Abstract

A study of prompt neutrino events from 400 GeV protons on a beam-dump is presented. The ratio of electron- to muon-neutrino rates is 0.86±0.14, in agreement withe−μ universality. The anti-neutrino to neutrino flux ratio is $$\bar v_\mu /v_\mu = 0.81 \pm 0.19$$ . The absolute rates and distributions observed are shown to be in quantitative agreement with the known properties of charmedquark production in hadron collisions.

Abstract

A high-statistics measurement of the differential cross-sections for neutrino-iron scattering in the wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS is presented. Nucleon structure functions are extracted and theirQ 2 evolution is compared with the predictions of quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract

Experimental results on the production of dimuons by 800-GeV protons incident on a copper target are presented. The results include measurements of both the continuum of dimuons and the dimuon decays of the three lowest-mass $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}$ $S$ states. A description of the apparatus, data acquisition, and analysis techniques is included. A comparison of the results with data taken at lower incident energies indicates a scaling behavior of the continuum dimuon yields.

Abstract

Indirect limits on the mass of the lightest neutralino are derived from the results of searches for charginos, neutralinos, and sleptons performed with data taken by the ALEPH Collaboration at centre-of-mass energies near the Z peak and at 130 and 136 GeV. Within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and when $M_{\tilde\nu}\ge 200$ GeV/c^2, the bound $M_\chi>12.8$ GeV/c^2 at the 95\% confidence level applies for any $\tan\beta$. The impact of lighter sneutrinos is presented in the framework of SUSY grand unified theories; a massless neutralino is allowed only for a narrow range of $\tan\beta$, $\mu$, and the scalar mass parameter $m_0$. Finally, by including Higgs mass constraints and requiring that radiative electroweak symmetry breaking occur, more stringent bounds on $M_\chi$ as a function of $\tan\beta$ are derived., Comment: 26 pages, one latex file and 15 eps figures

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) in Z-boson production observed at the SLAC Linear Collider. In 1992 the SLD detector recorded 10 224 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons with an unpolarized positron beam at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV. The average electron beam polarization during the run was (22.4 ± 0.6)%. We measure ALR to be 0.100 ± 0.0440 (stat.) ±0.004 (syst.), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be $\sin^2\theta_W^{\rm {eff}} = 0.2378\pm 0.0056\, ({\rm stat.})\pm 0.0005\, ({\rm syst.})$.

Single-particle distributions have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for the inclusive processes ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}X$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}X$ at 10.0 and 15.5 GeV/c. The kinematic range for secondary pions was ${p}_{T}=0.15$ GeV/c to 0.9 GeV/c and $x=0 \mathrm{to} 0.5$. The differential cross sections have been assumed to be slowly varying and have been fitted to smooth functions of $x$ and ${p}_{T}$. Cross sections have been obtained for all incoming and outgoing pion charges. The cross sections for the reactions with incident and outgoing pions of like charge are higher than those for unlike charge, but have similar shape. The cross section as a function of the rapidity is plotted together with that of $pp$ inclusive scattering at CERN ISR energies, for the purpose of comparing pion and proton fragmentation.

Neutrino and antineutrino total charged current cross sections on iron were measured in the 100, 160, and 200 GeV narrow band beams at the CERN SPS in the energy range 10 to 200 GeV. Assuming σ/E to be constant, the values corrected for non-isoscalarity are σv/E = (0.686 ± 0.019) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV · nucleon) and σv/E = (0.339 ± 0.010) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV·nucleon). Between 50 and 150 GeV no energy dependence of σ/E was observed within ±3% for neutrino and ±4% for antineutrino interactions.

Cross sections for the inclusive processes $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}X \mathrm{and} \mathrm{pX}$ have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for linearly polarized photons of average energy 10 and 14 GeV. The kinematic range of detected particles was ${P}_{T}=0.15 \mathrm{to} 1.0$ GeV/c, $x=0 \mathrm{to} \ensuremath{-}0.32$ for pions and -0.3 to -0.8 for protons at 10 GeV; the 14-GeV data had measurements at $x=0$ for pions and $x\ensuremath{\approx}\ensuremath{-}0.3$ for protons. The experiment was carried out using collimated coherent bremsstrahlung from a thin diamond radiator and the SLAC 1.6-GeV/c spectrometer. The variation of the cross section, as a function of $x$ and ${P}_{T}$, shows a marked similarity to that observed for pion and proton production from $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions. Our results show little dependence of the pion invariant cross section on either energy or polarization. The $\frac{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}}{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}$ ratio varies from 1.3 at $x=0 \mathrm{to} 1.75$ at $x=\ensuremath{-}0.32$.

Abstract

We report a high-statistics study of the reaction p+W..--> mu../sup +/+..mu../sup -/+X with use of an intense 400-GeV/c proton beam, a magnetized-iron beam dump, and a wide-acceptance detector. Using data near x/sub F/ = 0, we have extracted the nucleon sea-quark distribution and find it to be a factor 1.6 +- 0.3 larger than that obtained by inelastic charged-current neutrino scattering. We then compare the Drell-Yan prediction with our data including the previously unexplored region of large x/sub F/ and find excellent agreement for a wide range of ..mu..-pair invariant mass.

Abstract

A measurement of continuum dimuon production in proton-copper collisions at 800-GeV incident energy is presented. The dimuons observed in this experiment cover the mass range from 6.5 to 18 GeV near {ital y}=0 in the proton-nucleon center-of-momentum frame. Scaling forms of the cross section for the continuum are compared with the results of other experiments in the context of the parton model and quantum chromodynamics. The present limitations of such scaling comparisons are discussed.

Abstract

The electron and the muon are the only charged particles which do not participate in the strong interaction, at present not fully understood nor amenable to rigorous calculation. Therefore measurements on the electron or muon in isolation, and on the μ+e− system (muonium) can give information on the fine structure constant α, free of doubts about the underlying theory. For the electron the anomalous magnetic moment ae = (g-2)/2 is a known function of α, and in principle provides the purest determination of this quantity. The corresponding quantity aμ for the muon cannot yet be measured so accurately, and the theory is subject to corrections due to the strong and weak interactions which are not accurately known. Nevertheless aμis important in the discussion of the fundamental constants for three reasons: (a) gμ ≡2(1 + aμ) is needed for calculating a from the hyperfine splitting in muonium; (b) aμ verifies quantum electrodynamics (QED) at high q2 ~(20 GeV/c)2 making it very unlikely that the theory will be at fault in the low q2 region appropriate for other measurements of fundamental constants; (c) corrections to ae and aμ due to modifications of QED, or to couplings to new fields in most cases satisfy1) the rule △ae = (me/mμ) △aμ. So the verification of aμ to 25 ppm validates ae to a much higher accuracy, thus ensuring that ae gives a good measure of α.

Abstract

Large aperture calorimeter measurements of high transverse momentum events from 100, 200 and 340 GeV pp collisions are reported. Yields are higher by one to two orders of magnitude than the yield expected from uncorrelated statistical fluctuations in multiparticle events. The exponential slopes of the yields versus xt exhibited a systematic change with s (x t = 2P t / s ) . The events are shown to be more diffuse than pure jets as produced in e+e− collisions. However, these events are consistent with a QCD-inspired 4-jet model.

14. Elastic Scattering of 1.2-BeV/cMuons from Hydrogen

Abstract

The absolute cross section for the elastic scattering of negative muons from protons was measured over a range of momentum transfers of 450 to 850 MeV/c. The muon beam was formed by decay in flight of Bevatron produced pions and was separated from the pion beam electronically by using four gas-filled threshold \ifmmode \check{C}\else \v{C}\fi{}erenkov counters. A total of 3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{8}$ muons were incident on two large liquid hydrogen targets in tandem and gave a total of 56\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9 acceptable scattering events, as compared to 48 predicted by the Rosenbluth formula for electromagnetic scattering from protons. A $\ensuremath{\chi}$-square analysis of the scattered events gave agreement at the 75% level for the angular distribution of the data and the theoretical predictions, and gave with 95% confidence ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{\le}0.16$ F, where ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ is the conventional breakdown parameter. Hence, in this experiment, the behavior of muons scattered from protons at large momentum transfers is indistinguishable from that of electrons.

15. Scattering of 2-Bev/cMuons in Carbon and Lead

Abstract

The scattering cross section of high-energy $\ensuremath{\mu}$ mesons in carbon and lead has been measured, using a pure, monoenergetic beam of muons obtained with the Bevatron at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. Preparation, purification, and measured properties of the beam are described. The median momentum was 2.00\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 Bev/c, the spread in momentum was not more than \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.5%, and the effective contamination due to pions was 4.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$. During the experiment the total number of muons incident on the apparatus was 2.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{7}$. Counter hodoscopes recorded the muons scattered from 14.4 g/${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ of lead and from 27 g/${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ of carbon. Inelastic as well as elastic processes were accepted. Scattered particles were observed at angles up to 12\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} (momentum transfer \ensuremath{\sim}400 Mev/c). The lead data cover the same range as those cosmic-ray experiments which have appeared to indicate an anomalously large scattering. No anomaly is found; the lead scattering agrees closely with the distribution calculated by Cooper and Rainwater for purely electromagnetic interactions. The carbon data permit a better comparison with theoretical expectations, since one is measuring the single-scattering cross section directly, and one can account for the effects of nuclear structure rather accurately, using electron-scattering data and a detailed theoretical analysis of Drell and Schwartz. The carbon scattering results, based on 300 events in the region 70 Mev/c-400 Mev/c momentum transfer, agree closely with the Drell-Schwartz theory. The upper limits which this result places on a nonelectromagnetic scattering cross section and on a muon form factor are discussed.

A measurement of the inelastic scattering of high-energy electrons in carbon has been carried out with the express purpose of obtaining an experimental cross section to compare with a recently-completed measurement of muon scattering. A scaling law which connects the electron result with the (higher-energy) muon result is described. Results for the summed (elastic plus all inelastic) cross section at two values of the muon scattering angle are presented. At the smaller angle (momentum transfer \ensuremath{\sim}200 Mev/c) agreement with the theoretical (Drell-Schwartz) sum rule is good; at the larger one (\ensuremath{\sim}280 Mev/c) it is poorer but within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Comparison with the muon results does not alter the previous conclusion: That no muon scattering anomaly is seen.

Abstract

The anomalous magnetic momenta≡1/2 (g−2) of the muon has been measured in the CERN muon storage ring. The result is (116 616±31)·10−8 compared with the theoretical value (116 588±2)·10−8 showing agreement to (240±270) parts per million. The lifetime of muons moving in a circular orbit with γ=12 was found to agree with the time dilation predicted by special relativity to within 1.1%. Details are given of the storage ring magnet, the instrumentation and the data analysis. The theoretical implications of the result are discussed.

Abstract

The single scattering of high-energy muons from emulsion nuclei was measured using a monoenergetic beam of muons produced at the Berkeley bevatron. The median momentum of muons was 2.00\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 Bev/c with a spread of no more than \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.5%. Nuclear emulsion stacks were exposed to this muon beam behind the targets used for a counter experiment. The results of the counter experiment were reported earlier. The muon tracks recorded in nuclear emulsions were followed by a special fast-scanning technique, and a total of 682 single scattering events were found from 743 meters of track following. For the muon beam accepted in the emulsion scanning, the pion contamination was measured to be 1.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2%. These pions contribute to the integral muon scattering data by about 3% for scattering angles greater than 1\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. The observed scattering distribution which extends up to 3\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} scattering angle, or momentum transfer of about 100 Mev/c, is in good agreement with the electromagnetic theory predictions and complements the counter experiment which covered momentum transfers of 70-400 Mev/c.

The mass spectrum of dimuons produced by 400 GeV/c protons in Tungsten has been measured for masses greater than 7 GeV. A clear resonant signal of 2700 upsilons has been seen. The dependence of dimuon production on xF and pT has been determined for dimuon masses in the range 7.0 to 8.25 GeV as well as for masses in the upsilon region 8.25 to 9.75 GeV.

The reactions {pi}+ p {yields} {pi}+ {hor_ellipsis} and {pi}+ p {yields} K+ {hor_ellipsis} will be studied over a wide range of the Feynman variables X, Q and S in order to test the conjectured scaling law for hadron collisions and study the form of the yield distributions. Particular attention will be paid to the vicinity of X = 0. The experiment will be carried out with a simple one-magnet spectrometer which takes full advantage of the kinematics and has wide acceptance and the capability of high precision.

Abstract

Data are presented on single particle distributions from the inclusive reactions π+p⇒π+… and π+p⇒p+… carried out at 10.0 and 15.5 GeV/c. All four pion charge combinations were studied at both energies. Data are available for x≥0 and for transverse momenta up to 0.9 GeV/c. Positive identification of final state particles was accomplished with a Cerenkov counter and time of flight system. Production angles and momentum were measured with spark chambers, proportional chamber and a large aperture magnet.

Abstract

The NA34 (HELIOS) calorimeter has measured e/{pi} {congruent} 1.1 in a uranium/liquid argon calorimeter with a shaping time of 135 nsec. Lead may be a viable alternative, but e/{pi} must first be measured at fast shaping times in lead. We re preparing to measure e/{pi} at momenta ranging from 0.5 to 20 GeV/c and with shaping times of 50, 100 and 150 nsec.
