International audience; A 3-in-1 depolarizing circular scatterer for the polarimetric radar calibration is proposed in this paper. The proposed scatterer is low cost, compact, planar circuit, and well suited for the radar operating in a compact range, for example, chipless RFID technology. By the virtue of its circular shape, the rear side of the proposed scatterer acts as a metallic disk with strong co polarization backscattered signals. The front side is composed of eight resonant dipoles which make it nondepolarizing and depolarizing scatterers at the inclination of 0° and 45°, respectively. The features of proposed circular scatterer are tested as reference calibration objects for single antenna based polarimetric radar calibration techniques. Two test objects are utilized: a dihedral tilted at 45° and a depolarizing multi resonant planar structure commonly called chipless RFID tag. The performance of proposed circular scatterer is also compared with the standard reference calibration objects: a metallic disk and a dihedral tilted at 22.5°. The performance of proposed circular scatterer is comparable to the standard reference calibration objects for the calibration techniques (namely Type 1 and Type 2). The proposed scatterer is potentially tolerant of displacement up to 1 cm and misalignment equals 2°.

There has been a surge of emphasis on polarimetric imaging modalities recently, in which Mueller matrix polarimetry (MMP) is at the heart of our understanding of polarization properties of an imaged sample. However, the historiography of MMP, predominantly undertaken in optics, largely lost sight of the potential of terahertz radiation on interactions with the imaged samples, especially biological ones. In addition, studies of MMP are generally concerned with intensity-only measurements requiring at least 16 polarization combinations, which dramatically add to the time cost in the process of measurements. The proposed study sets out to examine the complete 4 × 4 MMP from 0.2 to 1 THz using only orthogonal polarizations for two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-D imaging on leaf. A modified THz time domain spectrometer with self-designed linear polarizers is utilized for measurements and data acquisition. The Mueller matrix polar decomposition and Mueller matrix transform are employed to facilitate extraction of polarization characteristics of the imaged leaf. The time-of-flight technique is adopted to assist in the 3-D reconstruction of the leaf. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the novel measurement synthesis approach and the modified system for accurate characterization of the sample. Meanwhile, the findings indicate that MMP is superior in feature extraction as well as contrast enhancement of the sample. The insights gained from this article may be of assistance to the characterization of biological samples with MMP at higher frequencies for future research.

The radiometer on the NASA Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) mission is a fully polarimetric instrument that operates at L-band in the spectrum window at 1400–1427 MHz protected for passive use only. A unique feature of the radiometer is the fully digital back-end which permits direct computation of the third and fourth Stokes parameters: the real and imaginary part of the correlation of signal at horizontal and vertical polarizations, respectively. In particular, the SMAP conical scanning geometry provides the opportunity to look at the global distribution of the fourth Stokes parameter, TA4, at constant incidence angle (40°). A striking feature of TA4 is the existence of a strong (±10 K) spurious signal at coastlines. This article provides examples of the spikes and an explanation of the cause. Simulations have shown that the spurious signal is associated with antenna imperfections, such as cross polarization coupling and phase mismatch between polarizations.

The development of a new generation of soft gamma-ray telescopes should allow polarimetric measurements of astrophysical sources to be associated with the results from spectroscopy and imaging due to the promising developments in polarimetry achieved over the last decade. In this perspective, the advanced surveyor of transient events and nuclear astrophysics mission which includes a narrow field telescope (NFT) that comprises a wide band Laue lens (60–600 keV) associated with a high performance thick and stacked CdZnTe focal plane operating as spectrometer, imager, and scattering polarimeter has been submitted for the ESA Voyage 2050 long term scientific planning preparation. In this context, and with the aim of optimizing the focal plane configuration of an instrument such as NFT, several studies are underway. In particular, with this work we study some performance issues such as polarimeters of segmented semiconductor detectors at room temperature, such as CdZnTe and cadmium telluride (CdTe), by means of a prototype based on two planar CdTe spectroimagers operating in coincidence. The two CdTe detectors are 2-mm-thick crystals with the anode segmented in $8\times8$ pixels with 2-mm pitch. This prototype configuration allows the Compton polarimetric performance of a spectroimager to be assessed by changing the distance between the two detection layers while operating in the 100–600-keV energy range, thereby allowing the analysis of Compton polarimetry 3-D dependence. The results obtained provide relevant input to the design of large sensitive volume multilayer and 3-D sensitive focal planes.

Polarimetry has been demonstrated essential in various disciplines, such as optical communications, imaging, and astronomy. On-chip nanostructures for polarization measurements are most expected to replace the conventional bulk elements, and hence minimize the polarimeter for integrated applications. Some on-chip nanophotonic polarimeter via polarization detection has been implemented, in which the separation of two spin polarized states is needed. However, due to the relatively low coupling efficiency or complicated photonic silicon circuits, on-chip polarimetry using a single device still remains challenging. Here, we introduce and investigate an on-chip polarimeter with nanostructures using the inverse design method. The developed device shows the ability to detect the four polarization components of light, two of which are the spin polarizations, and the other two are the linear polarizations. The retrieved Stokes parameters with experimentally tested data are in close agreement with the numerical results. We also show the proof of concept demonstration for high-speed Stokes vector optical signals detection. In the high-speed communication experiment with data rate up to 16 GBd, the detected optical signals via polarization measurements at multiple wavelengths in the C-band were recovered with the bit error rate below the 20% forward error correction threshold. The proposed on-chip polarimeter shows promising performance both in Stokes polarimetry and high-speed optical communication applications.

In this paper we describe the Kottamia Faint Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (KFISP) that has been recently developed and designed to be mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the 1.88 m telescope at Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO), Egypt. The optical design of KFISP is developed such that it can be used in various modes of operation. These are: direct imaging, spectroscopic, polarimetric imaging, and spectro-polarimetric. The KFISP is an all-refractive design to meet the polarimetric requirements and includes a focal reducer with a corrector section, collimator section, parallel beam section (containing various imaging components), and camera section. The corrector section gives an unvignetted Field-of-View of 8ʹ × 8ʹ and the collimator section has a focal length of 305 mm and matches the focal ratio of the input beam. The parallel beam section is 200 mm long and near the middle of it there is an image of the telescope pupil. The camera section includes 5 elements and has a focal length of 154.51 mm which gives an instrument effective final focal ratio of f/6.14 (acting as a telescope focal reducer of 1:2 ratio). The KFISP contains an internal calibration system which hosts the calibration light injection system, an integrating sphere equipped with the required calibration light sources. The opto-mechanical parts of KFISP contain a double-layered carbon fiber strut structure and comprises its subsystems of slit and guider assemblies, filter wheel drawer, grism wheel drawer, polarimetric components cubical box, and CCD camera which is integrated with camera optics. The CCD camera has 2048 \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\times$$\end{document}× 2048 pixels with 13.5-micron square pixel size. The camera is cooled by liquid Nitrogen and is fixed to the KFISP through the integrated camera lens. The KFISP has been fully commissioned, mounted and is being tested in all modes of operation. In this paper we introduce the ambitious scientific goals, the optical setups of KFISP, its opto-mechanical implementation and the performance analysis of the instrument. In addition, we describe the camera system, its performance, and its software control. Finally, we present a sample of the first light observations obtained from the instrument.

Plasmonic gold nanorods (GNRs) are finding increasing use in biomedicine due to their unique electromagnetic properties, optical contrast enhancement and biocompatibility; they also show promise as polarization contrast agents. However, quantification of their polarization-enhancing properties within heterogeneous turbid media remains challenging. We report on polarization response in controlled tissue phantoms consisting of dielectric microsphere scatterers with varying admixtures of GRNs. Experimental Mueller matrix measurements and polarization sensitive Monte-Carlo simulations show excellent agreement. Despite the GNRs’ 3D random orientation and distribution in the strong multiply scattering background, significant linear diattenuation and retardance were observed. These exclusive measurable characteristics of GNRs suggest their potential uses as contrast enhancers for polarimetric assessment of turbid biological tissue.

Polarimetric imaging is an effective way for enhancing the image quality in underwater environments. Previous polarization-based methods for underwater imaging actually involve both optical and digital processing, while compared with digital processing, the importance of the optical method is not clear. In this paper, we propose a polarimetric method for underwater imaging based on the Mueller imager. In this method, in order to optimally filter out the backscattered light and enhance the image quality, the polarization states of illumination light together with the polarization filter in front of the camera are synergistically modulated in an optical way. In other words, the quality of images captured by the camera can be directly improved without any digital processing. A series of experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which indeed verifies its superiority in scattering media.

We demonstrate a single-shot uniaxial 3D profilometry system that illuminates a sample with a structured polarization pattern and measures the reflected full-Stokes polarimetric image. Some non-contact 3D measurements require evaluating samples located in a protected environment. For example, this may be a sample under the lid of an acrylic Petri dish, a sample that has a protective film overlay, or products housed inside a plastic container. To deal with these cases, we adapt our measurement system to capture the complete polarization state using a single-shot full-Stokes imaging system consisting of two polarization cameras. This system cannot only measure the dynamic 3D shape at video rate, but can also compensate for any birefringent layers between the illumination arm and the sample under measurement. We present the measurement principles of the system and show the results of a real-time 3D profilometry experiment in which a sample was measured under the lid of an acrylic Petri dish.

In variable polarimetric monopulse radars, due to the number and types of data channels, the polarisation and angle information of the target in the receiving signals are non‐linearly coupled, which results in incorrect polarisation measurement and erroneous angle estimation through a linear digital beam forming (DBF) method. Based on a variable polarimetric monopulse radar with four channels, two non‐linear DBF methods are proposed to improve radar ability. Through the angle monopulse estimation principle and the reciprocity theorem, new pairs of summation and difference signals in all polarisation channels are formed to generate the correct polarimetric scattering and angle estimation results. The simulation and experiment results show that the proposed methods achieve a higher precision of polarisation measurement and more consistent angle estimation results compared to the linear DBF method.

We present the characteristics of dual-polarized weather radar variables as observed by a planar phased-array radar (PPAR) operating at X-band. The characteristics are governed by the projection of the polarizations radiated by the array into the canonical spherical coordinates defining the measurement geometry of ground-based weather radars. The direction-dependent gain and phase of the radiating elements, the orientation of the radiated polarizations, and the mechanical tilting of the array all contribute to the projection, which results in biased observations compared with those of a mechanically scanned weather radar employing a reflector antenna. We decompose the projection into components that can be separated and customized for various PPAR configurations, including consideration of possible cross-polarized radiation by the elements and the effect of a wet radome covering the array face. These are represented by matrices whose product comprises the total projection. We apply this methodology to an X-band PPAR using in-place measurements of precipitation to obtain the properties of the radiation pattern. We then obtain the resulting biases of common weather radar polarimetric variables. We show that the biases can be represented as a product of the intrinsic variables with projection- and target-dependent corrections. The projection-dependent corrections depend only upon elements of the projection matrix, while the target-dependent corrections also depend upon the intrinsic differential reflectivity and copolar or cross-polar correlation coefficients. We find that the projection-dependent corrections are sufficient to achieve acceptable bias over most of the scan range.

Strict registration is critical for imaging polarimetry; a highly accurate registration approach to the coronal image and imaging polarimetry of the Fe 6374 Å red coronal line have been researched in this paper. In order to improve the registration accuracy, this paper proposes the idea of image enhancement based on blind deconvolution combined with noise-adaptive fuzzy equalization algorithms. After image enhancement, the cross-correlation registration algorithm achieves better results. To diagnose a low-temperature corona, the polarization brightness of the red coronal line data and the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO)/KCor data are compared to study the structural features and polarization information of the inner corona. We found that the polarization brightness radiation of the red coronal line has overall features similar to that of the MLSO/KCor data, but it has more detailed features, such as the cavity, polar plume, and interplume characteristics. Active regions, polar plumes, and interplumes show similar performance in red coronal line intensity, polarization brightness, degree of linear polarization, K-corona, and electron density along with the radial height. An interesting finding is that the polarization brightness of the red coronal line changes drastically along with the radial height across the cavity above the solar west limb, while neither the K-corona nor the electron density changes obviously. This seems to be a piece of possible evidence indicating that the red coronal line is not unpolarized in the cavity region.

Inverse problem of Mueller polarimetry is defined as a determination of geometrical features of the metrological structures (i.e. 1D diffraction gratings) from its experimental Mueller polarimetric signature. This nonlinear problem was considered as an optimization problem in a multi-parametric space using the least square criterion and the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. We demonstrated that solving optimization problem with the experimental Mueller matrix spectra taken in conical diffraction configuration helps finding a global minimum and results in smaller variance values of reconstructed dimensions of the grating profile.

This letter presents initial weather measurements with a cylindrical polarimetric phased array radar (CPPAR) demonstrator developed at The University of Oklahoma. The overall system specifications, waveform design, beam pattern measurement, and beam-to-beam calibration of the CPPAR demonstrator are presented. The weather observations of convective precipitation are provided, employing a single-beam mechanical scan and commutating beam electronic scan. Measurement results from these two scan modes are compared, and the error statistics are derived and discussed. A new feature of the CPPAR commutating beam electronic scan in clutter detection is observed and explained.

International audience; The 3D orientation of a single gold nanoparticle is probed experimentally by light scattering polarimetry. We choose high-quality gold bipyramids (AuBPs) that support around 700 nm a well-defined narrow longitudinal localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) which can be considered as a linear radiating dipole. A specific spectroscopic dark-field technique was used to control the collection angles of the scattered light. The in-plane as well as the out-of-plane angles are determined by analyzing the polarization of the scattered radiation. The data are compared with a previously developed model where the environment and the angular collection both play crucial roles. We show that most of the single AuBPs present an out-of-plane orientation consistent with their geometry. Finally, the fundamental role of the collection angles on the determination of the orientation is investigated for the first time. Several features are then deduced: we validate the choice of the analytical 1D model, an accurate 3D orientation is obtained, and the critical contribution of the evanescent waves is highlighted.

In this article, airborne broadband (maximum 400 MHz bandwidth) C-band circularly polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is proposed and developed for further study on airborne compact polarized synthetic aperture radar (CP SAR) system using circular polarization. This article explains the scattering characteristic of circular polarization as the concept of circularly polarized SAR, system configuration, RF system and antenna, ground test, and flight test of circularly polarized SAR in Hinotori-C2 (Firebird-C2) mission onboard CN235MPA aircraft on 14 and 15 March 2018 at South Celebes, Indonesia. The result of the flight test depicts multipath full polarimetric circularly polarized images that show good performance of circularly polarized SAR and matched well to the result of the ground test of a multipolarized single pulse. The circularly polarized scattering clarification using trihedral, cylindrical, and omni corner reflectors (TCR, CCR, and OCR), assessment of circularly polarized image analysis, and image classification using the conventional axial ratio (AR), ellipticity (ε), and polarization ratio (ρ) are discussed. The proposed circularly polarized SAR will enrich the existing CP SAR systems and could be employed in further study of CP SAR calibration technique, also applications development for the environment and disaster monitoring using CP SAR.

A powerful tool for users of radio frequencies (RFs) is the ability to visualize those distributions. Here, the 2-D visualization of RF waves on a circuit board is demonstrated using the fluorescence associated with the double resonance of cesium atoms. The invisible RF waves are upconverted into near-infrared light that can be viewed with an optical camera. In addition, a 2-D visualization image is captured separately for each polarization of the RF magnetic field component using a direct-current magnetic field. The images of the 2-D polarimetry are consistent with finite-element calculations of the distribution of the magnetic field strength.

In this paper, we present a two-dimensional dynamic metasurface aperture to perform computational polarimetric microwave imaging for the first time. First, a novel tunable dual-polarized metamaterial radiator element integrated with two PIN diodes is designed to radiate and capture crossand co-polarized field components. The diodes placed in orthogonal positions are simultaneously switched on or off to configure the transmit and receive polarization states. In diode on state, the metamaterial elements are in off state and the element radiated power is low whereas in diode off state, the metamaterial elements are in on state and the element radiated power is high. By sparsely reconfiguring and random assignment of the developed metamaterial elements across the array aperture, dynamic modulation of the radiated fields is achieved. Using this principle, we synthesize polarimetric, spatio-temporally incoherent wave-chaotic modes that facilitate polarimetric computational imaging. Leveraging the novelty of the dualpolarized dynamic characteristics of the wave-chaotic radiation, polarimetric imaging is computed in the near-field region at K-band frequencies and the polarimetric responses of specific targets are retrieved. The approach is verified by electromagnetic full-wave simulations, and imaging a T-shaped object consisting of two orthogonal metal strips, it is demonstrated that the target characteristics from a set of backscatter measurements compressed by the developed dynamic metasurface antenna

This article focuses on a polarization measurement method based on Mueller calculus for determining the polarization properties of metal substrates. As the Mueller matrix of a medium provides all its polarization-altering properties, the presented method enables to predict the effect of any optically absorbing media on the polarization state of light beam. For the measurement, a polarized beam of light is reflected off the substrate under study and the change in state of polarization is measured in terms of Stokes parameters. Simple formulae have been derived to deduce the values of matrix elements from the measured Stokes parameters. The presented method facilitates determination of the optical properties of any absorbing medium even though the optical constants are unidentified. It has been validated by the estimation of Mueller matrix elements of a few metal reflectors (Cu, Al and SS304) using Fresnel’s equations and comparing the theoretical values with the experimentally determined values. It has been verified further by measuring the complex refractive index of a sample (brass: Cu–Zn alloy) using the principle angle method and comparing the results with that obtained by newly developed method. Since specular reflection often exists in the real captured images and causes deviation between the recorded color and intrinsic color, specular reflection separation can bring advantages to multiple applications that require consistent object surface appearance. However, due to the color of an object is significantly influenced by the color of the illumination, the existing researches still suffer from the near-duplicate challenge, that is, the separation becomes unstable when the illumination color is close to the surface color. In this paper, we derive a polarization guided model to incorporate the polarization information into a designed iteration optimization separation strategy to separate the specular reflection. Based on the analysis of polarization, we propose a polarization guided model to generate a polarization chromaticity image, which is able to reveal the geometrical profile of the input image in complex scenarios, such as diversity of illumination. The polarization chromaticity image can accurately cluster the pixels with similar diffuse color. We further use the specular separation of all these clusters as an implicit prior to ensure that the diffuse components will not be mistakenly separated as the specular components. With the polarization guided model, we reformulate the specular reflection separation into a unified optimization function which can be solved by the ADMM strategy. The specular reflection will be detected and separated jointly by RGB and polarimetric information. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results have shown that our method can faithfully separate the specular reflection, especially in some challenging scenarios.

Light polarization could provide critical visual information (e.g., surface roughness, geometry, or orientation) of the imaged objects beyond prevailing signals of intensity and wavelength. The polarization imaging technology thus has a large potential in broad fields such as object detection. However, intricate polarization coding is often required in these fields, and the existing complicated lensed system and polarizers have limited the miniaturization capabilities of the integrated imaging sensor. In this study, we demonstrate the utilization of two-dimensional (2D) in-plane anisotropic α-GeSe semiconductor to realize the polarizer-free polarization-sensitive visible/near-infrared (VIS-NIR) photodetector/imager. As the key part of the sensor system, this prototype Au/GeSe/Au photodetector exhibits impressive performances in terms of high sensitivity, broad spectral response, and fast-speed operation (∼103 AW−1 400–1050 nm, and 22.7/49.5 µs). Further, this device demonstrates unique polarization sensitivity in the spectral range of 690–1050 nm and broadband absorption of light polarized preferentially in the γ-direction, as predicted by the analysis of optical transition behavior in α-GeSe. Then we have successfully incorporated the 2D GeSe device into an imaging system for the polarization imaging and captured the polarization information of the radiant target with a high contrast ratio of 3.45 at 808 nm (NIR band). This proposed imager reveals the ability to sense dual-band polarization signals in the scene without polarizers and paves the way for polarimetric imaging sensor arrays for advanced applications.

In-plane retardation and out-of-plane retardation by optically anisotropic medium are generally measured with the Mueller polarimeter. We proposed a method for measuring the in-plane retardation and out-of-plane retardation using the Stokes polarimeter. The suggested method requires no polarization state generator, simplifying the measurement system. The retardation measured with the Stokes polarimeter was compared with the data measured with the Mueller polarimeter, and their difference was less than 2.5 nm ( $0.005\lambda$ ). In addition, the suggested method can find the orientation of the slow axis of the retarder and the order of retardation. Although the conventional methods require measurements at multiple wavelengths to distinguish the order of the retardation, the suggested method can find the exact retardation using data at a single wavelength of light.

A polarimetric 3-D synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging method using a radially polarized antenna is described. The advantages of the radially polarized antenna, mainly that polarimetric SAR imaging can be performed without requiring additional measurements compared to traditional SAR, are discussed. A general target model is developed that includes information about target orientation and degree of polarization (i.e., how well and in what direction the target polarizes a signal). Image reconstruction algorithms were developed to allow polarimetric imaging to be performed with radially polarized antenna imaging data, enabling the estimation of target orientation and degree of polarization. The effect of scan step size and scan aperture size is studied on the accuracy of the estimation of these parameters, and guidelines were established as to the proper step size and scan aperture size to be used to keep estimation error below a specific threshold. Subsequently, a radially polarized antenna was designed, fabricated, and used to image several samples containing various types of point targets, by which the capability of this technique to enable accurate estimation of target orientation and degree of polarization is successfully demonstrated.

We propose a polarimetric imaging processing method based on feature fusion and apply it to the task of target detection. Four images with distinct polarization orientations were used as one parallel input, and they were fused into a single feature map with richer feature information. We designed a learning feature fusion method using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The fusion strategy was derived from training. Meanwhile, we generated a dataset involving one original image, four polarization orientation images, ground truth masks, and bounding boxes. The effectiveness of our method was compared to that of conventional deep learning methods. Experimental results revealed that our method gets a 0.80 mean average precision (mAP) and a 0.09 miss rate (MR), which are both better than the conventional deep learning method.

Validation of remote sensing retrievals of aerosol microphysical and optical properties requires in situ measurements of the same properties. We present here an improved imaging nephelometer for measuring the directionality and polarization of light (i.e., polarimetry) scattered at two wavelengths (405 and 660 nm) with high temporal resolution. The instrument was designed for airborne deployment and is capable of ground-based measurements as well. The laser imaging nephelometer (LiNeph) uses two orthogonal detectors with wide-angle lenses and linearly polarized light sources to measure both the phase function, P11(θ), and degree of linear polarization, -P12/P11(θ). In this work, we will describe the instrument function and calibration, as well as data acquisition and reduction. The instrument was first deployed aboard the NASA DC-8 during the 2019 FIREX-AQ campaign. Here, we present field measurements of smoke plumes that show that the LiNeph has sufficient resolution for 0.24 Hz polarimetric measurements at two wavelengths, 405 and 660 nm, at integrated scattering coefficients ranging from 50–8000 Mm−1.

Polarimetric radar systems are beneficial to identifying and classifying targets but require multiple transmit or receive channels with different polarizations. This leads to a high hardware effort and thus higher costs. To use a single, linear polarized radar sensor as a polarimetric system, a frequency-dependent, polarization rotating reflector which can be placed in front of the radar antenna is presented. The reflector is based on a frequency selective surface (FSS) consisting of slot-excited substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonators. Resonator modes are analyzed and an equivalent circuit diagram to describe the filter functionality is developed. For using the described FSS as reflective structure, the design focuses on 45° oblique incidence. Different field vectors for normal and oblique incident angles are considered and different cavity modes for these cases are analyzed. An undesired mode is suppressed by an additional plated through via hole and slot impedances are matched. Reflector designs for normal and oblique incident angles are presented for $15 GHz$ ( $Ku$ -band) and afterward adapted to $35 GHz$ ( $Ka$ -band). The frequency band of operation with ${12\%}$ fractional bandwidth is divided into two ${4.5\%}$ subbands which allows a frequency-dependent polarization rotation of a linear polarized electromagnetic wave. Investigations on the fabrication accuracies are presented and reflectors for both bands are manufactured. Measurements are performed with a vector network analyzer and results fit well to the simulated curves. In the band of polarization rotation reflection, the matching is better than $- 13 dB$ and dielectric losses of less than $1 dB$ are achieved.

Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags (x, y, z: space; t: time of arrival; and ψ: angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium., Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival due to the limited speeds of electronic sensors. Compact-hybrid SAR (CP) is a dual-polarization (dual-pol) SAR mode that transmits a circular polarization (CirP) and measures the received signal at the horizontal and vertical antenna polarization. It is now admitted that the actual SAR technology does not permit the generation of a perfectly CirP and this may significantly affect CP radiometric and phase information. Since all the existing CP calibration models assume a perfectly transmitted CirP, there is an immediate need for the development of a new model that permits efficient assessment and calibration of CP non-circularity. In this article, a new general polarimetric hybrid SAR model (PolHyb) is introduced for both dual- (CP) and quad-polarization hybrid SAR modes. PolHyb explicitly includes the transmitted polarization non-circularity, in addition to conventional radar transmit and receive distortion matrices, channel imbalances and Faraday rotation contamination. The non-circularity of transmitted polarization is expressed in terms of the axial ratio (AR), which used to be popular in the 1960s for characterization of circularly polarized (transmit and receive) dual- and quad-polarization radar. The new CP model derived from PolHyb is adapted to PALSAR2-CP and used as the basis of an efficient method for an assessment of CP non-circularity using Amazonian rainforests. PALSAR2-CP data collected at four different beams (H2–6 to H2–9), with incidence angle varying between 30° and 45°, allows for the first ever demonstration of non-circularity of PALSAR2 CP transmitted polarization. Although it is lower than 0.5 dB for H2–6 and H2–7, the AR of PALSAR2-CP transmitted polarization increases significantly with incidence angle to reach up to 1 dB at Beam H2–8, and 2.3 dB at the highest incidence angles of Beam H2–9.

A novel application of a combined and enhanced NSOM-AFM tip-photodetector system resulted in a nanoscale Polarimeter, generated by four different holes, each sharing a different shape, and enabling that the four photonic readouts forming the tip will be the four Stokes coefficients, this in order to place the polarization state in the Poincare sphere. The new system has been built on standard Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) cantilever, in order to serve as a triple-mode scanning system, sharing complementary scanning topography, optical data analysis and polarization states. This new device, which has been designed and simulated using Comsol Multi-Physics software package, consists in a Platinum-Silicon drilled conical photodetector, sharing subwavelength apertures, and has been processed using advanced nanotechnology tools on a commercial silicon cantilever. After a comparison study of drilled versus filled tips advantages, and of several optics phenomena such as interferences, the article presents the added value of multiple-apertures scanning tip for nano-polarimetry.

The glass capillary plate (CP) gas detector is a hole-type micropattern gas detector (MPGD) as well as a gas electron multiplier (GEM). An interesting feature of the hole-type MPGD is that since the electron multiplication takes place in each of the highly granulated holes, pixelized 2-D imaging with a high position resolution is possible. Using the CP, we have been developing a gas scintillation imager (GSI) for digital X-ray radiography, cosmic X-ray polarimetry, and neutron imaging. To realize the 2-D imaging capability, we exploit the visible and near-infrared (NIR) scintillation photons emitted from each hole upon gas excitation. This emission occurs simultaneously with electron multiplication. The readout of the scintillation photons has been carried out using an image-intensified charge-coupled device (CCD) or CMOS camera, or a cooled low-noise CCD/CMOS camera, coupled to an optical mirror or lens systems. In this article, we review the properties of the GSI as X-ray and neutron imagers and describe the outlook for future developments.

Current vertical-beam entomological radars record the polarization direction corresponding to the maximal ventral-aspect radar cross section (RCS) as the insect’s orientation. For so-called “parallel” insects, this direction is indeed their orientation; but for “perpendicular” insects, it is at right angles to the orientation. Current entomological radars cannot discriminate the parallel and perpendicular cases. This article shows here that discrimination is possible using the relative phase of the scattering matrix (SM) eigenvalues. Multifrequency fully polarimetric ventral aspect SM measurements of 80 insect specimens of 12 species have been made in a microwave anechoic chamber. The relationship of the polarization direction corresponding to the maximal RCS and the radar frequency has been analyzed, and from these results a method of discriminating parallel and perpendicular insects, based on the relative phase of the SM eigenvalues, is proposed. The method is applicable to X- and Ku-band observations, with a high correct-identification rate, and can be used with both fully polarimetric entomological radars and coherent rotating-polarization units, but not with the noncoherent rotating-polarization configuration used in traditional vertical-looking radars (VLRs). Finally, the performance of the method is discussed, and it is found that it has better performance for middle and large insects at X-band and small and middle insects at Ku-band.

Polarimetric multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) radar is capable of acquiring target’s high-resolution images and polarization scattering matrix (PSM). In this article, calibration of a polarimetric MIMO array of an instrumentation radar for near-field measurement is achieved at ${X}$ -band by using a rotatable double-antenna polarimetric active radar calibrator (RODAPARC) and a metal cylinder quickly and accurately. The theoretical PSM of the RODAPARC with different antenna rotation angles is derived from Huygens’ radiation electric field which is applicable to different bistatic angles. A polarimetric signal model is adopted to reduce the impact of the RODAPARC on calibration. Experimental studies are conducted on a polarimetric MIMO array which is measured and divided into quasi-monostatic and bistatic transceiver channels for assessment on the calibration performance. Promising calibration results are obtained with a polarization isolation improvement of about 16 dB and great reduction of the polarization channel gain error less than ±0.5 dB in amplitude and ±3° in phase. The calibrated polarization signatures for classic objects are consistent with the theoretical results.

Bubbles are ubiquitous in the natural environment, where different substances and phases of the same substance forms globules due to differences in pressure and surface tension. Total internal reflection occurs at the interface of a bubble, where light travels from the higher refractive index material outside a bubble to the lower index material inside a bubble at appropriate angles of incidence, which can lead to a phase shift in the reflected light. Linearly polarized skylight can be converted to elliptically polarized light with efficiency up to 53% by single scattering from the water-air interface. Total internal reflection from air bubble in water is one of the few sources of elliptical polarization in the natural world. Stationary and dynamic scenes of air bubbles in water in both indoor and outdoor settings are studied using an imaging polarimeter. Our results are important for studies in fluid dynamics, remote sensing, and polarimetry.
