Abstract

Precision measurements of antineutrino elastic scattering on hydrogen from future neutrino experiments offer a unique opportunity to access the low-energy structure of protons and neutrons. We discuss the determination of the nucleon axial-vector form factor and radius from antineutrino interactions on hydrogen that can be collected at the future Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility, and study the sources of theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The projected accuracy would improve existing measurements by $1$ order of magnitude and be competitive with contemporary lattice-QCD determinations, potentially helping to resolve the corresponding tension with measurements from (anti)neutrino elastic scattering on deuterium. We find that the current knowledge of the nucleon vector form factors could be one of the dominant sources of uncertainty. Abstract

A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $\nu_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics and astrophysics measurements. A key requirement for a correct interpretation of these measurements is a good understanding of the energy-dependent total cross section $\sigma(E_\nu)$ for charged-current $\nu_e$ absorption on argon. In the context of a simulated extraction of supernova $\nu_e$ spectral parameters from a toy analysis, we investigate the impact of $\sigma(E_\nu)$ modeling uncertainties on DUNE's supernova neutrino physics sensitivity for the first time. We find that the currently large theoretical uncertainties on $\sigma(E_\nu)$ must be substantially reduced before the $\nu_e$ flux parameters can be extracted reliably: in the absence of external constraints, a measurement of the integrated neutrino luminosity with less than 10\% bias with DUNE requires $\sigma(E_\nu)$ to be known to about 5%. The neutrino spectral shape parameters can be known to better than 10% for a 20% uncertainty on the cross-section scale, although they will be sensitive to uncertainties on the shape of $\sigma(E_\nu)$. A direct measurement of low-energy $\nu_e$-argon scattering would be invaluable for improving the theoretical precision to the needed level., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

We report the results of a new global QCD analysis, which includes deep-inelastic $e/\mu$ scattering data off proton and deuterium, as well as Drell-Yan lepton pair production in proton-proton and proton-deuterium collisions and $W^\pm/Z$ boson production data from $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at the LHC and Tevatron. Nuclear effects in the deuteron are treated in terms of a nuclear convolution approach with bound off-shell nucleons within a weak binding approximation. The off-shell correction is controlled by a universal function of the Bjorken variable $x$ describing the modification of parton distributions in bound nucleons, which is determined in our analysis along with the parton distribution functions of the proton. A number of systematic studies are performed to estimate the uncertainties arising from the use of various deuterium datasets, from the modeling of higher twist contributions to the structure functions, from the treatment of target mass corrections, as well as from the nuclear corrections in the deuteron. We obtain predictions for the ratios $F_2^n/F_2^p$, and $d/u$, focusing on the region of large $x$. Abstract

Spacelike and timelike generalized parton distributions (GPDs) have been investigated in charged-lepton scattering and electron-positron collisions via deeply virtual Compton scattering and two-photon processes, respectively. Furthermore, we expect that hadron-accelerator-facility measurements will be performed in future. The GPDs will play a crucial role in clarifying the origins of hadron spins and masses in terms of quarks and gluons. It is also possible to probe internal pressure within hadrons for understanding their stability. Gravitational form factors of hadrons used to be considered as a purely academic subject because gravitational interactions are too weak to be measured in microscopic systems. However, due to the development of hadron-tomography field, it became possible to extract the gravitational form factors from the actual GPD measurements without relying on direct gravitational interactions. Neutrino reactions can also be used for GPD studies in future, for example, by using the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility at Fermilab. The neutrino GPD measurements are valuable especially for finding the flavor dependence of the GPDs in a complementary way to the charged-lepton experiments. Abstract

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. Abstract

We present a novel method to accurately determine the flux of neutrinos and antineutrinos, one of the dominant systematic uncertainty affecting current and future long-baseline neutrino experiments, as well as precision neutrino scattering experiment. Using exclusive topologies in $\nu(\bar \nu)$-hydrogen interactions, $\nu_\mu p \to \mu^- p \pi^+$, $\bar \nu_\mu p \to \mu^+ p \pi^-$, and $\bar \nu_\mu p \to \mu^+ n$ with small hadronic energy, we achieve an overall accuracy on the relative fluxes better than 1\% in the energy range covering most of the available flux. Since we cannot rely on simulations nor model corrections at this level of precision, we present techniques to constrain all relevant systematic uncertainties using data themselves. The method can be implemented using the approach we recently proposed to collect high statistics samples of $\nu(\bar \nu)$-hydrogen interactions in a low-density and high-resolution detector, which could serve as part of the near detector complex in a long-baseline neutrino experiment, as well as a dedicated beam monitoring detector., Comment: Final version published in PLB (15 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables)

Abstract

The limited statistics of the available (anti)neutrino-hydrogen interactions has been a longstanding impediment for neutrino physics. We propose a practical way to achieve accurate (anti)neutrino-hydrogen measurements, solving the principal limitations of earlier experiments. Interactions on hydrogen are extracted by subtracting measurements on thin dedicated graphite (pure C) and polypropylene (CH$_2$) targets within a highly segmented low-density detector. A statistics of ${\cal O}(10^6)$ can be realistically achieved for the various $\nu(\bar \nu)$-H event topologies, with efficiencies exceeding 90\% and purities around 80-95\%. The availability of such samples allows a determination of neutrino and antineutrino fluxes with precisions better than 1\% using conventional wide-band beams. Furthermore, by contrasting these samples to corresponding measurements on heavy materials, initial and final state nuclear effects can be directly constrained in a model-independent way. The systematic uncertainties associated with both the fluxes and the nuclear smearing are crucial for long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Abstract

We present a detailed study of the (pseudo)rapidity distributions of massive vector bosons produced in p+p and p+Pb collisions at the LHC within the next-to-leading order approximation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In particular, we discuss the impact of different cold nuclear matter effects on this process using the nuclear parton distributions calculated from the microscopic model developed by Kulagin and Petti (KP). This model was successfully applied to study nuclear effects in the deep-inelastic scattering and the Drell-Yan reactions off various (fixed) target nuclei. Results are compared with the recent CMS and ATLAS p+Pb data with \sqrt{s}=5.02 TeV per two colliding nucleons. We found an excellent agreement between the predictions of the KP model and the recent LHC data on W+- and Z0 production in p+Pb collisions, including the differential cross sections, the forward-backward asymmetries, and W charge asymmetry. 13. Structure functions for light nuclei

Abstract

We discuss the nuclear EMC effect with particular emphasis on recent data for light nuclei including 2H, 3He, 4He, 9Be, 12C and 14N. In order to verify the consistency of available data, we calculate the \chi^2 deviation between different data sets. We find a good agreement between the results from the NMC, SLAC E139, and HERMES experiments. However, our analysis indicates an overall normalization offset of about 2% in the data from the recent JLab E03-103 experiment with respect to previous data for nuclei heavier than 3He. We also discuss the extraction of the neutron/proton structure function ratio F2n/F2p from the nuclear ratios 3He/2H and 2H/1H. Our analysis shows that the E03-103 data on 3He/2H require a renormalization of about 3% in order to be consistent with the F2n/F2p ratio obtained from the NMC experiment. After such a renormalization, the 3He data from the E03-103 data and HERMES experiments are in a good agreement. Abstract

We discuss calculation of nuclear corrections to the structure functions for the deep-inelastic scattering of muon and (anti)neutrino. Our approach includes a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as the treatment of Fermi motion and nuclear binding, off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions, nuclear pion excess and nuclear shadowing. We emphasize the dependence of nuclear effects on the type and C-parity of (anti)neutrino structure functions. Abstract

We present a detailed description of high-energy neutrino and antineutrino inelastic inclusive scattering off nuclei in terms of nuclear structure functions. In our approach we take into account a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as a number of basic nuclear effects including nuclear shadowing, Fermi motion and binding, nuclear pion excess and off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions. These effects prove to be important in the studies of charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering. We discuss similarities and dissimilarities in the calculation of nuclear effects for charged-lepton and neutrino scattering caused by nonconserved axial current in neutrino scattering. We examine the Adler and the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules for nuclear structure functions and find a remarkable cancellation between nuclear shadowing and off-shell corrections in these sum rules. We present calculations of differential cross sections for inclusive neutrino and antineutrino scattering in comparison with recent data on different target materials., Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures; final version to appear in Phys. Abstract

We present the results of a phenomenological study of unpolarized nuclear structure functions for a wide kinematical region of x and Q^2. As a basis of our phenomenology we develop a model which takes into account a number of different nuclear effects including nuclear shadowing, Fermi motion and binding, nuclear pion excess and off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions. Within this approach we perform a statistical analysis of available data on the ratio of the nuclear structure functions F_2 for different nuclei in the range from the deuteron to the lead. We express the off-shell effect and the effective scattering amplitude describing nuclear shadowing in terms of few parameters which are common to all nuclei and have a clear physical interpretation. The parameters are then extracted from statistical analysis of data. As a result, we obtain an excellent overall agreement between our calculations and data in the entire kinematical region of x and Q^2.
