1. A numerical modeling study of the Southern Senegal upwelling shelf: Circulation and upwelling source waters

Abstract

The regional ocean circulation along the Southern Senegal shelf is studied using a numerical model for varying forcing fields during the upwelling season (November-May). The main objective is to study the shelf circulation of the marine environment in the Southern Senegal Upwelling Shelf (SSUS), the Lagrangian pathways by which waters are transported to the surface in the upwelling tongue and the fate of these waters. Model results are compared with hydrographic measurements during UPSEN2-ECOAO survey and satellite images datasets. The upwelling source waters and also the warm nearshore waters are analyzed, from a Lagrangian point of view, by computing the paths of particles that are passively advected by the regional ocean model velocity field (ROMS). It was found that the model is capable of representing the main characteristics of the SSUS whose Sea Surface Temperature (SST) patterns and their variability have an important similarities but the assessment of the current simulated by the model is less obvious because of the few available observations. The present results suggest that high frequency of wind has a strong influence over the mesoscale patterns of the cross-shore circulation in association with local topography and the presence of the Cape Verde peninsula. These cross-shore circulations are dominated by an onshore flow around 14.5°N and an offshore flow around 14.1°N. The onshore flow is in agreement with the previous eulerian studies regarding the coastal divergence of the surface flow (upwelling) that was strongly localized within a few tens of kilometers south of the Cape Verde in the Hann Bight. Lagrangian experiments show also very clearly that coastal warm waters are upwelling waters that were advected from Hann Bight and underwent a strong warming by the heat flux from the atmosphere to the ocean in a shallow area (∼10 m); therefore, easy to warm up. All numerical solutions have shown a tendency of upwelling particles remaining on the shelf for more than a month. These results may explain the enrichment of water in the SSUS and suggest the need to consider the whole shelf as a retention area. Abstract

International audience; We investigate Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis recruitment success relative to the variability of oceanographic conditions in Senegalese waters using generalized additive models (GAM). Results show that recruitment of both species is marked by a strong intra-annual (seasonal) variation with minimum and maximum in winter and summer, respectively. Their interannual variations are synchronous until 2006 (recruitment decreasing), while from 2007 there is no synchrony. The model developed shows that sardinella recruitment variability is closely related to the tested environmental variables in the study area. However, the key environmental variables influencing the recruitment success are different for both species: the Coastal Upwelling Index and the sea surface temperature for S.aurita and S.maderensis, respectively. We report that recruitment success of S.aurita and S.maderensis are associated with distinct ranges of sea surface temperature, upwelling intensity, wind-induced turbulence, concentration of chlorophyll-a and north Atlantic oscillation index. Considering food security and socio-economic importance of both stocks, we recommend that consideration is given to the environmental variability in the small pelagic fish national management plans, particularly in the context of climate change.

Abstract

Senegal is the southern tip of the Canary upwelling system. Its coastal ocean hosts an upwelling center which shapes sea surface temperatures between latitudes 12 degrees and 15 degrees N. Near this latter latitude, the Cape Verde headland and a sudden change in shelf cross-shore profile are major sources of heterogeneity in the southern Senegal upwelling sector (SSUS). SSUS dynamics is investigated by means of Regional Ocean Modeling System simulations. Configuration realism and resolution (triangle x approximate to 2 km) are sufficient to reproduce the SSUS frontal system. Our main focus is on the 3-D upwelling circulation which turns out to be profoundly different from 2-D theory: cold water injection onto the shelf and upwelling are strongly concentrated within a few tens of kilometers south of Cape Verde and largely arise from flow divergence in the alongshore direction; a significant fraction of the upwelled waters are retained nearshore over long distances while travelling southward under the influence of northerly winds. Another source of complexity, regional-scale alongshore pressure gradients, also contributes to the overall retention of upwelled waters over the shelf. Varying the degree of realism of atmospheric and oceanic forcings does not appreciably change these conclusions. This study sheds light on the dynamics and circulation underlying the recurrent sea surface temperature pattern observed during the upwelling season and offers new perspectives on the connections between the SSUS physical environment and its ecosystems. It also casts doubt on the validity of upwelling intensity estimations based on simple Ekman upwelling indices at such local scales.

Abstract

International audience; This study investigated variations of landings of two key species, Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis, in Senegalese waters over a ten-year period (2004-2013). Using generalized additive models, it was found that fishing gear played a major role in explaining differences in monthly landings for both species (51-71% deviance explained). Its effect was more significant in the southern part of Senegal. Fishing effort (number of trips) accounted only for 4-18% of variability in landings. Purse seine (PS) fishing was the most important contributor to the landings of both species. In addition, in the southern area, surrounding gillnet fishing was also important for S. maderensis. Modeling results showed that the relationship between monthly effort and landings was generally positive and leveling off, while it was dome shaped for PSs and surrounding gillnets. Thus, when estimating fishing effort indices for management in Senegal, it is necessary to account for differences in fishing gears and the non-linear relationship between fishing effort and landings.

Abstract

A small-scale oceanic eddy, which was generated in autumn 2011 at the headland of Cap-Vert off the coast of Senegal, West Africa, and then propagated westward into the open North Atlantic Ocean, is studied by multi-sensor satellite and surface drifter data. The eddy was generated after a sudden increase of the trade winds causing an enhanced southward flow and upwelling at the coast of Senegal. After this wind burst event, an extremely nonlinear cyclonic eddy with a radius of about 10 to 20 km evolved downstream of Cap-Vert with Rossby number larger than one. Our analysis suggests that the eddy was generated by flow separation at the headland of Cap-Vert. The eddy was tracked on its way into the open North Atlantic Ocean from satellites over 31 days via its sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a (CHL) signature and by a satellite-tracked surface drifter. The satellite images show that this small-scale eddy transported nutrients from the upwelling region westward into the oligotrophic North Atlantic thus giving rise to enhanced CHL concentration there. Maximum CHL concentration was encountered few days after vortex generation, which is consistent with a delayed plankton growth following nutrient supply into the euphotic zone within the eddy. Furthermore, the eddy was imaged by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard the Envisat satellite. It is shown that the radar signatures of cold eddies result from damping of short surface waves by biogenic surface films which arise from surface-active material secreted by the biota in the cold eddy as well as by the change of the stability of the air–sea interface. Abstract

The climatological seasonal cycle of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the north-eastern tropical Atlantic (7-25°N, 26-12°W) is studied using a mixed layer heat budget in a regional ocean general circulation model. The region, which experiences one of the larger SST cycle in the tropics, forms the main part of the Guinea Gyre. It is characterized by a seasonally varying open ocean and coastal upwelling system, driven by the movements of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). The model annual mean heat budget has two regimes schematically. South of roughly 12°N, advection of equatorial waters, mostly warm, and warming by vertical mixing, is balanced by net air-sea flux. In the rest of the domain, a cooling by vertical mixing, reinforced by advection at the coast, is balanced by the air-sea fluxes. Regarding the seasonal cycle, within a narrow continental band, in zonal mean, the SST early decrease (from September, depending on latitude, until December) is driven by upwelling dynamics off Senegal and Mauritania (15°-20°N), and instead by air-sea fluxes north and south of these latitudes. Paradoxically, the later peaks of upwelling intensity (from March to July, with increasing latitude) essentially damp the warming phase, driven by air-sea fluxes. The open ocean cycle to the west, is entirely driven by the seasonal net air-sea fluxes. The oceanic processes significantly oppose it, but for winter north of ~18°N. Vertical mixing in summer-autumn tends to cool (warm) the surface north (south) of the ITCZ, and advective cooling or warming by the geostrophic Guinea Gyre currents and the Ekman drift. This analysis supports previous findings on the importance of air-sea fluxes offshore. It mainly offers quantitative elements on the modulation of the SST seasonal cycle by the ocean circulation, and particularly by the upwelling dynamics. Abstract

International audience; The southern end of the Canary current system comprises of an original upwelling center that has so far received little attention, the Southern Senegal-Gambia Upwelling Center (SSUC). We investigate its dynamical functioning by taking advantage of favorable conditions in terms of limited cloud coverage. Analyses and careful examinations of over 1500 satellite images of sea surface temperature scenes contex-tualized with respect to wind conditions confirm the regularity and stability of the SSUC dynamical function-ing (as manifested by the recurrence and persistence of particular SST patterns). The analyses also reveal subtle aspects of its upwelling structure: shelf break cooling of surface waters consistent with internal tide breaking/mixing; complex interplay between local upwelling and the Mauritanian current off the Cape Verde headland; complexity of the inner-shelf/mid shelf frontal transition. The amplitude of the diurnal cycle suggests that large uncertainties exist in the SSUC heat budget. The studies limitations underscore the need for continuous in situ measurement in the SSUC, particularly of winds.

Abstract

The seasonal variability of Ethmalosa fimbriata abundance off Senegal Coastal Waters was investigated using an observation sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration from PATHFINDER and SeaWiFS satellites’ data of 1999-2009. The results showed that the variability of E. fimbriata landings in Senegalese waters is related to environmental changes. The seasonal fluctuations of E. fimbriata landings off Senegal Coastal Waters seemed to be governed by the combined effect of SST and Chl-a. However, SST better explains the seasonal variations of E. fimbriata landings than Chl-a, when they are used separately. A variabilidade sazonal da abundância de Ethmalosa fimbriata na Zona Costeira do Senegal foi investigada através da observação da temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) e da concentração de clorofila-a (Chl-a) a partir de dados dos anos de 1999-2009, provenientes dos satélites PATHFINDER e SeaWiFS. Os resultados observados mostraram que a variabilidade da pesca de E. fimbriata em águas senegalesas aparentemente está relacionada com as mudanças ambientais. As flutuações sazonais na pesca de E. fimbriata na Zona Costeira do Senegal parece ser controlada pelo efeito combinado da TSM e Chl-a. Porem, a TSM explica melhor as variações sazonais na pesca de E. fimbriata que a Chl-a, quando estas variáveis são utilizadas separadamente.

Abstract

The structure and patterns of variability of the southern Benguela coastal upwelling system are investigated with a high-resolution regional model forced by QuikSCAT winds over 1999-2003. The relevance of this global wind product is tested, at first, for the specific nearshore southeast Atlantic; then, the wind products are spatially or temporally degraded from the original 0.5 degrees daily fluxes and are used to diagnose the main scales of the surface dynamical forcing variability. Time resolution appears as a crucial factor in the wind stress to retrieve the patterns of interannual anomalies in sea surface temperatures in a good agreement with independent NASA Pathfinder observations. Various upwelling indices are also calculated in the model to study specific warm or cold coastal events whose circulation schemes are detailed from a Lagrangian interpretation of the model time-varying three-dimensional velocity field. Our study emphasizes the connections established between the Benguela upwelling and the large-scale circulation in relation with, for instance, the Agulhas Current retroflection and associated ring shedding.
