Abstract

Fission and gamma-emission probabilities induced by transfer or inelastic scattering reactions with light projectile nuclei are very valuable quantities for constraining the models that describe the de-excitation of heavy nuclei. We have developed an experimental set-up that allows us to simultaneously measure fission and gamma-emission probabilities. The measurement of the gamma-emission probability at excitation energies where the fission channel is open is challenging due to the intense background of gamma rays emitted by the fission fragments. We discuss the procedure to subtract such a background and the constraints that this subtraction and other experimental conditions put on the set up. We show that our set-up complies with these constraints., 18 pages, 10 figures

We investigated the 238U(d,p) reaction as a surrogate for the n + 238U reaction. For this purpose we measured for the first time the γ -decay and fission probabilities of 239U∗ simultaneously and compared them to the corresponding neutron-induced data. We present the details of the procedure to infer the decay probabilities, as well as a thorough uncertainty analysis, including parameter correlations. Calculations based on the continuumdiscretized coupled-channels method and the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) were used to correct our data from detected protons originating from elastic and inelastic deuteron breakup. In the region where fission and γ emission compete, the corrected fission probability is in agreement with neutron-induced data, whereas the γ -decay probability is much higher than the neutron-induced data. We have performed calculations of the decay probabilities with the statistical model and of the average angular momentum populated in the 238U(d,p) reaction with the DWBA to interpret these results Comisión Europea 269499

Abstract

International audience; We have measured the fission probabilities of Am242,Cm243, and Cm244 induced by the transfer reactions Am243(He3,He4),Am243(He3,t), and Am243(He3,d), respectively. The details of the experimental procedure and a rigorous uncertainty analysis, including a correlation matrix, are presented. For Cm243 our data show clear structures well below the fission threshold. To our knowledge, it is the first time that these structures have been observed for this nucleus. We have compared the measured fission probabilities to calculations based on the statistical model to obtain information on the fission barriers of the produced fissioning nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; CERN's neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF has produced a considerable amount of experimental data since it has become fully operational with the start of its scientific measurement programme in 2001. The innovative features of the facility, in the two experimental areas, (flight paths 20 m and 185 m), allow for an accurate determination of the neutron cross section for radioactive samples or for isotopes with small neutron capture cross section, of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics. An outline of the experimental nuclear astrophysical data activities at n_TOF will be presented.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are one of the fundamental nuclear data in the study of the s (slow) process of nucleosynthesis. More interestingly, the competition between the capture and the decay rates in some unstable nuclei determines the local isotopic abundance pattern. Since decay rates are often sensible to temperature and electron density, the study of the nuclear properties of these nuclei can provide valuable constraints to the physical magnitudes of the nucleosynthesis stellar environment. Here we report on the capture cross section measurement of two thallium isotopes, 204Tl and 205Tl performed by the time-of-flight technique at the n TOF facility at CERN. At some particular stellar s-process environments, the decay of both nuclei is strongly enhanced, and determines decisively the abundance of two s-only isotopes of lead, 204Pb and 205Pb. The latter, as a long-lived radioactive nucleus, has potential use as a chronometer of the last s-process events that contributed to final solar isotopic abundances.

Abstract

The general features of a 4He gas scintillator prototype detector were characterized, as an alternative to liquid and plastic scintillators for a potential integration into the Radial Neutron Camera (RNC) in ITER. Two measurement campaigns were conducted at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) in Germany using fast mono-energetic neutrons. Results from the first measurement campaign showed a light output response of the detector linear with the incident neutron energy, at least up to 14.8 MeV. A complete discrimination between neutrons and gammas was achieved by applying a 0.30 MeV threshold in terms of deposited neutron energy. The response function and the intrinsic efficiency of the detector were characterized in a second measurement campaign using collimated-beam conditions, similar to those expected in the RNC at ITER, to test the suitability of the detector in such a diagnostic system. The response function to 2.5 MeV and 14.8 MeV mono-energetic neutrons was measured and validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Some changes to the present prototype may be considered in the future to make it suitable as a neutron detector for the RNC at ITER.
