Abstract: Isotopic effects in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies have been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z ratio of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Abstract: The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011., Comment: Talk given by P. Abstract: Directed and elliptic flow for the $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au system at incident energies between 40 and 150 MeV per nucleon has been measured using the INDRA 4$\pi$ multi-detector. For semi-central collisions, the excitation function of elliptic flow shows a transition from in-plane to out-of-plane emission at around 100 MeV per nucleon. The directed flow changes sign at a bombarding energy between 50 and 60 MeV per nucleon and remains negative at lower energies. Molecular dynamics calculations (CHIMERA) indicate sensitivity of the global squeeze-out transition on the $\sigma$ and demonstrate the importance of angular momentum conservation in transport codes at low energies. The conditions for the appearance and possible origins of negative flow are discussed.

Abstract: Isotopic effects in the fragmentation of excited target residues following collisions of $^{12}$C on $^{112,124}$Sn at incident energies of 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA 4$\pi$ detector. The measured yield ratios for light particles and fragments with atomic number $Z \leq$ 5 obey the exponential law of isotopic scaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. Abstract: Breakup temperatures were deduced from double ratios of isotope yields for target spectators produced in the re action Au-197 + Au-197 at 1000 MeV per nucleon. Pairs of He-3,He-4 and Li-6,Li-7 isotopes and pairs of He-3,He-4 and H isotopes (p, d and d, t) yield consistent temperatures after feeding corrections, based on the quantum statistical model, are applied. The temperatures rise with decreasing impact parameter from 4 MeV for peripheral to about 10 MeV for the most central collisions. The good agreement with the breakup temperatures measured previously for projectile spectators at an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon confirms the universality established for the spectator decay at relativistic bombarding energies. The measured temperatures also agree with the breakup temperatures predicted by the statistical multifragmentation model. For these calculations a relation between the initial excitation energy and mass was derived which gives good simultaneous agreement for the fragment charge correlations. The energy spectra of light charged particles, measured at theta(lab) 150 degrees, exhibit Maxwellian shapes with inverse slope parameters much higher than the breakup temperatures. The statistical multifragmentation model, because Coulomb repulsion and sequential decay processes are included, yields light-particle spectra with inverse slope parameters higher than the breakup temperatures but considerably below the measured values. The systematic behavior of the differences suggests that they are caused by light-charged-particle emission prior to the final breakup stage.

Abstract: New results for the strength of the symmetry energy are presented which illustrate the complementary aspects encountered in reactions probing nuclear densities below and above saturation. A systematic study of isotopic effects in spectator fragmentation was performed at the ALADIN spectrometer with 124Sn primary and 107Sn and 124La secondary beams of 600 MeV/nucleon incident energy. The analysis within the Statistical Fragmentation Model shows that the symmetry-term coefficient entering the liquid-drop description of the emerging fragments decreases significantly as the multiplicity of fragments and light particles from the disintegration of the produced spectator systems increases. Higher densities were probed in the FOPI/LAND study of nucleon and light-particle flows in central and mid-peripheral collisions of 197Au+197Au nuclei at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy. From the comparison of the measured neutron and hydrogen squeeze-out ratios with predictions of the UrQMD model a moderately soft symmetry term with a density dependence of the potential term proportional to (ρ/ρ0)γ with γ = 0.9 ± 0.3 is favored. Abstract: Isotopic effects in spectator fragmentations following heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies are investigated using data from recent exclusive experiments with SIS beams at GSI. Reactions of 12C on 112,124Sn at incident energies 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA multidetector while the fragmentation of stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La projectiles was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer. The global characteristics of the reactions are very similar. This includes the rise and fall of fragment production and deduced observables as, e.g., the breakup temperature obtained from double ratios of isotope yields. The mass distributions depend strongly on the neutron-to-proton ratio of the decaying system, as expected for a simultaneous statistical breakup. The ratios of light-isotope yields from neutron-rich and neutron-poor systems follow the law of isoscaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. This is not compensated by an equivalent rise of the breakup temperatures which suggests a reduction of the symmetry term required in a liquid-drop description of the fragments at freeze-out. Abstract: The results from ten statistical multifragmentation models have been compared with each other using selected experimental observables. Even though details in any single observable may differ, the general trends among models are similar. Thus, these models and similar ones are very good in providing important physics insights especially for general properties of the primary fragments and the multifragmentation process. Mean values and ratios of observables are also less sensitive to individual differences in the models. In addition to multifragmentation models, we have compared results from five commonly used evaporation codes. The fluctuations in isotope yield ratios are found to be a good indicator to evaluate the sequential decay implementation in the code. Abstract: Directed flow in symmetric heavy ion collisions has been studied using the 197Au+ 197Au reactions at incident energies between 40 and 150 A MeV. The reactions have been measured with the 4π multi-detector INDRA at the GSI facility. In particular, the bombarding energy at which the elliptic flow switches from in-plane to out-of-plane enhancement has been determined to be clearly above 100 A MeV in good agreement with the result obtained by the FOPI Collaboration. Abstract: We have investigated and interpreted the production cross sections and isotopic distributions of projectile-like residues in the reactions 124Sn + 124Sn and 112Sn + 112Sn at an incident beam energy of 1 GeV/nucleon measured with the FRS fragment separator at the GSI laboratory. For the interpretation of the data, calculations within the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) for an ensemble of excited sources were performed with ensemble parameters. The possible modification of symmetry energy parameter, in the multifragmentation region at the low density and hot freeze-out environment, is studied. It is reconfirmed that a significant reduction of the symmetry energy term is found necessary to reproduce experimental results at these conditions. Abstract: The updated ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, a microscopic transport model, is used to study the directed and elliptic collective flows and the nuclear stopping in Au+Au collisions at incident energies covered by INDRA and lower-energy FOPI experiments. It is seen clearly that these observables are sensitive to both the potential terms (including isoscalar and isovector parts as well as the momentum dependent term) in the equation of state (EoS) and the collision term [including the Pauli blocking and the medium-modified nucleon-nucleon elastic cross section (NNECS)]. The momentum modifications of both, the mean-field potentials and the density dependent NNECS, are found to affect the collectivity of heavy-ion collisions. At INDRA energies (⩽ 150 MeV/nucleon) the dynamic transport with a soft EoS with momentum dependence and with the momentum-modified density-dependent NNECS describes the directed flow exhibited by hydrogen isotopes (Z = 1) emitted at midrapidity fairly well. Abstract: International audience; In the ASY-EOS experiment flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for (197)Au+(197)Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon, in order to investigate the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. By comparing the experimental data with the UrQMD transport model predictions, we have extracted a new constraint in agreement with the moderately soft to linear density dependence obtained in the former analysis on FOPI-LAND data, but reducing the associated uncertainty by a factor ∼ 2.

Abstract: Directed and elliptic flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for the reaction 197Au+197Au at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy within the ASY-EOS experimental campaign at the GSI laboratory. The detection system consisted of the Large Area Neutron Detector LAND, combined with parts of the CHIMERA multidetector, of the ALADIN Time-of-flight Wall, and of the Washington-University Microball detector. The latter three arrays were used for the event characterization and reaction-plane reconstruction. In addition, an array of triple telescopes, KRATTA, was used for complementary measurements of the isotopic composition and flows of light charged particles. From the comparison of the elliptic flow ratio of neutrons with respect to charged particles with UrQMD predictions, a value \gamma = 0.72 \pm 0.19 is obtained for the power-law coefficient describing the density dependence of the potential part in the parametrization of the symmetry energy. It represents a new and more stringent constraint for the regime of supra-saturation density and confirms, with a considerably smaller uncertainty, the moderately soft to linear density dependence deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data. Abstract: International audience; The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

Abstract: International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract: 10th International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics -- SEP 14-18, 2009 -- Tokai, JAPAN, WOS: 000276770500016, The HypHI Phase 0 experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of heavy ion beams was performed at GSI in August and October in 2009, with a projectile of Li-6 at 2 A GeV impinged on carbon graphite target with a thickness of 8 g/cm(2). The experiment mainly aims to reconstruct events of H-3(Lambda), H-4(Lambda) and He-5(Lambda) by observing the pi(-) decay channel. Abstract: We investigated the merits of different event parameters in the identification of Light Charged Particles (LCPs) with CsI(Tl) scintillators read out by photodiodes at high incident energy (400 MeV/u). This investigation is made possible by digital signal processing the output signals. As in the conventional analogue case, the digitized signals allow the discrimination of light charged particles by computing the fast and slow components. In addition other identification parameters as the rise time of the output pulses of the CsI(Tl) come out nearly for free. Aim of this paper is the investigation of novel identification plots and the probe of their merits, in particular at relativistic energies. When the energies of the light charged particles exceed those corresponding to their ranges in CsI(Tl), the points related to the punching-through particles gather in the corresponding scatter plots giving rise to a cusp. The punch-through energies provide a complete set of data for the energy calibration of the reaction products stopped in the CsI(Tl). The obtained results suggest that at relativistic beam energies the energy vs. rise time computation provide an efficient figure for the discrimination in charge and mass of LCPs.

Abstract: The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

Abstract: ECT Workshop on Strange Hadronic Matter -- SEP 26-30, 2011 -- Trento, ITALY, WOS: 000304238700020, The HypHI Phase 0 experiment with Li-6 projectiles at 2 A GeV on a carbon target has been performed at GS' in order to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with peripheral heavy ion collisions. Current data analyses have preliminary shown peaks in invariant mass distributions of p + pi(-) for Lambda, He-3 + pi(-) for H-3(Lambda) and He-4 + pi(-) for H-4(Lambda). Lifetime values for the corresponding peaks have been also deduced, which is in good agreement with the former known values. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: WOS: 000282530300034, The first experiment of the HypHI project, Phase 0, at GSI-Darmstadt performs the feasibility study of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion induced reactions by using the collision of Li-6 at 2 A GeV on a C-12 target. In preparation of the Phase 0 experiment, simulation studies have been performed with a dedicated event reconstruction procedure. Details of this procedure will be discussed in this paper as well as the physics motivation of the Phase 0 and the experimental setup used during simulations. Abstract: WOS: 000270326800009, The construction and properties of three sets of two-dimensional scintillating fiber detector arrays for tracking of charged particles used in the HypHI Phase 0 experiment at GSI will be reported in this paper. The position resolutions and the detection efficiency of detectors have been obtained for each layer of detectors by using Li-6 primary beams and particles with Z = 1 produced by fragment reactions of Xe-136 projectiles on the hydrogen target. Besides, the response of energy deposition of charged particles in the first detector set placed right behind the target has been studied by using light projectile fragments with Z = 1, 2 and 3 produced by Ni-58 and C-12 beams. Extracted resolutions for energy deposition and position as well as the detection efficiency fulfill the requirements of the HypHl Phase 0 experiment. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: WOS: 000358624800021, Hypernuclear production cross sections have been deduced for the first time with induced reaction of heavy ion beam on fixed target and by means of the invariant mass method by the HypHI Collaboration exploiting the reaction of Li-6 C-12 at 2 A GeV or root S-NN = 2.70 GeV. A production cross section of 3.9 +/- 1.4 mu b for H-3(Lambda) and of 3.1 +/- 1.0 mu b for H-4(Lambda) respectively in the projectile rapidity region was inferred as well as the total production cross section of the Lambda hyperon was measured and found to be equal to 1.7 +/- 0.8 mb. A global fit based on a Bayesian approach was performed in order to include and propagate statistical and systematic uncertainties. Production ratios of H-3(Lambda)/H-4(Lambda), H-3(Lambda)/Lambda and H-4(Lambda)/Lambda were included in the inference procedure. The strangeness population fattors S-3 and S-4 of H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) respectively were extracted. In addition, the multiplicities of the Lambda hyperon, H-3(Lambda), and H-4(Lambda) together with the rapidity and transversal momentum density distributions of the observed hypemuclei were extracted and reported.
