Abstract: Background: The nuclear shape is a macroscopic feature of an atomic nucleus that is sensitive to the underlying nuclear structure in terms of collectivity and the interaction between nucleons. Therefore, the evolution of nuclear shapes has attracted many theoretical and experimental nuclear structure studies. The structure of the A≈70, N≈Z nuclei, lying far from the stability line, is interesting because a particularly strong proton-neutron correlation may occur here due to the occupation of the same orbits by nucleons of both types. In this region, different particle configurations drive a nucleus towards various deformed shapes: prolate, oblate, octupole, or nonaxial. These nuclear shapes change rapidly with nucleon number and also with angular momentum. This is reflected by a presence of different structures (bands) of excited states which exhibit a broad range of lifetimes. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to determine lifetimes of some high-spin excited states in As69 and Ge66 nuclei to examine the shape evolution in these neutron-deficient nuclei. Methods: Lifetimes of high-spin states in As69 and Ge66 have been measured by using the Doppler-shift attenuation technique with the GASP and recoil filter detector setup at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The nuclei of interest were produced in the S32(95MeV)+0.8mg/cm2 Ca40 fusion-evaporation reaction. The strongest reaction channels 3p and α2p led to the As69 and Ge66 final nuclei, respectively. Using γ-γ-recoil coincidences we were able to determine very short lifetimes (in the femtosecond range) in the residual nuclei of interest. The strongest reaction channels 3p and α 2 p led to the 69 As and 66 Ge final nuclei, respectively. Using γ − γ -recoil coincidences we were able to determine very short lifetimes (in the femtosecond range) in the residual nuclei of interest. Results: In 69 As , the extracted lifetimes are τ = 72 ( − 32 , +45 ) fs for the 33 / 2 + state at 7897 keV and τ < 85 fs for the 37 / 2 + state at 9820 keV. For the 66 Ge case, the lifetime of the 11 − state at 7130 keV is τ = 122 ( ± 41 ) fs. Lifetimes in 69 As and 66 Ge reported in this paper have been measured for the first time in the present experiment. Conclusions: The results are discussed in the terms of deformation and shape evolution in 69 As and 66 Ge . The quadrupole moments deduced from the measured lifetimes were compared with the cranked Woods-Saxon-Strutinsky calculations by means of the total Routhian surface method. It turns out that Band 3 in 69 As shows an oblate-prolate shape transition, and above spin 33 / 2 + it corresponds to a prolate collective structure with β 2 ≈ 0.27 and γ ≈ 20 ∘ . In turn, in 66 Ge the negative-parity band built on the 7− state at 4205 keV corresponds to a triaxial shape with β 2 = 0.33 and γ = 31 ∘ . Analysis of the transitional quadrupole moments derived from the experimental and theoretical ones points to a significant change of deformation in the 69 As and 66 Ge nuclei with increasing rotational frequency.

Abstract: International audience; Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se80,82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (61+) and (81+) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 41+ state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 61+ state and the yrare 42+ state and lifetime limits of the yrast (101+) state and of the 51− state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract: The 50 � N,Z � 82 region of the Segrè chart, spanning the nuclei “northwest” of doubly-magic 132Sn, is an intriguing study ground to test the suitability and predictive power of nuclear models at both low and high spins. Low-spin excited states in the nearly spherical nuclei near proton- and neutronshell closures are well described as anharmonic vibrations [1] with a gradual change to rotational structures further away from the closed shells. Further on, quasiparticle excitations play a key role and are responsible for the presence of yrast-trap isomers. These long-lived states interrupt and fragment the decay flux in spectroscopic investigations. High-j couplings involving the unique-parity h11/2 neutron-hole orbital give rise to a wealth of high-spin states with multi-quasiparticle character. In particular, detailed knowledge of isomers is crucial to ascertain the active quasiparticle configurations in the specific nucleus.

6. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich platinum isotope 200Pt toward the N = 126 shell gap

Abstract: The neutron-rich nucleus \nucleus{200}{Pt} is investigated via in-beam \gamma-ray spectroscopy in order to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N = 126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction \nucleus{198}{Pt}(\nucleus{82}{Se}, \nucleus{80}{Se})\nucleus{200}{Pt} is used to populate excited states of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects \gamma rays coincident with the \nucleus{80}{Se} recoils, the binary partner of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The binary partner method is applied to extract the \gamma-ray transitions and build the level scheme of \nucleus{200}{Pt}. The level at 1884\,keV reported by Yates et. al [Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889] was confirmed to be at 1882.1\,keV and assigned as the (6^+_1) state. An additional \gamma ray was found and it presumably de-excites the (8^+_1) state. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even \nucleus{190-204}{Pt} isotopes, revealing that \nucleus{200}{Pt} marks the transition from the \gamma-unstable behaviour of lighter Pt nuclei towards a more spherical one when approaching the N=126 shell closure.

Abstract: The isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) γ decay was measured in the compound nuclei 80Zr and 81Rb at an excitation energy of E∗=54 MeV. The fusion reaction 40Ca+40Ca at Ebeam=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 80Zr, while the reaction 37Cl+44Ca at Ebeam=95 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 81Rb at the same excitation energy. The IVGDR parameters extracted from the analysis were compared with the ones found at higher excitation energy (E∗=83 MeV). The comparison allows one to observe two different nuclear mechanisms: (i) the IVGDR intrinsic width remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 81Rb; (ii) the isospin-violating spreading width (i.e., Coulomb spreading width) remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 80Zr. The experimental setup used for the γ-ray detection was composed by the AGATA demonstrator array coupled to the large-volume LaBr3:Ce detectors of the HECTOR+ array. ispartof: Physical Review C vol:95 issue:1 status: published

Abstract: International audience; The structure of the S33 nucleus was investigated in the Mg24(N14,αp) fusion-evaporation reaction using a 40-MeV N14 beam. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of 11.7 MeV and spin 19/2+. Lifetimes of the intermediate- and high-spin states have been investigated by the Doppler shift attenuation method. Data were compared with different shell-model calculations where effective interactions involving two main shells, the sd and the fp, are used.

Abstract: WOS: 000310091000001, The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. 10. Nuclear spectroscopy near the proton drip line in the lanthanide region: The122La nucleus

Abstract: One of the most exciting subjects in contemporary nuclear physics is the study of nuclei at the limits of stability with respect to particle emission. Recently, there has been an intensive experimental activity in measuring proton decay and a large variety of proton emitters were observed in the region of nuclei with 50 < Z < 82. Very recently, the proton radioactivity from 117La and 121Pr has been identified and the decay rate deviates significantly from calculations assuming spherical configurations, thus indicating the onset of large deformations in the drip line nuclei below Z = 69. Predictions by the microscopicmacroscopicmass model and by relativistic mean field calculations support these experimental results and suggest the position of the proton drip line. The lifetimes of the proton-decaying isomers are extremely sensitive to the orbital angular momentum ` of the emitted proton and can vary over several orders of magnitude when changing the angular momentum of the occupied orbital. The position of certain orbitals at the Fermi surface depends strongly on the beta2 deformation. It is therefore very important to determine the quadrupole deformation of the nuclei at and beyond the proton drip line, in order to locate the orbitals close to the Fermi surface and to estimate the lifetime of the isomers, which is essential when looking for new proton emitters. The deformation of the nuclei at the proton drip line in the A 130 mass region can be experimentally tested by comparing the lifetimes of proton emitters with theoretical predictions and by investigating the level structure of particle bound nuclei close to the drip line. For Z = 57 the proton drip line is predicted to correspond to the isotope 118La. The lightest La nucleus for which spectroscopic information has been published is 124La . This thesis bescribes an experiment realised to identify for the first time excited states of the doubly-odd nucleus 122 57 La65. Another aspect that make particularly interesting a study of these nuclei is a well-established phenomenon in two-quasiparticle rotational bands in odd-odd nuclei: the signature inversion. Despite the observation of signature inversion in many different nuclei, and numerous theoretical interpretations, a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon has yet to be found. We want verify if the experimental level scheme of 122La is in agreement with the systematics of the other nuclei in this mass region. The common feature relating the studies of these neutron deficient nuclei is that they are populated with extremely low cross section and require special techniques to be identified. The standard efficient way to achieve this is the use of arrays of high-purity germanium detectors coupled to specific ancillary devices for their selection. Our experiment has been performed at the Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL) where heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction 40Ca(@ 200 MeV)+92Mo was performed to establish the scheme of 122La by using the GASP -ray spectrometer in conjunction with the ancillary charged-particle ISIS detector and the Neutron Ring. This experimental set-up led to numerous achievements in the A 130 mass region. Chapter 1 introduces to the physics of the nuclei close and beyond to the proton drip-line. In Chapter 2 we will briey see the various theoretical models created to describe several types of nuclear excitations and discuss in more detail the cranking model. Chapter 3 describes the experimental techniques of -ray spectroscopy and the setup used for the present measurement. In Chapter 4 the steps followed in the sorting of the raw data to produce particle-gated matrices are described, together with the techniques used to select the different reaction channels and to clean the spectra. Chapter 5 shows the systematic features of the rotational bands of the A 130 proton rich odd-odd nuclei. Chapter 6 will be devoted to the construction of the decay scheme and to the spins assignments, performed through the analysis of gated matrices, transition intensities, DCO, and the comparison with the systematics of the La isotopes. Finally, in Chapter 7, the results are discussed in the light of the deduced experimental quantities like single-particle spin alignment, dynamic moments of inertia, signature splitting, and B(M1)=B(E2) branching ratios to assign the Nilsson orbitals to the found bands.

Abstract: International audience; The isospin mixing was deduced in the compound nucleus Zr-80 at an excitation energy of E* = 54 MeV from the gamma decay of the giant dipole resonance. The reaction Ca-40 + Ca-40 at E-beam = 136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus in the isospin I = 0 channel, while the reaction Cl-37 + Ca-44 at E-beam = 95 MeV was used as the reference reaction. The. rays were detected with the AGATA demonstrator array coupled with LaBr3:Ce detectors. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing was obtained and the zero-temperature value deduced. The isospin-symmetry-breaking correction delta(C) used for the Fermi superallowed transitions was extracted and found to be consistent with beta-decay data.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all.Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange.Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in a high-resolution gamma-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber.Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the GRAZING model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA.Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z = 93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes.

Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange. Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in 136Xe+238U have been measured in a high-resolution γ-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber. Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the grazing model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA. Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z=93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the −2p channel populating Th isotopes.

Abstract: International audience; The level structure of the neutron-rich 69Cu, 71Cu, and 73Cu isotopes has been investigated by means ofmultinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using theAGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states inCu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrixelements for transitions from excited states in 69,71,73Cu nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particlecharacter of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, givingfurther insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g9/2 orbital.

Abstract: International audience; 2+ and 1− states in Zr90 were populated via the (O17,O′17γ) reaction at 340 MeV. The γ decay was measured with high resolution using the AGATA (advanced γ tracking array demonstrator array). Differential cross sections were obtained at few different angles for the scattered particle. The results of the elastic scattering and inelastic excitation of 2+,3−, and 1− states are compared with distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, using both the standard collective form factor and a form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities. This allowed to extract the isoscalar component of the 1− state at 6.424 MeV. The comparison of the present (O17,O′17γ) data with existing (γ,γ′) and (p,p′) data in the corresponding region of the γ continuum (6–11 MeV), characterized by a large E1 component, shows completely different behaviors of the cross section as a function of the nuclear excitation energy. The comparison of the data with DWBA calculations suggests a decrease of the isoscalar strength in the cross section with increasing excitation energy.

Abstract: Background: Spectroscopic information in the neutron-rich actinide region are important to test theory in order to make predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: Gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in 70Zn+238U and in 136Xe+238U have been measured in two epxeriments performed at INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the 70Zn experiment the high resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the 136Xe experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the DANTE MCP detectors. Results: The ground-state band of 240U was measured up to the 24+ level. Results from a gamma-gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence are shown. Moments of inertia show clear upbend. Intriguing evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of 240U is found. Conclusions: Detailed comparison with latest calculations show best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) for the g. s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a band based on an octupole vibration.

Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found.Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states

Abstract: The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA and the coincident gamma rays were measured with the AGATA demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188, 198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behaviour towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect gamma-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast-band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states.

Abstract: The heavy ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV beam energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Aim of the experiment is the measurement of elastic, inelastic and one nucleon transfer cross sections. The data are presented in parallel with similar results for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, using existing data from the reaction 24Ne + 208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). A comparison with angular distributions obtained by semiclassical and DWBA predictions for the quadrupole deformation parameter is also discussed. In particular, the DWBA analysis allowed to determine the beta2 charge deformation parameter both in 22Ne and 24Ne.

Abstract: The neutron-deficient nucleus 75Kr has been studied in two EUROBALL experiments. The analysis yielded a considerably extended level scheme including two newly observed excited high spin bands. The results are interpreted in the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. The calculations compare well to the experimentally established level scheme and predict the nucleus to be mainly prolate or triaxially deformed at high spin. Evidence for an oblate-prolate shape coexistence could not be found at high spin.

Abstract: The neutron-rich cobalt isotopes up to A = 67 have been studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a 238U target with a 460-MeV 70Zn beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt γ rays belonging to each nucleus has been achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data are discussed in terms of the systematics of the cobalt isotopes and interpreted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the fpgd model space. Abstract: The level structures of the N = 50, 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ -ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28.

Abstract: Yrast states up to (6+) in the neutron-rich 40S nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215 MeV beam of 36S ions with a thin 208Pb target. The novel experimental setup that combines the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the high-efficiency γ -ray detection array, CLARA, was used. A new γ -ray transition at an energy of 1572 keV was observed and tentatively assigned to the (6+) → (4+) transition. A comparison of experimental observations and the results of large-scale 0hω sd-pf shell-model calculations indicates that one- and two-proton excitations from the 2s1/2 to the 1d3/2 orbitals play an important role in reproducing the 40S yrast level structure and the published B(E2 ; 0+g.s.→ 2+) value. The structure of the yrast states of the even-A isotopes of sulfur is interpreted in terms of the configurations of valence protons and neutrons within the context of large-scale 0hω sd-pf shell-model calculations.

Abstract: Excited states in the N = 30 neutron-rich 49K have been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions with thin targets and the PRISMA-CLARA spectrometer combined with thick-target - coincidence data from Gammasphere. The d3/2 proton-hole state is located 92 keV above the s1/2 ground state and the proton-particle f7/2 state is suggested at 2104 keV. Three other levels are established as involving the coupling to 2+ of two neutrons above the N = 28 shell. The measured or estimated lifetimes served to reinforce the interpretation of the observed level structure which is found to be in satisfactory agreement with shell model calculations.

Abstract: Lifetimes of low-lying excited states of the neutron-rich 44, 46Ar nuclei, populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, are measured by means of the differential recoil distance Doppler shift method. The extracted electromagnetic transition probabilities are compared with previous intermediate-energy Coulomb-excitation measurements and with large-scale shell-model calculations. The increase in the deduced B(E2 ; 2+→0+) transition probability from 44Ar to the closed-shell nucleus 46Ar contradicts the earlier results of Coulomb-excitation experiments. Shell-model calculations using different effective interactions agree with the new measured values.

Abstract: The energy of the first excited 2+ state in 96Kr was measured as 241 keV. The nucleus was produced in the fission of 238U induced by a 954-MeV 136Xe beam and prompt rays were observed using the clover array CLARA in coincidence with fission products identified with the PRISMA spectrometer. The evolution of the quadrupole collectivity in the Kr isotopes with N50 is discussed by comparison with that from the Rb to Mo isotones and with predictions of various theoretical calculations.

This is the first time such a method is applied to measure lifetimes of neutron-rich nuclei populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction. This exteneds the lifetime knowledge beyond the f7/2 shell closure and allows to derive the effective proton and neutron charges in the fp shell near the doubly-magic nucleus 48Ca, using large-scale shell-model claculations. These results seem to indicate an orbital dependence of the core polarization along the fp shell.

Abstract: The low-lying yrast states in the 51 Ca and 52 Sc nuclei were investigated to obtain information on the evolution of the p 1 / 2 and f 5 / 2 neutron single-particle orbitals in neutron-rich nuclei near proton number Z = 20. Level structures associated with neutron excitations into these two orbitals and with proton excitations across the Z = 20 shell gap were identified. Shell-model calculations with the recently proposed GXPF1A interaction account reasonably well for the fp -shell states. Abstract: The neutron-rich Mn isotopes from A=59 to 63 have been studied through multi-nucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a 238U target with a beam of 70Zn at an energy of Elab=460 MeV. Prompt rays measured by the CLARA array have been identified unambiguously for each nucleus, using coincidence relationships with ions detected in the high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The new data extends the knowledge of the low-lying level structure of Mn isotopes, which is discussed in terms of the systematics of the region. Results are compared with large-scale shell-model calculations using different effective interactions and valence spaces.

Abstract: The low-lying yrast states in the Ca-51 and Sc-52 nuclei were investigated to obtain information on the evolution of the p(1/2) and f(5/2) neutron single-particle orbitals in neutron-rich nuclei near proton number Z=20. Level structures associated with neutron excitations into these two orbitals and with proton excitations across the Z=20 shell gap were identified. Shell-model calculations with the recently proposed GXPF1A interaction account reasonably well for the fp-shell states. The energy separation between the nu p(1/2) and nu f(5/2) orbitals in the Ca isotopes appears to be overestimated by the GXPF1A Hamiltonian.

Abstract: The neutron-rich Fe isotopes from A=61 to 66 were studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a $^{238}$U target with a 400 MeV $^{64}$Ni beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt $\gamma$ rays belonging to each nucleus was achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data extend our knowledge of the level structure of Fe isotopes, which is discussed in terms of the systematics of the region and compared with large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract: The excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus $_{15}^{37}P_{22}$ have been populated in grazing reactions, using a beam of $^{36}$S ions (at 215 MeV) delivered onto a thin $^{208}$Pb target. Emitted $\gamma$ rays from excited projectile-like nuclei were detected using the CLARA array of 25 escape-suppressed Ge clover detectors in coincidence with reaction products detected and identified with the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. A level scheme is presented for $^{37}$P together with proposed spin assignments. The level structure of $^{37}$P is discussed within the context of shell-model calculations by using an improved sdpf effective interaction.

Level energies are compared with those of the isobars Co-54 and Fe-54 and of the cross-conjugate nuclei of mass A=42. The good but puzzling f(7/2) cross-conjugate symmetry in mirror and triplet energy differences is analyzed. Shell model calculations reproduce the new data but the necessary nuclear charge-dependent phenomenology is not fully explained by modern nucleon-nucleon potentials.

Abstract: The nucleus 31 P has been studied in the 24 Mg( 16 O,2 αp ) reaction with a 70-MeV 16 O beam. A complex level scheme extended up to spins 17/2 + and 15/2 − , on positive and negative parity, respectively, has been established. Lifetimes for the new states have been investigated by the Doppler shift attenuation method. Two shell-model calculations have been performed to describe the experimental data, one by using the code ANTOINE in a valence space restricted to the sd shell, and the other by applying the Monte Carlo shell model in a valence space including the sd - fp shells. The latter calculation indicates that intruder excitations, involving the promotion of a T = 0 proton-neutron pair to the fp shell, play a dominant role in the structure of the positive-parity high-spin states of 31 P. ispartof: Physical Review C, Nuclear Physics vol:73 issue:2 status: published

Abstract: Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient gamma-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled.
