Abstract

International audience; The high-spin structures of Ba136 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Ba136 is populated in a Xe136+U238 MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS γ-ray array. The level scheme above the Jπ=10+ isomer in Ba136 is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approximately 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex=3707- and Ex=4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both Te132 and Xe134 are characterized by high-energy 12+→10+ transitions, the Ba136E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negative-parity states only a few hundred keV above the Jπ=10+ isomer. Furthermore, spins are established for several hitherto unassigned high-spin states in Ba137. The new results close a gap along the high-spin structure of N

Abstract

International audience; The transitional nuclei $^{134}$Ba and $^{133}$Ba are investigated after multinucleon transfer employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and after fusion-evaporation reaction at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. The Jπ=19/2+ state at 1942 keV in $^{133}$Ba is identified as an isomer with a half-life of 66.6(20)ns corresponding to a B(E1) value of 7.7(4)×10−6e2fm2 for the Jπ=19/2+ to Jπ=19/2− transition. The level scheme of $^{134}$Ba above the Jπ=10+ isomer is extended to approximately 6 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ℏω=0.38 MeV along the positive-parity yrast band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=56 isotopes. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, SN100PN, SNV, PQM130, Realistic SM, and EPQQM interactions reproduce the experimental findings and elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. The shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82 and PQM130 interactions reproduce alignment properties and provide detailed insight into the microscopic origin of this phenomenon in transitional $^{134}$Ba.

Abstract

International audience; Background: The nuclear shape is a macroscopic feature of an atomic nucleus that is sensitive to the underlying nuclear structure in terms of collectivity and the interaction between nucleons. Therefore, the evolution of nuclear shapes has attracted many theoretical and experimental nuclear structure studies. The structure of the A≈70, N≈Z nuclei, lying far from the stability line, is interesting because a particularly strong proton-neutron correlation may occur here due to the occupation of the same orbits by nucleons of both types. In this region, different particle configurations drive a nucleus towards various deformed shapes: prolate, oblate, octupole, or nonaxial. These nuclear shapes change rapidly with nucleon number and also with angular momentum. This is reflected by a presence of different structures (bands) of excited states which exhibit a broad range of lifetimes. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to determine lifetimes of some high-spin excited states in As69 and Ge66 nuclei to examine the shape evolution in these neutron-deficient nuclei. Methods: Lifetimes of high-spin states in As69 and Ge66 have been measured by using the Doppler-shift attenuation technique with the GASP and recoil filter detector setup at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The nuclei of interest were produced in the S32(95MeV)+0.8mg/cm2 Ca40 fusion-evaporation reaction. The strongest reaction channels 3p and α2p led to the As69 and Ge66 final nuclei, respectively. Using γ-γ-recoil coincidences we were able to determine very short lifetimes (in the femtosecond range) in the residual nuclei of interest. Results: In As69, the extracted lifetimes are τ=72 (−32, +45) fs for the 33/2+ state at 7897 keV and τ

Abstract

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in 80, 82Se were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In 80Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6+1) and (8+1) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4+1 state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In 82Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6+1 state and the yrare 4+2 state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10+1) state and of the 5−1 state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract

International audience; Detailed information on isomeric states in A≈135 nuclei is exploited to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region northwest of doubly magic nucleus Sn132. The N=79 isotones Xe133 and Ba135 are studied after multinucleon transfer in the Xe136+Pb208 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy and in a pulsed-beam experiment at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany utilizing a Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 40 MeV. Isomeric states are identified via delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. Hitherto tentative excitation energy, spin, and parity assignments of the 2107-keV Jπ=23/2+ isomer in Xe133 are confirmed and a half-life of T1/2=8.64(13) ms is measured. The 2388-keV state in Ba135 is identified as a Jπ=23/2+ isomer with a half-life of 1.06(4) ms. The new results show a smooth onset of isomeric Jπ=23/2+ states along the N=79 isotones and close a gap in the high-spin systematics towards the recently investigated Jπ=23/2+ isomer in Nd139. The resulting systematics of M2 reduced transition probabilities is discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. Latest large-scale shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings generally well and give insight into the structure of the isomers.

Abstract

The transitional nuclei Xe-132 and Xe-133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusionevaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136 + 2(08P)b MNT reactions employing the highresolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe-136 + Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te-130(alpha, xn) Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the J(pi) = (7(-)) and (10+) isomers in Xe-132 and above the 11/2(-) isomer in Xe-133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 as well as the N = 78 and N = 79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T-1/2 >> mu s) isomer in Xe-133 which closes a gap along the N = isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract

International audience; The neutron-rich nucleus Pt200 is investigated via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N=126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction Pt198(Se82, Se80)Pt200 is used to populate excited states of Pt200. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects γ rays coincident with the Se80 recoils, the binary partner of Pt200. The binary partner method is applied to extract the γ-ray transitions and build the level scheme of Pt200. The level at 1884 keV reported by Yates et al. [S. W. Yates, E. M. Baum, E. A. Henry, L. G. Mann, N. Roy, A. Aprahamian, R. A. Meyer, and R. Estep, Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889 (1988)] was confirmed to be at 1882.1 keV and assigned as the (61+) state. An additional γ ray was found and it presumably deexcites the (81+) state. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 190−204Pt isotopes, revealing that Pt200 marks the transition from the γ-unstable behavior of lighter Pt nuclei towards a more spherical one when approaching the N=126 shell closure.

Abstract

The neutron-rich S39 nucleus has been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of S36 ions with a thin Pb208 target. The magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the γ-ray array, CLARA, were used in the measurements. Gamma-ray transitions of the following energies were observed: 339, 398, 466, 705, 1517, 1656, and 1724 keV. Five of the observed transitions have been tentatively assigned to the decay of excited states with spins up to (11/2−). The results of a state-of-the-art shell-model calculation of the level scheme of S39 using the SDPF-U effective interaction are also presented. The systematic behavior of the excitation energy of the first 11/2− states in the odd-A isotopes of sulfur and argon is discussed in relation to the excitation energy of the first excited 2+ states of the adjacent even-A isotopes. The states of S39 that have the components in their wave functions corresponding to three neutrons in the 1f7/2 orbital outside the N=20 core have also been discussed within the context of the 0 ℏω shell-model calculations presented here.

Abstract

The neutron-deficient nucleus 75Kr has been studied in two EUROBALL experiments. The analysis yielded a considerably extended level scheme including two newly observed excited high spin bands. The results are interpreted in the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. The calculations compare well to the experimentally established level scheme and predict the nucleus to be mainly prolate or triaxially deformed at high spin. Evidence for an oblate-prolate shape coexistence could not be found at high spin.

Abstract

We report g-factor measurements for the 19/2+ T1/2 = 4.5(3) µs isomer in 127 Sn and the 10+ T1/2 = 2.69(23) µs isomer in 128 Sn. The experiment was carried out on isomers which were produced and spin-aligned in relativistic heavy-ion fragmentation at GSI and were selected and separated by the GSI fragment separator (FRS). The gamma-rays of the isomer decay were detected by the RISING array. The method of time-differential perturbed angular distribution was utilized. The measured g factors, g(19/2+ ;127 Sn) = -0.17(2) and g(10+ ;128 Sn) = -0.20(4), are compared with shell model calculations. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the method for similar measurements in exotic neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed., 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

New sub-\mu s isomers have been observed in the neutron-rich Sn isotopes. 125,127,129Sn nuclei have been produced in a relativistic fission reaction of 238U on a 9Be target at 750 A MeV and by the fragmentation of 136Xe at 600 A MeV populating high-spin yrast states. In addition to the already known \mu s isomers, three new ones -1 with sub-\mu s half-lives have been observed. These yrast isomers are the high-spin members of the \nu (d_3/2^-1 h_11/2^-2 ) and \nu h_11/2 ^-n, seniority v = 3 multiplets leading to isomeric (23/2+) and (27/2-) states, respectively. Added to the already known 19/2+ \mu s isomers in this region the current work completes the systematic information of neutron-hole excitations toward the filling of the last h_11/2 orbital a t N = 82. The results are discussed in the framework of state-of-the -art shell-model calculations using realistic interactions.

Abstract

We report the results of an experiment in which we studied the near-yrast states in selenium isotopes approaching N = 50 following their population in multinucleon transfer reactions between a 82Se beam and a 192Os target. The level schemes for 80,82Se derived from the current work are compared with restricted-basis shell-model calculations and pair-truncated shell-model calculations. These provide a good description of the yrast sequences in these nuclei using a basis space limited to excitations in the (p3/2 , p1/2 , g9/2 ) and (f5/2 , p3/2 , p1/2 ) orbitals.

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Abstract

The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer for heavy ions PRISMA, installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), was operated up to the end of March 2008 in conjunction with the highly efficient CLARA set-up. It allowed to carry out nuclear structure and reaction mechanism studies in several mass regions of the nuclide chart. Results obtained in the vicinity of the island of inversion and for the heavy iron and chromium isotopes are presented in this contribution. The status of the new focal plane detectors specifically designed for light ions and slow moving heavy ions is also reported.

Abstract

This work focus on the electromagnetic decay properties of the heaviest known mirror pair 67As and 67Se, produced in the fusion evaporation reaction 32S+40Ca, with a E = 90 MeV beam provided by the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. The high selectivity required to investigate these proton-rich nuclei was achieved with the concurrent employment of Gammasphere, Neutron-Shell, and Microball. The full array allowed to obtain the level scheme of the 67Se nucleus up to 5.56 MeV, and 5 new transitions were assigned to the known 67As level-scheme. Abstract

By comparing the excitation energies of analogue states in isobaric multiplets, several nuclear structure properties can be studied as a function of the angular momentum up to high spin states. In particular, the mirror nuclei 35Ar and 35Cl show large differences between the excitation energies of analogue negative-parity states at high spin, confirming the important contribution of the relativistic electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction to the Coulomb energy. The single-particle character of the configuration of these states is reproduced with very good accuracy by shell model calculations in the sd and pf shells valence space. The nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei close to the double-magic nucleus 78Ni has been investigated by measuring the lifetime of excited states. Abstract

The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the γ array CLARA represents a significant step forward in the field of binary reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. With this set-up extensive investigations have been carried out for nuclear structure and reaction dynamics. Via γ-particle coincidences it is now experimentally possible to measure the transfer strength to specific final states with high efficiency. In reactions with heavy ions, one can populate states of high angular momentum and, at the same, one can probe the population of specific nuclear levels via transfer of multiple pairs. Valuable information about the structure of those states can be then derived from the study of their decay modes. In the present paper aspects of these studies will be presented, focusing more closely on the reaction mechanism, in particular on the properties of quasielastic and deep-inelastic processes and on nucleon-nucleon correlations at energies far below the Coulomb barrier. Abstract

We have studied the emission of light unbound clusters,8Be and12C *(0+2), in the reactions18O +13C ?{31} Si ?{23} Ne +8Be and28Si +24Mg ?{52} Fe ?{40} Ca +12C *(0+2). The ?-ray spectra obtained in coincidence with8Be and12C *(0+2) emission have been studied relative to the statistical emission of two or three a-particles. The angular-momentum-to-energy balance of the cluster emission is compared with that of multiple-a emission. The properties of the energy spectra of the binary process and the population of the residual nuclei by cluster emission are discussed. It is observed that cluster emission carries away less excitation energy on average than the sequential emission of the individual components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recently, an intense experimental effort has been devoted to the search of empirical proofs of critical-point symmetries in nuclear structure. These symmetries describe shape-phase transitions and provide parameter-free predictions (up to over-all scale factors) for excitation spectra and B(E2) values. This contribution reports on recent plunger-lifetime measurements ON 102Pd carried out at LNL, Legnaro, with the Cologne plunger apparatus coupled to the GASP spectrometer and using the 92Zr(13C,3n)102Pd reaction at 48 MeV. Abstract

Within the RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations @ GSI) Collabora-tion at GSI, g factor measurements have been performed on isomeric states in neutron-rich isotopes approaching 132 Sn and in the neutron deficient Pb-region (the g-RISING campaign). We present the experimental technique and some typical aspects related to such studies on relativistic beams selected with the FRS fragment separator. First results are presented for the (19/2+ ) 4.5 µs isomeric state in 127 Sn, which has been produced by means of fission of a relativistic 238 U beam on the one hand, and by the fragmentation of a relativistic 136 Xe beam on the other hand. Spin-alignment has been observed in both reactions. It was the first time that spin-alignment has been established in a relativistic fission reaction.

Abstract

Lifetimes of yrast and nonyrast states of 102Pd populated via the 92Zr( 13C, 3n) reaction are measured by means of the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique with a Cologne plunger coupled to a GASP spectrometer. The event-by-event data accumulated at 24 plunger distances in the range of 0.1 μm to 9 mm are analyzed using the differential decay curve method. The resulting B(E2) values of the γ transitions depopulating yrast-band members up to the I π = 8+ state are found to deviate significantly from the corresponding predictions of the E(5) critical-point symmetry. Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: γ - ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in 70Zn + 238U and 136Xe + 238U have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the 70Zn experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the 136Xe experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of _40U was measured up to the 20+ level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24+) level. Results from γ γ coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (Mol) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of 240U is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a Kπ n = 0- band based on an octupole vibration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all. Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange. Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in 136Xe + 238U have been measured in a high-resolution γ-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber. Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the grazing model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA. Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z=93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nucleus 35S has been studied by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the 24Mg(14N,3p) fusion-evaporation reaction at Elab = 40 MeV. A level scheme extended up to Jπ = 17/2+ at 8023 keV and Jπ = 13/2- at 6352 keV has been established. Neutron-rich chlorine isotopes were populated in the 40Ar + 208Pb multiple transfer reaction via the -- 1 p channels in a fragment-y coincident measurement employing the Prisma-Clara setup. New γ transitions have been identified and, together with already available data, level schemes have been revised and compared with the results of large-scale sd-pf shell-model calculations. The evolution of the energy splitting between the s1/2 and d3/2 orbitais and the increased mixing of different proton configurations in the populated CI isotopic chain have been deduced by inspecting the shell-model wave functions. Abstract: The γ decay of the yrast trap in 52Fe has been measured for the first time. The two E4 γ-branches to the states are hindered with respect to other reduced transition probabilities measured in the shell. The interpretation of the data is given in the full pf shell model framework, comparing the results obtained with different residual interactions. Abstract

Conference on Frontiers in Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics, and Reactions -- SEP 10-14, 2007 -- Crete, GREECE, WOS: 000256223700023, Medium and high spin states of the nuclei close to the N=50 shell closure are investigated Using deep inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions. New excited states of the nuclei Ga-81, Ge-82 and As-83 at N=50 shell closure have been identified by means of the Se-82+U-238 reaction. Gamma rays have been acquired using the PRISMA-CLARA setup of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy (LNL)., NCSR, Univ Jyvaskyla, Natl Tech Univ Athens, Greek Minist Educ, U.S. Department of Energy [DE-AC05-00OR22725], I wish to thank the staff of HRIBF for their dedication in the production of RIBs.
