These two articles have described a simple study based on random observations that will allow the nurse manager to establish hours standards for care provided to patients of varying acuity levels. While this study is a quick-and-easy method of obtaining data on standards of current practice, it is an inexpensive method that can be used on a regular basis to track trends in a highly dynamic health care environment.

This article reviews the institution-based data elements that must be regularly analyzed by the nursing administrator. Some of the major exogenous factors having impact on today's health care institutions are discussed. A method for developing contingency plans as part of the normal ongoing administrative role is suggested.

This article details a simplified approach to within-the-year supply expenses projections. Each factor of the projection formulas is discussed and the final formulas given. An example clarifies the projection calculations.
