The ecological function of biological crusts in arid and semi-arid areas is of great importance. Bacteria, as a crucial microbial group in biological crusts, play a key role in the formation, nutrient cycling, and regulation of these crusts. However, the succession of biological crusts and the diversity of bacterial communities, along with key environmental factors in the Loess Plateau's hilly and gully areas, remain unclear. This study investigated soil bacterial abundance and diversity in bare soil (BS), alga-lichen mixed crust (MC), and alga-lichen mixed crust subsoil (MCS) using high-throughput sequencing methods. It explored the relationship between the bacterial community in biological crusts and key environmental factors. The results indicated that the Chao1, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity of bacteria significantly increased with the succession of biological crusts. There were notable differences in the community composition and structure of bacteria at different stages of crust development, with Rubrobacteria and Cyanobacteriia dominating in MCS. Effective phosphorus, available potassium, nitrogen, pH, and total organic carbon were identified as key environmental factors affecting soil bacterial communities. In summary, the succession of biological crusts alters soil physicochemical characteristics and creates different ecological niches for bacterial communities. Forest water reclamation is a decades-old practice of repurposing municipal reclaimed water using land application on forests to filter nutrients and increase wood production. However, long-term application may lead to nutrient saturation, leaching, and potential impairment of ground and surface water quality. We studied long-term effects of reclaimed water application on nutrient leaching potential in a four-decade time series of forest water reclamation facilities in northern Idaho. Our approach compared reclaimed water treated plots with untreated control plots at each of the forest water reclamation facilities. We measured soil nitrifier abundance and net nitrification rates and used tension lysimeters to sample soil matrix water and drain gauges to sample from a combination of matrix and preferential flow paths. We determined nutrient leaching as the product of soil water nutrient concentrations and model-estimated drainage flux. There was more than 450-fold increase in nitrifier abundance and a 1000-fold increase in net nitrification rates in treated plots compared with control plots at long-established facilities, indicating greater nitrate production with increased cumulative inputs. There were no differences in soil water ammonium, phosphate, and dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations between control and effluent treatments in tension lysimeter samples. However, concurrent with increased nitrifier abundance and net nitrification, nitrate concentration below the rooting zone was 2 to 4-fold higher and nitrate leaching was 4 to 10-fold higher in effluent treated plots, particularly at facilities that have been in operation for over two decades. Thus, net nitrification and nitrifier abundance assays are likely indicators of nitrate leaching potential. Inorganic nutrient concentrations in drain gauge samples were 2 to 11-fold higher than lysimeter samples, suggesting nutrient losses occurred predominantly through preferential flow paths. Nitrate was vulnerable to leaching during the wet season under saturated flow conditions. Although nitrogen saturation is a concern that should be mitigated at long-established facilities, these forest water reclamation facilities were able to maintain average soil water nitrate concentrations to less than 2 mg L -1 , so that nitrogen and phosphorous are effectively filtered to below safe water standards., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. We hypothesized that female and male individuals of the dioecious tree species, Juniperus communis , exhibit different strategies of resource allocation when growing under stress conditions. To test this hypothesis, we performed a two-year pot experiment on plants exposed to different levels of nutrient availability. Analysis of the plants revealed a higher concentration of carbohydrates, carbon, and phenolic compounds in needles of female plants, indicating that females allocate more resources to storage and defense than males. This difference was independent of nutrient availability. Differences in carbohydrates levels between the sexes were most often significant in June, during the most intensive phase of vegetative growth in both sexes, but could also be attributed to female resources investment in cone development. A higher level of nitrogen and other macroelements was observed in males than in females, which may have been connected to the accumulation of resources (nitrogen) for pollen grain production in males or greater allocation of these elements to seeds and cones in females. The interaction between sex and soil fertilization for the C:N ratio may also indicate sex-specific patterns of resource allocation and utilization, which is impacted by their availability during specific periods of J. communis annual life cycle.

The dependency of microbial activity on nutrient availability in soil is only partly understood, but highly relevant for nutrient cycling dynamics. In order to achieve more insight on microbial adaptations to nutrient limiting conditions, precise physiological knowledge is needed. Therefore, we developed an experimental system assessing traits of 16 saprobic fungal isolates in nitrogen (N) limited conditions. We tested the hypotheses that (1) fungal traits are negatively affected by N deficiency to a similar extent and (2) fungal isolates respond in a phylogenetically conserved fashion. Indeed, mycelial density, spore production and fungal activity (respiration and enzymatic activity) responded similarly to limiting conditions by an overall linear decrease. By contrast, mycelial extension and hyphal elongation peaked at lowest N supply (C:N 200), causing maximal biomass production at intermediate N contents. Optimal N supply rates differed among isolates, but only the extent of growth reduction was phylogenetically conserved. In conclusion, growth responses appeared as a switch from explorative growth in low nutrient conditions to exploitative growth in nutrient-rich patches, as also supported by responses to phosphorus and carbon limitations. There have been no studies demonstrating the correlation between soil nutrient heterogeneity and cadmium (Cd) absorption of Bermudagrass. In this study, a pot experiment was carried out to study the correlation between them. The purpose is to find soil nutrient factors which are conducive to improving the Cd absorption and translocation. The eighth group had the largest total number of surviving plants, the highest Fv/Fo value (3.24) and the best growth characteristics. The fifth group had the lowest total number of surviving plants, Fv/Fo (2.47) and the worst growth. The Cd content of the fifth group (36.11 mg kg -1 ) was close to the eighth group (35.72 mg kg -1 ), but the two groups had significant differences in plant height, stem node length and stem node number (P < 0.05). The eighth group showed the highest contents of nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 - -N), available potassium and urease activity. The fifth group showed the lowest NO 3 -N) and available phosphorus content. There was significant difference of the Cd bioconcentration factors (BCF) and translocation factor (TCF) between the fifth and the eighth group although they had the similar total soil Cd content (P < 0.05). The fifth group had the highest BCF and TCF. RDA analysis indicated the BCF and TCF were positively correlated with soil NH - -N and available phosphorus and negatively correlated with soil NO 4 -N. The results demonstrated that soil NH + -N and available phosphorus were important soil ecological factors to enhance Cd absorption and translocation of bermudagrass.4 + -N and available phosphorus and negatively correlated with soil NO 3 - -N. The effects of precipitation patterns on the metabolism of soil microbes are poorly understood, especially in water-limited ecosystems where soil microorganisms play crucial roles in the turnover of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrients. We investigated the influence of the gradient levels of mean annual precipitation (MAP from 300 to 900 mm) on soil microbial metabolism in an arid and semi-arid grassland region located in Loess Plateau, China and identified relationships between microbial metabolic limitations and the variation of soil organic matter (SOM). Microbial metabolism in this arid and semi-arid region was limited by soil C and phosphorus (P) or nitrogen (N). Microbial C and P limitations decreased with the increase of MAP. Microbial C and P limitations were lowest in the areas with MAPs of 700-900 mm, whereas N limitation was observed in the areas with MAPs >700 mm. The results of a variation-partitioning analysis and partial least squares path modeling indicated that the microbial C and N/P limitations on regional scales were mainly determined by climate factors (MAP and mean annual temperature (MAT)), followed by vegetation biomass and soil properties. The extents of soil drying-rewetting processing caused by different MAPs directly affected microbial nutrient limitation. Our results suggested that the influence of precipitation variation on microbial metabolic limitation strongly governed SOM stability and that an increase in the rate of SOM decomposition with increasing precipitation could be caused by increased microbial nutrient limitation. SOM may be most stable at a MAP of 700 mm in the arid and semi-arid regions (300-900 mm MAP) where microbial nutrient limitation was lowest. Recently, there is a growing interest among agriculturists to use nanotechnology for the development of nutrient-use efficient fertilizers. However, its sustainable use for the synthesis of mineral or organic nano-fertilizers requires a thoughtful of the mechanism as well as the fate of nutrients and their interaction with soil-plant systems. Therefore, the aim of current study was to investigate the mixing of three different application rates of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs: 1.4, 2.8 and 3.6 mg kg -1 soil) as well as zeolite (141, 282 and 423 mg kg -1 soil) with biogas slurry (AS) on soil nutrient availability and herbage nitrogen (N) and zinc (Zn) uptake in a standard pot experiment. We found that both ZNPs and zeolite significantly increased mineral N content in soil compared to AS alone (P < 0.05). On the other hand, plant available phosphorus or potassium and microbial biomass carbon (C) in the soil were neither significantly affected by any application rate of ZNPs nor zeolite mixed AS. Soil microbial biomass N was significantly higher in second and third application rates of both ZNPs and zeolite amended AS treatments compared to AS alone. However, this increment in mineral N did not influence shoot uptake and herbage apparent recovery of this nutrient from AS. Similarly, co-mixing of both ZNPs and zeolite in AS did not influence shoot N uptake but Zn uptake was significantly higher in this treatment compared to AS alone. Ecological stoichiometry has been widely used to determine how plant-soil systems respond to global change and to reveal which factors limit plant growth. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can increase plants' uptake of nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), thereby altering plant and soil stoichiometries. To understand the regulatory effect of AMF feedback on plants and soil stoichiometry under global change, a microcosm experiment was conducted with warming and N input. The C₄ grass Setaria viridis , C₃ grass Leymus chinensis , and Chenopodiaceae species Suaeda corniculata were studied. The results showed that the mycorrhizal benefits for the C₄ grass S. viridis were greater than those for the C₃ grass L. chinensis , whereas for the Chenopodiaceae species S. corniculata , AMF symbiosis was antagonistic. Under N input and a combination of warming and N input, AMF significantly decreased the N:P ratios of all three species. Under N input, the soil N content and the N:P ratio were decreased significantly in the presence of AMF, whereas the soil C:N ratio was increased. These results showed that AMF can reduce the P limitation caused by N input and improve the efficiency of nutrient utilization, slow the negative influence of global change on plant growth, and promote grassland sustainability.

Outside soil spray seeding (OSSS) is used widely for road cut revegetation, and the artificial soil used in OSSS can improve slope soil conditions and nutrients, and help promote plant growth and succession. Three different slopes was investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of OSSS for restoration, including a natural slope (NS), a cut slope without any artificial recovery treatment (CSW) and a cut slope treated with OSSS (CSO). The recovery of cut slopes was determined by evaluating a number of factors, including indices associated with plants on the slopes, soil enzyme activities (urease and sucrase), and soil nutrient content (soil organic matter (SOM), total phosphorous (TP), total potassium (TK), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorous (AP), available potassium (AK), potassium (K + ), calcium (Ca 2+ ), magnesium (Mg 2+ ), and sulphate (SO 4 )). The results indicated that the vegetation and soil conditions differed between the three slopes. The Shannon-Wiener index (H), the Simpson index (D), and the Margalef index (R) values from the CSO and NS were lower than those of the CSW, whilst the Pielou index (E) value and vegetation canopy cover were higher for the CSO and NS than for the CSW. The content of SOM and AN in soil from the CSO was lower than in soil from the NS and CSW, and content of many nutrients were higher in soil from the CSO than in soil from the NS and CSW. This suggests that the restoration of vegetation and soil nutrients on the CSO was relatively successful. Our results indicated that the use of OSSS to restore cut slopes is effective in plateau areas. However, despite improvements in soil nutrient levels, there were still nutritional imbalances. Therefore, more attention should be paid to balancing nutrients in the later stage of OSSS implementation for the recovery of cut slopes at high altitudes.2- )). A multi soil layering (MSL) treatment bioreactor was developed aiming at nutrients removal from anaerobically digested swine wastewater (ADSW). The start-up of the MSL bioreactor and its performance in nutrients removal at different hydraulic loading rate (HLR) were investigated. Results showed that the MSL bioreactor was successfully started up after operation for 28 days, and at this time, the removal efficiencies of ammonia-N, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the ADSW reached 63.6%, 58.5%, and 46.5%, respectively. The MSL bioreactor showed a stable performance during the whole working process with varying HLR from 80 to 200 L/(m²·day). Maximum removal efficiencies of ammonia-N, TN and TP were obtained at 160 L/(m²·day), and was appeared as 94.2%, 94.4%, and 92.5%, respectively. It was worth noting that iron scraps were the key factor that enhanced the independent capability of the MSL bioreactor in TP removal, because there was only 21.4⁻25.8% of the TP was removed when the MSL bioreactor run with no iron addition.

Macro- and micro nutrients were managed in soil and mulberry foliage through application of urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Urea at the rate of 608 kg/ha and DAP at the rate of 260 kg/ha was applied on six mulberry varieties. The results showed a deficiency in nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc and manganese in soil before the fertilizer application. Contrarily, high copper and potassium contents were found. After three weeks of fertilizer application, concentration of N, P, K and Fe in the soil almost doubled. Zinc and Cu contents decreased significantly (p<0.01). The highest N, P and K were found in mulberry variety PFI-1, M. latifolia and Karyansuban, respectively. The highest Cu and Mn were found in Kanmasi. The highest Zn and Fe were found in Husang and Karyansuban, respectively. A significant variation in uptake and retention of macro- and micro nutrients was found in the mulberry varieties after fertilizer application. The highest N was taken up by Kanmasi, while the highest P and K were taken up by Husang. Iron and Cu increased, and Zn and Mn decreased after week 3 of fertilizer application. Nitrogen was 1.5 to 2.6 times greater after week 6 of fertilizer application compared to before fertilizer application. Similarly, P and K were 4.7 to 6.6 times and 2.6 to 3.9 times greater, respectively. Based on these findings, it is concluded that urea in split doses and diammonium phosphate in single dose should be applied 3-4 weeks before the commencement of rearing of Mulberry Silkworm Moth for nutritionally rich mulberry foliage.
