The article discusses the job description, qualifications, and responsibilities of an ophthalmic-optometric assistant. It says that an ophthalmic-optometric assistant is a professional with a high school diploma, with outstanding interpersonal skills, and with a professional behavior who is supervised by an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. To be an ophthalmic-optometric assistant, one has to complete one year of supervised ophthalmic specific on the job training and/or are a graduate of an accredited ophthalmic-optometric assistant/technical program. Although under the supervision of an ophthalmologist or optometrist, it notes that ophthalmic-optometric assistants are likewise required to use their logical skills for independent thinking and discretionary action.

The author reflects on the importance of knowing the distinction between science and art of medicine. He states that science includes designing and creating technology for effective medical care, while art is knowing when to use new technology and how to dispense it economically. He also challenges ophthalmologists to discover new ways to make science of medicine available to all locations.
