequent among the dentists than the senior dental students (p < 0.05). Among all participants, 33% of dentists and 51.5% of senior dental students had poor knowledge of OC-related or possibly predisposing factors. Routine evaluation of OC-related and predisposing risk factors, including human papillomavirus infection, smoking, alcohol use, trauma-related non-healing oral lesions caused by long-term incompatible prostheses, and poor oral hygiene, was significantly more frequent among the dentists than the senior dental students (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Educating dental students about a more comprehensive oral examination and early diagnosis of OC would help overcome the current lack of adequate knowledge and attitudes in OC prevention and early detection. Background: Despite the importance of regular dental visits for detecting oral cancer, millions of low‐income adults lack access to dental services. In July 2009, California eliminated adult Medicaid dental benefits. We tested if this impacted oral cancer detection for Medicaid enrollees. Methods: We analyzed Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results‐Medicaid data, which contains verified Medicaid enrollment status, to estimate a difference‐in‐differences model. Our design compares the change in early‐stage (Stages 0–II) diagnoses before and after dropping dental benefits in California with the change in early‐stage diagnoses among eight states that did not change Medicaid dental benefits. Patients were grouped by oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) and non‐OPC (oral cavity cancer), type, and the length of Medicaid enrollment. We also assessed if the effect of dropping dental benefits varied by the number of dentists per capita. Results: Dropping Medicaid dental benefits was associated with a 6.5%‐point decline in early‐stage diagnoses of non‐OPC (95% CI = −14.5, −3.2, p = 0.008). This represented a 20% relative reduction from baseline rates. The effect was highest among beneficiaries with 3 months of continuous Medicaid enrollment prior to diagnosis who resided in counties with more dentists per capita. Specifically, dropping dental coverage was associated with a 1.25%‐point decline in the probability of early‐stage non‐OPC diagnoses for every additional dentist per 5000 population (p = 0.006). Conclusions: Eliminating Medicaid dental benefits negatively impacted early detection of cancers of the oral cavity. Continued volatility of Medicaid dental coverage and provider shortages may be further delaying oral cancer diagnoses. Alternative approaches are needed to prevent advanced stage OPC. Background: Oral cancer is a significant global health concern with substantial morbidity and mortality rates. Early detection during routine dental check-ups is crucial for improved patient outcomes. Dental professionals play a pivotal role in conducting oral cancer screenings, but the frequency and methods they employ remain understudied. Aim: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the frequency of oral cancer screenings during routine dental check-ups conducted by dental professionals and the methods they commonly use. Materials and Methods: A survey was administered to 500 dental professionals, including dentists and dental hygienists, representing diverse demographics and practice settings. The survey collected data on the frequency of oral cancer screenings and the primary methods employed. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Results: The study found that 85% of dental professionals conduct oral cancer screenings during routine dental check-ups, with 48% performing them annually and 33% at every visit. Visual inspection (97%) and palpation (83%) were the most commonly used methods, while adjunctive screening tools (45%) were less frequently incorporated. Conclusion: Dental professionals are actively engaged in oral cancer screenings during routine dental check-ups, demonstrating a commitment to early detection. Purpose: Oral cancer is an underestimated health problem, and its existence and the relevant prevention measures are not sufficiently known by the general population. The project thus aimed to develop, implement and evaluate an oral cancer campaign in Northern Germany, and to increase problem awareness on various levels: draw public attention to the tumour by media coverage increase awareness of early detection opportunities for the target group, and raise awareness of carrying out early detection measures by the professional groups involved. Methods: For each level, a campaign concept was developed and documented in terms of content and timing. The identified target group was elderly educationally disadvantaged male citizens ≥ 50 years. The evaluation concept for each level included pre-, post- and process evaluations. Results: The campaign was carried out from April 2012 to December 2014. The issue of awareness within the target group was significantly increased. Media coverage showed that regional media adopted the topic of oral cancer and placed it on their published agenda. Furthermore, the continuous involvement of the professional groups over the course of the campaign led to an increased awareness of oral cancer. Conclusion: The development of the campaign concept with a comprehensive evaluation showed that the target group was successfully reached. The campaign was adapted to the required target group and specific conditions, and was also designed to be context sensitive. Progression of oral mucosal lesions is generally marked by changes in the concentration of the intrinsic fluorophores such as collagen, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and porphyrin present in the human oral tissue. In this study, we have probed the changes in FAD and porphyrin by exciting with 405 nm laser light on different sites (tongue, buccal mucosa, lip etc.) of the oral cavity. Testing has been done by an in-house developed fluorescence-based portable imaging device on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, dysplastic patients and control (normal) group. Fluorescence images recorded from OSCC and dysplastic patients have displayed an enhancement in the red band (porphyrin) as compared to those from the normal volunteers. Porphyrin to FAD intensity ratio (IPorphyrin/IFAD), referred to red to green ratio (Ired/Igreen) has been taken as the diagnostic marker for classification among the groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis applied on IPorphyrin/IFAD is able to discriminate OSCC to normal, dysplasia to normal and OSCC to dysplasia with sensitivities of 100%, 81%, 92% and specificities of 100%, 93% and 92% respectively. Fluorescence imaging probe can capture a large area of oral lesions in a single scan and hence would be useful for initial scanning. On comparison with spectroscopy studies performed by our group, it is found that combining both spectroscopy and imaging as a device may be effective for the early detection of oral lesions. The recent increase in high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV)- associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers has gained considerable importance due to their distinct clinical and molecular characteristics. However, the natural history of oral HPV from acquisition to persistence and malignant transformation is still unclear. The global prevalence of oral HPV infection in healthy individuals ranges from 0.67% to 35%, while 31%-38.5% in head and neck cancer (HNC). The persistence rate of oral HR-HPV infection is 5.5% -12.8% globally. India has the highest HNC burden due to apparent differences in predisposing factors compared with the West. The prevalence of oral HPV in healthy individuals and its contribution to HNC is less evident in Indian studies. HR-HPV-associated HNC in this region accounts for 26%, with an active infection in 8%-15% of these tumors. There is a lack of concordance in the expression of p16 as a surrogate marker for HPV detection in HNC because of differences in behavioral risk factors. Due to a lack of evidence, treatment de-escalation cannot be implemented despite the improved outcome of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers. This review critically analyzes the existing literature on the dynamics of oral HPV infection and HPV-associated HNC, identifying potential avenues for future research. A better understanding of the oncogenic role of HR-HPV in HNC will help to formulate novel therapeutic approaches and is expected to have a significant public health impact as preventive strategies can be implemented. Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer usually involves a total dose of 6000-7000 cGy, delivered daily in 6-7 weeks, and is known to cause several oral complications. These include oral mucositis, oral pain, insufficient saliva production, increased risk of dental caries, decreased mouth opening, and osteoradionecrosis. This is a cross-sectional study conducted among Saudi dental professionals using an online survey; 463 dentists from Riyadh City were utilized in this study. Findings reported that almost equal numbers of males (51.9%) and females (48.1%) participated in the study; the majority of them were working as general dentists in the government sector. A significantly significant proportion of them thought that oral assessment is a necessity before radiotherapy and that the ideal time for a complete oral evaluation is after the diagnosis of cancer. In the present study, we concluded that the majority of dentists thought that oral assessment is necessary before radiotherapy and that the ideal time is after the diagnosis. The evaluation must include extraction of teeth with poor prognosis, and radiotherapy after oral surgery should be started after 3-4 months. Introduction: Oral cancer (OC) is associated with various risk factors and high mortality rates, and contributes significantly to the worldwide cancer burden. Objectives: To assess and evaluate patients' current knowledge, awareness, and behavior regarding OC risk in a cancer trust hospital. Materials and Methods: The study involved 600 patients who attended cancer trust hospital, East Godavari district, from September 2021 to October 2021. A self-administered questionnaire of 20-questions was given to each patient that included socio-demographic and disease-specific information and their answers evaluated. Results: The data was examined using descriptive statistics, and the connection between the variables, education, family income, and other factors was assessed using a chi-square test (with a 5% significance threshold). The results were analysed with reference to their implications for interventions aimed at patient's awareness for oral cancer symptoms. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, people lacked information and awareness about identified risk factors for oral cancer. Knowledge of maintaining a healthy lifestyle that eliminates the consumption of established oral cancer risk factors was low. BACKGROUND: With the emergence of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, globally the use of tobacco has decreased notably, although, it still requires efforts at individual, organizational, community level to decrease the rate further. Dental professionals are at an excellent position to provide tobacco cessation counselling and interventions, however, it is not practiced much due to lack of training and lack of knowledge. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to assess the global status of knowledge, attitude and practice on tobacco cessation interventions among dental professionals. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A systematic search of 6 databases with no language restriction since 2000 was undertaken. Studies were included if they assessed knowledge, attitude and practice on tobacco cessation interventions among dental professionals using a validated or prevalidated tool. The data obtained for assessment of knowledge, attitude, practice, curriculum and barriers were represented through heatmaps. Quality assessment of the studies was done using Newcastle Ottawa scale. RESULTS: Fifty six studies were included in this systematic review. Majority of the studies were found to be of moderate quality. Knowledge regarding the tobacco cessation interventions was more theoretical than practical. All the studies showed a favorable attitude among dental professionals towards tobacco cessation intervention. CONCLUSION: The included studies lack homogeneity in assessing knowledge, attitude and practice on tobacco cessation interventions. The development and validation of a standardized questionnaire to assess knowledge, attitude and practice on tobacco cessation interventions could be a potentially effective way to uniformly gather data on the subject. Introduction: Fungal infections like oral candidiasis is prevalent in cancer patients as their immune systems were compromised. Material and Methods: 377 cancer patients who were clinically diagnosed with oropharyngeal candidiasis were included in the study. Isolation and identification of Candida species was based on standard microbiological procedures. CLSI (2021) recommendations were followed when determining antifungal susceptibility. Results: Among the total 377 cases included, the highest number of instances was reported in those aged 41 to 50 years (30.23%). Candida albicans (21.98%) was the most frequent followed by Candida tropicalis (18.84%), Candida prapsilosis (17.80%). Monomicrobial growth was observed in 77.63% patients whereas polymicrobial growth was observed in 22.36% patients. Candida albicans (24.59%) and Candida tropicalis (20.49%) were the most frequent isolates among patients who underwent chemotherapy while Candida albicans (40%) and Candida Parapsilosis (26.66%) were the most frequent isolates among patients undergoing radiotherapy. Miconazole was found to be more susceptible than Fluconazole, Itraconazole, Clotriconazole among the antifungals. Conclusion: Due to the risk of a systemic infection, it is important to recognise candidiasis as soon as possible for the clinical management of seriously unwell cancer patients. Objectives: Oral cancer screening can assist in the early detection of oral potentially malignant lesions (OPMLs) and prevention of oral cancers. It can be challenging for clinicians to differentiate OPMLs from benign conditions. Adjunct screening tools such as fluorescence visualisation (FV) and DNA image cytometry (DNA‐ICM) have shown success in identifying OPMLs in high‐risk clinics. For the first time we aimed to assess these technologies in Indian rural settings and evaluate if these tools helped clinicians identify high‐risk lesions during screening. Methods: Dental students and residents screened participants in five screening camps held in villages outside of Hyderabad, India, using extraoral, intraoral, and FV examinations. Lesion and normal tissue brushings were collected for DNA‐ICM analysis and cytology. Results: Of the 1116 participants screened, 184 lesions were observed in 152 participants. Based on white light examination (WLE), 45 lesions were recommended for biopsy. Thirty‐five were completed on site; 25 (71%) were diagnosed with low‐grade dysplasias (17 mild, 8 moderate) and the remaining 10 showed no signs of dysplasia. FV loss was noted in all but one dysplastic lesion and showed a sensitivity of 96% and specificity of 17%. Cytology combined with DNA‐ICM had a sensitivity of 64% and specificity of 86% in detecting dysplasia. Conclusion: DNA‐ICM combined with cytology identified the majority of dysplastic lesions and identified additional lesions, which were not considered high‐risk during WLE and biopsy on site. This study aimed to investigate the possible factors affecting dentists' behavior relating to performing oral cancer examinations as part of routine clinical examination. A total of 95 direct clinical observation sessions—utilizing an instrument consisting of 19 evidence-based observational criteria for oral cancer examinations—were observed by four calibrated dentists. Thirty-two final-year students, 32 interns, and 31 faculty members of Jazan Dental School were examined between April 9 and May 4, 2017. A descriptive analysis was conducted to investigate the frequencies/percentages of the performed observing criteria by all examiners. ANOVA and Tukey tests were carried out to investigate the difference between the examiner groups. A total number of 32 patients participated in the study, whereby each patient was examined by three different examiners from each group, as well as by the attending observer/s. Fewer than 50% of the examiners performed the clinical steps necessary for an oral cancer examination—for example, taking into account past medical history, as well as extra and intra-oral examinations. More than 90% of the examiners examined hard tissue, whereas fewer than 30% of them educated their patients about possible risk factors. A significant difference between examiner groups was found in favor of faculty members. A gap between knowledge and actual practice of oral cancer examinations was evident: majority of participants failed to perform the necessary steps for an oral cancer examination. Objectives: Evidence on the awareness and knowledge level of oral cancer and its associated risk factors among dental hygienists is scarce; this systematic review aimed to synthesize their available evidence of the level of knowledge, attitude and practice. Methods: PubMed and Scopus were searched for publications from any year up to January 2021. Studies about knowledge and/or attitudes and/or practices of dental hygienists have been taken into account. Overall, 14 studies have been selected for the systematic review. Results: Excluding tobacco use (99.8%–100%), considerable variability were found among dental hygienists about important oral cancer risk factors such as alcohol consumption (30.0%–90.0%), human papilloma virus (23.0%–90.0%), oldness (37.7%–69.3%), diet (30.0%–42.2%) and betel quid chewing (5.0% and 98.0%). There was a good level of awareness among dental hygienists regarding leukoplakia (86.5%), instead less than half recognized erythroplakia as a precancerous lesion. Moderate knowledge was recorded about frequent sites of oral cancer development. Most of dental hygienists reported to perform intraoral screening (85.2%–100%). To regard attitude, a great variability was found about adequacy of undergraduate training (15.7%–75.0%) and most of dental hygienists expressed the need for continuing education (92.7%–99.0%). Conclusions: Dental hygienists play a key role in oral cancer detection. Low knowledge of oral cancer among dental hygienists is strongly associated with the low levels of early detection. These findings provide useful information to improve continuing education programmes pre‐ and post‐graduation targeted at the prevention of oral cancer in order to reduce oral cancer morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis of oral cancer results in less aggressive treatment and improves the quality of life and overall 5-year survival rate. Well-trained dental professionals can play a crucial role in the early detection of oral cancers. The present study aims to determine the effectiveness of the training program "OralDETECT", a spaced repetitive, test-enhanced learning tool with a corrective feedback mechanism for early detection of oral cancer. Thirty-two dentists and 259 dental students from three Malaysian dental schools were involved in this study. All participants were trained and calibrated to recognize oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral cancer using "OralDETECT", which is comprised of a series of pre-test, lecture, post-tests and review sessions. The percentage of correct answers (scores) for each test given by the participants was calculated and analysed using a paired t test. It was found that the overall percentage of diagnostic accuracy for both dental professionals and student groups increased to above 80% from the pre-tests to the final post-tests. There was a significant improvement in overall scores between the pre-tests and all three post-tests for the dental professional groups and the student groups. The diagnostic accuracy for individual OPMD and lesions suspicious of oral cancer also increased to above 80% for both groups. The results of our study demonstrate that the "OralDETECT" is an efficient and effective competency tool which can be used to train dental professionals and students for the early detection of OPMD and oral cancer. This systematic review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of conventional oral examination (COE) versus incisional or excisional biopsy for the diagnosis of malignant and/or dysplastic lesions in patients with clinically evident lesions. Searches were conducted across five electronic databases from inception to January 2020. Meta‐analyses were undertaken, where appropriate. Among 18 included studies, 14 studies were included in the meta‐analysis, giving summary estimates for COE of 71% sensitivity and 85% specificity for the diagnosis of dysplastic and/or malignant lesions. The pooled diagnostic accuracy of identifying malignant‐only lesions was reported in seven studies, giving a pooled estimate of 88% sensitivity and 81% specificity. Diagnostic accuracy of different types of dental/medical professionals in identifying dysplastic or malignant lesions gave varying estimates of sensitivity and specificity across three studies. Further research is needed to improve the diagnostic accuracy of COE for early detection of dysplastic and malignant oral lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia are post-Soviet countries with a high rate of heavy smokers and a relatively high age-standardized incidence of oral cancer. However, to our knowledge, there is lack of available information on dentists' knowledge on prevention of oral cancer in the countries in question. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the knowledge, opinions, and practices related to oral cancer prevention and oral mucosal examination among dentists in Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia. Methods: This was a multi-country, cross-sectional study based on a self-administered questionnaire. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 3534 dentists (797 in Chisinau, Moldova, 1349 in Minsk, Belarus, and 1388 in Yerevan, Armenia). Dentists' knowledge about risk factors for oral cancer development and its clinical picture, current practices and opinions with regard to oral mucosal screening and oral cancer prevention, and their consistency to perform oral mucosal examination were assessed. A knowledge score ranging from 0 to 14 points was generated based on each dentist's answer to the questionnaire. Results: A total of 1316 dentists responded, achieving an overall response rate of 37.2% (34.5% in Moldova; 52.3% in Belarus; 24.2% in Armenia). Most dentists in the three countries correctly identified tobacco (83.8–98.2%) and prior oral cancer lesions (84.0–96.3%) as risk factors for oral cancer. Most dentists correctly identified leukoplakia as a lesion with malignant potential (68.7% in Moldova; 88.5% in Belarus; 69.9% in Armenia), while erythroplakia was identified by much fewer in all three countries. Less than 52% of dentists identified the tongue, rim of tongue, and floor of mouth as the most common sites for oral cancer. The mean knowledge score for all countries combined was 7.5 ± 2.7. The most commonly reported barriers to perform oral mucosal examination were lack of training, knowledge, and experience. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for improved oral cancer-related education and training on oral mucosal examination for dentists in Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia. The burden of oral cancer in Nigeria is largely under-reported. The available data on oral cancer etiology/risk factors, clinical features, disease burden, and literacy rate in Nigeria points towards a possible explosion in prevalence in the near future, which poses a serious public health concern. The general medical and dental practitioners (GMDPs) in Nigeria can salvage this looming problem through appropriate public health and clinical interventions. This narrative review article re-emphasizes the key roles of GMDPs towards oral cancer eradication in Nigeria. The present study is the first systematic review of papers that have performed a full economic evaluation on oral cancer screening strategies using visual oral examination. The review questions were (1) Is screening a cost‐effective strategy in oral cancer? (2) What is the most cost‐effective strategy among the different screening approaches in oral cancer? The main outcome measure was the incremental cost‐effectiveness ratio. The study identifies and reviews seven full economic evaluations. The included studies scored 75%–100% on the methodological appraisal. Majority of the studies reports that oral cancer screening is a cost‐effective strategy, especially in an opportunistic setting and high‐risk subset of patients. The results were sensitive to cost and effectiveness parameters. Oral cancer screening, though found cost‐effective, the uncertainty around these parameters necessitates additional studies that include better estimates in the modeling assessments. Background: Oral cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world over and is a major public health problem. There are numerous resources on the internet which provide information related to oral cancer. However, they may not be optimal and standardized. The present study was conducted to assess the quality, readability, and content of the online resources for oral cancer.Methods: The content analysis approach was employed for the present study. Google search engine was employed to search for various online resources on oral cancer. The first 50 websites were evaluated for their quality and readability. Flesch-Kincaid readability tests were used to assess the readability of the internet material and consisted of Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade level. The quality of websites was assessed by Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks and HONcode (Health Over Net code).Results: A total of 12 (32.43%) of the websites were fairly difficult to comprehend, while none of the websites were easy/very easy to comprehend. A total of 8 (21.62%) websites were readable by only college-level graduates. Overall, 21 (56.76%) of the websites did not have HONcode certification.Conclusion: The present study revealed that a majority of the websites were fairly difficult to comprehend and readable by college-level graduates. There is a definite need to monitor the quality of the websites on oral cancer. Oral cancer has a tendency to be detected always at a later stages which is very dangerous to the patients because of its higher mortality rates. Early detection of oral cancer is therefore very important to prevent its progression to later stages. General practitioners are well suited to providing head and neck examinations, and to screening for the presence of suspicious oral lesions. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent cancer of the head and neck with over 500,000 new cases every year worldwide. The stage of disease at diagnosis is associated with the 5-year survival rate. Unfortunately, approximately two-thirds of patients are diagnosed with advanced disease with local and regional or distant spread. Earlier detection of OSCC may be improved with the development of adjunctive techniques for clinical detection and diagnosis, which is expected to enhance the prognosis of the disease. This narrative review aims to provide an overview of adjuncts that are available for clinical use to assist in improving detection of potentially malignant epithelial lesions and early-stage OSCC. Oral cancer disease is among the most common cancers in the world and are associated with mortality and morbidity. The characterization of saliva samples may help to distinguish patients with oral cancer disease from normal subjects. To characterize spectra of saliva samples from normal subjects and oral cancer patients by use of fluorescence, absorption, and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Whole unstimulated saliva samples were collected from patients with oral cancer disease and normal subjects. The saliva samples were analyzed by absorption, fluorescence and 1H-NMR spectroscopic techniques. The characteristic spectra of saliva samples from patients with oral cancer disease and normal subjects were compared. For fluorescence spectroscopic studies, six fluorophores were found in saliva samples. Autofluorescence emission spectra and synchronous spectra of saliva were different between normal subjects and oral cancer patients. For absorption spectroscopic studies, the typical absorption spectra of saliva samples from normal subjects and oral cancer patients were also different in absorption intensity, 1st and 2nd derivative of absorption spectra values. For 1H-NMR studies, nine metabolites and four metabolites were found in saliva samples taken from normal subjects and oral cancer patients, respectively. The metabolic profiles of saliva samples from normal subjects and oral cancer patients were not similar. The characteristic spectra of saliva samples from normal subjects and oral cancer patients were found. These results showed differences in the spectra of saliva samples between both that groups. Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of recent diagnostic aids for oral cancer among dental students. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among 100 students using a 15-item self-administered questionnaire during COVID-19 pandemic period involving both undergraduates and postgraduate dental students.It was formatted on google forms and shared through social media. The data collected was analysed statistically. Results: A total of 100 dental studentsparticipated in the survey. The total knowledge, attitude, and practice about recent diagnostic aids for oral cancer (based on summing all the positive responses -- for all the relevant questions -- and calculating the percentage) was 90% for post-graduates (highest), 88% for interns group, 84% for final years and 80% for third years (least) respectively.The results of this study show that postgraduates had good knowledge about recent diagnostic aids for oral cancer when compared to other groups. Conclusion: These findings concerning dental students suggests that they have sufficient knowledge in the recent diagnostic methods of oral canceras they are the ones who have higher chances of diagnosing oral cancer at earlier stages as they routinely examine oral cavity. Introduction: The aim of this study is to assess awareness of oral cancer in a group of medical professionals working in Bergama district of Izmir province, Turkey. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 90 medical doctors and a questionnaire was submitted to the study group consisting of 25 questions related to risk factors and screening methods, attitude toward oral cancer, control of oral cancer care, and knowledge on oral cancer. Results: All participants regard the use of cigarettes and viral diseases as a risk factor and 95.6% of them consider the use of alcohol as a risk factor. 15.6% of all participants reported erythroplakia and Morbus Bowen as two lesions with the greatest cancerous tendency, while 47.8% of participants reported leukoplakia and erythroplakia. Among age groups, rates of assessment of alcohol usage as a risk factor (P = 0.002), rates of assessment of high age as a risk factor (P = 0.007), rates of distribution of the most prevalent oral cancer regions (P = 0.001), rates of distribution of the two lesion groups with the greatest sensitivity to cancer (P = 0021), and rates of assessment of prior alcohol use of the patient when taking medical history (P = 0.008) were statistically significant. Conclusion: The ability of medical professionals to recognize and diagnose oral cancer as early as possible concerning diagnostic and treatment progress is a very crucial point. This study suggests that medical doctors show a sensitive attitude toward oral cancers. However, it also reveals that there is a need for improvement of the undergraduate curriculum in oral cancer in medical schools and for the provision of postgraduate and continuing education on this topic. Objective: Color perception is an important variable in detecting and assessing oral conditions. The aim was to investigate clinicians' perception of toluidine blue (Tblue) staining compared to digital color analysis, which may impact mucosal lesion detection, affect the decision to biopsy, and biopsy site selection. Method and Materials: Four oral lesions were stained with Tblue. Digital color analyses of eight areas on each image were completed and were considered as "gold standard" (GS). Twenty specialists ranked these areas according to their perceived intensity of blue stain in two sessions. Results: Consistency between GS and observers rankings was 0.8791. However, more than half of the observers inaccurately perceived the intermediate blue tones. Overall interobserver agreement was 0.8714; stability between two sessions decreased to 45% for intermediate tones. Conclusion: Assessing the equivocal blueness of an oral mucosal lesion in clinical settings may vary due to variation in visual perception. OBJECTIVE Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in the human body and is a global health concern. This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitudes regarding oral cancer of dentists working in Turkey. METHODS Across-sectional study was carried out in 2019 in Ankara, Turkey. A questionnaire was designed that consisted of dentists' demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices about oral cancer. The questionnaire was distributed to the dentists working at the public oral and dental health care centres in Ankara, Turkey. In the present study, 350 dentists participated. RESULTS Valid questionnaires were attained from 294 dentists. The findings showed that most of the participants were aware of the main risk factors most commonly linked to oral cancer. Only half or fewer of the participants knew the most prevalent type of oral cancer (55.8%) or the most prevalent oral pre-malignant lesion (44.2%). It was found that 70.7% of dentists examined oral mucosa and 47.3% examined head and neck lymph nodes. 66.7% of dentists encountered oral malignant/premalignant lesions in the past and only 10% had training in oral cancers in the past five years. CONCLUSION This study highlights a deficit in knowledge among dentists and the need for training activities concerning the early diagnosis of oral cancer in Turkey. Background: Oral cancer is a public health concern and is widespread in developing countries, particularly in South Asia. However, oral cancer cases are also rising in developed nations due to various factors, including smoking, viruses and increased migration from South Asia. In this context, the role of general medical practitioners (GPs) in identifying oral cancer is becoming increasingly important and, while some studies have explored their perspective about oral cancer, a synthesis of these results has not been undertaken.Objective: The objective of this integrative review is to synthesize existing evidence regarding oral cancer-related knowledge, attitudes and practices of GPs in developed countries.Methods: Four electronic databases were searched to identify studies focussing on the objective of this review. The inclusion criteria were: peer-reviewed English language publications; studies conducted in developed countries involving GPs; explored at least one study outcome (knowledge/attitudes/practices). No restrictions were placed on the publication date.Results: A total of 21 studies involving 3409 GPs were reviewed. Most studies revealed limited knowledge of GPs about emerging risk factors, such as betel nut chewing (0.8-50%). Significant variation (7-70%) was evident in routine oral examination practices of GPs. Most GPs felt unsure about diagnosing oral cancer and many (38-94%) raised the need for further education. No study explored the specific relevance of GPs' practices concerning South Asian immigrants.Conclusion: This review suggests the need for educational programs to enhance GPs' knowledge regarding oral cancer. Background and Aim: Oral cancer is one of the most life-threatening conditions, early diagnosis of which greatly increases the probability of cure and survival rates. Knowledge regarding risk factors and early signs among the nonhealth professionals which help in early detection prevention and of the disease. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the awareness about tobacco use among nonhealth professional students in Bangalore city. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire study was conducted to assess the knowledge and awareness about oral cancer among 800 nonhealth professional students in Bengaluru city. A self-administered questionnaire containing 26 questions pertaining to awareness, signs, symptoms and risk factors of tobacco use was administered to the students. Results: The results revealed that the majority of the students (55.5%) were aware about oral cancer but have less knowledge in terms of its signs and symptoms of oral cancer. The main source for information pertaining to oral cancer was obtained from mass media, i.e., TV, radio and social media (21.5%). Early detection of Oral cancer is crucial in improving survival rate.To improve early detection, observation under a chemiluminescent light (ViziLite,Zila pharmaceuticals,Phoenix AZ) has been recommended, which is one of the newly developed adjuncts where it was still in its infancy. The present survey assessed the Knowledge of ViziLite among Dental Students. The Aim of the survey was to investigate general knowledge and applications of ViziLite among Dental students. Cross sectional survey using questionnaires of 12 questions which were adopted and modified from previous studies and designed in simpler questionnaire form and conducted among the undergraduate & postgraduate students of totally 100 in Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals. The results were collected and then analysed throundergraduateh SPSS software. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out and chi square test was used and p value was calculated. Among the total respondents 82% of them are aware of ViziLite - An aid in diagnosis of early detection of Oral cancer. The reports from the survey concluded that ViziLite knowledge and applications shows that there is a significant difference between the post graduate and undergraduate students and identified that the postgraduate students are more aware of the utility and light reflection principle of ViziLite than the undergraduate students(p-value <0.05). Also found that there is no significant difference between the postgraduate and undergraduate students on awareness of ViziLite’s interpretation and both accept that ViziLite is one of the diagnostic tools for oral cancer detection(p- value >0.05).Hereby we conclude, a significant level of awareness was present among undergraduate students and postgraduate students and the postgraduate students are more aware than the undergraduate students. Aim:To determine theself-reported knowledge and experiences regarding oral cancer detection among dental interns relatingto the etiology, risk factors and signs of oral cancer. Materials &Method:A cross-sectional survey was carried out using a questionnaire developed by Carter and Ogden which was modified, among 97 dental interns of a private dental college. The questionnaire was designed to collect information on demography; knowledge of interns in etiology, signs, and symptoms and undergraduate experience in examination and biopsy procedure and management of malignant and premalignant lesions.Descriptive analysis was carried out.Comparison of mean scores between gender using Unpaired t test. Differences were considered significant when p<0.05. Results:The response rate was 97.9%. About 70.6% of the interns examine the oral mucosa routinely during clinical examination. Majority of them (83.7% )were aware of the red and white lesions affecting the oral mucosa and 81.5% have encountered oral cancer patients in their clinics. None of them felt that they have sufficient knowledge regarding detection and prevention of oral cancer and a vast majority (92.4%) were strongly positive and wanted more teaching and information on oral cancer in the form of information packs (32.6%), lectures (21.7%), seminars (25%) and interactive sessions (20.7%). Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in oral human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence among adults based on HPV vaccination status and periodontitis status.Methods: Data from 2011 to 2012 and 2013 to2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (n = 822) were retrieved in order to predict the prevalence of oral HPV in 24 separate demographic groups (age by sex by race) based on the following characteristics: HPV vaccination status and periodontitis status. A multiple logistic regression model, controlling for gender, age, race, smoking behavior, alcohol consumption, and sexual partners, was calculated in order to generate prevalence estimates.Results: Median predicted oral HPV prevalence rates per 1,000 in 2011-2012 were highest among nonvaccinated individuals with periodontitis [median ( x˜ ) = 31.62, interquartile range (IQR) = 102.97], followed by nonvaccinated individuals without periodontitis ( x˜ = 24.63, IQR = 81.84), vaccinated individuals with periodontitis ( x˜ = 18.40, IQR = 62.27), and vaccinated individuals without periodontitis ( x˜ = 14.29, IQR = 48.96). Median predicted oral HPV prevalence rates per 1,000 in 2013-2014 were highest among nonvaccinated individuals with periodontitis ( x˜ = 9.50, IQR = 33.02), followed by nonvaccinated individuals without periodontitis ( x˜ = 7.37, IQR = 25.76), vaccinated individuals with periodontitis ( x˜ = 5.48, IQR = 19.27), and vaccinated individuals without periodontitis ( x˜ = 4.25, IQR = 14.98).Conclusions: Interventions that integrate primary care and dental care are needed, given increased risk for oral HPV among unvaccinated individuals with periodontitis. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the levels of knowledge and awareness of dental patients in South-Eastern Anatolian on oral cancer. Material and Methods: This study conducted with 389 (209 females and 180 males) participants. Sociodemographic information such as age, gender, education level, living place, smoking and alcohol use were obtained from dental patients. A questionnaire including early signs and risk factors related to the disease to assess the knowledge and awareness about oral cancer was performed. Obtained data were statistically analyzed with descriptive analyses, independent t sample test and ANOVA. Results: Only 23.1% of participants had heard of oral cancer. Smoking (95.5%), alcohol (68.7%) and tobacco use (67.9%) were the most often identified risk factors of oral cancer, whereas heavy sun exposure (12.1%) was the least defined factor. There was a statistically significant difference between education level and living place for awareness of oral cancer (p < 0.05), while no significant difference was found between gender, age and oral cancer (p > 0.05). As the source of the information for oral cancer, the television and internet were the first while the medical doctors were the last. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that knowledge and awareness about the oral cancer were insufficient in South-Eastern Anatolian. There is a substantial need to raise awareness of oral cancer, its risk factors, and early signs of the disease. Visual media, billboards and information leaflets may be useful for this issue. Oral cancer is a significant health problem, Mouth cancer is preventable by avoiding risk factors. Due to lack of awareness of oral cancer in the public about and its risk factors it causes more death. The aim of present study was to determine the level of awareness of oral cancer in Thiruvaiyaru. The cross sectional was done on college students in Thiruvaiyaru. Students from different colleges were involved in this study. Students participated in the study are by random sampling method. Students who are willing are only participated in this study. Students who are not willing to participate in this study are excluded. Data was collected by well structured questions questionnaire which included questions relating to sociodemographic such as age, gender, awareness of oral cancer. Out of 100 students questioned males are 47% and females are 53%. In response to the type of cancer most commonly heard of, 40% of college students were familiar with lung cancer, 8% skin cancer and 29% blood cancer while only 23%knew the word oral cancer but 84% students Heard about oral cancer. When asked about risk factors for oral cancer 69% answered tobacco and 24% students answered smoking and 4% answered poor oral hygiene. When asked about the site of oral cancer 29% answered floor of mouth and 35% answered mucous membrane and 18% answered under the tongue. when asked about symptoms most of them don't know the symptoms. When students were asked about dental visit 95% visit only when there is trouble. 44% of students answered that they don't know the curability of cancer. This study included 14% of smokers, 24% of students who consumed alcohol, and 8% of pan-chewers so this shows that the educated population of this region is unaware of basic knowledge about oral cancer especially about its site and symptoms. Objectives: Cancer of the oral cavity, a well-known global health concern, remains one of most common causes of cancer mortality. Continuity of care (COC), a measurement of the extent to which an individual patient receives care from a given provider over a specified period of time, can help cancer survivors process their experiences of dealing with the illness and recuperation; however, limited research has focused on the survival rate of working-age patients with oral cancer. Methods: A total of 14,240 working-age patients (20 0.38) and non-high COC (COCI ≤ 0.38) groups. After propensity-score matching, the mortality risk in the low and intermediate COC groups was also found to be significantly higher than that in the high COC group (aHR = 1.178, 95% CI = 1.074–1.292, p < 0.001 and aHR = 1.189, 95% CI = 1.107–1.277, p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: In Taiwan, COC and prior dental treatment before RT significantly affected the survival rate of working-age patients with oral cancer. This result merits policymakers' attention. Introduction: Early detection and successful management of oral cancer (OC) is highly dependent on the early detection of this malignancy, which is related to individuals' awareness and knowledge about this fatal condition. Objectives: This pilot study was designed to estimate awareness degree of Iraqi patients about OC. Material and methods: A total of 1,024 questionnaires were mailed to six randomly selected governmental specialized dental centers in the city of Baghdad. The questionnaire consisted of basic information section including age, gender, alcohol drinking, smoking, and frequency of dental visits. The other section comprised seven questions to estimate the degree of OC awareness. Results: A total of 318 participants (60% females, 40% males) responded to the questionnaire. The mean response of the sample was 0.36 ± 0.201, and the majority of participants answered only 2-3 questions correctly and no one responded to all seven questions correctly. The association of awareness to different factors showed that the only significant finding was related to information given by a dentist to the patient (OR: 2.9; 95% CI) about OC. Conclusions: In general, the degree of awareness of Iraqi patients was low about OC. The knowledge about OC considerably increased when the subjects received information from their dentists. Objective: Recent advances in techniques for detecting oral premalignant lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma have improved the chances of early diagnosis. Adjuncts for detection of lesions include toluidine blue staining and cytologic examination. The primary objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of 1% toluidine blue (modified Mashberg technique) and cytology in detection of oral premalignant lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Method and Materials: The study included 86 participants suspected of having oral premalignant lesions or oral squamous cell carcinoma. One percent toluidine blue was applied to the lesions, followed by cytology. A biopsy was then performed on the tissue. Histopathologically proven oral premalignant lesions/oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions were analyzed for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of both screening techniques. The association of screening techniques and histopathologic diagnosis among the oral premalignant lesions, oral squamous cell carcinoma and benign groups were analyzed using the Fisher exact test. P<.05 was considered significant. Results: The specificity and sensitivity for oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral premalignant lesions detection of 1% toluidine blue was 81.35% and 66.67%, respectively, while cytology attained 77.97% and 70.37%, respectively. Negative predictive value and positive predictive value were 84.21% and 62.06% for 1% toluidine blue and 85.18% and 59.37% for cytologic examination, respectively. Comparison of 1% toluidine blue and cytology with histopathologic diagnosis shows a significant difference between carcinoma/epithelial dysplasia and no dysplasia and carcinoma/epithelial dysplasia and benign lesions (all, P< .05). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that 1% toluidine blue and cytology have high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in detecting oral premalignant lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma and can be used as an adjunct for early detection of such lesions. Oral cancer; the sixth most common malignancy in the world has one of the lowest 5 year survival rates. This can be attributed mainly to the delay in diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of vital staining with toluidine blue dye as an adjunct to standard clinical examination to facilitate early detection of malignant lesions of oral cavity and oropharynx. A hospital based diagnostic test accuracy study was carried out on 55 subjects with oral mucosal disorders that included clinically suspicious premalignant or malignant lesions, in the Department of ENT, Academy of Medical Sciences, Pariyaram, Kannur, Kerala over a period of 2 years. All lesions were subjected to detailed clinical examination and toluidine blue staining; and dye retention was recorded with photographs. The results of staining were compared with findings on histopathological examination. The Sensitivity and specificity of toluidine blue test for the detection of malignancy was 92.6 and 67.9% respectively; and the overall diagnostic accuracy was 80%. The result was highly significant with a 'p value' <0.001. The results indicate that toluidine blue staining is a simple, non-invasive technique which can be a valuable adjunct in the diagnostic process of oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of mouth self-examination (MSE) as a self-screening tool for detection of oral mucosal lesions among an Indigenous population in Malaysia at high risk for oral premalignant and malignant disorders.Methods: Two villages were selected as the sampling frame based on prevalence of tobacco and betel quid chewing habit. Respondents were asked to check their mouth for presence of lesion or abnormalities. Education on oral cancer, including MSE, was provided. Subsequently, respondents were asked to perform MSE. Finally, a clinical oral examination (COE) was done by a specialist and the presence of oral mucosal lesions was recorded.Results: Almost 64.5 percent of respondents exhibited high levels of difficulty and low mucosal visualization and retracting ability, whereas 3.0 percent demonstrated high attention level when performing MSE. Prevalence of oral mucosal lesions was 59.0 percent, whereas the prevalence of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) was 9.0 percent. Detection of oral lesions by respondents using MSE was lower than detection by the gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity of MSE for detection of all types of lesions were 8.6 and 95.0 percent respectively. When analyzing each lesion type separately, MSE was found to be most sensitive in detection of swellings (10.0 percent), and most specific in identifying white lesions (97.8 percent). For detection of OPMDs, although specificity was high (98.9 percent), sensitivity (0 percent), and +LR (0) was poor.Conclusion: MSE is not an effective self-screening tool for early detection of potentially malignant lesions for this population. Objectives: Most patients with oral cancer lack early symptoms, therefore most present with advanced stage of disease. Early detection of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) in the asymptomatic phase via an opportunistic oral cancer screening examination is important as survival rates are significantly improved if the disease is treated at an earlier stage. The objective is to identify opportunities to achieve early stage diagnosis of oral cancer in Australian patients.Materials and Methods: A cohort of 103 patients newly diagnosed with oral cancer were surveyed at a tertiary hospital Head and Neck Clinic. Patient awareness, knowledge, risk factors and diagnostic delay in oral cancer diagnosis were investigated. The asymptomatic period before diagnosis was studied to identify opportunities for improving opportunistic screening rates in Australia.Results: Australian patients have poor awareness of oral cancer with 46% having never heard of oral cancer, and poor knowledge of risk factors for oral cancer. Only 7% were diagnosed in the asymptomatic phase and all by dental practitioners. Once symptomatic, median diagnostic delay was 9 weeks. In the asymptomatic phase before diagnosis, patients attended general medical practitioners far more often than general dental practitioners. Both groups rarely discussed risk factors for oral cancer (<10%) or performed opportunistic oral cancer screening examinations (<10%) with their patients.Conclusion: Asymptomatic diagnosis of oral cancer at an earlier stage of disease is possible in the primary medical setting but increased awareness and knowledge are required in both patients and health practitioners. Objectives: The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of precancerous lesions among an adult population in Kerala, India.Materials and Methods: A dental screening camp was organized in each district at two locations for two consecutive days to draw maximum participation of the community. All adult subject's attending the camp were initially screened for precancerous lesions using conventional light. An initial oral screening was done by two public health dentists and suspected cases were subjected to Identafi Oral cancer screening device and followed by histopathological evaluation.Results: The prevalence of oral precancerous lesions in the adult population of Kerala was 4.4%. Most of the lesions were associated with the use of tobacco followed by alcohol and spicy foods.Conclusion: The oral cancer detection device is an aid in detection of oral precancerous lesions. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge, practice, confidence, and perceived barriers to oral cancer screening among teaching faculty in Japan. Results were compared by specialist as well as years of clinical experience. A 25-question survey was used to assess the oral cancer screening practices of faculty dentists at Iwate Medical University, School of Dental Medicine, the only dental school located in the northeast (Tohoku) region of Japan. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Iwate Medical University. The response rate was 83% (n = 110, 71.8% were male). This survey revealed that only 43.6% of the dentists performed oral cancer screening frequently (always or usually) at the initial appointment, and there was no significant differences between specialists and clinical experience. Visual inspection of the oral cavity was the primary screening method, but the frequency and content of the examination (TMJ and tonsil) was significantly different between specialties. A history of cancer and tobacco use motivated providers to perform an examination and was significantly different between various specialists and clinically experienced providers. In contrast, HPV and alcohol consumption were a weak motivator. The confidence level of providers on their examination knowledge/skills was poor, especially among junior faculty. Objectives: To assess the quality of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on screening and diagnosis of oral cancer and to describe the characteristics of their recommendations. Materials and methods: We systematically searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, CPG' websites, and dentistry and oncology scientific societies to identify CPGs that were related to screening and diagnosis of oral cancer. The quality of selected CPGs was independently assessed by four appraisers using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) instrument. The inter-appraiser agreement was assessed. We performed a descriptive analysis of the recommendations included in the selected CPGs. Results: Eight CPGs were selected. The overall agreement among reviewers was considered very good (ICC: 0.823; 95% CI: 0.777–0.861). The median scores of the six AGREE II domains were as follows: "scope and purpose" 97.9% (IQR: 96.2–100.0%); "stakeholder involvement" 86.1% (IQR: 69.8–93.1%); "rigor of development" 75.3% (IQR: 64.2–94.3%); "clarity of presentation" 91.7% (IQR: 82.6–94.4%); "applicability" 53.1% (IQR: 19.3–74.2%); and "editorial independence" 83.3% (IQR: 67.2–93.8%). Four CPGs were assessed as "recommended", four "recommended with modifications", and none "not recommended". Twenty-three recommendations were provided, mostly with a low or very low level of evidence. Conclusion: The methodological quality of CPGs on screening and diagnosis of oral cancer is moderate. The "applicability" domain scored the lowest. Most recommendations were based on a low o very low level of evidence. Objective: Toluidine blue staining (TBS) is used for screening of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral cancer. Nevertheless, the judgment of TBS is based on the observer's personal experience and largely considered subjective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter- and intra-observer agreement on the judgment of TBS for screening of OPMDs and oral cancer.Materials and methods: Two hundred randomly ordered TBS images of OPMDs and oral cancer were judged twice independently by four clinicians and four graduated students majored in oral medicine, with an interval of 3 months. Inter- and intra-observer agreement was evaluated by the Cohen's kappa (κ) coefficient. The correlation between κ-value and individual experience was assessed by Spearman's correlation coefficient.Results: For the two sets of observation, good overall inter-observer agreement was found in the study (κ = 0.620 and 0.667). Sub-group analysis yielded good inter-observer agreement both for clinicians (κ = 0.613 and 0.611) and students (κ = 0.610 and 0.665). Pairwise inter-observer agreement was presented to be moderate to excellent between clinician and clinician (κ = 0.41~0.87, 0.43~0.81), moderate to excellent between student and student (κ = 0.43~0.71, 0.53~0.82), and poor to excellent between clinician and student (κ = 0.25~0.81, 0.35~0.87). Good to excellent intra-observer agreement (κ = 0.69~0.85) was presented for eight observers. However, no correlation was illustrated between years of experience and inter- or intra-observer agreement.Conclusion: Judgment of TBS has a good overall inter-observer agreement and good to excellent intra-observer agreement, which guarantees its utilization and popularity in detecting OPMDs and oral cancer.Clinical relevance: To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the inter- and intra-observer agreement of TBS judgment. The present results revealed a good inter-observer agreement and good to excellent intra-observer agreement, which provide a beneficial supplement to the knowledge of TBS technique. Introduction: The fissured epulis is a reactive tissue growth that develops underneath a dental prosthesis. Its etiology is related to removable of partial or total dentures and other irritative or traumatic factors. Oral cancer (CAB) is a malignant neoplasm of aggressive behavior, and it has become one of the most serious health problems worldwide. Currently, squamous cell carcinoma is considered a disease with a high mortality rate. This article aims to describe the clinical management of a squamous cell carcinoma, as a result of a fissured epulis in upper total edentulous patient. Case Report: A female patient, 58 years of age, with no systemic or family history, went for a lower removable prosthesis. The clinical examination in the maxilla presented an enlargement of soft tissue in the bottom of the vestibule on the left side, asymptomatic, compatible with a fissured epulis. Two surgical procedures were performed to remove the pathology and a sample was taken to perform a biopsy, which resulted in a squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was referred to a center specialized in cancer treatments (Society for the Fight Against Cancer) where she currently is receiving the attention of the case. Conclusions: The lack of knowledge of this injury on the part of the patient, and the lack of symptomatology, absence of periodic controls, maladjustment, and incorrect prosthetic design were the risk factors that triggered the injury. Aims: The aim of the study is to appraise the awareness levels among dentists of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) regarding oral cancer. Materials and Methods: A survey based on questionnaire was done to evaluate the acquaintance levels regarding oral cancer among the dentists working in the governmental and private dental clinic, Riyadh city, KSA. Results: Majority of the patients were male (57.9%, n = 117), most were working in private clinics (57.4%, n = 116), graduated within 15 years (2003-2018) (89.1%, n = 180), and general practitioners (78.7%, n = 159). The variation between knowledge and age, gender, year of graduation, and specialty (P > 0.05) among dentists was insignificant. Conclusion: For early detection of oral cancers, dentists have a vital role as they are the persons who see and observe oral cavity during routine dental checkups and can help identify suspicious lesions before having any symptoms.
