Abstract

The cross section for the reaction $p+^6\text{Li}\to\eta+^7\text{Be}$ was measured at an excess energy of 11.28 MeV above threshold by detecting the recoiling $^7$Be nuclei. A dedicated set of focal plane detectors was built for the magnetic spectrograph Big Karl and was used for identification and four momentum measurement of the $^7$Be. A differential cross section of $\frac{d\sigma}{d\Omega}=(0.69\pm{0.20}\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.20\text{(syst.)})\text{nb/sr}$ for the ground state plus the 1/2$^-$ was measured. Abstract

We have measured inclusive data on $K^+$-meson production in $pp$ collisions at COSY J\"ulich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the hyperon-nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three parts: $\Lambda p$, $\Sigma^0p$ and $\Sigma^+n$. The cross section for the $\Sigma^+n$ channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in that excess energy region. Abstract

Inclusive measurements of pion production in proton--proton collisions in the forward direction were undertaken at 400 and 600 MeV at COSY using the Big Karl spectrograph. The high resolution in the $\pi^+$ momentum ensured that there was an unambiguous separation of the $pp\to {\pi}^+d/\pi^+pn$ channels. Using these and earlier data, the ratio of the production cross sections could be followed through the $\Delta$ region and compared with the predictions of final state interaction theory. Deviations are strongly influenced by long-range terms in the production operator and the tensor force in the final $pn$ system. These have been investigated in a realistic $pp\to\pi^+d/\pi^+pn$ calculation that includes $S \rightleftharpoons D$ channel coupling between the final nucleons. Abstract

It has been argued recently that the so-called nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) is an observable useful for identifying the quark-gluon plasma. We discuss the effect of Fermi motion in nuclei on $R_{AA}$ at CERN SPS and BNL RHIC energies. Contrary to the simple intuition, rather large effects are found for CERN SPS. The Fermi motion in nuclei contributes significantly to the Cronin effect. The effect found is qualitatively similar to the one observed experimentally at CERN energies and similar to the one obtained in the models of multiple scattering of initial partons. Abstract

Constraints on the spin-averaged $\Lambda p$ scattering length and effective range have been obtained from measurements of the $pp\to pK^+\Lambda$ reaction close to the production threshold by comparing model phase-space Dalitz plot occupations with experimental ones. The data fix well the position of the virtual bound state in the $\Lambda p$ system. Combining this with information from elastic $\Lambda p$ scattering measurements at slightly higher energies, together with the fact that the hyperdeuteron is not bound, leads to a new determination of the low energy $\Lambda p$ scattering parameters., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The $pp \to pp \eta^{\prime}$ (958) reaction has been measured at COSY using the internal beam and the COSY-11 facility. The total cross sections at the four different excess energies \mbox{$ Q = ~1.5 ~MeV, ~1.7 ~MeV, ~2.9 ~MeV,$ and $ ~4.1 MeV$} have been evaluated to be \mbox{$ \sigma = 2.5 \pm 0.5~nb$, $~~~ 2.9 \pm 1.1~nb$, $~~~ 12.7 \pm 3.2~nb$, ~ and $~~~ 25.2 \pm 3.6 ~nb $}, respectively. In this region of excess energy the $\eta^{\prime}$ (958) cross sections are much lower compared to those of the $\pi ^0$ and $\eta$ production., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The energy dependence of the total cross section for the pp \to pK^+\Lambda reaction was measured in the threshold region covering the excess energy range up to 7MeV. Existing model calculations describe the slope of the measured cross sections well, but are too low by a factor of two to three in rate. Abstract

Statistical aspects of the dynamics of chaotic scattering in the classical model of $\alpha$-cluster nuclei are studied. It is found that the dynamics governed by hyperbolic instabilities which results in an exponential decay of the survival probability evolves to a limiting energy distribution whose density develops the Boltzmann form. The angular distribution of the corresponding decay products shows symmetry with respect to $\pi/2$ angle. Abstract

International audience; In the ASY-EOS experiment flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for (197)Au+(197)Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon, in order to investigate the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. By comparing the experimental data with the UrQMD transport model predictions, we have extracted a new constraint in agreement with the moderately soft to linear density dependence obtained in the former analysis on FOPI-LAND data, but reducing the associated uncertainty by a factor ∼ 2.

Abstract

International audience; The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011., Comment: Talk given by P. Abstract

Nuclear multifragmentation in d (4.4 GeV) + Au collision was studied with the 4π setup FASA installed at the external beam of the Dubna Nuclotron. Data obtained are analyzed within the statistical model of multifragmentation. It is found that the kinetic energy spectra of intermediate mass fragments deviate from the predicted ones. It is explained by the collective flow caused by the thermal expansion of fragmenting nucleus.

Abstract

New angular-distribution data of 13С + 18О elastic and inelastic scattering at the energy Elab(18O) = 105 MeV were obtained for the transitions to the ground and excited states 3.088 MeV(1/2+), 3.555 MeV (1/2-), 3.854 MeV (5/2+) of 13С and 1.982 MeV (2+), 3.555 MeV (4+), 3.921 MeV (2+), 4.456 MeV (1-), 5.098 MeV (3-), 5.260 MeV (2+) of 18O. These and the 13С + 18О elastic scattering data taken from the literature at the energies Elab(18O) = 15, 20, 24, 31 MeV and Elab(13С) = 24 MeV were analysed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels methods. Sets of 13С + 18О optical potential parameters and their energy dependence were obtained. Contributions of potential scattering and transfer reactions to the elastic and inelastic channels of 13С + 18О scattering were studied. Isotopic differences (effects) in 12, 13С + 16, 18О optical potential parameters were investigated.

Abstract

We have measured inclusive data on K + -meson production in pp collisions at COSY Julich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the hyperon–nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three parts: Λp, Σ 0 p and Σ + n . The cross section for the Σ + n channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in that excess energy region. The data together with previous results at higher energies are compatible with a phase space dependence.

Abstract

þ ðLpÞ K þ =pþ separation abstract A new threshold Cherenkov detector has been built for the detection of charged pions in the focal plane of a magnetic spectrograph. Silica aerogel with refractive index of n ¼ 1:05 is applied as a radiator. The detector exhibits a very high detection efficiency for pions with momenta X900 MeV=c. Using two Cherenkov detectors in series a very high pion suppression factor of 10 5 was achieved.

Abstract

Total and differential cross sections for the d p → He 3 η reaction have been measured near threshold for He 3 center-of-mass momenta in the range from 17.1 MeV/c to 87.5 MeV/c. The data were taken during a slow ramping of the COSY internal deuteron beam scattered on a proton target detecting the He 3 ejectiles with the COSY-11 facility. The forward–backward asymmetries of the differential cross sections deviate clearly from zero for center-of-mass momenta above 50 MeV/c indicating the presence of higher partial waves in the final state. Below 50 MeV/c center-of-mass momenta a fit of the final state enhancement factor to the data of the total cross sections results in the He 3 – η scattering length of | a | = 4.3 ± 0.5 fm .

Abstract

Sigma+ hyperon production was measured at the COSY-11 spectrometer via the p p --> n K+ Sigma+ reaction at excess energies of Q = 13 MeV and Q = 60 MeV. These measurements continue systematic hyperon production studies via the p p --> p K+ Lambda/Sigma0 reactions where a strong decrease of the cross section ratio close-to-threshold was observed. In order to verify models developed for the description of the Lambda and Sigma0 production we have performed the measurement on the Sigma+ hyperon and found unexpectedly that the total cross section is by more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted by all anticipated models. After the reconstruction of the kaon and neutron four momenta, the Sigma+ is identified via the missing mass technique. Abstract

Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid--fog phase transition deep inside the spinodal region. The experimental data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed. It is concluded that the decay process of hot nuclei is characterized by two size parameters: transition state and freeze-out volumes. The similarity between dynamics of fragmentation and ordinary fission is discussed. Abstract

Some of the latest results of the PHOBOS experiment from the √s NN = 200 GeV Au+Au data are discussed. Those relevant to strangeness production are emphasized. These observations relate to the nature of the matter created when heavy ions collide at the highest achieved energy. The invariant yields of strange and non-strange charged hadrons at very low transverse momentum have been measured, and used to differentiate between different dynamical scenarios. In the intermediate transverse momentum range, the measured ratios of strange and anti-strange kaons approach one, while the antibaryon to baryon ratio is still significantly less, independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum. At high transverse momenta, we find that central and peripheral Au+Au collisions produce similar numbers of charged hadrons per participant nucleon pair, rather than per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.

Abstract

The production of eta and eta-prime mesons in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions has been investigated at the synchrotrons CELSIUS, COSY and SATURNE. The magnitude and energy dependence of the total cross section as well as the occupation distribution of the phase space serve as observables for investigating the mechanisms underlying the production processes and the interaction of mesons with nucleons. The precise data on the eta and eta-prime creation via the pp --> pp eta(eta-prime) reactions allowed to settle the general features of the eta and eta-prime meson production and revealed the sensitivity of the mentioned observables to the nucleon-nucleon-meson final state interaction. The particular production properties, like for example the determination of the dominating exchange processes which lead to the excitation of the S_11 nucleon isobar in the case of eta creation, must be established by confrontation with other observables. The present status of this investigation with an emphasis on the results of the COSY-11 collaboration is briefly presented. Abstract

Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments (IMF) in the collisions of protons (up to 8.1 GeV), 4He (4 and 14.6 GeV), and 12C (22.4 GeV) on Au has been studied with the 4π setup FASA. In all the cases, thermal multifragmentation of the hot and diluted target spectator takes place. The fragment multiplicity and charge distributions are well described by the combined model including the modified intranuclear cascade followed by the statistical multibody decay of the hot system. IMF-IMF-correlation study supports this picture, giving a very short time scale of the process (≤70 fm/c). This decay process can be interpreted as the first-order nuclear “liquid-fog” phase transition inside the spinodal region. The evolution of the mechanism of thermal multifragmentation with increasing projectile mass was investigated. The onset of the radial collective flow was observed for heavier projectiles. The analysis reveals information on the fragment space distribution inside the breakup volume: heavier IMFs are formed predominantly in the interior of the fragmenting nucleus possibly due to the density gradient.

The yields of identified particles have been measured at RHIC for Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV using the PHOBOS spectrometer. The ratios of antiparticle to particle yields near mid-rapidity are presented. The first measurements of the invariant yields of charged pions, kaons and protons at very low transverse momenta are also shown.

Abstract

We present transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The evolution of the spectra for transverse momenta p_T from 0.25 to 5GeV/c is studied as a function of collision centrality over a range from 65 to 344 participating nucleons. We find a significant change of the spectral shape between proton-antiproton and peripheral Au+Au collisions. Comparing peripheral to central Au+Au collisions, we find that the yields at the highest p_T exhibit approximate scaling with the number of participating nucleons, rather than scaling with the number of binary collisions.

Abstract

A stack of annular detectors made of high purity germanium was used to measure p + d → 3 He + π 0 and p + d → 3 H + π + differential and total cross sections at beam momenta from 900 to 1050 MeV/c. The total cross sections are consistent with ∆-excitation. The differential data consist of two components. One corresponds to large momentum transfer from the projectile to the pion, the other to small momentum transfer. The former shows an independence of the slope as function of the momentum transfer t (scaling). The scale parameter is different for π + and π 0 emission which violates isospin symmetry. The second component which is almost isotropic is in agreement with isospin symmetry. It is approximately a quarter of the total yield in the ∆ resonance region.  2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

Angular distributions of elastic and inelastic scattering of 11B ions by 12C nuclei were measured at the energy Elab(11B)=49 MeV in the angular range θcm≈24∘–156∘ for the transitions to the ground and 2.12 MeV (1/2−), 4.44 MeV (2+)+4.45 MeV (5/2−) and 5.02 MeV (3/2−) excited states of 11B and 12C nuclei. These data and the data of the 12C+11B elastic scattering known from the literature in the broad energy range Ecm≈5–52 MeV were analyzed by the optical model (OM) and the coupled reaction channels (CRC) method. The elastic, inelastic scattering and one- and two-step transfers were included in the coupling scheme. The energy dependence of the OM potential parameters was studied.

Abstract

Total and differential cross sections for the reactions p + d → 3He + m 0 with m=π, η and p + d → 3H+π+ were measured with the GEM detector at COSY for beam momenta between threshold and the maximum of the corresponding baryon resonance. For both reactions a strong forward-backward asymmetry was found. The data were compared with model calculations. The aspect of isospin symmetry breaking is studied.

Abstract

The production of eta mesons has been measured in the proton-proton interaction close to the reaction threshold using the COSY-11 internal facility at the cooler synchrotron COSY. Total cross sections were determined for eight different excess energies in the range from 0.5 MeV to 5.4 MeV. Abstract

Total cross sections for the pp --> pp eta' reaction have been measured in the excess energy range from Q = 1.53 MeV to Q = 23.64 MeV. The experiment has been performed at the internal installation COSY-11 using a stochastically cooled proton beam of the COoler SYnchrotron COSY and a hydrogen cluster target. The determined energy dependence of the total cross section weakens the hypothesis of the S-wave repulsive interaction between the eta' meson and the proton. New data agree well with predictions based on the phase-space distribution modified by the proton-proton final-state-interaction (FSI) only., Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 4 figures

Abstract

The angular distributions of elastic and inelastic scattering of the 12C ions on the 9Be nuclei were measured using the Kiev U-240 cyclotron at the beam energy 65 MeV for the transitions to the ground state of the 12C nucleus and to the ground, 1.68 MeV and 2.43 MeV excited states of the 9Be nucleus. These data and elastic scattering in the 9Be + 12C system in the energy range of Ecm=5.14–90.46 MeV were analyzed within the optical and coupled reaction channel (CRC) models. The elastic and inelastic scattering, transfer reactions and spin reorientation of the 9Be nucleus in the ground state were included in the coupled channel scheme. The data of inelastic scattering at Elab(12C)=65 MeV were used to determine the deformation parameters of 9Be nucleus in the ground state. It was found that the reorientation process dominates in the elastic scattering data at large angles. A good description of all sets of experimental data was achieved. The energy dependence of parameters for the real and imaginary parts of the optical potential was analyzed using analytic forms of the Woods–Saxon type. The dispersion relation between the real and imaginary parts of the optical potential was applied in the analysis of the energy dependence. The parameters for the energy dependence of the 9Be + 12C optical potential were determined.

Abstract

We present a method to determine precisely the absolute momentum of the external proton beam from the Julich Cooler Synchrotron COSY near 1930 MeV /c . In the pp → d π + reaction at 1930.477 MeV /c incident beam momentum, the forward going pions ( θ c.m. =0° ) and the backward going deuterons ( θ c.m. =180° ) have the same laboratory momentum. Such coincident pion–deuteron events are detected in the focal plane of the magnetic spectrometer BIG KARL located at θ lab =0° . Using the nearly linear dependence of the difference between the measured pion and deuteron momenta as a function of the proton beam momentum, the absolute momentum of the external proton beam from COSY near 1930 MeV /c was determined with a precision of 5.2×10 −5 .

Abstract

Associated strangeness production in the reactions γp → K + Λ and γp → K + Σ 0 was measured with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher ring ELSA at Bonn. Data on total and differential cross sections and on hyperon polarizations are presented. The total cross section for Λ production shows a strong threshold enhancement whereas the Σ 0 data have a maximum at about E γ =1.45 GeV. Along with the angular decomposition of the differential cross section into polynomials, this suggests resonance production. However, the angular distributions of both hyperon polarizations vary only slightly with the photon energy. Λ and Σ 0 polarizations show opposite signs and change sign over the angular range.

Abstract

The 14C(6Li,6He)14N reaction was investigated at a 6Li ion energy of 93 MeV. The angular distributions for several natural and unnatural parity states of the 14N nucleus were compared with the DWBA and Coupled Reaction Channels (CRC) calculations assuming direct charge exchange and two-step sequential nucleon transfers. It was shown that the direct charge-exchange mechanism dominates for the transitions to the ground and excited (Ex = 3.95 MeV) 14 states of the 14N nucleus up to angles of 50°–70°. The sequential nucleon transfers must be taken into account at larger angles for these states and in the full angular range for the other states (2.31 MeV (0+, T = 1), 5.11 MeV (2−), 5.69 MeV (1−) + 5.83 MeV (3−), 7.03 MeV (2+) and 8.49 MeV (4−)).

Abstract

The $pp \to pp \eta^{\prime}$ (958) reaction has been measured at COSY using the internal beam and the COSY-11 facility. The total cross sections at the four different excess energies \mbox{$ Q = ~1.5 ~MeV, ~1.7 ~MeV, ~2.9 ~MeV,$ and $ ~4.1 MeV$} have been evaluated to be \mbox{$ \sigma = 2.5 \pm 0.5~nb$, $~~~ 2.9 \pm 1.1~nb$, $~~~ 12.7 \pm 3.2~nb$, ~ and $~~~ 25.2 \pm 3.6 ~nb $}, respectively. In this region of excess energy the $\eta^{\prime}$ (958) cross sections are much lower compared to those of the $\pi ^0$ and $\eta$ production.

Abstract

The 4π-fragment-spectrometer FOBOS developed for heavy-ion research at beam energies of 10–100 AMeV has been commissioned for physical experiments at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Based on the logarithmic detector principle, it is able to register charged fragments from protons up to heavy residual nuclei in a large dynamical range. Position-sensitive avalanche counters, axial ionization chambers and CsI(Tl) scintillation detectors are arranged in three concentric detector shells. An array of phoswich detectors is used as a more granular forward detector at narrow polar angles. The modular concept of FOBOS allows for different experimental application in the field of exclusive fragment spectroscopy at medium multiplicities. For illustration, the fragment spectroscopy studies concerning the spontaneous fission process and the fragmentation of hot nuclei by means of the FOBOS set-up are considered.

Abstract

We discuss some selected effects which may potentially be responsible for an enhancement of the large- E τ inclusive jet production with respect to the modern NLO analyses observed recently by the CDF Collaboration at Fermilab. We find that in addition to the modification of large- x gluon distribution also target mass corrections in lepton DIS and effect of the pion cloud in the nucleon may be essential for a proper understanding of the experimental jet data. The meson cloud model which turned out to be successful in quantitative understanding of the Gottfried Sum Rule violation, SU(3) symmetry violation of the nucleon sea and the Drell-Yan asymmetry measured recently at CERN, produces also a sizable enhancement of the large- E τ inclusive jet cross section. This enhancement is caused by a substantial enhancement over standard parametrizations of the nucleon sea quark distributions at intermediate and large values of Bjorken- x parameter and/or a special structure of valence quark distributions due to the meson cloud.

Abstract

Due to the high sensitivity of the N N --> N N gamma reaction to the nucleon-nucleon potential, Bremsstrahlung radiation is used as a tool to investigate details of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Such investigations can be performed at the cooler synchrotron COSY in the Research Centre Juelich, by dint of the COSY-11 detection system. The results of the identification of Bremsstrahlung radiation emitted via the d p --> d p gamma reaction in data taken with a proton target and a deuteron beam are presented and discussed.

The PHOBOS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), comprising the spectrometer with multiple layers of silicon wafers, is an excellent detector for very low transverse momentum (p T ) particles. Transverse momentum distributions of π–+π+, K–+K+ and $p+\overline{p}$ produced at mid-rapidity are presented for the 15% most central Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The momentum ranges for measured particles are from 30 to 50 MeV/c for pions, 90 to 130 MeV/c for kaons and 140 to 210 MeV/c for protons and antiprotons. The measurement method is briefly described. A comparison of the p T spectra to experimental results at higher particle momenta and to model predictions is discussed. PACS: 25.75.-q

Abstract

In a multidetector experiment on 26 or 30 AMeV32S+58Ni, up to four coincident heavier or intermediate-mass fragments were observed. One of these occasionally has the characteristics of a projectile-like fragment, up to three may be attributed to the decay of the heavy reaction product. Taking the velocity of the fragments as a measure of the heavy-product excitation energy, one finds evaporation, fission and multifragmentation to follow one another with rising excitation. Model simulations of sequential decay with up to two binary fissions and, alternatively, of simultaneous statistical multifragmentation were performed for comparison with experimental distributions of mass, velocity and (for events with three slow intermediate-mass fragments) relative azimuthal angle. Though in the three-fragment events indications of simultaneous multifragmentation are present, the sequential binary decay predominates. Evaporated protons and α particles detected in coincidence have a mean multiplicity growing with excitation energy, while the temperature governing the spectra has a plateau with a value of about 5.5 MeV.

Abstract

The angular distributions of the 6 Li( 7 Li, 7 Be) 6 He reaction were measured at 78 MeV projectile energy for the transitions to the ground and first excited states of 6 He and 7 Be nuclei. The experimental data were analyzed with the one-step charge-exchange and two-step nucleon transfer mechanisms using DWBA and coupled reaction channels methods. A satisfactory description of the experimental data was obtained with direct charge-exchange processes at small angles and with two-step nucleon transfers at large angles.

Abstract

at √ s NN = 200 GeV. The spectra were measured for transverse momenta pT from 0.25 to 4.5 GeV/c in a rapidity range of 0.2 < y� < 1.4. The evolution of the spectra is studied as a function of collision centrality, from 65 to 344 participating nucleons. The results are compared to data from proton- antiproton collisions and Au+Au collisions at lower RHIC energies. We find a significant change of the spectral shape between proton-antiproton and peripheral Au+Au collisions. Comparing peripheral to central Au+Au collisions, we find that the yields at high pT exhibit approximate scaling with the number of participating nucleons, rather than scaling with the number of binary collisions.

Abstract

Total cross sections for the quasifree pn{yields}pn{eta} reaction in the range from the kinematical threshold up to 20 MeV excess energy have been determined. At threshold they exceed corresponding cross sections for the pp{yields}pp{eta} reaction by a factor of about 3 in contrast to the factor of 6 established for higher excess energies. To large extent, the observed decrease of the ratio {sigma}(pn{yields}pn{eta})/{sigma}(pp{yields}pp{eta}) toward threshold may be assigned to the different energy dependence of the proton-proton and proton-neutron final-state interactions. The experiment was conducted using a proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and a cluster jet deuteron target. The proton-neutron reactions were tagged by the spectator proton whose momentum was measured for each event. Protons and neutron outgoing from the pn{yields}pn{eta} reaction have been registered by means of the COSY-11 facility, an apparatus dedicated for threshold meson production.

Abstract

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections dsigma/dOmega dE were measured for p, d, t, 3,4He, 6,7Li, 7,9Be, and 10,11B produced in collisions of 0.175 GeV protons with Ni target. The analysis of measured dfferential cross sections allowed to extract total production cross sections for ejectiles listed above. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions indicate the presence of other nonequilibrium processes besides the emission of nucleons from the intranuclear cascade, and besides the evaporation of various particles from remnants of intranuclear cascade. These nonequilibrium processes consist of coalescence of nucleons into light charged particles during the intranuclear cascade, of the fireball emission which contributes to the cross sections of protons and deuterons, and of the break-up of the target nucleus which leads to the emission of intermediate mass fragments. All such processes were found earlier at beam energies 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV for Ni as well as for Au targets, however, significant differences in properties of these processes at high and low beam energy are observed in the present study., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures
