Abstract

International audience; Specular and mirror-like surfaces are difficult to reconstruct by the fact that light of the surrounding environment is reflected off the surface. Nowadays, it is still a challenge in many application fields to get a fast and accurate reconstruction of specular objects. 3D acquisition by deflectometry involves estimating the 3D profile of a specular surface by analyzing the image of a light source or a pattern captured by a camera after reflection on the surface. These techniques require the knowledge of the location and the orientation of the camera and the orientation of the light source. If camera calibration is a process widely known and controlled and guaranteeing good accuracy, estimating the orientation of the light source is still an issue. We propose to overcome it by using a light source whose the color changes according to the orientation. Indeed, we implement a vision system of light source's position recognition by the color in simulation with the 3D computer graphics software Blender, we define a calibration technique and we suggest some possible light sources to export our simulated vision system to reality. Plus, we explore the potential benefit of light field in order to model such a system.

Abstract

Conventional methods used to inspect the molten pool surface induced by arc welding processes are based on post-welding evaluation using destructive or semi-destructive testing methods. Many attempts were performed to develop alternative and nondestructive tests. In this context, a polarimetric vision methodology is evaluated. The polarimetric parameters are measured from the thermal radiations emitted by the hot liquid metal at a wavelength within an arc plasma blind spectral window. The Stokes parameters and their segmentation within a Gaussian mixture model allow to discriminate artifacts at the surface of the liquid metal. After weld pool solidification, the use of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy allow to identify the artifacts, i.e., floating alumina particles.

Abstract

International audience; Calibration of a camera have various applications in computer vision. This process is particularly challenging with a thermal camera instead of a standard color one. A calibration target with two layers of different thermal emissivity is commonly used but reflects appear and degrade the corner extraction of the chessboard. While traditional and commonly used methods heat the target chessboard, we cool it down that inverts the distribution of emission of the two layers. The reflects on the reflective layer enhance the contrast instead of decreasing it. Experiments on various configurations and orientations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract

Thermal imaging is nowadays widely used in many industrial areas for non destructive analysis. This paper focuses on the detection by active thermography of cracks in a transparent and specular piece of glass. A continuous laser scans the target by creating a hot spot that is acquired by a thermal camera. A thermal map is computed by averaging of thermal measurements for all the positions of the hot spot on the target. Then edge filters are applied to highlight the cracks. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the material damage estimation in a short processing time.

Abstract

International audience; This paper describes the use of polarization information to estimate the shape of emissive objects in the field of non-conventional imaging techniques for 3D digitization. Using "Shape from Polarization" method which is applied in the far infrared for transparent object and in the near infrared for the molten metal. Our study shows that by studying the state of polarization of the emitted radiation from the object, normal of the surface can be determined and subsequently the 3D shape.

Abstract

International audience; The EU imposes standards for the use of wood in structural applications. Local singularities such as knots affect the wood mechanical properties. They can be revealed by looking at the wood fiber orientation. For this reason, many methods were proposed to estimate the orientation of wood fiber using optical means, X-rays, or scattering measurement techniques. In this paper, an approach to assess the wood fiber orientation based on thermal ellipsometry is developed. The wood part is punctually heated with a Nd-YAG Laser and the thermal response is acquired by an infrared camera. The thermal response is elliptical due to the propagation of the heat through and along the wood fibers. An experiment is presented to show the capacity of such techniques to assess fiber orientation on wood specimen. In addition, an appropriate algorithm is given to extract the orientation of the ellipse.

Abstract

The search for an efficient on-line monitoring system focused on the real-time analysis of arc welding quality is an active area of research. The topography and the superficial temperature field of the weld pool can provide important information which can be used to regulate the welding parameters for depositing consistent welds. One difficulty relies on accessing this information despite the bright dazzling welding arc. In the present work, Stokes polarimetry and associated shape-from-polarization methods are applied for the analysis of the weld pool through its 810 nm-wavelength infrared emissions. The obtained information can provide a better understanding of the process, such as the usage of the topography to seek Marangoni flows direction, or to have a denser 3D map to improve numerical simulation models.

A nondestructive inspection method using an infrared detection system is presented in this paper; the system uses a YAG laser as excitation point. The material thermal response to this excitation is processed for the detection of volume defects, this technique integrated into a 3D scanning system allows us to get a 3D scan of the object as well as defects detection.

Abstract

International audience; We present a method to recover the 3D shape of both front and back surfaces of smooth transparent objects, such as glass windows or containers. We use a combination of two methods known for the 3D reconstruction of specular surfaces: shape from distortion and shape from polarization. As each transparent surface reflects and transmits incident light, one can see two shifted images by observing the reflection of a pattern on two surfaces nearby. Looking at the reflection of one known point source on the front surface with a calibrated camera, the depth and the orientation of this surface can be determined up to a one dimensional space of solution. This ambiguity is lifted by using the degree of polarization of the reflection, which depends on the incidence angle. Supposing that the front surface is locally at, we show that there is the same ambiguity between position and orientation for the observed reflection coming from the back surface of the object. This ambiguity can again be lifted by using ray-tracing and Mueller calculus. Thus our method enables to measure both the position and the orientation of the two surfaces of a transparent object, with only one polarimetric image. We present an experiment on real objects to evaluate this method.

Abstract

This paper presents a passive polarimetry method using a division of aperture optical device in order to measure the temperature distribution at the weld pool surface. Thermal emission from a hot liquid metal was investigated at a near-infrared wavelength corresponding to a blind spectral window of a helium plasma generated during gas tungsten arc welding process. The refractive index of liquid metal and the surface radiance are deduced from the polarisation state of thermal emissions. Abstract

A vision-based method is proposed to measure the 3D shape of external and internal surfaces (not accessible) of smooth transparent objects. Looking at the reflections of point sources on a specular surface with a polarimetric camera, we combine the measurements of two techniques: shape from distortion and shape from polarization. It permits us to recover the position and orientation of the specular surface for each detected point. The internal surface of transparent objects exhibiting as well a specular component, the same technique is used on the highlights coming from the back surface, taking into account the refraction by using polarimetric ray tracing.

Abstract

The polarimetric state of the thermal radiations emitted by the weld metal contains geometric information about the emitting surface. Even though the analysed thermal radiation has a wavelength corresponding to a blind spectral window of the arc plasma, the physical presence of the arc plasma itself interferes with the rays radiated by the weld pool surface before attaining the polarimeter, thus modifying the geometric information transported by the ray. In the present work, the effect of the arc plasma-surrounding zone on the polarimetric state and propagation direction of the radiated ray is analyzed. The interaction with the arc plasma zone induces a drop in ray intensity and a refraction of ray optical path.

Abstract

International audience; Many experimental techniques and many commercial solutions have been proposed to realize non-contact 3D digitization of industrial objects. Unfortunately, the performances of active 3D scanners depend on the optical properties of the surface to digitize. That is why the results obtained by active 3D triangulation on specular or transparent surfaces are not as good as those obtained on diffuse surfaces. In this paper, we present the developments we have realized to address highly reflective metallic surfaces. These developments are based on the extension of a technique, called "Scanning from heating" and initially dedicated to glass material. In comparison to conventional active triangulation techniques that measure the reflection of visible radiation, we measure here the thermal emission of a surface, which is locally heated by a laser source. We describe in this paper the successive steps we have followed to adapt Scanning From Heating to metallic materials, to evaluate the performances and finally to develop an operational prototype. Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) digitization of manufactured objects has been investigated for several years and consequently, many techniques have been proposed. Even if some techniques have been successfully commercialized, most of them assume a diffuse or near diffuse reflectance of the object’s surface, and difficulties remain for the acquisition of “optically non cooperative” surfaces, such as transparent or specular ones. To address such surfaces, we propose a non conventional technique, called “Scanning from Heating” (SfH). In contrast to classical active triangulation techniques that acquire the reflection of visible light, we measure the thermal emission of the heated surface. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, by using the experimental setup designed for specular (transparent or not) objects, how this method allows reconstruction both of internal and external surfaces of glass objects from a unique measure.

Abstract

For the past two decades, the need for three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of industrial objects has increased significantly and many experimental techniques and commercial solutions have been proposed. However, difficulties remain for the acquisition of optically non-cooperative surfaces, such as transparent or specular surfaces. To address highly reflective metallic surfaces, we propose the extension of a technique that was originally dedicated to glass objects. In contrast to conventional active triangulation techniques that measure the reflection of visible radiation, we measure the thermal emission of a surface, which is locally heated by a laser source. Considering the thermophysical properties of metals, we present a simulation model of heat exchanges that are induced by the process, helping to demonstrate its feasibility on specular metallic surfaces and predicting the settings of the system. With our experimental device, we have validated the theoretical modeling and computed some 3-D point clouds from specular surfaces of various geometries. Furthermore, a comparison of our results with those of a conventional system on specular and diffuse parts will highlight that the accuracy of the measurement no longer depends on the roughness of the surface. Abstract

The Scanning From Heating is a 3D scanning approach initially developed to realise 3D acquisition of transparent or specular surfaces. A laser source is used to create a local heating point. An infrared camera is used to observe the IR radiation emitted by the scene. The 2D coordinates of the heated point are computed in the 2D image of the camera. Knowing the parameters of the system (which are obtained by a previous calibration), the 3D coordinates of the point are computed using triangulation method. In this article we will present an extension of this technique. We propose here to analyse the shape of the hot spot observed by the IR camera, and, from the analysis to determine information on the local orientation of the surface at each measured point.

Abstract

3D surface acquisition is a subject which has been studied to a large extent. A significant number of techniques for acquiring shape have been proposed, and a wide range of commercial solutions are available. Nevertheless, today’s systems still have difficulties when digitizing objects with non-Lambertian surfaces in the visible light spectrum, as is the case of transparent, semi-transparent or highly reflective materials (e.g. glass, crystals, some plastics and shiny metals). In this chapter, some of the issues of traditional scanning systems are addressed by considering various approaches using the radioactive properties of materials, the polarization information of the reflected light as well as the generated fluorescence applied to the digitization of transparent object These approaches led to three recent techniques which can be referred as shape from polarization, shape from fluorescence as well as shape from heating (SFH). The two latest approaches will be exposed throughout this chapter.

In this paper we present an application on this kind of material of an approach called "Scanning From Heating". This approach has been developed initially for 3D reconstruction of transparent objects. This article presents an application of the working principle of SFH method on material with high thermal conductivity.

In this paper, some of the issues of traditional scanning systems are addressed by considering the radiative properties of materials. As a result, an infrared laser light-based scanner is presented for successfully acquiring the shape of complex surfaces by analyzing heat patterns that are emitted by the object.

Today, with quality becoming increasingly important, each product requires three-dimensional in-line quality control. On the other hand, the 3D reconstruction of transparent objects is a very difficult problem in computer vision due to transparency and specularity of the surface. This paper proposes a new method, called Scanning From Heating (SFH), to determine the surface shape of transparent objects using laser surface heating and thermal imaging. Furthermore, the application to transparent glass is discussed and results on different surface shapes are presented.

International audience; Correlation retinas measure the correlation product of an image projected on a sensor by optical means and a function f(x, y) stored in the retina. Unfortunately, these architectures are not programmable and are dedicated to specific applications. Moment functions are of great interest in pattern recognition. This application needs to compute, for example, geometric moments whose order can depend on the application. Thus, the implementation of this function in a correlation retina requires a flexible architecture where the function f(x, y) can be modified to allow the measurement of the product of the image under analysis and f(x, y). The most robust solution is to memorize f(x, y) in memory devices distributed in the array of pixels constituting the retina. But, for technological problems, it is necessary to limit the number of bits used to store f(x, y) in the sensor. In this article, we propose to use dithering algorithms to code f(x, y) on only one bit. We present herein the architecture of the retina circuit on which we are currently working and show that it is possible to obtain approximate geometric moment values with it.

Abstract

International audience; We have designed and fabricated a programmable retina that is capable of recognizing patterns stored in memory in real-time. Each of the pixels of the retina is composed of a photodiode and an electronic device used during the programming phase to digitize the image of the pattern to recognize into a binary image stored in latches. The array of pixels is thus partitioned into two complementary disjoint sub-sets with all the photodiodes of the same sub-set connected together in order to obtain the sum total of the currents. During the analysis phase, an optical correlation between the projected image and the reference binary image memorized in the circuit is done. The result is read-out as two voltages representing the following two currents: a “white” current proportional to the luminous flux falling on the photodiodes pertaining to the “white” part of the binary reference image and a “black” current corresponding to the black part. By comparing these two voltages to expected values, a shift of the pattern or a difference between the observed and programmed pattern can be detected. The retina has been fabricated in standard 0.6μm CMOS technology with three layers of metal from Austria Micro Systems. It consists of a 100×100 pixels image sensor. We present here an application of this sensor for industrial positioning system.

Abstract

International audience; In this Letter, a vision-based remote sensing methodology is proposed to measure the topography of weld pool surfaces from one single view. Thermal radiations emitted by the hot liquid metal at a wavelength within the arc plasma blind spectral window are acquired by a wavefront division polarimetric system. The refractive index of the liquid metal and the topography of the weld pool surface are inferred from the polarimetric state of the thermal radiations.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we investigated the possibility of getting wide-field images of corneal endothelium for patients. An optical set-up coupled to a numerical reconstruction based on Structured Illumination Mircoscopy (SIM) has been developped in order to isolate the tiny volume wich contains the endothelial mono-layer found at the inner surface of the cornea. At this moment, this imaging system seems compromised for patients and futhur refinement are investigated for stored humans corneas banks.
