In a national emergency, the population is capable to respond with adequate solutions within hours, provided they have a platform to prioritize needs (popular consensus), and create common projects. Such participatory process avoids the pitfalls of top-down, centralized decision-making: power stakes, misconception of field realities, limited workload, popular resistance, unintended consequences. We present how the Swiss culture of direct democracy can be boosted with open-source technology. Humans better cope with crises when they contribute to collective decisions and solutions. In this poster, we present a way to help large groups: 1) agree on common goals (popular consensus) and prioritize contributions needed; 2) join efforts to co-create a minimal number of freely reproducible initiatives that benefit all (open-source software, hardware, law proposals). Between March and June 2020, 154’000 people took part in 136 hackathons against COVID. This equals 957’000 days of volunteering, for 17’700 projects released. 957’000 days of contributions equals 3’800 people working full time during a year. 3800 people developing 17’000 projects means each project must be realized by a person in < 3 month. Imagine these 154’000 people transform into one living organism. What could we dream this ‘super-body’ could achieve? The model presented replicates how the body works: as little information as needed (vs information overload): each person closely interacts with 14 people. coordinated work across teams (vs waste of resources): every individual contributes to one congruent whole. Leaders can rely on autonomous teams to support them. Individuals support each other to be part of a meaningful whole. There is a feeling of belonging, and projects sustain. The COVID-19 pandemic is a great challenge to our global society, exposing our limitations as well as new ways to generate adequate responses to global crises. Communities and individuals have spontaneously organized to deal with this crisis. Thousands of skillful individuals have engaged in the development of mechanical ventilators and masks, SARS-CoV-2 test kits, mobile applications for contact tracking and for coordinating mutual help and care, to name just a few. Context Many teams develop solutions to fight the coronavirus: 60 events [archive] in March, EU-wide event on April 24-26, etc. Problems ・Lack of global coordination between people, projects, events. ・No sound way to rapidly assess projects and to get or produce them locally at minimal cost for people in need. Example / first project ・Many people around the world die because they have no access to ventilation machines. ・Over 60 groups of volunteers are developing freely reproducible ventilation machines. Goals ・Mutualize efforts across the world. ・Develop one example adaptable to achieve health for all – today, only one human in two has access to essential care. Today, a coronavirus hackathon can mobilize 1000s of volunteers. 60000 people may join the European Union event on April 24-26. How many lives saved if 6000 teams compete? If they collaborate? Could we get inspired by watching how body parts work? This presentation proposes three contracts / four steps implementation to enhance our group dynamics, so that we ensure collective success for more lives saved.

The pandemic results in unprecedented collaborations. In March, 60+ hackathons were organized. The biggest rallied 18000 people, creating 1200 projects in 4 days. To ensure these efforts save lives, we need to cooperate beyond events / projects. Example: how to ensure people in all countries can locally produce one ventilation machine, from the 65+ open versions 3 being build? This presentation proposes new ways of working together, so that everyone will be able to afford a healthy and decent life.

Poster presented at the General Meeting of the Global Alliance against Respiratory Diseases in Beijing. Background: Worldwide, 6 people out of 10 have no access to treatment, or are not encouraged to follow it. Air pollution alone kills 7 million people yearly, reduces our life expectancy by 20 months, and costs 6% the gross world product. Devices to assess lung capacity remain often unavailable in low / middle income countries. Actions: We co-create inclusive, open science knowledge: open source breath and air quality controllers, and libre / gratis education to reduce risks and make care fun. Learnings: Awareness: breath as a way to feel life, from childhood. Universal health: mutualizing resources to end poverty. Partnership: reducing barriers with remote participation. Breathing is the first and last act of life. Respiratory diseases are on the rise. In Canada, people affected may increase by 32% between 2010 and 2030, and cost double to 24 billion dollars yearly. How can we create ongoing, open data that inform public health and research? How can we make learning engaging? How can we change mindsets within healthcare systems? How can ensure everyone, everywhere has access to lifesaving innovation? How can we empower individuals to care for their respiratory health and that of others? All problems identified have common threads. We propose to change the approach to health with open collaboration.
