Abstract

The inclusive production of ρ0 mesons was measured in γp andh ± p collisions at beam energies of 65 GeV≦E γ≦175 GeV andE h =80, 140 GeV, respectively, whereh is π orK. Cross sections were determined for all beams and energies as functions ofx F (−0.1≦x F≦1.0),p T (0≦p T≦3.5 GeV/c) and the polar decay angle of the ρ0 by fitting the ρ0 signal in π+π- mass distributions. The ρ0 line shape is found to be distorted from a pure Breit-Wigner distribution throughout most of thex F−p T plane for both photon and hadron beams and a simple explanation is suggested. Throughout the paper emphasis is put on the comparison of photon and hadron beam data. The comparison of cross sections of γp andhp data provides a measure of the Vector Meson Dominance factor throughout thex F−p T range of the ρ0. The ρ0 production at lowp T can be described for both photon and hadron beams by a triple regge model at largex F. Similarly central production is well described by the quark-antiquark fusion model. At largep T there is an excess of ρ0 photoproduction which is consistent with the expected onset of pointlike photon interactions.

Abstract

The reactions γp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0 have been measured with the multiparticle detector system SAPHIR at ELSA in Bonn. Besides the differential cross sections the Λ polarization and, for the first time, the Σ0 polarization have been determined in a photon induced reaction. All data are presented as functions of the photon energy (from threshold up to 2.1 GeV) and of the Kaon production angle (00−1800). The polarization of both Λ and Σ0 is substantial at all energies and varies strongly with the production angle.

Abstract

The reactions γp→K+K−π0(p) and γp→ Ks0K± π±(p) have been measured using tagged photons in the energy range 20 to 70 GeV. No resonance structure is observed in either of the KKπ invariant mass distributions, which range from threshold up to ∼ 3 GeV. The photoproduction cross sections for φπ0 and K∗(892)K are presented and are compared with theoretical predictions. No evidence has been found for the photoproduction of φ′ (1680).

Abstract

Measurements of the reaction γp → pωπ+π− are reported for photon energies 25–50 GeV. Particular attention is paid to ωπ+π− masses < 2 GeV. A search is made for ω′ or φ′ partners of the ϱ′(1600). Evidence is presented against the existence of narrow states and against the production of a broad state by an s-channel helicity conserving mechanism.

Abstract

This paper reports studies of the reactions γp→ρ π π πp and γp→ρ ρ πp. In particular a peak is reported in the ρ ρ π mass spectrum with closely similar mass and width to those of the ω ρ π peak previously reported in the reaction γp→ω ρ πp. The ratio of production cross sections is found to be ρ ρ π/ω ρ π=0.96±0.19, in serious disagreement with the expectation from Vector Meson Dominance. A possible explanation is indicated.

Abstract

A peak is reported in the {ce:inline-formula}ηπ +π-{/ce:inline-formula} system, produced in the reaction {ce:inline-formula}γp ηπ +π -p{/ce:inline-formula}, at a mass of {ce:inline-formula}1.28 ± 0.01GeV{/ce:inline-formula} with a width of {ce:inline-formula}0.08 ± 0.02GeV{/ce:inline-formula}. Possible spin-parity assignments for the peak are shown to be {ce:inline-formula}J π = 1 -, J π = 1 +orJ π = 2 +{/ce:inline-formula} and interpretations of these assignments are discussed.

Abstract

It is shown that a likely interpretation of theb1± π∓ mass spectrum from diffractive photoproduction is that it is due to contributions from the ω3(1670), in accord with corresponding production of the ρ3(1690), and from a further peak with a mass of 1.88±0.04 GeV and a width ≦0.3 GeV. The possibility that this latter peak can be due to a group of\(q\bar qg\) hybrid states, as proposed by Isgur and Paton, is explored.

Abstract

The photoproduction of the final state ω π+π−π0 has been studied as part of a survey of photoproduction in the energy range 20–70 GeV in the Omega spectrometer at CERN. The π+π−π0 system produced with the ω meson has a strongρ±π± component which is predominantlyI=1 andJπ=1+. For theωρ±π∓ state a spin-parity analysis favoursJπ=1−, and the mass spectrum peaks at 2.28±0.05 GeV. The fitted width is Γ=0.44±0.11 GeV. The photoproduction cross-section of theωρ±π∓ state, averaged over the energy range 25–60 GeV, is 150±50 nb.

Abstract

A study is made of photoproduction of ϱϱ, ϱf, ϱω and ωω systems, produced with masses 1.8 GeV at high Feynman xF by photons of energy 20–70 GeV. There is evidence for a peak at a mass of ∼ 2.3 GeV with a width of ∼ 0.25 GeV in ϱ0f0and ϱ±f0 combinations. Angular distributions, in the 4π CM system, are found to be isotropic for these states, in sharp contrast to the strongly peaked angular distribution found for ϱ0ϱ0 combinations at the same mass.

Abstract

An apparatus has been built to determine the energy of each photon in a bremsstrahlung spectrum which produces an interaction of interest in a hydrogen target. The technique was applied specifically to charged pion photoproduction with photons of 2 to 5 BeV. The tagging system utilized a monoenergetic (to ± 1%) positron beam which produced photons and associated recoil positrons in a thin radiator. The recoil positrons were momentum analyzed and detected by a 19‐counter hodoscope. The difference between the energies of an incident and a recoil positron is the photon energy, and this was determined to ±2.5%. Since the photon beam is relatively weak, the interactions it produces must be detected with good efficiency. Such a large‐solid‐angle spark chamber, magnet, and counter system, which was used to measure the photoproduced pions, is also described.

Abstract

Inclusive production of ϱ0, ω, and ϱ± at low transverse momentum has been measured in γp collisions with photons of energy 20 to 70 GeV. The vector mesons have been studied as functions of the Feynman variable χF, varying between −0.2 and 0.95, i.e. excluding the “elastic” peaks of ϱ0 and ω photoproduction. For χF ≲ 0.6 the vector meson cross sections are approximately equal; that is, σ(ϱ0) ≈ σ(ω) ≈ 12[σ(ϱ+) + σ(ϱ−)]. For χF > 0.6, it is observed that σ(ϱ0) > σ(ω) ⩾ 12[σ(ϱ+) + σ(ϱ−)] and the differences increase with increasing χF. Over the χF range −0.2 < χF < 0.95 the vector mesons are produced similarly to non-diffractive leading particles in hadron-hadron collisions with an extra diffractive component in ϱ0 and ω production.

Abstract

Inclusive photoproduction of ϕ,K *0(890), $$\bar K*^0 $$ andK *0(1420), $$\bar K*^0 $$ has been studied in γp collisions with photons of energy 20 to 70 GeV and in the range 0.1≦x F ≦0.95 [0.4≦x F ≦0.8 for the $$\mathop K\limits^{( - )} *$$ (1420)],x F being the Feynman variable of the vector/tensor meson. The cross-sections for these processes, averaged over the photon energy range and integrated overx F are given. The inclusive ϕ production in the forward direction can be described quantitatively by a triple-Regge model calculation. The remaining ϕ production and the totalK *0(890) and $$\bar K*^0 $$ production are consistent with a quark fusion picture.
