Background: Current evidence implicates a significant association between depression and obesity and related metabolic dysfunction. The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) was recently identified as an ideal index that integrates total body fat, muscle mass, and bone mass. This study investigated the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms in adults., Methods: Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) were enrolled. Depressive symptom severity was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and generalized additive models were used to determine the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms., Results: A total of 34,575 participants were included, with a mean WWI of 11.01; 2,979 participants were suspected of having depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). A significant positive association was identified between WWI and depressive symptoms (odds ratio = 1.416, 95 % confidence interval: 1.303-1.539, P < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses suggested that the association between WWI and depressive symptoms was stronger in individuals who were female, overweight, divorced, middle-aged or older (over 40 years old), and had diabetes. Furthermore, the non-linear multivariable regression revealed an inflection point for the WWI at 11.438, and the association was only significant when the WWI was higher than this point., Limitations: This study was retrospective and only included participants from the United States; therefore, further validation is needed from studies in other countries, especially middle-to-low-income countries, using longitudinal cohorts., Conclusions: This study identified a significant positive association between WWI and depressive symptoms., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2024. Obesity is associated with gut microbiome dysbiosis. Our previous research has shown that highly branched rhamnogalacturonan type I (RG-I)-enriched pectin (WRP, 531.5 kDa, 70.44% RG-I, Rha/(Gal + Ara) = 20) and its oligosaccharide with less branched RG-I [DWRP, 12.1 kDa, 50.29% RG-I, Rha/(Gal + Ara) = 6] are potential prebiotics. The present study is conducted to uncover the impact of the content, molecular size, and branch degrees of RG-I on the inhibiting effect of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. The commercial pectin (CP, 496.2 kDa, 35.77% RG-I, Rha/(Gal + Ara) = 6), WRP, and DWRP were orally administered to HFD-fed C57BL/6J mice (100 mg kg -1 d -1 ) to determine their individual effects on obesity. WRP significantly prevented bodyweight gain, insulin resistance, and inflammatory responses in HFD-fed mice. No obvious anti-obesity effect was observed in either CP or DWRP supplementation. A mechanistic study revealed that CP and DWRP could not enhance the diversity of gut microbiota, while WRP treatment positively modulated the gut microbiota of obese mice by increasing the abundance of Butyrivibrio , Roseburia , Barnesiella , Flavonifractor , Acetivibrio , and Clostridium cluster IV. Furthermore, WRP significantly promoted browning of white adipose tissues in HFD-fed mice, while CP and DWRP did not. WRP can attenuate the HFD-induced obesity by modulation of gut microbiota and lipid metabolism. Highly branched RG-I domain enrichment is essential for pectin mitigating against the HFD-induced obesity.

Objective: Obesity is considered as one of the risk factors of kidney cancer. However, the results are not consistent in reported original studies, as well as in published meta-analysis. This study aims to clarify the relationship between overweight/obesity and kidney cancer by an updated overall and dose-response meta-analysis., Methods: This meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guideline. Relevant studies were searched using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The studies were limited to human cohort studies in English and Chinese language. Random-effect models and dose-response meta-analysis were used to synthesize the results. Subgroup analyses were also conducted based on the characteristics of participants., Results: Twenty-four cohort studies with 8,953,478 participants were included in our meta-analysis. Compared to the normal weight, the pooled RRs of kidney cancer was 1.35 (1.27-1.43) in overweight and 1.76 (1.61-1.91) in obese participants. An increased kidney cancer risk of 1.06 (1.05-1.06) for each 1 kg/m increase in BMI was showed in dose-response meta-analysis. No significant heterogeneity was found across studies with I = 39.4% for overweight, and I = 43.3% for obesity., Conclusion: The overall and dose-response meta-analysis suggested that overweight/obesity increases the risk of kidney cancer both in men and women.

Purpose: To examine the associations of healthy dietary patterns with cardiometabolic biomarkers and all-cause mortality among individuals with prediabetes. Methods: This cohort study included 8363 adults with prediabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2014. Healthy dietary patterns including Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), Alternate Mediterranean Diet score (AMED), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score (DASH), and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) were calculated based on 24-h dietary recall data. Mortality status was obtained by linkage to National Death Index records. Cardiometabolic biomarkers, including blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, C-reactive protein (CRP), and lipids, were measured at recruitment. Results: During 61,991 person-years of follow-up, 991 deaths occurred. Comparing the extreme quartiles, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality were 0.65 (0.49, 0.85) for AHEI-2010 (P-trend = 0.002), 0.68 (0.50, 0.92) for AMED (P-trend = 0.004), 0.72 (0.53, 0.98) for DASH (P-trend = 0.03), and 0.78 (0.58, 1.05) for HEI-2015 (P-trend = 0.08). Besides, the HRs (95% CIs) for all-cause mortality per 20-percentile increment in scores were 0.78 (0.67, 0.90) for AHEI-2010 (P = 0.001), 0.73 (0.62, 0.86) for AMED (P < 0.001), 0.84 (0.69, 1.02) for DASH (P = 0.08), and 0.86 (0.74, 1.00) for HEI-2015 (P = 0.04). In addition, higher dietary scores were associated with favorable blood glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, blood lipids, and CRP (all P-trend < 0.05). The high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and CRP explained 1.53–9.21% of the associations between dietary patterns and all-cause mortality (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Diets with higher AHEI-2010, AMED, DASH, and HEI-2015 were associated with improved cardiometabolic factors and lower all-cause mortality among individuals with prediabetes. These findings suggest that multiple healthy dietary patterns instead of a one-size-fits-all diet plan might be beneficial and acceptable for individuals with prediabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ovarian epithelial type tumors of the testis have been a rare clinical entity. Its awareness and management remain a clinical challenge. We described the case of an 18-year-old, obese male patient who presented with scrotal enlargement. He underwent eversion of tunica vaginalis and resection of epididymal mass. The histology of the resected sample showed an ovarian epithelial type borderline tumor. We believe our case helps to strengthen awareness and management of this rare disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
