Fires occur seasonally in Southern Africa, from June to November, increasing tropospheric aerosol loading and triggering harmful consequences for the environment and human health. This study aims to examine 13 years of aerosol optical characteristics and types over Southern Africa and Reunion Island. Using AERONET sun photometers and MODIS observations, we found that a high aerosol optical depth and Angström exponent are associated with two predominant types of aerosols (biomass burning/urban industrial and mixed type) throughout the spring season. According to CALIOP observations, the major aerosol types with occurrence frequencies above 10% are polluted continental/smoke, polluted dust, and elevated smoke, whereas dust, clean continental, and dusty marine have occurrence frequencies below 1%. In comparison to other seasons, the vertical profiles of elevated smoke have different shapes in spring, with a seasonal shift in the peak altitude (from 3–4 km), when fire activity is at its maximum. At these altitudes, the northern regions presented occurrence frequencies of 32% on average, while lower values were found for the southern or farthest regions (<10–20% on average). The Lagrangian HYSPLIT model back-trajectories demonstrated eastward transport, with air masses from South America and the Atlantic Ocean that recirculate around the study sites. The present study focused on investigating the aerosol optical properties and direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) using the AERONET Sunphotometer measurements conducted during 2011–2017 over an urban-industrial city, Pretoria (25.75° S, 28.28° E) located in the Northwest of South Africa (SA). Results revealed high aerosol optical depth (AOD440) and Ångström exponent (AE440–870) during SON (0.28 ± 0.09, 1.46 ± 0.16) and DJF (0.24 ± 0.07, 1.48 ± 0.18) indicating the dominance of anthropogenic fine-mode aerosols from biomass burning. The single scattering albedo (SSA440) reached a maximum of 0.90 ± 0.05 in DJF and minimum (0.85 ± 0.04) during JJA. The source analysis from the concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) model exhibited large heterogeneity in all seasons. However, the region is influenced by distinct aerosol types with the abundance of anthropogenic fine absorbing aerosols (86%) and the invisible ratio of dust particles. In addition, the aerosol volume size distribution (VSD) increased with an increasing AOD, exhibiting a bimodal lognormal structure, with a more pronounced peak in fine- relative to coarse-mode particles. Further, the inversion products showed a strong spectral dependence in SSA with substantial heterogeneity in all seasons. At last, the Santa Barbara DISORT Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model showed that the DARF within the atmosphere was more pronounced during SON (46.71 W m−2) and JJA (46.39 W m−2) due to significant differences in AOD and SSA, with an annual mean value of 33.16 W m−2, and the corresponding atmospheric heating rate of 0.96 K day−1. The study provides information on the existing aerosol distribution and their potential impact on climatic change over an urban city in the Northwest of SA and could form a basis for policymaking over the region. This study investigates the influence of the 2015 Calbuco eruption (41.2 ∘ S, 72.4 ∘ W; Chile) on the total columnar aerosol optical properties over the Southern Hemisphere. The well-known technic of sun photometry was applied for the investigation of the transport and spatio-temporal evolution of the optical properties of the volcanic plume. The CIMEL sun photometer measurements performed at six South American and three African sites were statistically analysed. This study involves the use of the satellite observations and a back-trajectory model. The passage of the Calbuco plume is statistically detectable in the aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations obtained from sun photometer and MODIS observations. This statistical detection confirms that the majority of the plume was transported over the northeastern parts of South America and reached the South African region 1 week after the eruption. The plume impacted the southern parts of South America to a lesser extent. The highest AOD anomalies were observed over the northeastern parts of South America. Over the South African sites, the AOD anomalies induced by the spread of the plume were quite homogeneously distributed between the east and west coasts. The optical characteristics of the plume near the source region were consistent with an ash-bearing plume. Conversely, sites further from the Calbuco volcano were influenced by ash-free plume. The optical properties discussed in this paper will be used as inputs for numerical models for further investigation of the ageing of the Calbuco plume in a forthcoming study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
