Light conversion into dc current is of paramount interest for a wide range of upcoming energy applications. Here we integrated dipole antennas with field-effect transistors based on a two-dimensional electron gas, with the specific aim of rectifying free-space radiation exploiting both artificial and natural nonlinearities. In the present work, resonant conditions of antenna-coupled field-effect rectifiers have been identified in a terahertz experiment based on the well-established GaAs transistor technology. Rectification of free-space radiation has been observed in a broad 0.15–0.40 THz range by implementing quasi-optical coupling with a substrate lens to an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure transistor into the gap of a cross-dipole antenna. The short- and the open-circuit resonances have been clearly identified through a comparison between experimental photocurrent spectra, electromagnetic simulations, and antenna models. A prototypical hybrid system formed by strong coupled gold hole arrays and J-aggregate molecules is investigated by using both steady-state spectroscopic method and ultrafast pump-probe approach. In particular, the plasmonic response of the device has been tuned by modifying its periodicity thus to achieve the strongest possible coupling regime. It is found that in the transient absorption spectra, under upper band excitation, the bleaching signal from uncoupled J-aggregate molecules completely disappears. Instead, two distinctive period dependent bleaching bands are formed, clearly fingerprint of the hybrid exciton-plasmon state. The dynamics of these bands is also directly analyzed. A remarkable long lifetime is found especially for the upper band, corresponding to the presence of a trap state in its transient absorption spectra under resonance excitation. Such unique feature should provide a new approach to control quantum-mechanical states under coherent coupling.

The excitation of plasmonic Fano resonances leads to a dual advantage in nano-photonics, in terms of local field enhancement and far-field spectral selectivity. Nevertheless, a remarkable challenge related to the hybridization between bright and dark plasmonic modes, i.e. between the two elements cooperating to the Fano resonance generation, consists in the sub-wavelength activation of dark modes via near-field channel. In this regard, strongly coupled plasmonic nano-assemblies are ideal systems providing a highly efficient way towards their excitation. Here, we analyze two trimer nano-architectures supporting respectively electric and magnetic Fano resonances. The different approaches employed for describing the two systems highlighted the role that the near-field coupling and the LSPs de-phasing separately play in the Fano hybridization phenomena.

Spintronics and spin-based technology rely on the ultra-fast unbalance of the electronic spin population in quite localized spatial regions. However, as a matter of fact, the low susceptibility of conventional materials at high frequencies strongly limits these phenomena, rendering the efficiency of magnetically active devices insufficient for application purposes. Among the possible strategies which can be envisaged, plasmonics offers a direct approach to increase the effect of local electronic unbalancing processes. By confining and enhancing free radiation in nm-size spatial regions, plasmonic nano-assemblies have demonstrated to support very intense electric and magnetic hot-spots. In particular, very recent studies have proven the fine control of magnetic fields in Fano resonance condition. The near-field-induced out-of-phase oscillation of localized surface plasmons has manifested itself with the arising of magnetic sub-diffractive hot-spots. Here, we show how this effect can be further boosted in the mid-infrared regime via the introduction of higher order plasmonic modes. The investigated system, namely Moon Trimer Resonator (MTR), combines the high efficiency of a strongly coupled nano-assembly in Fano interferential condition with the elevated tunability of the quadrupolar resonance supported by a moon-like geometry. The fine control of the apical gap in this unique nanostructure, characterizes a plasmonic device able to tune its resonance without any consequence on the magnetic hot-spot size, thus enabling an efficient squeezing in the infrared.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) polycrystalline thin films of different thicknesses (ranging from 370 nm to 750 nm) were fabricated on corning glass substrates using Close Spaced Sublimation (CSS) technique. Optical and electrical investigation revealed that CdS thin films show an appreciable transparency (50–70% transmission) in visible range and a highly resistive behavior (106 Ω cm). Samples were doped by silver (Ag) at different concentrations, using ion exchange technique, in order to reduce the resistivity of CdS thin films and to improve their efficiency as a window layer for solar cell application. The doping of Ag in pure CdS thin films resulted into an increase of surface roughness and a decrease both in electrical resistivity and in transparency. By optimizing annealing parameters, we were able to properly control the optical properties of the present system. In fact, the Ag doping of pure CdS films has led to a decrease of the sample resistivity by three orders of magnitude (103 Ω cm) against a 20% cut in optical transmission.

The excitation of plasmonic dark modes via a radiative channel is a phenomenon strongly hindered in the subwavelength regime. Recently, for achieving this purpose it has been proposed to exploit near-field interactions between radiating (bright) modes and lossless dark modes. However, this approach unveils challenging difficulties related to the excitation of dark modes through the near-field coupling with a bright mode. Here, it is experimentally and numerically shown how symmetry breaking applied to a nanoantenna dimer can conversely induce the excitation of plasmonic resonances, which play a key role for the dark modes’ activation in more complex nanoassemblies. On the basis of this study, a T-shaped nanoantenna trimer has been introduced as an elemental unit for the energy transfer between bright and dark modes in plasmonic nanostructures. Finally, we implemented an analytical perturbative model to further investigate the plasmonic hybridization of subwavelength systems.

With the objective to conceive a plasmonic solar cell with enhanced photocurrent, we investigate the role of plasmonic nanoshells, embedded within a ultrathin microcrystalline silicon solar cell, in enhancing broadband light trapping capability of the cell and, at the same time, to reduce the parasitic loss. The thickness of the considered microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si) layer is only ~1/6 of conventional μc-Si based solar cells while the plasmonic nanoshells are formed by a combination of silica and gold, respectively core and shell. We analyze the cell optical response by varying both the geometrical and optical parameters of the overall device. In particular, the nanoshells core radius and metal thickness, the periodicity, the incident angle of the solar radiation and its wavelength are varied in the widest meaningful ranges. We further explain the reason for the absorption enhancement by calculating the electric field distribution associated to resonances of the device. We argue that both Fabry-Pérot-like and localized plasmon modes play an important role in this regard.

Various nanoplasmonic devices were fabricated using top-down method such as electron beam lithography, electroplating and focused ion beam techniques. These substrates were investigated after depositing the molecules from dye to protein, using chemisorptions techniques. Theoretical simulations were also performed on these model nanostructures in order to understand the electrical field distribution. Furthermore, the future prospects of these nanostructures were also mentioned in this report. We present the responsivity spectra in the 0.2–0.4 THz range at low temperature of a AlGaAs/GaAs field-effect transistor connected to an on-chip integrated antenna. We fabricated asymmetric plasmonic microcavities to obtain down-converted signals from the intrinsic nonlinearity of 2D electron plasma oscillations. Finite-element modeling simulations of the 2D electron oscillations and electromagnetic calculation of the antenna spectral response suggest that the device may work as ultra-broadband nonlinear terahertz detector.

The sub-wavelength concentration and propagation of electromagnetic energy are two complementary aspects of plasmonics that are not necessarily co-present in a single nanosystem. Here we exploit the strong nanofocusing properties of stacked optical antennas in order to highly concentrate the electromagnetic energy into a 5 nm metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavity and convert free radiation into guided modes. The proposed nano-architecture combines the concentration properties of optical nanoantennas with the propagation capability of MIM systems, paving the way to highly miniaturized on-chip plasmonic waveguiding.

Matrices of nanodisk trimers are introduced as plasmonic platforms for the generation of localized magnetic hot-spots. In Fano resonance condition, the optical magnetic fields can be squeezed in sub-wavelength regions, opening promising scenarios for spintronics.

In the last decade, several efforts have been spent in the study of near-field coupled systems, in order to induce hybridization of plasmonic modes. Within this context, particular attention has been recently paid on the possibility to couple conventional bright and dark modes. As a result of such phenomenon, a Fano resonance appears as a characteristic sharp dip in the scattering spectra. Here we show how, gradually coupling a single rod-like nanostructure to an aligned nanoantenna dimer, it is possible to induce the near-field activation of an anti-bonding dark mode. The high polarization sensitivity presented by the far-field response of T-shape trimer, combined with the sharp Fano resonance sustained by this plasmonic device, opens interesting perspectives towards a new era of photonic devices.

In this work the design, fabrication and optical characterization of a polarization-sensitive L-shape nanoantenna device are reported. Such configuration supports plasmon-polariton modes that are combinations of in-phase and out-of-phase single antenna long-axis surface plasma oscillations. In the former case charges distributions induce in the gap region an intense hot spot while in the latter one a "zero-field spot"occurs in a plasmonic mode which can be referred to a non-zero dipolar momentum.

We investigate the resonance characteristics of terahertz nanoantenna arrays, both numerically and experimentally. We demonstrate their tunability and their significant field enhancement properties, which can find several applications in terahertz spectroscopy and nonlinear optics.
