As a contribution to the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), the Bureau of Meteorology introduces new reprocessed Himawari-8 satellite-derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) products. The Radiative Transfer Model and a Bayesian cloud clearing method is used to retrieve SSTs every 10 min from the geostationary satellite Himawari-8. An empirical Sensor Specific Error Statistics (SSES) model, introduced herein, is applied to calculate bias and standard deviation for the retrieved SSTs. The SST retrieval and compositing method, along with validation results, are discussed. The monthly statistics for comparisons of Himawari-8 Level 2 Product (L2P) skin SST against in situ SST quality monitoring (iQuam) in situ SST datasets, adjusted for thermal stratification, showed a mean bias of −0.2/−0.1 K and a standard deviation of 0.4–0.7 K for daytime/night-time after bias correction, where satellite zenith angles were less than 60° and the quality level was greater than 2. For ease of use, these native resolution SST data have been composited using a method introduced herein that retains retrieved measurements, to hourly, 4-hourly and daily SST products, and projected onto the rectangular IMOS 0.02 degree grid. On average, 4-hourly products cover ≈ 10 % more of the IMOS domain, while one-night composites cover ≈ 25 % more of the IMOS domain than a typical 1 h composite. All available Himawari-8 data have been reprocessed for the September 2015–December 2022 period. The 10 min temporal resolution of the newly developed Himawari-8 SST data enables a daily composite with enhanced spatial coverage, effectively filling in SST gaps caused by transient clouds occlusion. Anticipated benefits of the new Himawari-8 products include enhanced data quality for applications like IMOS OceanCurrent and investigations into marine thermal stress, marine heatwaves, and ocean upwelling in near-coastal regions. Aim: To use a long‐term collection of bulk plankton samples to test the capacity of DNA metabarcoding to characterize the spatial and seasonal patterns found within a range of zooplankton communities, and investigate links with concurrent abiotic data collected as part of Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) programme. Location: Samples were sourced seasonally for 3 years from nine Pan‐Australian marine sites (n = 90). Methods: Here, we apply a multi‐assay metabarcoding approach to environmental DNA extracted from bulk plankton samples. Six assays (targeting 16SrRNA and COI genes) were used to target, amplify and sequence the zooplankton diversity found within each sample. The data generated from each assay were filtered and clustered into OTUs prior to analysis. Abiotic IMOS data collected contemporaneously enabled us to explore the physical and chemical drivers of community composition. Results: From over 25 million sequences, we identified in excess of 500 distinct taxa and detected clear spatial differences. We found that site and sea surface temperature are the most consistent predictors of differences between zooplankton communities. We detected endangered and invasive species such as the bryozoan Membranipora membranacea and the mollusc Maoricolpus roseus, and seasonal occurrences of species such as humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). We also estimated the number of samples required to detect any significant seasonal changes. For OTU richness, this was found to be assay dependent and for OTU assemblage, a minimum of nine samples per season would be required. Main Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the ability of DNA to capture and map zooplankton community changes in response to seasonal and spatial stressors and provide vital evidence to environmental stakeholders. We confirm that a metabarcoding method offers a practical opportunity for an ecosystem‐wide approach to long‐term biomonitoring and understanding marine biomes where morphological analysis is not feasible. Sea surface temperature (SST) products that can resolve fine scale features, such as sub-mesoscale eddies, ocean fronts and coastal upwelling, are increasingly in demand. In response to user requirements for gap-free, highest spatial resolution, best quality and highest accuracy SST data, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) produces operational, real-time Multi-sensor SST level 3 products by compositing SST from Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors on Meteorological Operational satellite (MetOp)-B and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 18, along with SST from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensors on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) and NOAA 20 polar-orbiting satellites for the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) project. Here we discuss our method to combine data from different sensors and present validation of the satellite-derived SST against in situ SST data. The Multi-sensor Level 3 Super Collated (L3S) SSTs exhibit significantly greater spatial coverage and improved accuracy compared with the pre-existing IMOS AVHRR-only L3S SSTs. When compared to the Geo Polar Blended level 4 analysis SST data over the Great Barrier Reef, Multi-sensor L3S SST differs by less than 1 ° C while exhibiting a wider range of SSTs over the region. It shows more variability and restores small-scale features better than the Geo Polar Blended level 4 analysis SST data. The operational Multi-sensor L3S SST products are used as input for applications such as IMOS OceanCurrent and the BoM ReefTemp Next-Generation Coral Bleaching Nowcasting service and provide useful insight into the study of marine heatwaves and ocean upwelling in near-coastal regions. Evaluating sea surface temperature (SST) products is essential before their application in marine environmental monitoring and related studies. SSTs from the in situ SST Quality Monitor (iQuam) system, Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) aboard the Global Change Observation Mission 1st-Water, and the Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI) aboard the Chinese Fengyun-3D satellite are intercompared utilizing extended triple collocation (ETC) and direct comparison methods. Additionally, error characteristic variations with respect to time, latitude, SST, sea surface wind speed, columnar water vapor, and columnar cloud liquid water are analyzed comprehensively. In contrast to the prevailing focus on SST validation accuracy, the random errors and the capability to detect SST variations are also evaluated in this study. The result of ETC analysis indicates that iQuam SST from ships exhibits the highest random error, above 0.83 °C, whereas tropical mooring SST displays the lowest random error, below 0.28 °C. SST measurements from drifters, tropical moorings, Argo floats, and high-resolution drifters, which possess random errors of less than 0.35 °C, are recommended for validating remotely sensed SST. The ability of iQuam, AMSR2, and MWRI to detect SST variations diminishes significantly in ocean areas between 0°N and 20°N latitude and latitudes greater than 50°N and 50°S. AMSR2 and iQuam demonstrate similar random errors and capabilities for detecting SST variations, whereas MWRI shows a high random error and weak capability. In comparison to iQuam SST, AMSR2 exhibits a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of about 0.51 °C with a bias of −0.05 °C, while MWRI shows an RMSE of about 1.26 °C with a bias of −0.14 °C. Ocean models must be regularly updated through the assimilation of observations (data assimilation) in order to correctly represent the timing and locations of eddies. Since initial conditions play an important role in the quality of short-term ocean forecasts, an effective data assimilation scheme to produce accurate state estimates is key to improving prediction. Western boundary current regions, such as the East Australia Current system, are highly variable regions, making them particularly challenging to model and predict. This study assesses the performance of two ocean data assimilation systems in the East Australian Current system over a 2-year period. We compare the time-dependent 4-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation system with the more computationally efficient, time-independent ensemble optimal interpolation (EnOI) system, across a common modelling and observational framework. Both systems assimilate the same observations: satellite-derived sea surface height, sea surface temperature, vertical profiles of temperature and salinity (from Argo floats), and temperature profiles from expendable bathythermographs. We analyse both systems' performance against independent data that are withheld, allowing a thorough analysis of system performance. The 4D-Var system is 25 times more expensive but outperforms the EnOI system against both assimilated and independent observations at the surface and subsurface. For forecast horizons of 5 d, root-mean-squared forecast errors are 20 %–60 % higher for the EnOI system compared to the 4D-Var system. The 4D-Var system, which assimilates observations over 5 d windows, provides a smoother transition from the end of the forecast to the subsequent analysis field. The EnOI system displays elevated low-frequency (>1 d) surface-intensified variability in temperature and elevated kinetic energy at length scales less than 100 km at the beginning of the forecast windows. The 4D-Var system displays elevated energy in the near-inertial range throughout the water column, with the wavenumber kinetic energy spectra remaining unchanged upon assimilation. Overall, this comparison shows quantitatively that the 4D-Var system results in improved predictability as the analysis provides a smoother and more dynamically balanced fit between the observations and the model's time-evolving flow. This advocates the use of advanced, time-dependent data assimilation methods, particularly for highly variable oceanic regions, and motivates future work into further improving data assimilation schemes. Eddy stirring at mesoscale oceanic fronts generates finescale filaments, visible in submesoscale-resolving model simulations and high-resolution satellite images of sea surface temperature, ocean color, and sea ice. Submesoscale filaments have widths of O(1–10) km and evolve on time scales of hours to days, making them extremely challenging to observe. Despite their relatively small scale, submesoscale processes play a key role in the climate system by providing a route to dissipation; altering the stratification of the ocean interior; and generating strong vertical velocities that exchange heat, carbon, nutrients, and oxygen between the mixed layer and the ocean interior. We present a unique set of in situ and satellite observations in a standing meander region of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) that supports the theory of cold filamentary intensification—revealing enhanced vertical velocities and evidence of subduction and ventilation associated with finescale cold filaments. We show that these processes are not confined to the mixed layer; EM-APEX floats reveal enhanced downward velocities (>100 m day−1) and evidence of ageostrophic motion extending as deep as 1600 dbar, associated with a ∼20-km-wide cold filament. A finer-scale (∼5 km wide) cold filament crossed by a towed Triaxus is associated with anomalous chlorophyll and oxygen values extending at least 100–200 dbar below the base of the mixed layer, implying recent subduction and ventilation. Energetic standing meanders within the weakly stratified ACC provide an environment conductive to the generation of finescale filaments that can transport water mass properties across mesoscale fronts and deep into the ocean interior. The intensity and frequency of extreme ocean temperature events, such as marine heatwaves (MHWs) and marine cold spells (MCSs), are expected to change as our oceans warm. Little is known about marine extremes in Australian coastal waters, particularly below the surface. Here we introduce a multi-decadal observational record of extreme ocean temperature events starting in the 1940s and 1950s between the surface and the bottom (50–100 m) at four long-term coastal sites around Australia: the Australian Multi-Decadal Ocean Time Series EXTreme (AMDOT-EXT) data products (10.26198/wbc7-8h24,). The data products include indices indicating the timing of extreme warm and cold temperature events, their intensity and the corresponding temperature time series and climatology thresholds. We include MHWs, MCSs and shorter-duration heat spikes and cold spikes. For MHWs and MCSs, which are defined as anomalies above the daily varying 90th and 10th percentiles, respectively, and lasting more than 5 d, we also provide further event information, such as their category and onset and decline rates. The four data products are provided as CF-compliant NetCDF files, and it is our intention that they be updated periodically. It is advised that data users seek the latest data product version. Using these multi-decadal data products, we show the most intense and longest extreme temperature events at these sites, which have occurred below the surface. Aquatic ectotherms often attain smaller body sizes at higher temperatures. By analysing ~15,000 coastal‐reef fish surveys across a 15°C spatial sea surface temperature (SST) gradient, we found that the mean length of fish in communities decreased by ~5% for each 1°C temperature increase across space, or 50% decrease in mean length from 14 to 29°C mean annual SST. Community mean body size change was driven by differential temperature responses within trophic groups and temperature‐driven change in their relative abundance. Herbivores, invertivores and planktivores became smaller on average in warmer temperatures, but no trend was found in piscivores. Nearly 25% of the temperature‐related community mean size trend was attributable to trophic composition at the warmest sites, but at colder temperatures, this was <1% due to trophic groups being similarly sized. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) cause disruption to marine ecosystems, deleteriously impacting macroflora and fauna. However, effects on microorganisms are relatively unknown despite ocean temperature being a major determinant of assemblage structure. Using data from thousands of Southern Hemisphere samples, we reveal that during an "unprecedented" 2015/16 Tasman Sea MHW, temperatures approached or surpassed the upper thermal boundary of many endemic taxa. Temperate microbial assemblages underwent a profound transition to niche states aligned with sites over 1000 km equatorward, adapting to higher temperatures and lower nutrient conditions bought on by the MHW. MHW conditions also modulate seasonal patterns of microbial diversity and support novel assemblage compositions. The most significant affects of MHWs on microbial assemblages occurred during warmer months, when temperatures exceeded the upper climatological bounds. Trends in microbial response across several MHWs in different locations suggest these are emergent properties of temperate ocean warming, which may facilitate monitoring, prediction and adaptation efforts. Long-term monitoring revealed that a prolonged marine heatwave drove a profound transition in pelagic microbial assemblages, altering seasonal patterns of diversity and shifting niche conditions to those observed over 1000 km equatorward. Identifying the species response to changing environments can contribute towards proactive and adaptable resource management and, although obtaining observations can be logistically challenging for aquatic species, can be postulated through monitoring.A network of acoustic tracking receivers (n = 93) across south‐eastern Australia was used to identify the effects of environmental conditions on the activity of the yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi, n = 63), an economically important species with a crucial role in pelagic ecosystems. Activity (measured via tri‐axial acceleration) provides an insight into the energetic expenditure of animals, which is linked to movement, behaviour, and physiological processes.Kingfish activity was strongly influenced by sea surface temperature and hour of day, with smaller effects from distance to nearest landmass and bathymetry. Activity also decreased during higher tides and periods of greater moon fraction. Findings show that the energetic responses of kingfish are sensitive to long‐ and short‐term changes, which can regulate behaviours and physiological processes. Changes in kingfish activity and movement (residency and space use) were further investigated at a seasonal aggregation in a small temperate estuary (approx. 120 km2; Coffin Bay, South Australia), where individuals remained during the austral spring and summer (September–April), with a complete exodus in winter. Fifty per cent of tagged fish returned to this estuary in three consecutive years, indicating its importance for aggregating kingfish.While residing in Coffin Bay, kingfish activity varied between interconnected areas, with temperature, hour of day, tide height, and moon fraction again identified as important explanatory variables. These findings have implications for the energetic budgets of large pelagic fish in subtropical and temperate regions, which are facing rapidly changing climates.These results are important for understanding and accounting for the potential responses and physiological impacts of future climatic conditions on migratory pelagic species. The cyanobacterium Trichodesmium is responsible for approximately half of the ocean's nitrogen input through nitrogen fixation. Although it was first recorded near Australia in the 18th century, the knowledge of where and when large quantity of Trichodesmium around Australia could be found is still lacking. Here, using multi‐band satellite imagery acquired between 2012 and 2021, we fill this knowledge gap through the use of deep learning, designed to recognize both the spectral shapes of individual pixels and spatial morphology of surface aggregations (scums) of Trichodesmium. Trichodesmium scums were found nearly everywhere around Australia, with a cumulative footprint (i.e., where the 10‐year average density is >0.001‰) exceeding 4.6 million km2. Strong seasonality was found, with peak months between September and November. Furthermore, temperature, iron‐rich dust and black carbon aerosols, with the latter being a result of frequent bushfires, play major roles in determining the spatial distributions and seasonality of Trichodesmium. Plain Language Summary: Responsible for half of the ocean's nitrogen input through nitrogen fixation, the saltwater cyanobacterium Trichodesmium is ubiquitous in global tropical and subtropical oceans but particularly abundant around Australia. Based on satellite imagery and deep learning, we quantified relative abundance of Trichodesmium around Australia for the period of 2012–2021. Pearl perch (Glaucosoma scapulare) are endemic to the east coast of Australia and have a long history of exploitation. Recent stock assessments indicate that the current rate of fishing mortality is unsustainable in the long term. To better inform the management of the pearl perch stock and to address gaps in our understanding of their reproductive biology, we investigated patterns in gonad development and estimated length- and age-at-maturity and batch fecundity from females collected from southern and central Queensland waters between 2018 and 2022. The mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) varied both temporally and spatially, with maxima in the austral autumn in southern Queensland and in summer in central Queensland, coinciding with sea surface temperatures between 25.26 and 26.32°C. The length- and age-at-maturity of females were 353 mm (fork length, FL) and 4.42 years, respectively, and batch fecundity (B) was correlated to FL such that Ln(B) = 2.45 × Ln(FL) + 3.90. Using an advanced trend detection method, we find accelerating warming trends at multiple depths in the EAC extension region at 34.1 and 42.6 ∘ S. We see accelerating trends at the surface and bottom at 34.1 ∘ S but similar trends in the top 20 m at 42.6 ∘ S. We compare several methods, estimate uncertainty, and place our results in the context of previously reported trends, highlighting that magnitudes are depth-dependent, vary across latitude, and are sensitive to the data time period chosen. The spatial and temporal variability in the long-term temperature trends highlight the important role of regional dynamics against a background of broad-scale ocean warming. Moreover, considering that recent studies of ocean warming typically focus on surface data only, our results show the necessity of subsurface data for the improved understanding of regional climate change impacts. This study has evaluated five years (2016–2020) of Himawari-8 (H8) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Level 2 Pre-processed (L2P) data produced by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau) against shipborne radiometer SST measurements obtained from the Infrared SST Autonomous Radiometer (ISAR) onboard research vessel RV Investigator. Before being used, all data sets employed in this study have gone through careful quality control, and only the most trustworthy measurements are retained. With a large matchup database (31,871 collocations in total, including 16,418 during daytime and 15,453 during night-time), it is found that the Bureau H8 SST product is of good quality, with a mean bias ± standard deviation (SD) of −0.12 °C ± 0.47 °C for the daytime and −0.04 °C ± 0.37 °C for the night-time. The performance of the H8 data under different environmental conditions, determined by the observations obtained concurrently from RV Investigator, is examined. Daytime and night-time satellite data behave slightly differently. During the daytime, a cold bias can be seen under almost all environmental conditions, including for most values of wind speed, SST, and relative humidity. On the other hand, the performance of the night-time H8 SST product is consistently more stable under most meteorological conditions with the mean bias usually close to zero. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface waves perform a crucial role in modulating tropical cyclone (TC) systems and have proved to be key for numerical TC predictions. In this study, we investigate the effects of wave-induced mixing and wave-affected surface exchange coefficients using a coupled ocean–atmosphere–wave model for two real TC cases: Shanshan (2018) and Megi (2010). The results demonstrate that wave-affected surface exchange coefficients enhance air–sea heat fluxes and have a significantly positive effect on simulated TC intensity, size, and strengthening process. In contrast, the wave-induced mixing has a negative impact on TC intensity and size and is not conducive to TC intensification and maintenance. The net effect of these two factors is a balance between the wave-affected positive contribution and the negative contribution from wave-induced sea surface temperature cooling. We find that the effect of wave-induced mixing on a TC system depends on the local thermal structure of the ocean. When the thermocline is weak and there is warm water at the wave-induced mixing penetration depth, the negative effect of the wave-induced mixing is weak. However, when there is cold subsurface water and a strong thermocline, wave-induced mixing has a significant impact, which exceeds the wave-driven positive feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The years since 2000 have been a golden age in in situ ocean observing with the proliferation and organization of autonomous platforms such as surface drogued buoys and subsurface Argo profiling floats augmenting ship-based observations. Global time series of mean sea surface temperature and ocean heat content are routinely calculated based on data from these platforms, enhancing our understanding of the ocean's role in Earth's climate system. Individual measurements of meteorological, sea surface, and subsurface variables directly improve our understanding of the Earth system, weather forecasting, and climate projections. They also provide the data necessary for validating and calibrating satellite observations. Maintaining this ocean observing system has been a technological, logistical, and funding challenge. The global COVID-19 pandemic, which took hold in 2020, added strain to the maintenance of the observing system. A survey of the contributing components of the observing system illustrates the impacts of the pandemic from January 2020 through December 2021. The pandemic did not reduce the short-term geographic coverage (days to months) capabilities mainly due to the continuation of autonomous platform observations. In contrast, the pandemic caused critical loss to longer-term (years to decades) observations, greatly impairing the monitoring of such crucial variables as ocean carbon and the state of the deep ocean. So, while the observing system has held under the stress of the pandemic, work must be done to restore the interrupted replenishment of the autonomous components and plan for more resilient methods to support components of the system that rely on cruise-based measurements. Dropsonde-based sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, and buoyancy flux were estimated over the sea around the Korean Peninsula in 2021. During a preceding severe weather (SW) mission, a total of 243 dropsondes were released from a National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS) Atmospheric Research Aircraft (NARA). The heat fluxes were indirectly validated by comparison with model-based heat fluxes. The sensible heat flux calculated by the bulk transfer method depended entirely on the temperature difference between the sea level and atmosphere, whereas the latent heat flux was mainly affected by wind speed. Boundary layer heights above 800 m are closely related to buoyancy flux, which is greater in regions with higher sea surface temperatures. Furthermore, the utility of the dropsonde was confirmed in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) growth, which is difficult to observe in situ and, a relationship was proposed for estimating MABL based on mean meteorological data over the sea level. The East Australian Current (EAC) is a highly dynamic western boundary current of the South Pacific Gyre. The EAC frequently encroaches shoreward, drives upwelling, changes coastal bio-physical dynamics, and thus exerts significant impacts on coastal marine ecosystems. In this study, with high frequency (HF) radar and mooring data, for the first time accurate daily mapping and tracking of a rapid EAC intrusion event was conducted and the impacts of the EAC intrusion on the shelf water off Coffs Harbor were monitored. The results show that, during the event, the EAC was highly dynamic with a mean daily onshore/offshore movement of ~5 km/day. In addition, we found that the bottom ocean temperature and the surface current speed on the shelf varied linearly with the EAC-to-coast distance. This study thus demonstrates the value of HF remotely sensed data for the ongoing quantitative monitoring of the highly dynamic EAC fluctuations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using data from Argo floats, satellite altimetry, and satellite sea surface temperature (SST), we investigate the merging of two anti‐cyclonic eddies in the Tasman Sea. The eddies are of different size and different density. Once the distance between the eddies falls below a critical separation distance, water from the smaller, denser eddy is observed to flow around the larger, lighter eddy, sink to greater than 400 m depth, and slowly spiral toward the eddy‐center. The merging event is characterized by filaments around the eddy perimeter, evident in high‐resolution, satellite SST data. The merged eddy develops multiple well‐mixed layers, each almost 400 m thick, with large anomalies in temperature and salinity that penetrate to about 1,000 m depth. After the merging is complete, water from the lighter eddy is stacked on top of water from the denser eddy. Using a simple conceptual model, we show that the merged profiles can be simply explained by subduction of surface waters from the denser eddy, and mixing with subsurface waters from the lighter eddy. The stacked eddy has a distinct signature in TS‐space. Using this TS‐signature, together with altimetry for context, we identify over 20 other examples when Argo floats sample stacked eddies in the Tasman Sea. We speculate that merged eddies may be more common than previously thought, with implications for ocean productivity, underwater acoustics, and the transfer of energy across scales. In this study, we report observations from Argo floats that sample two nearby eddies as they join together. As they merge together, water from the smaller, denser eddy wraps around the larger, lighter eddy, and spirals downwards towards the eddy center. The resulting eddy has a distinct subsurface profile that resembles the light eddy stacked on top of the dense eddy. Having identified the key signature of these stacked eddies, we hunt for more, and find plenty. We think these stacked eddies are quite common, and may be important for many applications. Aim: Temperate marine systems globally are warming at accelerating rates, facilitating the poleward movement of warm‐water species, which are tropicalizing higher‐latitude reefs. While temperature plays a key role in structuring species distributions, less is known about how species' early life stages are responding to warming‐induced changes in preferred nursery habitat availability. We aim to identify key ecological and environmental drivers of juvenile reef fishes' distributions in the context of ocean warming. Location: South‐eastern Australian coastline from 30 to 37°S. Methods: We used a decade of underwater visual census data to uncover latitudinal distribution patterns of juvenile reef fishes and habitats across 1000 km of coastline, from subtropical to temperate latitudes. We modelled how benthic habitat cover, depth, wave exposure and sea surface temperature influence distributions of warm‐water and cool‐water juvenile reef fishes on temperate rocky reefs. Results: We found sea surface temperature was typically the most important factor influencing densities of juvenile fishes, regardless of species' thermal affinity or latitudinal range extent. Juveniles of tropical and subtropical range‐expanding fishes responded more strongly to warmer temperatures and lower wave exposure, while juveniles of temperate species responded more strongly to benthic habitats. Species' responses to greater availability of temperate reef habitat‐formers such as kelp and other macroalgae contrasted, being positive for temperate and negative for tropical and subtropical juvenile fishes. Main conclusions: The availability of both suitable habitat and sea temperatures for species' early life stages is important considerations when predicting changes in reef fishes' distributions in the context of ocean warming. Warming‐induced isotherm shifts and feedback loops constraining the persistence of key temperate reef habitat‐formers will favour range‐expanding tropical reef fishes colonizing higher‐latitude reefs, while disadvantaging some macroalgal‐associated resident temperate species. Abstract: We define the footprint of an ocean observation as the region that is well correlated to the observed variable at zero time-lag. The footprint of observations from an observation array provides an indication of the region that is effectively monitored by that array. This study examines the footprint of moorings that underpin the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). Based on sea-surface height, temperature, and velocity from a 17-year model run, we quantify the footprint of existing moorings to identify the extent to which the shelf circulation is likely to be represented by those moorings. We find that in combination, the nine long-term National Reference Stations (NRSs) effectively monitor, with a correlation of >0.8, the interannual (intraseasonal) variability of the shelf circulation in about 80% (30%) of the region around Australia. The 28 additional IMOS moorings expand the combined footprint for intraseasonal variability to cover up to 70%. We identify several gaps in the observing system that could be filled by additional observations, including the regions off the east coast, the central Great Barrier Reef, the Great Australian Bight, parts of the north–west shelf, and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Multi-decadal ocean time-series are fundamental baselines for assessing the impacts of environmental change, however, compiling and quality controlling historic data from multiple sources remains challenging. Here we aggregate, document, and release a number of long time-series temperature products and climatologies compiled from data obtained at 4 monitoring sites around Australia where sub-surface ocean temperature has been recorded nominally weekly to monthly since the 1940s/50s. In recent years, the sampling was augmented with data obtained from moored sensors, vertical profiles and satellite-derived data. The temperature data have been quality controlled, and combined using a rigorously tested methodology. We have packaged the multi-decadal, multi-depth, multi-platform temperature time-series at each site and produced a range of daily temperature climatologies from different data combinations and time periods. The 17 data products are provided as CF-compliant NetCDF files and will be updated periodically. The long-term temperature time-series will be useful for studies of ocean temperature variability, trends, anomalies and change. Sea surface temperature (SST) climatology data sets provide the reference for observations of ocean anomalous events, which may have significant effects on the local marine ecosystem. The representativeness of the SST climatologies of the historical and current ocean surface states is essential to identify and predict anomalous events. Here, we compare five high‐resolution SST climatology data sets around the Australian coast to investigate the uncertainty introduced by the reference SSTs to current estimates of SST anomalies. The data sets studied are (a) 0.05° global daily climatology calculated by this study from the ESA SST Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Analysis v2.0 product (1981–2016); (b) 0.25° global daily climatology for 1981–2016 derived from the NCEI daily AVHRR_OI SST; (c) 0.02° SST Atlas of the Australian Regional Seas (SSTAARS), a pixel‐wise daily climatology for 1992–2016; (d) 0.05° NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) global monthly climatology for 1985–2012; and (e) 0.1° global daily climatology for 1994–2016 derived from the BRAN_2016 ocean reanalysis. The climatology data sets formed from SST CCI analysis v2.0 data are used as the reference to compare data sets (b)–(e) based on the same reference time period and central year. This study indicates that climatologies (a) and (e) would be suitable for use as a reference over the Australian region. However, for smaller spatial scales or where a night‐only SST climatology is required, the 2‐km daily SSTAARS would also be suitable. The feature resolution of the climatology data sets (a) and (e) is significantly coarser than SSTAARS climatology. The marine impacts of climate change on our societies will be largely felt through coastal waters and shelf seas. These impacts involve sectors as diverse as tourism, fisheries and energy production. Projections of future marine climate change come from global models. Modelling at the global scale is required to capture the feedbacks and large-scale transport of physical properties such as heat, which occur within the climate system, but global models currently cannot provide detail in the shelf seas. Version 2 of the regional implementation of the Shelf Sea Physics and Primary Production (S2P3-R v2.0) model bridges the gap between global projections and local shelf-sea impacts. S2P3-R v2.0 is a highly simplified coastal shelf model, computationally efficient enough to be run across the shelf seas of the whole globe. Despite the simplified nature of the model, it can display regional skill comparable to state-of-the-art models, and at the scale of the global (excluding high latitudes) shelf seas it can explain >50 % of the interannual sea surface temperature (SST) variability in ∼60 % of grid cells and >80 % of interannual variability in ∼20 % of grid cells. The model can be run at any resolution for which the input data can be supplied, without expert technical knowledge, and using a modest off-the-shelf computer. The accessibility of S2P3-R v2.0 places it within reach of an array of coastal managers and policy makers, allowing it to be run routinely once set up and evaluated for a region under expert guidance. The computational efficiency and relative scientific simplicity of the tool make it ideally suited to educational applications. S2P3-R v2.0 is set up to be driven directly with output from reanalysis products or daily atmospheric output from climate models such as those which contribute to the sixth phase of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project, making it a valuable tool for semi-dynamical downscaling of climate projections. The updates introduced into version 2.0 of this model are primarily focused around the ability to geographical relocate the model, model usability and speed but also scientific improvements. The value of this model comes from its computational efficiency, which necessitates simplicity. In situ sea surface temperature (SST) measurements play a critical role in the calibration/validation (Cal/Val) of satellite SST retrievals and ocean data assimilation. However, their quality is not always optimal, and proper quality control (QC) is required before they can be used with confidence. The in situ SST Quality Monitor (iQuam) system was established at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2009, initially to support the Cal/Val of NOAA satellite SST products. It collects in situ SST data from multiple sources, performs uniform QC, monitors the QCed data online, and distributes them to users. In this study, the iQuam QC is compared with other QC methods available in some of the in situ data ingested in iQuam. Overall, the iQuam QC performs well on daily to monthly time scales over most global oceans and under a wide variety of environmental conditions. However, it may be less accurate in the daytime, when a pronounced diurnal cycle is present, and in dynamic regions, because of the strong reliance on the "reference SST check," which employs daily low-resolution level-4 analyses with no diurnal cycle resolved. The iQuam "performance history check," applied to all in situ platforms, is an effective alternative to the customary "black/gray" lists, available only for some platforms (e.g., drifters and Argo floats). In the future, iQuam QC will be upgraded [e.g., using improved reference field(s), with enhanced temporal and spatial resolutions]. Global patterns of plant biomass drive the distribution of much of the marine and terrestrial life on Earth. This is because their biomass and physical structure have important consequences for the communities they support by providing food and habitat. In terrestrial ecosystems, temperature is one of the major determinants of plant biomass and can influence plant and leaf morphology. In temperate marine systems, macroalgae are major habitat‐formers and commonly display highly variable morphology in response to local environmental conditions. Variation in their morphology, and thus habitat structure on temperate reefs, however, is poorly understood across large scales. In this study, we used a trait‐based approach to quantify morphological variability in subtidal rocky reefs dominated by the algal genus Sargassum along a latitudinal gradient, in southeastern Australia (~900 km). We tested whether large‐scale variation in sea surface temperature (SST), site exposure, and nutrient availability can predict algal biomass and individual morphology. We found Sargassum biomass declined with increasing maximum SST. We also found that individual morphology varied with abiotic ocean variables. Frond size and intraindividual variability in frond size decreased with increasing with distance from the equator, as SST decreased and nitrate concentration increased. The shape of fronds displayed no clear relationship with any of the abiotic variables measured. These results suggest climate change will cause significant changes to the structure of Sargassum habitats along the southeastern coast of Australia, resulting in an overall reduction in biomass and increase in the prevalence of thalli with large, highly variable fronds. Using a space‐for‐time approach means shifts in morphological trait values can be used as early warning signs of impending species declines and regime shifts. Sea surface temperature (SST) perturbations modify low‐level winds through the influence of air‐sea heat flux across the marine atmospheric boundary layer, mostly observable in the major western boundary current systems. In this study, we investigate the effects of SST on surface winds in a poleward‐flowing eastern boundary current system, the Leeuwin Current (LC), using the Advanced Very High‐Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) SST and wind data from Cross‐Calibrated Multi‐Platform (CCMP) during 2009–2018. There exist robust linear relationships between perturbation SST and perturbation wind speed and their derivatives in the LC. The regression slopes between SST perturbations and wind perturbations appear to be higher in austral summer when the alongshore northward winds are strongly opposing the LC, however, the relationships in winter are statistically more robust when the LC and associated cross‐shore SST fronts are the strongest. Consistent with previous studies in the western boundary currents, crosswind perturbation wind speed gradient is the largest for the winds 80° (−100°) to the right (left) of the SST gradient in the LC region. The perturbation wind stress curl induced by the SST signature of the LC causes positive wind stress curl anomalies on the offshore edge of the LC, driving anomalous downwelling and would reduce surface chlorophyll a concentrations along the LC SST front as observed in satellite data, which may have implications in regional biogeochemistry. Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity, and indirectly impacting coral reef fisheries through bleaching‐induced degradation of live coral habitats. Marine heatwaves also affect fish metabolism and catchability, but such direct effects of elevated temperatures on reef fisheries are largely unknown. We investigated direct and indirect effects of the devastating 2016 marine heatwave on the largest reef fishery operating along the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). We used a combination of fishery‐independent underwater census data on coral trout biomass (Plectropomus and Variola spp.) and catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) data from the commercial fishery to evaluate changes in the fishery resulting from the 2016 heatwave. The heatwave caused widespread, yet locally patchy, declines in coral cover, but we observed little effect of local coral loss on coral trout biomass. Instead, a pattern of decreasing biomass at northern sites and stable or increasing biomass at southern sites suggested a direct response of populations to the heatwave. Analysis of the fishery‐independent data and CPUE found that in‐water coral trout biomass estimates were positively related to CPUE, and that coral trout catch rates increased with warmer temperatures. Temperature effects on catch rates were consistent with the thermal affinities of the multiple species contributing to this fishery. Scaling‐up the effect of temperature on coral trout catch rates across the region suggests that GBR‐wide catches were 18% higher for a given level of effort during the heatwave year relative to catch rates under the mean temperatures in the preceding 6 years. These results highlight a potentially large effect of heatwaves on catch rates of reef fishes, independent of changes in reef habitats, that can add substantial uncertainty to estimates of stock trends inferred from fishery‐dependent (CPUE) data. The 2012/2013 Ningaloo Niño induced a strong marine heatwave (MHW) event on Australia's North West Shelf (NWS) during the austral summer, starting in December 2012 and peaking in January and February 2013. A high‐resolution regional numerical model based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) was implemented to simulate the variability of the upper ocean temperature and ocean circulation and understand the mechanisms that drive the evolution of the MHW. An upper ocean heat budget was used to quantify the roles of air‐sea heat flux and ocean circulation in the development of extreme temperature anomalies over the continental shelf. Results indicate that during December 2012 an increase of net air‐sea heat flux combined with positive horizontal advective heat flux anomaly led to development of the MHW. During the peak in January‐February 2013 high‐temperature anomalies were maintained by a combination of a decrease in negative heat advection and vertical mixing cooling and a decrease in net air‐sea flux warming. The delayed onset of the 2012–2013 Australian monsoon resulted in alongshore wind anomalies on the NWS which in turn caused the advection and mixing anomalies. Western boundary currents (WBCs) have intensified and become more eddying in recent decades due to the spin‐up of the ocean gyres, resulting in warmer open ocean temperatures. However, relatively little is known of how WBC intensification will affect temperatures in adjacent continental shelf waters where societal impact is greatest. We use the well‐observed East Australian Current (EAC) to investigate WBC warming impacts on shelf waters and show that temperature increases are nonuniform in shelf waters along the latitudinal extent of the EAC. Shelf waters poleward of 32°S are warming more than twice as fast as those equatorward of 32°S. We show that nonuniform shelf temperature trends are driven by an increase in lateral heat advection poleward of the WBC separation, along Australia's most populous coastline. The large‐scale nature of the process indicates that this is applicable to WBCs broadly, with far‐reaching biological implications. Plain Language Summary: As the circulation in ocean basins intensifies, it causes changes in the currents on their western boundaries which carries heat toward the poles. While we know that this causes warming in the open ocean, knowledge of how these changes affect coastal and shelf regions is limited. Here, we use a suite of different observations and an ocean model to show that, off the coast of southeastern Australia, the coastal ocean is warming two or three times faster in areas poleward of where the East Australian Current separates from the coast than where the East Australia Current remains close to the coast. This is due to the shelf waters poleward of where the current separates from the coast receiving an increase in the amount of warm water being pushed onto them as the southern outflow of the East Australia Current becomes more turbulent and eddying. This warming is driven by large‐scale changes in wind patterns, and so is likely to be common to other similar current systems. As coastal ecosystems are the most productive, we expect this nonuniform warming to have a widespread biological impact. Pelagic biofoulers such as barnacles or bryozoans settle and raft on natural debris like pumice or seeds. Recent influxes of marine debris into the world's oceans, especially plastic, have increased habitat availability for these biofoulers. Goose barnacles in the genus Lepas are some of the most common biofouling taxa globally, and play an important role in biofouling communities as foundation species. We examined community succession, growth rates and isotopic composition in Lepas and their associated biofouling communities in coastal waters of eastern Australia. Community succession on a fixed surface mooring showed an increase in species diversity over 25 weeks. Using the abundances of L. anserifera, L. anatifera, and the amphipods Caprella danilevskii and Jassa slatteryi, we created an equation to estimate minimum duration at sea. Predators such as the polychaete Amphinome rostrata may influence the biofouling community, as can beach scavengers once floating debris is cast ashore. We report a new maximum growth rate for L. anserifera of 1.45 mm−1, and our study is the first to report growth rates for any species of Lepas faster than 1 mm day−1. Lepas were larger on moored floats than on smaller, free-floating drifters. δ18O content of Lepas shells was a robust predictor of sea surface temperatures during formation for L. anatifera and L. anserifera. Despite playing a major role in global ocean heat storage, the Southern Ocean remains the most sparsely measured region of the global ocean. Here, a unique 25-year temperature time-series of the upper 800 m, repeated several times a year across the Southern Ocean, allows us to document the long-term change within water-masses and how it compares to the interannual variability. Three regions stand out as having strong trends that dominate over interannual variability: warming of the subantarctic waters (0.29 ± 0.09 °C per decade); cooling of the near-surface subpolar waters (−0.07 ± 0.04 °C per decade); and warming of the subsurface subpolar deep waters (0.04 ± 0.01 °C per decade). Although this subsurface warming of subpolar deep waters is small, it is the most robust long-term trend of our section, being in a region with weak interannual variability. This robust warming is associated with a large shoaling of the maximum temperature core in the subpolar deep water (39 ± 09 m per decade), which has been significantly underestimated by a factor of 3 to 10 in past studies. We find temperature changes of comparable magnitude to those reported in Amundsen–Bellingshausen Seas, which calls for a reconsideration of current ocean changes with important consequences for our understanding of future Antarctic ice-sheet mass loss. The Southern Ocean takes up the most heat and carbon, yet because of its remote and harsh location, it remains relatively sparsely measured. Accurate forecasting of ocean currents in dynamic regions remains a critical challenge due to the sparsity of observations in global ocean observing networks and the limited resolution of present‐day regional ocean models. Lately, traditional observing platforms have been complemented by newly available data streams capable of sampling at higher spatial and/or temporal resolutions in dynamically significant regions in near‐real time. However, the relative merits and trade‐offs of incorporating these "nontraditional" observations into ocean state estimates have not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we perform a detailed statistical and dynamical comparison of two high‐resolution reanalysis products assimilating different combinations of traditional and nontraditional observations in the East Australian Current (EAC) system, a vigorous western boundary current. We show that sea‐surface height and temperature are well‐constrained by satellite measurements; however, below the surface, a reanalysis incorporating fully available observations better represents the ocean state. The core of the EAC jet is effectively constrained by subsurface observations from deep water moorings upstream of jet separation, while radar‐derived nearshore surface velocities in the separation zone are found to resolve the submesoscale cyclonic band inshore of the EAC. Cost function sensitivity analysis of both products reveals excessive model adjustment at depth causing the reanalyzes to overestimate alongshore transport relative to a 22‐year freely evolving simulation. Overall, the assimilation of nontraditional observations delivers marked improvement in representing dynamical features of the EAC. However, this improvement is not as pronounced in the model forecast due to the introduction of nonphysical dynamics or forcing, suggesting that other improvements such as increased model resolution are required. One of the largest tropical tidal ranges in the world occurs in King Sound, a semienclosed embayment in the tropical Kimberley region of Western Australia. Incubations of phytoplankton within King Sound displayed reduced photosynthetic efficiency, elevated maximum photosynthetic rates, and no measurable photoinhibition. A response typical of high light adapted phytoplankton despite decreased water clarity and low ambient nutrient concentrations in the estuary. This is in contrast with the adjacent shelf where phytoplankton, associated with a deep chlorophyll maximum, display high photosynthetic efficiency and strong light inhibition typical of low light adaptation. Remote sensing and numerical modeling suggest that spatial and temporal variations in tidal mixing drive changes in light variability and in photoacclimation. In King Sound phytoplankton experience the largest variations in light over short time scales where diatoms dominate since they can rapidly acclimate to water column light conditions by adjusting pigment within the cell. The photophysiological response of the phytoplankton in the Sound suggests that acclimation to alternate weak and strong mixing exposes them to cyclical changes in light intensity delaying the onset of photoinhibition, allowing higher maximum photosynthetic rates to be attained. These findings highlight the importance of a multifaceted approach to understanding the links between physics and photoacclimation strategies employed by phytoplankton to more accurately determine rates of depth‐integrated productivity in complex coastal areas. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) north of Australia in the Indonesian-Australian Basin are significantly influenced by Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), an eastward-moving atmospheric disturbance that traverses the globe in the tropics. The region also has large-amplitude diurnal SST variations, which may influence the air-sea heat and moisture fluxes, that provide feedback to the MJO evolution. During the 2018/19 austral summer, a field campaign aiming to better understand the influences of air-sea coupling on the MJO was conducted north of Australia in the Indonesian-Australian Basin. Surface meteorology from buoy observations and upper-ocean data from autonomous fast-profiling float observations were collected. Two MJO convective phases propagated eastward across the region in mid-December 2018 and late January 2019 and the second MJO was in conjunction with a tropical cyclone development. Observations showed that SST in the region was rather sensitive to the MJO forcing. Air-sea heat fluxes warmed the SST throughout the 2018/19 austral summer, punctuated by the MJO activities, with a 2°-3°C drop in SST during the two MJO events. Substantial diurnal SST variations during the suppressed phases of the MJOs were observed, and the near-surface thermal stratifications provided positive feedback for the peak diurnal SST amplitude, which may be a mechanism to influence the MJO evolution. Compared to traditionally vessel-based observation programs, we have relied on fast-profiling floats as the main vehicle in measuring the upper-ocean variability from diurnal to the MJO time scales, which may pave the way for using cost-effective technology in similar process studies. Rising ocean temperatures and extreme temperature events have precipitated declines and local extinctions in many marine species globally, but patterns of loss are often uneven across species ranges for reasons that are poorly understood. Knowledge of the extent of local adaptation and gene flow may explain such patterns and help predict future trajectories under scenarios of climate change. We test the extent to which local differentiation in thermal tolerance is influenced by gene flow and local adaptation using a widely distributed intertidal seaweed (Hormosira banksii) from temperate Australia. Population surveys across ~2,000 km of the species range revealed strong genetic structuring at regional and local scales (global FST = 0.243) reflecting extremely limited gene flow, while common garden experiments (14‐day exposures to 15, 18, 21°C) revealed strong site differences in early development and mortality in response to elevated temperature. Embryos from many sites spanning a longitudinal thermal gradient showed suppressed development and increased mortality to elevated water temperatures, but populations originating from warmer and more variable thermal environments tended to be less susceptible to warming. Notably, there was significant local‐scale variation in the thermal responses of embryos within regions which was corroborated by the finding of small‐scale genetic differences. We expect the observed genetic and phenotypic differentiation to lead to uneven responses to warming sea surface temperatures in this important marine foundation species. The study highlights the challenges of predicting species responses to thermal stress and the importance of management strategies that incorporate evolutionary potential for "climate‐proofing" marine ecosystems. The nighttime ocean cool skin signal ΔT [defined as skin sea surface temperature (SSTskin) minus depth SST (SSTdepth)] is investigated using 103 days of matchups between shipborne Infrared SST Autonomous Radiometer (ISAR) SSTskin and water intake SSTdepth at ~7.1–9.9-m depths, in oceans around Australia. Before data analysis, strict quality control of ISAR SSTskin data is conducted and possible diurnal warming contamination is carefully minimized. The statistical distribution of ΔT, and its dependencies on wind speed, heat flux, etc., are consistent with previous findings. The overall average ΔT value is −0.23 K. It is observed that the magnitude of the cool skin signal increases after midnight and a coolest skin offset (with an average value of −0.36 K) is found at around dawn. The dependency of ΔT on SST conditions is observed. Direct warm skin events are discovered when the net heat flux direction is from the atmosphere to the ocean, which is more likely to occur at high latitudes when the air is very humid and warmer than the SST. In addition, several cool skin models are validated: one widely used physical model performs best and can capture most skin-effect trends and details; the empirical models only reflect the basic features of the observed ΔT values. If the user cannot apply the physical model (due to, e.g., the algorithm complexity or missing inputs), then the empirical parameterization in the form proposed in a 2002 study can be used. Diurnal variations of sea surface temperature (DV SST) can affect the heat and moisture fluxes at the air‐sea interface during the suppressed phase of the MJO, thereby conditioning a favorable atmosphere environment for the subsequent MJO active phase. In order to better understand the causes and impacts of DV SST, and the modeling requirements for faithfully simulating these processes, we explore the DV SST and their influences on the air‐sea fluxes during the suppressed phases of three MJO events using a global coupled model, ACCESS‐S1, which has a 1‐m vertical resolution near the ocean surface and coupling frequency of 1 hr. Compared with the MTSAT‐1R satellite SST measurements, ACCESS‐S1 is able to simulate the magnitude of the DV SST reliably but has a phase delay in simulated peak SST of ~3 hr. Imposing an instant vertical mixing in the upper 10 m in ACCESS‐S1 would suppress the DV SST by >1°K and decrease the peak (>30 W m−2) and daily averaged latent heat flux. On the other hand, changing the atmosphere‐ocean coupling frequency within several hours mostly affects the DV SST phase instead of magnitude. Extreme DV SST (>1°K) occurs only when ocean mixing layer depth = 1 m. It implies that vertical resolution of ≤1 m near the sea surface is important for the coupled models to simulate both the magnitude and phase of DV SST accurately and thereby the air‐sea heat fluxes in future model forecast of the MJO. The fundamental role of the micronutrient Fe in controlling phytoplankton growth in large parts of Earth's oceans and a lack of information on seasonal transitions in remote regions motivated us to create an autonomous water sampler capable of collecting uncontaminated open‐ocean seawater samples with monthly resolution over a full annual cycle. Phytoplankton are at the base of the food chain, which take up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Assessing Fe availability is essential to understanding both ocean productivity and our climate. This need is particularly important in the Southern Ocean, where Fe limitation is wide spread and access is difficult especially in winter. To address this need, we have developed an autonomous system capable of observing iron concentrations over a full seasonal cycle, at the subnanomolar concentrations that are important in the open ocean. The automated clean environmental sampler has been developed initially for 1‐yr deployments on oceanographic moorings. Twelve samples per unit can be programmed to collect 65 mL of seawater through a noncontaminating, primarily Teflon sample path. The system is vaned to maintain its intake tubes in upstream water and has been tested to 100 m depth. The system was deployed during a GEOTRACES section (SR3 line, GS01) in 2018 alongside an industry standard, trace metal clean rosette, and no significant difference was found in Fe concentrations in the 50 pmol L–1 range, proving its capability at collecting uncontaminated seawater samples in the open ocean at temperatures above 0°C. Submarine canyons play an important role in the regional distribution, abundance and dispersal of marine biota and are increasingly being recognised as geomorphic features of high conservation significance along Australia's continental margin. Certain canyons have been described as foraging 'hotspots' attributable to the high abundance of apex cetacean species aggregating in these areas. Anecdotal evidence of large seasonal aggregations of killer whales in the Bremer Canyon, south-west Australia, has attracted significant research attention in the last decade. To identify important environmental drivers influencing aggregation patterns, a predictive spatial habitat model using the Maxent model was developed based on presence-only whale sighting data. In addition, remotely sensed sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations were assessed to investigate the spatio-temporal variation in sea surface conditions. Habitat preference was predicted in areas between canyon heads, with the most influential predictor variables being depth and distance from the continental shelf break. Analysis of remote-sensing data highlighted low localised variability in surface waters and illustrated the seasonal trends of the Leeuwin Current. This study demonstrates the influence of bathymetry and submarine geomorphology on enhanced cetacean abundance and highlights the need for recognition of this potential foraging area in marine reserve planning. Characterising adaptive genetic divergence among conspecific populations is often achieved by studying genetic variation across defined environmental gradients. In marine systems this is challenging due to a paucity of information on habitat heterogeneity at local and regional scales and a dependency on sampling regimes that are typically limited to broad longitudinal and latitudinal environmental gradients. As a result, the spatial scales at which selection processes operate and the environmental factors that contribute to genetic adaptation in marine systems are likely to be unclear. In this study we explore patterns of adaptive genetic structuring in a commercially‐ harvested abalone species (Haliotis rubra) from southeastern Australia, using a panel of genome‐wide SNP markers (5,239 SNPs), and a sampling regime informed by marine LiDAR bathymetric imagery and 20‐year hindcasted oceanographic models. Despite a lack of overall genetic structure across the sampling distribution, significant genotype associations with heterogeneous habitat features were observed at local and regional spatial scales, including associations with wave energy, ocean current, sea surface temperature, and geology. These findings provide insights into the potential resilience of the species to changing marine climates and the role of migration and selection on recruitment processes, with implications for conservation and fisheries management. This study points to the spatial scales at which selection processes operate in marine systems and highlights the benefits of geospatially‐informed sampling regimes for overcoming limitations associated with marine population genomic research. Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous in the ocean, transporting semi‐isolated water masses as well as advecting tracers and biota. The extent to which eddies impact the environment depends on the time they retain water parcels. Here we quantify retention times of mesoscale eddies in a (1/10)° model of the East Australian Current and its extension along the southeast coast of Australia. We find that retention times vary widely, between 3 and 357 days, but peak around 24 and 27 days for anticyclones and cyclones, respectively. Changes in eddy shape, though not in eddy size, relate to water exchange between the eddy and the background flow. An increase in eccentricity (eddy elongation) often leads to water leakage, while a decrease is associated with water retention. Thus, the change in eddy eccentricity can be used as a diagnostic of the eddy's likelihood to exchange water with its surrounding. We find that water within a region of the eddy that is close to uniform rotation and rotating faster than uniform vorticity is more likely to be retained. Typical retention times are long enough for eddies to transport water across regions of contrasting hydrographic properties, develop a biogeochemical response, and influence connectivity patterns. El Niño and La Niña, the warm and cold phases of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), cause significant year-to-year disruptions in global climate, including in the atmosphere, oceans, and cryosphere. Australia is one of the countries where its climate, including droughts and flooding rains, is highly sensitive to the temporal and spatial variations of ENSO. The dramatic impacts of ENSO on the environment, society, health, and economies worldwide make the application of reliable ENSO predictions a powerful way to manage risks and resources. An improved understanding of ENSO dynamics in a changing climate has the potential to lead to more accurate and reliable ENSO predictions by facilitating improved forecast systems. This motivated an Australian national workshop on ENSO dynamics and prediction that was held in Sydney, Australia, in November 2017. This workshop followed the aftermath of the 2015/16 extreme El Niño, which exhibited different characteristics to previous extreme El Niños and whose early evolution since 2014 was challenging to predict. This essay summarizes the collective workshop perspective on recent progress and challenges in understanding ENSO dynamics and predictability and improving forecast systems. While this essay discusses key issues from an Australian perspective, many of the same issues are important for other ENSO-affected countries and for the international ENSO research community. The importance of the Subtropical Convergence Zone south of Australia as a feeding area to the pygmy blue whale of the eastern Indian Ocean was investigated to better understand migration patterns and habitat use. A combination of satellite tagging studies during 2003–2005 and acoustic and visual surveys during the austral summer of 2013 confirmed the presence of pygmy blue whales in the Subtropical Convergence Zone and provided evidence for feeding throughout the region. Of the 67 pygmy blue whales acoustically detected, many were localized in proximity to sea surface temperature fronts and high chlorophyll concentrations, which could be a behavioral strategy to attract conspecifics to good feeding sites. Aggregations of up to four pygmy blue whales, along with decreased call rates during the day, may suggest feeding despite no direct observations of pygmy blue whales consuming euphausiids. The oceanographic features present throughout the Subtropical Convergence Zone continue to create an environment productive enough to support the world's largest living mammals during their migratory foraging movements between the Southern Ocean and Indonesia. Understanding the processes driving species distributions is a key question in ecology, yet obtaining pertinent data for many species can be challenging. Tag-recapture data from voluntary recreational fisheries programmes is an undervalued citizen science data resource and can provide valuable observation records for data-poor species. Here, we highlight the utility of such data by compiling four tag-recapture datasets (n = 20 878 tags) to describe the movements and distribution of a piscivorous predator, tailor Pomatomus saltatrix, with respect to their environment. We compared species distribution models that explored a trade-off between temporal duration and spatial extent. Both models revealed sea surface temperature (SST) was an important factor in describing the distribution and density of tailor. However, the model with broader spatial extent indicated a non-linear response to SST, peaking at 21.5°C, while the model with temporal longevity showed a linear SST response. This disjunct showcases the importance of building models across an adequate geographic extent to ensure covariate responses are not truncated. This is the first study to comprehensively describe the distribution and migrations of adult tailor across their eastern Australian distribution. The results are discussed in light of ocean warming along eastern Australia, and the subsequent implications for using tag-recapture data in fisheries management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Southern Ocean mesoscale eddies play an important role in ocean circulation and biogeochemical cycling, but their biological characteristics have not been well quantified at the basin scale. To address this, we combined a 15‐year tracked eddy data set with satellite observations of ocean color, sea surface temperature, and autonomous profiling floats to quantify the surface and subsurface properties of eddies. Anomalies of surface temperature and chlorophyll were examined in eddy‐centric composite averages constructed from thousands of eddies. Normalized surface chlorophyll anomalies (chlnorm) vary seasonally and geographically. Cyclones typically show positive chlnorm, while anticyclones have negative chlnorm. The sign of chlnorm reverses during late summer and autumn for eddies between the Subtropical and Polar Fronts. The reversal is most obvious in the Indian sector, and we attribute this to a combination of eddy stirring (deformation of surface gradients by the rotational velocity of an eddy) and deeper winter mixing in anticyclones. Both chlnorm and sea surface temperature anomalies transition from dipole structures north of the Subtropical Front to monopole structures south of the Subantarctic Front. Sea surface temperature and chlnorm composites provide evidence for eddy trapping (transporting of anomalies) and eddy stirring. This research provides a basin‐scale study of surface chlorophyll in Southern Ocean eddies and reveals counterintuitive biogeochemical signals. That is, clockwise rotating eddies have lower plankton concentrations compared to neighboring waters and counterclockwise rotating eddies have higher concentrations. To explain this, we examined how deep these eddies mix the ocean in the preceding months. We found that counterclockwise rotating eddies mix the ocean deeper in winter, allowing more nutrients to enter their interiors, leading to higher productivity. This work is important because eddy productivity plays a significant role in the exchange of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere. Abstract: Owing to their strong forcing of the ocean surface, tropical cyclones strongly modify the hydrodynamics of Australia's North West Shelf (one of the world's tropical cyclone hot spots), which in turn plays a dominant role in its sediment dynamics. Previous modeling studies have focused on describing the short‐term sediment dynamics during individual tropical cyclones but have lacked validation of the responses using field observations. As a consequence, the long‐term cumulative impact of the tropical cyclones on the residual sediment transport pathways at the shelf scale remains unclear. In this study we apply a sediment transport model over the North West Shelf, validate its performance using an extensive field data set, and implement a 14‐year‐long model simulation to assess the sediment fluxes. The model results confirm the overwhelming role tropical cyclones play on sediment transport processes over most of the shelf, despite each cyclone only influencing a small portion of the shelf at a particular time. Overall, we identified 19 tropical cyclone events over the 14‐year period, which, despite accounting for less than 5% of time, were found to drive the majority of both the suspended sediment alongshore and seaward cross‐shore transport. The results revealed significant interannual variability of the tropical cyclone‐induced sediment dynamics with greater suspended transport during the three consecutive Ningaloo Niño years (2011–2013) where sea surface temperatures off northwestern Australia were anomalously warm with elevated tropical cyclone activity. A step by step algorithm for air–sea CO2 flux (F(CO2)) calculation from satellite parameters is presented in this study. Parameters used for F(CO2) calculation are: (1) sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Aqua (MODIS Aqua), (2) sea surface salinity (SSS) estimated from MODIS Aqua SST using multiple linear regression, (3) seawater CO2 fugacity (f(CO)) estimated by MODIS Aqua SST and chl-a using feedforward neural networks, (4) atmospheric CO2 fugacity (f(CO)) from the Cape Grim station, and (5) wind speed from the Quick and Advanced Scatterometer (QSCAT and ASCAT). In situ data provided by (1) the Surveillance de l'Océan Austral – Monitoring the Southern Ocean (SURVOSTRAL) project, (2) the Integrated Marine Observed System (IMOS) project, and (3) Mesures à l'INterface Eau-aiR de la Variabilité des échanges de CO2 (MINERVE) project collected on the research vessel L'Astrolabe, are used to establish and validate the models. These models are then tested using remote sensing data. This work focus on the southern ocean from the south of Australia to the Antarctica coasts (between 43.5° S and 67° S), on the period of spring and Austral summer (from October to March, between 2002/2003 and 2014/2015). In each step, the result's precision of experiments was determined by the root mean square error (RMSE). Results show (1) an improvement of satellite SSS estimation with a precision of ±0.16 using SST and latitude, (2) an estimation of f(CO) by satellite data with a good accuracy of ±9.45 µatm (0.96 Pa), and (3) a calculation of F(CO2) using satellite data with a global RMSE of about ±3 mmol CO2 m–2 day–1. The interpolated F(CO2) shows that, in the period of austral spring and summer, this region absorbs the atmospheric CO2, and becomes a stronger sink of CO2 throughout the years (from an overall average absorption of about 2 mmol CO2 m–2 day–1 in 2002/2003 to about 7 mmol CO2 m–2 day–1 in 2014/2015).
