The longitudinal asymmetry induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in the charge-exchange reaction He-3(n-polarized, p)H-3 at vanishing incident neutron energies. An expression for the PV observable is derived in terms of T-matrix elements for transitions from the L-2S+1(J) = S-1(0) and S-3(1) states in the incoming n-He-3 channel to states with J = 0 and 1 in the outgoing p-H-3 channel. The T-matrix elements involving PV transitions are obtained in first-order perturbation theory in the hadronic weak-interaction potential, while those connecting states of the same parity are derived from solutions of the strong-interaction Hamiltonian with the hyperspherical-harmonics method. The coupled-channel nature of the scattering problem is fully accounted for. Results are obtained corresponding to realistic or chiral two-and three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. The asymmetries, predicted with PV pion and vector-meson coupling constants corresponding (essentially) to the DDH "best values" set, range from -9.44 to -2.48 in units of 10(-8), depending on the input strong-interaction Hamiltonian. This large model dependence is a consequence of cancellations between long-range (pion) and short-range (vector-meson) contributions and is of course sensitive to the assumed values for the PV coupling constants.

Recently, we have derived a two nucleon potential and consistent nuclear electromagnetic currents in chiral effective field theory with pions and nucleons as explicit degrees of freedom The calculation of the currents has been carried out to include (NLO)-L-3 corrections, consisting of two-pion exchange and contact contributions The latter involve unknown low-energy constants (LECs), some of which have been fixed by fitting the up S- and P-wave phase shifts up to 100 MeV lab energies The remaining LECs entering the current operator are determined so as to reproduce the experimental deuteron and trinucleon magnetic moments, as well as the rip cross section This electromagnetic current operator is utilized to study the mid and n(3)He radiative captures at thermal neutron energies Here we discuss our results stressing on the important role played by the LECs in reproducing the experimental data

It is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies using the available two-nucleon potentials. This is one manifestation of the need to include a three- nucleon force in the corresponding Hamiltonian. In this paper we will analyze the capability of a three- nucleon force model to describe not only the aforementioned binding energies but also some N - d low energy scattering observables.

The neutron spin rotation induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in n-polarized - d scattering at zero energy. Results are obtained corresponding to the Argonne v(18) two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the Desplanques-Donoghue-Holstein or pionless effective field theory models for the weak-interaction potential. We find that this observable is dominated by the contribution of the long-range part of the PV potential associated with pion exchange. Thus its measurement could provide a further constraint, complementary to that coming from measurements of the photon asymmetry in n-polarized - p radiative capture, on the strength of this component of the hadronic weak interaction.

In order to isolate the contribution of the nucleon strange electric form factor to the parity-violating asymmetry measured in He-4(e,e('))He-4 experiments, it is crucial to have a reliable estimate of the magnitude of isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) corrections in both the nucleon and He-4. We examine this issue in the present Letter. Isospin admixtures in the nucleon are determined in chiral perturbation theory, while those in He-4 are derived from nuclear interactions, including explicit ISB terms. A careful analysis of the model dependence in the resulting predictions for the nucleon and nuclear ISB contributions to the asymmetry is carried out. We conclude that, at the low momentum transfers of interest in recent measurements reported by the HAPPEX Collaboration at Jefferson Lab, these contributions are of comparable magnitude to those associated with strangeness components in the nucleon electric form factor.

We describe the calculation of the pi-nucleus optical potential to NLO in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) within a new formulation of the effective theory in the presence of a nuclear background, characterized by a static, non-uniform distribution of the baryon number, describing the finite nucleus. This formulation reduces to the conventional In-medium ChPT in the case of a uniform distribution. In this way we are able to identify unambiguously the nuclear finite size effects and disentangle the S-, P- and D-wave contributions to the optical potential without invoking the local density approximation.

In chiral effective field theory the leading order (LO) nucleon-nucleon potential includes two contact terms, in the two spin channels $S=0,1$, and the one-pion-exchange potential. When the pion degrees of freedom are integrated out, as in the pionless effective field theory, the LO potential includes two contact terms only. In the three-nucleon system, the pionless theory includes a three-nucleon contact term interaction at LO whereas the chiral effective theory does not. Accordingly arbitrary differences could be observed in the LO description of three- and four-nucleon binding energies. We analyze the two theories at LO and conclude that a three-nucleon contact term is necessary at this order in both theories. In turn this implies that subleading three-nucleon contact terms should be promoted to lower orders. Furthermore this analysis shows that one single low energy constant might be sufficient to explain the large values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths., 5 pages, 3 figures

We construct a coordinate-space chiral potential, including $\Delta$-isobar intermediate states in its two-pion-exchange component. The contact interactions entering at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading orders ($Q^2$ and $Q^4$, respectively, $Q$ denoting generically the low momentum scale) are rearranged by Fierz transformations to yield terms at most quadratic in the relative momentum operator of the two nucleons. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database, consisting of 2309 $pp$ and 2982 $np$ data (including, respectively, 148 and 218 normalizations) in the laboratory-energy range 0--300 MeV. For the total 5291 $pp$ and $np$ data in this range, we obtain a $\chi^2$/datum of roughly 1.3 for a set of three models characterized by long- and short-range cutoffs, $R_{\rm L}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ respectively, ranging from $(R_{\rm L},R_{\rm S})=(1.2,0.8)$ fm down to $(0.8,0.6)$ fm. We reconsider the derivation of the nucleon-nucleon parity-violating (PV) potential within a chiral effective field theory framework. We construct the potential up to next-to-next-to-leading order by including one-pion-exchange, two-pion-exchange, contact, and 1/M (M being the nucleon mass) terms, and use dimensional regularization to renormalize the pion-loop corrections. A detailed analysis of the number of independent low-energy constants (LEC's) entering the potential is carried out. We find that it depends on six LEC's: the pion-nucleon PV coupling constant $h^1_\pi$ and five parameters multiplying contact interactions. We investigate PV effects induced by this potential on several few-nucleon observables, including the $\vec{p}$-$p$ longitudinal asymmetry, the neutron spin rotation in $\vec{n}$-$p$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ scattering, and the longitudinal asymmetry in the $^3$He$(\vec{n},p)^3$H charge-exchange reaction. We review our recent work on the derivation of the nuclear electromagnetic charge and current operators in chiral perturbation theory, based on time-ordered perturbation theory. We then discuss the strategies for fixing the relevant low energy constants, and compare the resulting predictions for the electric and magnetic form factors of the deuteron and trinucleons with experimental data, using as input accurate nuclear wave functions derived with realistic potentials.

The objectives of the present work are twofold. The first is to address and resolve some of the differences present in independent, chiral-effective-field-theory (\chiEFT) derivations up to one loop, recently appeared in the literature, of the nuclear charge and current operators. The second objective is to provide a complete set of \chiEFT predictions for the structure functions and tensor polarization of the deuteron, for the charge and magnetic form factors of 3He and 3H, and for the charge and magnetic radii of these few-nucleon systems. The calculations use wave functions derived from high-order chiral two- and three-nucleon potentials and Monte Carlo methods to evaluate the relevant matrix elements. Predictions based on conventional potentials in combination with \chiEFT charge and current operators are also presented. There is excellent agreement between theory and experiment for all these observables for momentum transfers up to q< 2.0-2.5 (1/fm); for a subset of them, this agreement extends to momentum transfers as high as q~5-6 (1/fm). A satisfactory description of bound and scattering states of the three-nucleon (3N) system is still lacking, contrary to what happens in the two-nucleon case. In the framework of chiral effective theory, it is possible that a realistic 3N interaction will require the inclusion of subleading contact terms, which are unconstrained by chiral symmetry. We construct the minimal 3N contact Lagrangian imposing all constraints from the discrete symmetries, Fierz identities and Poincar\'e covariance, and show that it consists of 10 independent operators. By integrating out the pions from the effective theory we derive the pion-induced contributions to the corresponding low-energy constants (LECs), and find no clear signal of convergence of the pionful theory between N2LO and N3LO., Comment: 6 pages, presented at the Sixth International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics, April 16-20, 2012. The effect of the inclusion of different models of three nucleon (3N) forces in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies is studied. Two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We obtain a minimal form of the two-derivative three-nucleon contact Lagrangian, by imposing all constraints deriving from discrete symmetries, Fierz identities and Poincare' covariance. The resulting interaction, depending on 13 unknown low-energy constants, leads to a three-nucleon potential which we give in a local form in configuration space. We also consider the leading (no-derivative) four-nucleon interaction and show that there exists only one independent operator., 11 pages. Parity violation in few-nucleon systems is studied using a nucleon-nucleon parityviolating (PV) potential derived within an effective field theory framework at next-to-next-toleading order. The potential includes one- and two-pion exchanges, contact interactions and relativistic corrections and depends on six low-energy constants: the pion-nucleon coupling constant h1π and five parameters multiplying the independent contact interaction terms (with one four-gradient). This potential is used to study the p(polarized)-p longitudinal asymmetry, the neutron spin rotation in n(polarized)-d scattering, and the longitudinal asymmetry in the 3He(n-polarized, p)3H reaction.

We construct the most general, relativistically invariant, contact Lagrangian at order Q^2 in the power counting, Q denoting the low momentum scale. A complete, but non-minimal, set of (contact) interaction terms is identified, which upon non-relativistic reduction generate 2 leading independent operator combinations of order Q^0 and 7 sub-leading ones of order Q^2 - a result derived previously in the heavy-baryon formulation of effective field theories (EFT's). We show that Poincare covariance of the theory requires that additional terms with fixed coefficients be included, in order to describe the two-nucleon potential in reference frames other than the center-of-mass frame. These terms will contribute in systems with mass number A>2, and their impact on EFT calculations of binding energies and scattering observables in these systems should be studied., 17 pages, 1 eps figure

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we will perform a comparative study of some, widely used, three-nucleon force models. We will analyze their capability to describe the aforementioned binding energies as well as the $n-d$ doublet scattering length. A correct description of these quantities can be considered a stringent requirement for a nuclear Hamiltonian containing two- and three-nucleon interaction terms. As we will show, this requirement is not fulfilled by several of the models available in the literature. To satisfy it, we propose modifications in the parametrization of the three-nucleon forces and we study their effects on few selected $N-d$ low energy scattering observables., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

We summarize our recent work dealing with the construction of the nucleon-nucleon potential and associated electromagnetic currents up to one loop in chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT). The magnetic dipole operators derived from these currents are then used in hybrid calculations of static properties and low-energy radiative capture processes in few-body nuclei. A two-nucleon potential and consistent electromagnetic currents are derived in chiral effective field theory $(\ensuremath{\chi}\mathrm{EFT})$ at, respectively, ${Q}^{2}$ (or ${\mathrm{N}}^{2}\mathrm{LO}$) and $eQ$ (or ${\mathrm{N}}^{3}\mathrm{LO}$), where $Q$ generically denotes the low-momentum scale and $e$ is the electric charge. Dimensional regularization is used to renormalize the pion-loop corrections. A simple expression is derived for the magnetic dipole $(M1)$ operator associated with pion loops, consisting of two terms, one of which is determined, uniquely, by the isospin-dependent part of the two-pion-exchange potential. This decomposition is also carried out for the $M1$ operator arising from contact currents, in which the unique term is determined by the contact potential. Finally, the low-energy constants entering the ${\mathrm{N}}^{2}\mathrm{LO}$ potential are fixed by fits to the $\mathit{np}$ $S$- and $P$-wave phase shifts up to 100 MeV laboratory energies.

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the descritpion on A = 3, 4 nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies. This is one manifestation of the need to include a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we will analyze the parametrization of some three-nucleon force models and their capability to describe simultaneously the aforementioned binding energies and selected N − d low energy scattering observables.

The application of the hyperspherical harmonic approach to the case of the N-d scattering problem below deuteron breakup threshold is described. The nuclear Hamiltonian includes two- and three-nucleon interactions, in particular the Argonne v_{18}, the N3LO-Idaho, and the V_{low k} two-nucleon, and the Urbana IX and N2LO three-nucleon interactions. Some of these models are local, some are non-local. Also electromagnetic effects are included. Accurate calculations for many scattering observables at various center-of-mass energies are performed and the results are compared with the available experimental data. Furthermore, a \chi^2 analysis of some of the Hamiltonian models has been performed to compare their capability to describe the scattering process., Comment: 40 pages, 18 figures

The hyperspherical harmonic (HH) method has been widely applied in recent times to the study of the bound states, using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle, and of low-energy scattering processes, using the Kohn variational principle, of A=3 and 4 nuclear systems. When the wave function of the system is expanded over a sufficiently large set of HH basis functions, containing or not correlation factors, quite accurate results can be obtained for the observables of interest. In this paper, the main aspects of the method are discussed together with its application to the A=3 and 4 nuclear bound and zero-energy scattering states. Results for a variety of nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) local or non-local interactions are reported. In particular, NN and 3N interactions derived in the framework of the chiral effective field theory and NN potentials from which the high momentum components have been removed, as recently presented in the literature, are considered for the first time within the context of the HH method. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to present a complete description of the HH method for bound and scattering states, including also detailed formulas for the computation of the matrix elements of the NN and 3N interactions. Second, to report accurate results for bound and zero-energy scattering states obtained with the most commonly used interaction models. These results can be useful for comparison with those obtained by other techniques and are a significant test for different future approaches to such problems., 51 pages

The application of the hyperspherical harmonic approach to the case of non-local two-body potentials is described. Given the properties of the hyperspherical harmonic functions, there are no difficulties in considering the approach in both coordinate and momentum space. The binding energies and other ground state properties of A=3 and 4 nuclei are calculated using the CD Bonn 2000 and N3LO two-body potentials. We propose a novel way to formulate Chiral Perturbation Theory in a nuclear background, characterized by a static, non-uniform distribution of the baryon number that describes the finite nucleus. In the limiting case of a uniform distribution, the theory reduces to the well-known zero-temperature in-medium ChPT. The proposed approach is used to calculate the self-energy of the charged pion in the background of the heavy nucleus at O(p^5) in the chiral expansion, and to derive the leading terms of the pion-nucleus optical potential., 42 pages, Latex, 4 Postscript figures

We derive the minimal form of the two-derivative three-nucleon contact interaction by imposing all constraints from discrete symmetries and Fierz identities. In order to comply with the requirements of Poincare' covariance, a basis of operators depending on relative momenta is used. The resulting interaction depends on 10 unknown low-energy constants and leads to a three-nucleon potential which we give in local form in coordinate space.

The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique are applied to study p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. Preliminary results obtained using several interaction models are reported. The calculations are compared to a recent phase shift analysis performed at the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory and to the available experimental data. We describe our method for deriving the nuclear electromagnetic charge and current operators in chiral perturbation theory, based on time-ordered perturbation theory.
