Abstract: Two nucleon transfer reactions at low bombarding energies are an ideal tool to investigate nucleon-nucleon correlations. With heavy ions one has the possibility to transfer several nucleon pairs, involving both neutrons and protons at the same time. In this work we will study how pair correlations can be probed in heavy ion collisions , and how the strong Coulomb field influences the reaction dynamic.

Abstract: International audience; Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se80,82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (61+) and (81+) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 41+ state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 61+ state and the yrare 42+ state and lifetime limits of the yrast (101+) state and of the 51− state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract: The 50 � N,Z � 82 region of the Segrè chart, spanning the nuclei “northwest” of doubly-magic 132Sn, is an intriguing study ground to test the suitability and predictive power of nuclear models at both low and high spins. Low-spin excited states in the nearly spherical nuclei near proton- and neutronshell closures are well described as anharmonic vibrations [1] with a gradual change to rotational structures further away from the closed shells. Further on, quasiparticle excitations play a key role and are responsible for the presence of yrast-trap isomers. These long-lived states interrupt and fragment the decay flux in spectroscopic investigations. High-j couplings involving the unique-parity h11/2 neutron-hole orbital give rise to a wealth of high-spin states with multi-quasiparticle character. In particular, detailed knowledge of isomers is crucial to ascertain the active quasiparticle configurations in the specific nucleus.

Abstract: The neutron-rich nucleus \nucleus{200}{Pt} is investigated via in-beam \gamma-ray spectroscopy in order to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N = 126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction \nucleus{198}{Pt}(\nucleus{82}{Se}, \nucleus{80}{Se})\nucleus{200}{Pt} is used to populate excited states of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects \gamma rays coincident with the \nucleus{80}{Se} recoils, the binary partner of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The binary partner method is applied to extract the \gamma-ray transitions and build the level scheme of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The level at 1884\,keV reported by Yates et. al [Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889] was confirmed to be at 1882.1\,keV and assigned as the (6^+_1) state. An additional \gamma ray was found and it presumably de-excites the (8^+_1) state. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even \nucleus{190-204}{Pt} isotopes, revealing that \nucleus{200}{Pt} marks the transition from the \gamma-unstable behaviour of lighter Pt nuclei towards a more spherical one when approaching the N=126 shell closure.

Abstract: International audience; We measured multinucleon transfer reactions in the $^{40}$Ar + $^{208}$Pb system at an energy close to the Coulomb barrier, by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. We extracted differential and total cross sections of the different transfer channels, with a careful investigation of the total kinetic energy loss distributions. Comparisons between different systems having the same Pb208 target and with projectiles going from neutron-poor to neutron-rich nuclei, i.e., $^{40}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni, and $^{40}$Ar, as well as between the data and GRAZING calculations have been carried out. The neutron-rich (stable) $^{40}$Ar beam allowed us to get access to the channels involving proton pickup, whose behavior in connection with the production of neutron-rich heavy partner has been outlined.

Abstract: WOS: 000310091000001, The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. Abstract: International audience; Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all.Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange.Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in a high-resolution gamma-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber.Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the GRAZING model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA.Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z = 93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes.

Abstract: International audience; The level structure of the neutron-rich 69Cu, 71Cu, and 73Cu isotopes has been investigated by means ofmultinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using theAGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states inCu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrixelements for transitions from excited states in 69,71,73Cu nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particlecharacter of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, givingfurther insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g9/2 orbital.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei.Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region.Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE).Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found.Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

Abstract: An excitation function of one- and two-neutron transfer channels for the 60Ni+116Sn system has been measured with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA in a wide energy range, from the Coulomb barrier to far below it. The experimental transfer probabilities are well reproduced, for the first time with heavy ions, in absolute values and in slope by microscopic calculations which incorporate nucleon-nucleon pairing correlations.

Abstract: The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188-198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states

Abstract: The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188−198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states.

Abstract: The neutron-rich cobalt isotopes up to A = 67 have been studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a 238U target with a 460-MeV 70Zn beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt γ rays belonging to each nucleus has been achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data are discussed in terms of the systematics of the cobalt isotopes and interpreted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the fpgd model space. Abstract: The level structures of the N = 50, 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ -ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28.

Abstract: Yrast states up to (6+) in the neutron-rich 40S nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215 MeV beam of 36S ions with a thin 208Pb target. The novel experimental setup that combines the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the high-efficiency γ -ray detection array, CLARA, was used. A new γ -ray transition at an energy of 1572 keV was observed and tentatively assigned to the (6+) → (4+) transition. A comparison of experimental observations and the results of large-scale 0hω sd-pf shell-model calculations indicates that one- and two-proton excitations from the 2s1/2 to the 1d3/2 orbitals play an important role in reproducing the 40S yrast level structure and the published B(E2 ; 0+g.s.→ 2+) value. The structure of the yrast states of the even-A isotopes of sulfur is interpreted in terms of the configurations of valence protons and neutrons within the context of large-scale 0hω sd-pf shell-model calculations.

Abstract: Excited states in the N = 30 neutron-rich 49K have been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions with thin targets and the PRISMA-CLARA spectrometer combined with thick-target - coincidence data from Gammasphere. The d3/2 proton-hole state is located 92 keV above the s1/2 ground state and the proton-particle f7/2 state is suggested at 2104 keV. Three other levels are established as involving the coupling to 2+ of two neutrons above the N = 28 shell. The measured or estimated lifetimes served to reinforce the interpretation of the observed level structure which is found to be in satisfactory agreement with shell model calculations.

Abstract: Lifetimes of low-lying excited states of the neutron-rich 44, 46Ar nuclei, populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, are measured by means of the differential recoil distance Doppler shift method. The extracted electromagnetic transition probabilities are compared with previous intermediate-energy Coulomb-excitation measurements and with large-scale shell-model calculations. The increase in the deduced B(E2 ; 2+→0+) transition probability from 44Ar to the closed-shell nucleus 46Ar contradicts the earlier results of Coulomb-excitation experiments. Shell-model calculations using different effective interactions agree with the new measured values.

Abstract: The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope Dy-168 has been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV Se-82 beam and an Er-170 target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2(+) and 4(+) members of the previously measured ground-state rotational band of Dy-168 have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10(+). A tentative candidate for the 4(+) -> 2(+) transition in Dy-170 was also identified. Abstract: Yrast states up to (6+) in the neutron-rich 40S nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215 MeV beam of 36S ions with a thin 208Pb target. The novel experimental setup that combines the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the high-efficiency γ-ray detection array, CLARA, was used. A new γ-ray transition at an energy of 1572 keV was observed and tentatively assigned to the (6+)→(4+) transition. A comparison of experimental observations and the results of large-scale 0ℏω sd-pf shell-model calculations indicates that one- and two-proton excitations from the 2s1/2 to the 1d3/2 orbitals play an important role in reproducing the 40S yrast level structure and the published B(E2;0g.s.+→21+) value. The structure of the yrast states of the even-A isotopes of sulfur is interpreted in terms of the configurations of valence protons and neutrons within the context of large-scale 0ℏω sd-pf shell-model calculations.

Abstract: The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed., 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract: The energy of the first excited 2+ state in 96Kr was measured as 241 keV. The nucleus was produced in the fission of 238U induced by a 954-MeV 136Xe beam and prompt rays were observed using the clover array CLARA in coincidence with fission products identified with the PRISMA spectrometer. The evolution of the quadrupole collectivity in the Kr isotopes with N50 is discussed by comparison with that from the Rb to Mo isotones and with predictions of various theoretical calculations.

Abstract: The low-lying yrast states in the Ca-51 and Sc-52 nuclei were investigated to obtain information on the evolution of the p(1/2) and f(5/2) neutron single-particle orbitals in neutron-rich nuclei near proton number Z=20. Level structures associated with neutron excitations into these two orbitals and with proton excitations across the Z=20 shell gap were identified. Shell-model calculations with the recently proposed GXPF1A interaction account reasonably well for the fp-shell states. The energy separation between the nu p(1/2) and nu f(5/2) orbitals in the Ca isotopes appears to be overestimated by the GXPF1A Hamiltonian.

Abstract: The neutron-rich Fe isotopes from A=61 to 66 were studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a $^{238}$U target with a 400 MeV $^{64}$Ni beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt $\gamma$ rays belonging to each nucleus was achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data extend our knowledge of the level structure of Fe isotopes, which is discussed in terms of the systematics of the region and compared with large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract: Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient gamma-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. Abstract: Expérience LNL/PRISMA; International audience; The unexplored area of heavy neutron rich nuclei is extremely important for nuclearastrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process ofastrophysical nucleogenesis. For the production of heavy neutron rich nuclei located along theneutron closed shell N=126 (probably the last "waiting point" in the r-process of nucleosynthesis)the low-energy multi-nucleon transfer reaction 136Xe+208Pb at Elab=870MeV was explored.Due to the stabilizing eect of the closed neutron shells in both nuclei, N=82 and N=126, andthe rather favorable proton transfer from lead to xenon, the light fragments formed in this processare well bound and the Q-value of the reaction is nearly zero.Measurements were performed with the PRISMA spectrometer in coincidence with an additionaltime-of-flight (ToF) arm on the +20 beam line of the PIAVE-ALPI accelerator in Legnaro, Italy.The PRISMA spectrometer allows identication of the A, Z and velocity of the projectile-likefragments (PLF), while the second arm gives access to the target-like fragments (TLF).Details on the experimental setup and preliminary results are reported.

Abstract: Conference on Frontiers in Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics, and Reactions -- SEP 10-14, 2007 -- Crete, GREECE, WOS: 000256223700023, Medium and high spin states of the nuclei close to the N=50 shell closure are investigated Using deep inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions. New excited states of the nuclei Ga-81, Ge-82 and As-83 at N=50 shell closure have been identified by means of the Se-82+U-238 reaction. Gamma rays have been acquired using the PRISMA-CLARA setup of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy (LNL)., NCSR, Univ Jyvaskyla, Natl Tech Univ Athens, Greek Minist Educ, U.S. Department of Energy [DE-AC05-00OR22725], I wish to thank the staff of HRIBF for their dedication in the production of RIBs.
