Abstract

New data on the production of single neutral pions in the $pd\rightarrow{}^3\textrm{He}\,\pi^0$ reaction are presented. For fifteen proton beam momenta between $p_p=1.60\;\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $p_p=1.74\;\textrm{GeV}/c$, differential cross sections are determined over a large fraction of the backward hemisphere. Since the only previous systematic measurements of single-pion production at these energies were made in collinear kinematics, the present work constitutes a significant extension of the current knowledge on this reaction. Abstract

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of $\eta$ mesons in proton-deuteron fusion to ${}^3\text{He}\,\eta$ in the excess energy region $13.6\;\text{MeV}\leq Q_\eta \leq 80.9\;\text{MeV}$ are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between $p_p = 1.60\;\text{GeV}/c$ and $p_p = 1.74\;\text{GeV}/c$. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region $20\;\text{MeV}\lesssim Q_\eta \lesssim 60\;\text{MeV}$, a previously reported sharp variation around $Q_\eta\approx 50\;\text{MeV}$ cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. Abstract

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} pp{\eta} has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q = 72 MeV the data reveals strong interference of P s and P p partial waves and cancellation of (P p) and Ss*Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the {\eta} meson., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an η meson and 3He nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the η-mesic nucleus decay, the pd→ 3He2γ and pd→ 3He6γ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of η meson bound in 3He nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an 3He-η nucleus width Γ above 20 MeV and binding energy Bs between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the η-mesic 3He nucleus formation followed by the η meson decay which varies between 2 nb and 15 nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

Abstract

The excitation function for the $pd\rightarrow$ $d p ��^{0}$ reaction has been measured by WASA-at-COSY experiment with the aim of searching for $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$��$ mesic nuclei. The measurement in the vicinity of $��$ meson production was performed using a ramped proton beam. The data analysis and interpretation was carried out with the assumption that the $��$-mesic Helium decays via the formation of an intermediate N$^{*}$(1535) resonance. No direct signal of the $��$-mesic nucleus is observed in the excitation function. We determine a new improved upper limit for the total cross section for the bound state production and decay in the $pd\rightarrow$ $(^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$��)_{bound} \rightarrow$ $d p ��^{0}$ process. It varies between 13 nb to 24 nb for the bound state with width in the range $��\in (5,50)$ MeV.

Abstract

This letter reports a first quantitative analysis of the contribution of higher partial waves in the charge symmetry breaking reaction dd→4Heπ0 using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup at an excess energy of Q=60MeV. The determined differential cross section can be parametrized as dσ/dΩ=a+bcos2⁡θ⁎, where θ⁎ is the production angle of the pion in the center-of-mass coordinate system, and the results for the parameters are a=(1.55±0.46(stat)+0.32−0.8(syst))pb/sr and b=(13.1±2.1(stat)−2.7+1.0(syst))pb/sr. The data are compatible with vanishing p-waves and a sizable d-wave contribution. This finding should strongly constrain the contribution of the Δ isobar to the dd→4Heπ0 reaction and is, therefore, crucial for a quantitative understanding of quark mass effects in nuclear production reactions. Abstract

The PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one ofthe four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR(Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. PANDA willaddress fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamicsusing high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2× 10^32 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particleidentification (PID) is crucial to the success of the PANDA physics program.Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by afast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflectedCherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle rangefrom 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/Kseparation up to 3.5GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final statekaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes thetechnical design and the expected performance of the PANDA Barrel DIRCdetector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several keyimprovements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detaileddetector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beamsat GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/Kseparation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in theBarrel DIRC.

Abstract

Differential cross section for the 1H(d,pp)n breakup reaction at deuteron beam energy of 340 MeV has been measured with the use of WASA detector at COSY-Juelich. The set of proton-proton coincidences registered at Forward Detector has been analysed on dense grid of kinematic variables, giving in total around 5600 data points. The cross section data are compared to theoretical predictions based on the state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials, combined with three-nucleon force, Coulomb interaction or carried out in a relativistic regime.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pp \to pp\pi^+\pi^-$ reaction have been carried out at WASA@COSY by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been extracted covering the energy region $T_p = 1.08 - 1.36$ GeV, which is the region of $N^*(1440)$ and $\Delta(1232)\Delta(1232)$ resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by $t$-channel meson exchange are at variance with the measured differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the experimental total cross section. An isotensor $\Delta N$ dibaryon resonance with $I(J^P) = 2(1^+)$ produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1803.03192

Abstract

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) observables are a suitable experimental tool to examine effects induced by quark masses on the nuclear level. Previous high precision data from TRIUMF and IUCF are currently used to develop a consistent description of CSB within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. In this work the experimental studies on the reaction dd→He4π0 have been extended towards higher excess energies in order to provide information on the contribution of p-waves in the final state. For this, an exclusive measurement has been carried out at a beam momentum of pd=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section amounts to σtot=(118±18stat±13sys±8ext) pb and first data on the differential cross section are consistent with s-wave pion production. Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to pp\pi^-$ and $pp \to pp\pi^0$ reactions have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $T_p = 0.95 - 1.3$ GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.3 - 2.46 GeV), which includes the regions of $\Delta(1232)$, $N^*(1440)$ and $d^*(2380)$ resonance excitations. From these measurements the isoscalar single-pion production has been extracted, for which data existed so far only below $T_p$ = 1 GeV. We observe a substantial increase of this cross section above 1 GeV, which can be related to the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$, the strength of which shows up isolated from the $\Delta$ resonance in the isoscalar $(N\pi)_{I=0}$ invariant-mass spectrum. No evidence for a decay of the dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ into the isoscalar $(NN\pi)_{I=0}$ channel is found. An upper limit of 90 $\mu$b (90 $\%$ C.L.) corresponding to a branching ratio of 5 $\%$ has been deduced., Comment: erratum: the upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $d^*(2380) \to (NN\pi)_{I=0}$ is a factor of two smaller than given in the previous version of this article

Abstract

Various theoretical calculations based on QCD or hadronic interactions predict that in addition to the recently observed dibaryon resonance d⁎(2380) with I(JP)=0(3+) there should also exist a dibaryon resonance with mirrored quantum numbers I(JP)=3(0+). We report here on a search for such a NN-decoupled state in data on the pp→ppπ+π+π−π− reaction. Since no clear-cut evidence has been found, we give upper limits for the production cross section of such a resonance in the mass range 2280–2500 MeV.

Abstract

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction over the energy region of the d (*)(2380) resonance by use of a polarized deuteron beam and observing the double fusion reaction in the quasifree scattering mode. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal substantial analyzing powers and confirm conclusions about the d(*) resonance obtained from unpolarized measurements. We also confirm the previous unpolarized data obtained under complementary kinematic conditions.

Abstract

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) observables are a suitable experimental tool to examine effects induced by quark masses on the nuclear level. Previous high precision data from TRIUMF and IUCF are currently used to develop a consistent description of CSB within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. In this work the experimental studies on the reaction dd->4He{\pi}0 have been extended towards higher excess energies in order to provide information on the contribution of p-waves in the final state. For this, an exclusive measurement has been carried out at a beam momentum of p=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section amounts to sigma(tot) = (118 +- 18(stat) +- 13(sys) +- 8(ext)) pb and first data on the differential cross section are consistent with s-wave pion production., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

New data on quasifree polarized neutron-proton scattering in the region of the recently observed $d^{\ast}$ resonance structure are obtained by exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements with WASA at COSY. This paper details the determination of the beam polarization, checks of the quasifree character of the scattering process, on all obtained $A_{y}$ angular distributions and on the new partial-wave analysis, which includes the new data producing a resonance pole in $^{3}D_{3}−^{3}G_{3}$ coupled partial waves at (2380 $\pm$ 10−i40 $\pm$ 5) MeV—in accordance with the $d^{\ast}$ dibaryon resonance hypothesis. The effect of the new partial-wave solution on the description of total and differential cross-section data as well as specific combinations of spin-correlation and spin-transfer observables available from COSY-ANKE measurements at $T_{d}$=2.27 GeV is discussed.

Abstract

Associative photoproduction of $\omega$-meson and $N^{*}(1440)$ on nucleons, $\gamma+N\to\omega+N^{*}(1440)$, in the near threshold region is investigated in a framework employing effective Lagrangians. Besides $\pi$-exchange in t-channel, baryon exchanges, i.e. N- and $N^{*}$-exchanges, in the s- and u-channels are also taken into account in calculations of differential cross-section and beam asymmetry. Important inputs of this model are the vector and tensor coupling constants of $\omega NN^{*}(1440)$-vertex, which are assumed to be equal to the values of these couplings for $\omega NN$ vertex. Using our previous estimation of $\omega NN$ coupling constants obtained from a fit to available experimental data on photoproduction of $\omega$ meson in the near threshold region, we produce the necessary numerical predictions for different observables in $\gamma+N\to\omega+N^{*}(1440)$. Numerical results shows that at low $|$t$|$ dominant contribution comes from t-channel $\pi$-exchange while effects of nucleon and $N^{*}(1440)$ pole terms can be seen at large $|t|$. Our predictions for the differential cross section and beam asymmetry for the processes $\gamma+N\to\omega+N^{*}(1440)$, where N is proton and neutron at $E_{\gamma}=2.5$ GeV are presented with zero width approximation and also with the inclusion of width effects of $N^{*}(1440)$.

Abstract

A large set of high precision cross sections, vector A(x), A(y) and tensor A(xx), A(xy), A(yy) analyzing powers for the H-1((d) over right arrow , pp)n breakup reaction were measured at 130 MeV beam energy with the detection system covering a large part of the phase space. Results are compared with rigorous theoretical calculations employing various models of the three-nucleon system dynamics. The cross section data allowed to establish evidence for three-nucleon force contributions and to confirm predictions of sizable effect of the Coulomb force in the breakup reaction. Analyzing power data are generally quite well described by theoretical predictions even with pure NN interactions. However, in some regions discrepancies has been observed for tensor analyzing powers, only rarely cured by inclusion of the three nucleon force. This indicates incompletness of the present-day treatment of the spin part of three nucleon system dynamics.

Abstract

In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pions was studied using 1.2e5 fully reconstructed events, and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027+/-0.008(stat)+/-0.005(syst). Abstract

High precision vector and tensor analyzing power data of the deuteron-proton elastic scattering at 130 MeV deuteron beam energy have been measured in a large range of angles. They are compared with theoretical predictions obtained in various approaches: with realistic potentials for pure NN interactions, with the inclusion of a three-nucleon force, and in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. All the theoretical calculations describe roughly the main features of the measured distributions, but none of them can reproduce all their details. This indicates the need for further development of the three-nucleon force models.

Abstract

A measurement of the analyzing powers for the 1H(~d, pp)n breakup reaction at 130MeV polarized deuteron beam energy was carried out at KVI Groningen. The experimental setup covered a large fraction of the phase space. Obtained tensor analyzing powers T22 for selected kinematical configurations have been compared to theoretical predictions based on various approaches: the rigorous Faddeev calculations using the realistic nucleon–nucleon potentials with and without three nucleon force (3NF) models, predictions of the chiral perturbation theory, and coupled channel calculations with the explicit degrees of freedom. In the presented configurations the results of all predictions are very close to one another and there are no significant 3NF influences. Not all of the data can be satisfactory reproduced by the theoretical calculations.

Obtained tensor analyzing powers T-22 for selected kinematical configurations have been compared to theoretical predictions based on various approaches: the rigorous Faddeev calculations using the realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials with and without three nucleon force (3NF) models, predictions of the chiral perturbation theory, and coupled channel calculations with the explicit Delta degrees of freedom. In the presented configurations the results of all predictions are very close to one another and there are no significant 3NF influences. Not all of the data can be satisfactory reproduced by the theoretical calculations.
