With this research, will describe the characteristics of free software and its legal implications. In this scenario, it is not unaware of the intellectual effort of those producing technology (hardware, software, expertise, among others). Except that is practiced has been distorted by creating risks to keep its knowledge and access to a select group of hegemony. As a result, today there is a possibility that through general public license rights to be enshrined authors, in a framework of greater flexibility (copyleft). The methodology is descriptive - explanatory, with a review Bibliographic and library records on the subject.
