Abstract

The article presents a climatological assessment of the heavy rainfall and flooding that occurred from June-October 2012 in the Sahel, a land between the Sahara desert and the Savanna lands in the Gulf of Guinea region in West Africa. The recorded increased rainfall trend and floods were attributed to above-normal sea surface temperature (SST) in the northern tropical and sub-tropical Atlantic Ocean. An anomaly in the level of westerly jet across the eastern Atlantic warming was recorded.
