Few would argue with the idea that nursing research should be conducted ethically yet obtaining ethical approval is considered by many to have become unnecessarily burdensome. This brief article investigates the idea that there might be a relationship between the level of perceived burdensomeness of the research ethics application process on the one hand and the character of the nurse-researcher on the other. Given that nurses are required to be other-regarding, a nurse who undertakes research primarily for self-regarding reasons would seem to be acting in ways inconsistent with the aims of nursing as set out in nursing codes. It is suggested that the self-regarding nurse-researcher may find the ethics application process more burdensome than the other-regarding nurse-researcher who, it is further suggested, is engaged with nursing research as a practice in the technical sense in which that term has been developed by the philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre., (© 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

IT IS ESSENTIAL that all research is carried out in a manner that is transparently in line with ethical thinking. This is even more important when the subjects or participants are children or young people. The Medical Research Council ( 2004 ) identified that children 'require special protection because they are less likely than adults to be able to express their needs or defend their interests - they may not have the capacity to consent'.

This article describes the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and justice within the nurse researcher-participant relationship as these principles relate to the informed consent process for research. Within this process, the nurse is confronted with a dual role. This article describes how nurses, who are in the dual role of care provider and researcher, can apply these ethical principles to their practice in conjunction with the American Nurses Association's code of ethics for nurses. This article also describes, as an element of ethical practice, the importance of using participant-centered quality measures to aid informed decision making of participants in research. In addition, the article provides strategies for improving the informed consent process in nursing research. The nurse-midwife and scientist share similar ethos (fundamental attitudes that guide action); yet, in their respective professional roles, ethos can translate into actions that appear discordant. Discord can lead to resolution, when examined through the primary principles of ethical conduct: autonomy, beneficence, nonmalfeasance, and justice.

Objective: to present recently developed guidelines by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to guide the ethical conduct of research by midwives across international and culturally diverse communities. To illustrate the complexities of conducting collaborative research across diverse communities, a case study is provided highlighting unequal power balances, legal, ethical and cultural constraints., Background: the research guidelines are structured using a human rights framework. The document was developed with input and consideration by the ICM Research Standing Committee and comments of 35 delegates who participated in a workshop to evaluate the guidelines from the perspectives of frontline midwifery clinicians, leaders and researchers. It is intended to serve as a blueprint for midwives aiming to enter into a collaborative research partnership with ethnic and culturally diverse groups., Conclusions: although the document was developed with the international midwifery community in mind, it will guide any researcher seeking to conduct research in the best interest of women, their newborn babies, their families, and their wider communities.

The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) highly regards evidence-based practice (EBP) as a guide to promoting "Best Practices" and improving patient outcomes. EBP is now considered the "gold standard" in improving patient care through the use of the best available evidence. EBP models provide the health care provider with a rigorous systematic method of rating and appraising the evidence that includes, but is not limited to, randomized controlled trials, descriptive studies, qualitative studies, national guidelines, and expert opinion. ASPAN's EBP Team was charged with the development of an EBP Conceptual Model to provide the framework for future perianesthesia practice, education, and research. This article describes how ASPAN's EBP model may be used as a framework for practice and research.

Since 2001 the World Health Organization Europe's family health nurse (FHN) role has been developing in remote and rural areas of Scotland. In 2003, an independent evaluation identified a need for facilitation of the FHN role and family-health orientated approaches with local primary health care teams. The Scottish Executive Health Department appointed three part-time, regionally-based family health practice development facilitators (FHPDFs) in December 2003 to work over an 18-month period. This article presents findings from a small study which sought these FHPDFs' judgements on individual FHN autonomy and supportive colleague action at 24 sites where FHNs were practising. These judgements reveal a picture of mixed progress that is consistent with findings from other related research. This collective overview is presented in the form of a new typology and the resultant implications for future development of family health nursing are discussed.

Research ethics encompass debate about what research topics matter, for example in relation to social values and individual needs, and debate about how to conduct research in an ethical manner, for example in relation to protecting the rights of vulnerable research participants. Research in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where critically ill infants receive expensive and often invasive treatment, raises unique issues with regard to what research should be conducted and how to conduct it in an ethical manner. This discussion addresses the neonatal nurse's role in setting the research agenda in neonatal care-influencing what topics are researched and serving as lead investigators on studies, and highlights their role in ensuring that research is conducted correctly-protecting the rights of infant participants and their families. The involvement of neonatal nurses in research ethics has been a valuable contribution to the development of the field. A greater level of involvement is now needed, particularly at the policy level where funding and procedural issues are decided. New approaches are also needed and could involve more direct collaboration between nurses and parents.

The purpose of this article is to discuss ways that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is influencing the conduct of research, including the implications for institutional review boards, recruitment of subjects, obtaining consent, access to data, de-identification of data, authorization to disclose data, and the processing, transmission, and storage of collected data.
