Abstract

International audience; The low-spin structure of the semimagic Ni64 nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N=40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the $^{7}$Be(n, p)$^{7}$Li cross section from thermal to approximately 325 keV neutron energy, performed in the high-flux experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN. This reaction plays a key role in the lithium yield of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) for standard cosmology. The only two previous time-of-flight measurements performed on this reaction did not cover the energy window of interest for BBN, and they showed a large discrepancy between each other. The measurement was performed with a Si telescope and a high-purity sample produced by implantation of a 7Be ion beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. While a significantly higher cross section is found at low energy, relative to current evaluations, in the region of BBN interest, the present results are consistent with the values inferred from the time-reversal $^{7}$Li(p, n)$^{7}$Be reaction, thus yielding only a relatively minor improvement on the so-called cosmological lithium problem. The relevance of these results on the nearthreshold neutron production in the p + $^{7}$Li reaction is also discussed.

Abstract

A recent set-up of a multi-cathode Frisch-grid ionization chamber and experimental results of a proof-of-principle experiment are presented. Preliminary data on the obtained polar angular and mass distributions as well as total kinetic energy of fission fragments produced in neutron-induced fission of 232Th and 238U are discussed that show that the chamber has been operated successfully. For the additional measurement of the azimuthal angular distribution, a design of segmented anodes has been tested. Preliminary data do not allow a suffcient reconstruction of the azimuthal angle. At the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics facility (ELI-NP), high-power laser systems together with high-brilliance gamma beams are the main research tools. The status of the construction of the facility is reported. The emerging photofission experimental program with brilliant gamma beams at ELI-NP is presented with emphasis on the prepared day-one experiments. Abstract

A novel detector has been used, in order to perform measurements of spontaneous fission to α-decay ratios for 240Pu, 242Pu and 252Cf isotopes. The detectors are based on the well-known technique of liquid scintillating counting. The principle and advantages of the use of such detectors in nuclear physics is discussed. The application to the characterization of spontaneous fission is described and it is demonstrated that highly precise measurements are possible, and that the main limit is due to the isotopic content knowledge of the measured samples. Abstract

This paper describes the production and chemical separation of the 163Ho isotope that will be used in several nuclear physics experiments aiming at measuring the neutrino mass as well as the neutron cross section of the 163Ho isotope. For this purpose, several batches of enriched 162Er have been irradiated at the Institut Laue-Langevin high flux reactor to finally produce 6 mg or 100 MBq of the desired 163Ho isotope. A portion of the Er/Ho mixture is then subjected to a sophisticated chemical separation involving ion exchange chromatography to isolate the Ho product from the Er target material. Before irradiation, a thorough analysis of the impurity content was performed and its implication on the produced nuclide inventory will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

4 pages, 3 figures.-- PMID: 15650733 [PubMed]., In the centres of stars where the temperature is high enough, three α-particles (helium nuclei) are able to combine to form C-12 because of a resonant reaction leading to a nuclear excited state. (Stars with masses greater than ~ 0.5 times that of the Sun will at some point in their lives have a central temperature high enough for this reaction to proceed). Although the reaction rate is of critical significance for determining elemental abundances in the Universe, and for determining the size of the iron core of a star just before it goes supernova, it has hitherto been insufficiently determined. Here we report a measurement of the inverse process, where a C-12 nucleus decays to three α-particles. We find a dominant resonance at an energy of ~ 11 MeV, but do not confirm the presence of a resonance at 9.1 MeV (ref. 3). We show that interference between two resonances has important effects on our measured spectrum. Using these data, we calculate the triple-α rate for temperatures from 10^7 K to 10^10 K and find significant deviations from the standard rates. Our rate below ~ 5 x 10^7 K is higher than the previous standard, implying that the critical amounts of carbon that catalysed hydrogen burning in the first stars are produced twice as fast as previously believed. Yields of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe isotopic chains were measured from UC$_{x}$/graphite and ThC$_{x}$/graphite targets at the PSB-ISOLDE facility at CERN using isobaric selectivity achieved by the combination of a plasma-discharge ion source with a water-cooled transfer line. %The measured half-lives allowed %to calculate the decay losses of neutron-rich isotopes in the %target and ion-source system, and thus to obtain information on the in-target %productions from the measured yields. Abstract

The energy distributions and yields of light charged particles emitted during thermal neutron induced fission of 245Cm have been measured at the high flux reactor of the Institute Laue Langevin in Grenoble (France). The detection of the ternary particles was done using a Delta-E/E telescope, permitting a good separation of the ternary particles. In this way, the characteristics of the energy distribution (average energy and full width at half maximum) for 4He, 3H and 6He particles as well as their emission probabilities could be determined. For the emission probabilities per fission, the following values were obtained: LRA/B=(2.15+-0.05)E-3, 3H/B=(1.85+-0.10)E-4 and 6He/B=(4.95+-1.25)E-5.

Abstract

In spite of the huge amount of fission yield data available in different libraries, more accurate values are still needed for nuclear energy applications and to improve our understanding of the fission process. Thus measurements of fission yields were performed at the mass spectrometer Lohengrin at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. The mass separator Lohengrin is situated at the research reactor of the institute and permits the placement of an actinide layer in a high thermal neutron flux. It separates fragments according to their atomic mass, kinetic energy and ionic charge state by the action of magnetic and electric fields. Coupled to a high resolution ionization chamber the experiment was used to investigate the mass and isotopic yields in the light mass region. Almost all fission yields of isotopes from Th to Cf have been measured at Lohengrin with this method. It has been extended in this work to the heavy mass region for the reactions 235U(nth,f), 239Pu(nth,f), and 241Pu(nth,f). For these higher masses an isotopic separation is no longer possible. So, a new method was undertaken with the reaction 239Pu(nth,f) to determine the isotopic yields by γ spectrometry. The results are presented in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Some neutrons are emitted from fission fragments several seconds to several minutes after fission occurs. These delayed neutrons play a key role for the conduct and in safety aspects of nuclear reactors [1]. But the probabilities to emit such neutrons (Pn) are not well known. A summary of different database and compilation of Pn values is presented to show these discrepancies and uncertainties. Experiments are carried out at the Lohengrin mass spectrometer (at Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble) and at the ISOLDE facility (CERN) in order to measure some Pn values. Two different techniques are used: either by using gamma-rays detection or neutron emission detection. These two techniques and some preliminary results are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The reduced transition probabilities between the first excited 2+ state and the 0+ ground state, B(E2;0+→2+), have been measured in 106,108,110Sn using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at REX-ISOLDE. The results are, B(E2;0+→2+) = 0.220(22), 0.226(17), and 0.228(32)e2b2, for 110Sn, 108Sn, and 106Sn, respectively. The results for 106,108Sn are preliminary. De-excitation γ-rays were detected by the MINIBALL Ge-array. The B(E2) reveals detailed information about the nuclear wave function. A shell model prediction based on an effective CD-Bonn interaction in the ν(0g7/2,2s,1d,0h11/2) model space using eeffν = 1.0 e follows the experimental values for the neutron rich Sn isotopes, but fails to reproduce the results presented here. Frequency ratio measurements with different combinations of the singly charged ions from 21, 22, 23Na , 22, 24Mg , and 37, 39K were performed at the on-line Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP, CERN, Geneva. The masses and mass differences were deduced with a relative uncertainty of about or even below one part in 108 for the ions of interest using a least-squares analysis of all measured relations. The results have direct consequences for weak-interaction study as they give additional input to the test of CVC, and for nuclear astrophysics, because they help to establish the minimum observable signal for a NeNa cycle in a nova burst. Abstract

We report on the first use of post-accelerated radioactive isomeric beams. Long-lived isomeric states in 68Cu and 70Cu have been produced and separated at ISOLDE, CERN. Subsequently they were post-accelerated to 2.86 MeV/u and sent to a target in the center of the MINIBALL spectrometer, used for the detection of the γ-rays of interest. The preliminary results from the Coulomb excitation of the Iπ=6-, 1+ states in 68Cu and the Iπ=6- one in 70Cu, compared to a large-scale shell model calculations, hint the importance of the excitations across the Z=28 gap for the understanding of the nuclear structure in the neutron-rich N=40 region. Abstract

The fast timing βγγ( t) method was applied to investigate the level lifetimes in 30,31,32Mg. Levels in Mg have been populated in β and β-delayed neutron emission of Na at the ISOLDE facility. From the γγ coincidences a number of new states have been identified and new level schemes were constructed for 30,31,32Mg. The following preliminary half lives have been determined: T1/2 = 3.9(4) ns for the 1789 keV state in 30Mg, T1/2 = 133(8) ps and 10.5(8) ns for the 221 keV and 461 keV states in 31Mg, respectively, and T1/2 = 16(4) ps for the 885 keV level in 32Mg. The 1789 keV level was established as a candidate for the intruder 0+ configuration in 30Mg with a possible strong E0 branch to the ground state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) of the ISOLDE on-line isotope separation facility is based on the method of laser step-wise resonance ionization of atoms in a hot metal cavity. The atomic selectivity of the RILIS complements the mass selection process of the ISOLDE separator magnets to provide beams of a chosen isotope with greatly reduced isobaric contamination. Using a system of dye lasers pumped by copper vapour lasers, ion beams of 24 elements have been generated at ISOLDE with ionization efficiencies in the range of 0.5–15%. As part of the ongoing RILIS development off-line resonance ionization spectroscopy studies carried out in 2003 and 2004 have determined the optimal three-step ionization schemes for scandium, antimony, dysprosium and yttrium. Abstract

Many elements are rapidly released from oxide matrices. Some oxide powder targets show a fast sintering, thus losing their favorable release characteristics. Loosely packed oxide fiber targets are less critical since they may maintain their open structure even when starting to fuse together at some contact points.The experience with various oxide fiber targets (titania, zirconia, ceria and thoria) used in the last years at ISOLDE is reviewed. For short-lived isotopes of Cu, Ga and Xe the zirconia and ceria targets respectively provided significantly higher yields than any other target (metal foils, oxide powders, etc.) tested before.Titania fibers, which were not commercially available, were produced in a relic process by impregnation of a rayon felt in a titanium chloride solution and subsequent calcination by heating the dried felt in air. Thoria fibers were obtained either by the same process or by burning commercial gas lantern mantle cloth.In the future a beryllia fiber target could be used to produce very intense 6He beams (order of 1013 ions per second) via the 9Be(n,α) reaction using spallation neutrons. ISOL beams of 19-22O were produced at ISOLDE and GANIL. At ISOLDE the neutron-rich oxygen isotopes are produced by 1.4 GeV proton-induced reactions in a UCx/graphite target. The target is connected via a water-cooled transfer line (to retain all non-volatile isobars) to an ISOLDE type FEBIAD ion source where the released CO is dominantly ionized as CO+. 19-22O beams were also produced at SPIRAL (GANIL). A 77.5 MeV/nucleon 36S beam was fragmented in a thick graphite target, coupled by a cold transfer tube to an ECR ion source which ionizes the released CO dominantly as O+ and CO+. Abstract

International audience; The neutron capture cross sections of several unstable nuclides acting as branching points in the s process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies. The unstable Tm171 (t1/2=1.92 yr) is part of the branching around mass A∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. In this work, following the production for the first time of more than 5 mg of Tm171 at the high-flux reactor Institut Laue-Langevin in France, a sample was produced at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Two complementary experiments were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF) at CERN in Switzerland and at the SARAF liquid lithium target facility at Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Israel by time of flight and activation, respectively. The result of the time-of-flight experiment consists of the first ever set of resonance parameters and the corresponding average resonance parameters, allowing us to make an estimation of the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) by extrapolation. The activation measurement provides a direct and more precise measurement of the MACS at 30 keV: 384(40) mb, with which the estimation from the n_TOF data agree at the limit of 1 standard deviation. This value is 2.6 times lower than the JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII evaluations, 25% lower than that of the Bao et al. compilation, and 1.6 times larger than the value recommended in the KADoNiS (v1) database, based on the only previous experiment. Our result affects the nucleosynthesis at the A∼170 branching, namely, the Yb171 abundance increases in the material lost by asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a better match to the available pre-solar SiC grain measurements compared to the calculations based on the current JEFF-3.3 model-based evaluation.

The 86Se nucleus has been investigated by γ-ray spectroscopy using an array of Ge detectors placed at the exit of the fission-fragment mass separator Lohengrin of the Institut Laue-Langevin. New transitions have been identified by studying the β decay of 86As. An excitation scheme is proposed and includes a 22+ level at 1399 keV and a possible 3+ level that are well reproduced by shell model calculations with the most recent parametrization. Abstract

Despite the huge number of fission yield data available in the different evaluated nuclear data libraries, such as JEFF-3.1.1, ENDF/B-VII.0, and JENDL-4.0, more accurate data are still needed both for nuclear energy applications and for our understanding of the fission process itself. It is within the framework of this that measurements on the recoil mass spectrometer Lohengrin (at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France) was undertaken, to determine isotopic yields for the heavy fission products from the 239Pu(nth,f) reaction. In order to do this, a new experimental method based on γ-ray spectrometry was developed and validated by comparing our results with those performed in the light mass region with completely different setups. Hence, about 65 fission product yields were measured with an uncertainty that has been reduced on average by a factor of 2 compared to that previously available in the nuclear data libraries. In addition, for some fission products, a strongly deformed ionic charge distribution compared to a normal Gaussian shape was found, which was interpreted as being caused by the presence of a nanosecond isomeric state. Finally, a nuclear charge polarization has been observed in agreement, with the one described on other close fissioning systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The β-delayed triple-α particle decay of 12B has been measured with a setup that favours coincidence detection. A broad state in 12C, previously reported around 10 MeV, has been seen and its properties determined through R-matrix analysis of the excitation spectrum. The spin and parity are . Interference between this state and the Hoyle state at 7.654 MeV has a marked influence on the spectrum. The coupling between the two states makes it difficult to determine the resonance energy. Abstract

Neutron-rich thallium, lead, and bismuth isotopes were investigated at the ISOLDE facility. After mass separation and resonant laser ionisation of the produced activity, new spectroscopic data were obtained for 215,218Bi and 215Pb. An attempt to reach heavy thallium had to be abandoned because of a strong francium component in the beam that gave rise to a neutron background through (α,n) reactions on the aluminium walls of the experimental chamber. Abstract

International audience; The absolute neutrino mass is still an unknown parameter in the modern landscape of particle physics. The HOLMES experiment aims at exploiting the calorimetric approach to directly measure the neutrino mass through the kinematic measurement of the decay products of the weak process decay of $^{163}$Ho. This low energy decaying isotope, in fact, undergoes electron capture emitting a neutrino and leaving the daughter atom, $^{163}$Dy$^*$, in an atomic excited state. This, in turn, relaxes by emitting electrons and, to a considerably lesser extent, photons. The high-energy portion of the calorimetric spectrum of this decay is affected by the non-vanishing neutrino mass value. Given the small fraction of events falling within the region of interest, to achieve a high experimental sensitivity on the neutrino mass, it is important to have a high activity combined with a very small undetected pileup contribution. To achieve these targets, the final configuration of HOLMES foresees the deployment of a large number of $^{163}$Ho ion-implanted TESs characterized by an ambitiously high activity of 300 Hz each. In this paper, we outline the status of the major tasks that will bring HOLMES to achieve a statistical sensitivity on the neutrino mass as low as 2 eV/c$^2$.

Abstract

This paper describes the production and chemical separation of the 163Ho isotope that will be used in several nuclear physics experiments aiming at measuring the neutrino mass as well as the neutron cross section of the 163Ho isotope. For this purpose, several batches of enriched 162Er have been irradiated at the Institut Laue-Langevin high flux reactor to finally produce 6 mg or 100 MBq of the desired 163Ho isotope. A portion of the Er/Ho mixture is then subjected to a sophisticated chemical separation involving ion exchange chromatography to isolate the Ho product from the Er target material. Before irradiation, a thorough analysis of the impurity content was performed and its implication on the produced nuclide inventory will be discussed.

Abstract

The assessment of neutrino absolute mass scale is still a crucial challenge in today particle physics and cosmology. Beta or electron capture spectrum end-point study is currently the only experimental method which can provide a model independent measurement of the absolute scale of neutrino mass. HOLMES is an experiment funded by the European Research Council to directly measure the neutrino mass. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the electron capture decay of the artificial isotope $^{163}$Ho. In a calorimetric measurement the energy released in the decay process is entirely contained into the detector, except for the fraction taken away by the neutrino. This approach eliminates both the issues related to the use of an external source and the systematic uncertainties arising from decays on excited final states. The most suitable detectors for this type of measurement are low temperature thermal detectors, where all the energy released into an absorber is converted into a temperature increase that can be measured by a sensitive thermometer directly coupled with the absorber. This measurement was originally proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only in the last decade the technological progress in detectors development has allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES plans to deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted $^{163}$Ho nuclei. The achievable neutrino mass statistical sensitivity is expected in the eV range, thereby making HOLMES an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach as an alternative to spectrometry. HOLMES will also establish the potential of this approach to achieve a sub-eV sensitivity. HOLMES is designed to collect about 3 × 1013 decays with an instrumental energy resolution around 1 eV FWHM and a time resolution around 1 µs. To achieve this in three years of measuring time, HOLMES is going to deploy 16 sub-arrays of TES microcalorimeters. Each sub-array has 64 pixels ion implanted with 163Ho nuclei to give a pixel activity of 300 Bq per pixel. The TES arrays are read out using microwave multiplexed rf-SQUIDs in combination with a Software Designed Radio data acquisition system. The commissioning of the first implanted sub-array is scheduled for 2018 and it will provide first high statistics data about the EC decay of 163Ho together with a preliminary limit on the neutrino mass. In this contribution we outline the HOLMES project with its physics reach and technical challenges, along with its status and perspectives. In particular we will present the status of the HOLMES activities concerning the 163Ho isotope production by neutron irradiation and purification, the TES pixel design and optimization, the multiplexed array read-out characterization, the cryogenic set-up installation, and the setting up of the mass separation and ion implantation system for the isotope embedding in the TES absorbers.

Abstract

HOLMES is a new experiment aiming at directly measuring the neutrino mass with a sensitivity below 2 eV. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the decay of $^{163}$Ho. The calorimetric measurement eliminates systematic uncertainties arising from the use of external beta sources, as in experiments with spectrometers. This measurement was proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only recently the detector technological progress has allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES will deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted $^{163}$Ho nuclei. HOLMES, besides being an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach, will also establish the potential of this approach to extend the sensitivity down to 0.1 eV and lower. In its final configuration HOLMES will collect about $3\cdot 10^{13}$ decays with 1000 detectors characterized by an instrumental energy resolution of the order of few eV and a time resolution of few microseconds. To embed the $^{163}$Ho into the gold absorbers a custom mass separator ion implanter is being developed. The detectors used for the HOLMES experiment will be Mo/Cu bilayers TESs (Transition Edge Sensors) on SiN$_x$ membrane with gold absorbers. Microwave multiplexed rf-SQUIDs are the best available technique to read out large array of such detectors. An extensive R&D activity is in progress in order to maximize the multiplexing factor while preserving the performances of the individual detectors. The current activities are focused on the the single detector performances optimization and on the $^{163}$Ho isotope production and embedding. A preliminary measurement of a sub-array of $4\times 16$ detectors is planned late in 2017. In this contribution we present the HOLMES project with its technical challenges, its status and perspectives.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of several key unstable isotopes acting as branching points in the s-process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies, but they are very challenging to measure due to the difficult production of sufficient sample material, the high activity of the resulting samples, and the actual (n,γ ) measurement, for which high neutron fluxes and effective background rejection capabilities are required. As part of a new program to measure some of these important branching points, radioactive targets of 147Pm and 171Tm have been produced by irradiation of stable isotopes at the ILL high flux reactor. Neutron capture on 146Nd and 170Er at the reactor was followed by beta decay and the resulting matrix was purified via radiochemical separation at PSI. The radioactive targets have been used for time-of-flight measurements at the CERN n TOF facility using the 19 and 185m beam lines during 2014 and 2015. The capture cascades were detected using a set of four C6D6 scintillators, allowing to observe the associated neutron capture resonances. The results presented in this work are the first ever determination of the resonance capture cross section of 147Pm and 171Tm. Activation experiments on the same 147Pm and 171Tm targets with a high-intensity 30 keV quasi-Maxwellian flux of neutrons will be performed using the SARAF accelerator and the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) in order to extract the corresponding Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS). Abstract

The main goal in the HOLMES experiment is the neutrino mass measurement using an array of 1000 micro-calorimeters with standard metallic absorber. A good isotope for such measurement is the 163 Ho, those isotopes embedded in the metallic absorber will be 10 11 –10 13 . Since 163 Ho is not available in nature, a dedicated process must be set up to produce the amount needed for this neutrino mass experiment. The process with the highest born-up cross-section is the neutron irradiation of Er 2 O 3 enriched in 162 Er: 162 Er(n,γ) 163 Er → 163 Ho+ν e , where the decay is an EC with half-life of about 75 min and the (n,γ) is about 20 barns for thermal neutron. After the neutron irradiation in the oxide powder there are several radioactive isotopes which are potentially disturbing because of the background that they cause below 5 keV. The chemical separation of holmium from the irradiation enriched Er 2 O 3 powder is therefore mandatory and will be performed by means of ion exchange chromatography. On the end of those processes the oxide powder enriched in 162 Er will have the 163 Ho isotope number required. The holmium chemical state influences the end point of the EC spectrum, in order to avoid such effect it is necessary to embed in the absorber only the metallic isotope. Reduction and distillation technique allowed us to obtain a pure metallic holmium, starting from natural oxide holmium. This technique will be applied on the irradiated oxide powder to obtain the metallic 163 Ho, ready to be embedded in the micro-calorimeter absorber.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of some unstable nuclei is especially relevant for s-process nucleosynthesis studies. This magnitude is crucial to determine the local abundance pattern, which can yield valuable information of the s-process stellar environment. In this work we describe the neutron capture (n,γ) measurement on two of these nuclei of interest, 204Tl and 171Tm, from target production to the final measurement, performed successfully at the n_TOF facility at CERN in 2014 and 2015. Preliminary results on the ongoing experimental data analysis will also be shown. These results include the first ever experimental observation of capture resonances for these two nuclei.
