This article reviews the past and present scientific reports regarding Bithynia spp. focusing on the biology, ecology and life cycle of Bithynia snails and their responses to Opisthorchis viverrini infection. Moreover, new data regarding comparative molecular genomics and proteomic approaches have recently revealed novel molecular components involved in the immune defence responses from Bithynia spp., providing additional perspectives for future studies.
