Abstract

Mass and energy distributions of fission and quasifission fragments in the reactions 22Ne+249Cf, 26Mg+248Cm, 36S+238U and 58Fe+208Pb leading to the formation of the Z = 108 composite nucleus are reported. In this series of experiments it is shown for the first time that the quasifission process leads to the formation of not only asymmetric fragments but also gives a contribution to the symmetric mass region of fission fragments, most probably caused by the influence of nuclear shells with Z = 50 and N = 82. Abstract

Thirty-four new nuclides with Z = 104–116, 118 and N = 161–177 have been synthesized in the complete-fusion reactions of 238U, 237Np, 242,244Pu, 243Am, 245,248Cm, and 249Cf targets with 48Ca beams. The masses of evaporation residues were identified through measurements of the excitation functions of the xn-evaporation channels and from cross bombardments. The decay properties of the new nuclei agree with those of previously known heavy nuclei and with predictions from different theoretical models. A discussion of self-consistent interpretations of all observed decay chains originating from the parent isotopes 282,283112, 282113, 286–289114, 287,288115, 290–293116, and 294118 is presented. Decay energies and lifetimes of the neutron-rich superheavy nuclei as well as their production cross sections indicate a considerable increase in the stability of nuclei with the approach to the theoretically predicted nuclear shells with N = 184 and Z = 114. Abstract

Average preequilibrium npreeq> average statistical prescission nstpre> and postscission npost> neutron multiplicities as well as average γ-ray multiplicity , average energy emitted by γ-rays and average energy per one gamma quantum <[variant_greek_epsilon]γ> as a function of mass and total kinetic energy (TKE) of fission fragments were measured in the proton-induced reactions p+232Th→233Pa, p+238U→239Np and p+242Pu→243Am (at proton energy Ep=13, 20, 40 and 55 MeV). The fragment mass and energy distributions (MEDs) have been analyzed in terms of the multimodal fission. The decomposition of the experimental MEDs onto the MEDs of the distinct modes has been fulfilled in the framework of a method that is free from any parameterization of the distinct fission mode mass distribution shapes. The main characteristics for symmetric and asymmetric modes have been studied in their dependence on the compound nucleus composition and proton energy. Abstract

Available data on evaporation residue (ER) production and fission in a wide region of compound nucleus (CN) masses and entrance-channel mass-asymmetry values have been analyzed in search for the “starting point”, where the fusion suppression due to the quasi-fission (QF) effect starts to show up. Comparing cross sections for the ER production and fission in reactions leading to the same CN, but having different values of entrance-channel mass-asymmetry, one can extract the fusion probability for a more symmetric combination with respect to quite an asymmetric one, where no limitation seems to occur. An attempt to find correlations between the fusion probabilities derived for the considered combinations and some entrance-channel characteristics is undertaken. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental results on the fusion inhibition effect near the Coulomb barrier due to the onset of the quasi-fission mechanism are presented. The investigation was focused on reactions induced by 48Ca projectiles on different heavy targets and comparing them to reactions induced by light ions such as 12C and 16O leading to the same compound nuclei. Abstract

Results of the experiments aimed at the study of fission and quasi-fission processes in the reactions 12C+204Pb, 48Ca+144,154Sm, 168Er, 208Pb, 238U, 244Pu, 248Cm; 58Fe+208Pb, 244Pu, 248Cm, and 64Ni+186W, 242Pu are presented. The choice of the above-mentioned reactions was inspired by the experiments on the production of the isotopes 283112, 289114 and 283116 at Dubna using the same reactions. The 58Fe and 64Ni projectiles were chosen since the corresponding projectile-target combinations lead to the synthesis of even heavier elements. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR, Russia), the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL, Italy) and the Accelerator of the Laboratory of University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL, Finland) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET and the neutron multi-detector DEMON. Abstract

Mass and energy distributions of binary fragments are discussed for a wide range of nuclei with Z = 82–122 produced in reactions induced by 12C, 16O, 26Mg, 48Ca, 50Ti, 58Fe, 64Ni and 86Kr ions at energies close and below the Coulomb barrier. Abstract

We have studied the dependence of the production cross-sections of the isotopes 282, 283112 and 286-288114 on the excitation energy of the compound nuclei 286112 and 290114. The maximum cross-sections of the xn-evaporation channels for the reaction 238 U(48 Ca, xn)286-x112 were measured to be: σ3n = 2.5+1.8-1.1pb and σ4n = 0.6+1.6-0.5pb; for the reaction 242 Pu(48 Ca, xn)290-x114: σ2n ∼ 0.5pb, σ3n = 3.6+3.4-1.7pb and σ4n = 4.5+3.6-1.9pb. In the reaction 233 U(48 Ca, 2-4 n)277-279112 we measured an upper cross-section limit of σxn≤0.6pb. An increase of σER in the reactions of actinide targets with 48Ca can be due to the expected increase of the survivability of the excited compound nucleus upon closer approach to the closed neutron shell N = 184. The observed nuclear decay properties of the nuclides with Z = 104-118 are compared with theoretical nuclear mass calculations and the systematic trends of α-decay properties. As a whole, they give a consistent pattern of decay of the 18 even- Z neutron-rich nuclides with Z = 104-118 and N = 163-177. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The upgraded separator VASSILISSA was used to confirm results of previous experiments on the synthesis of the heavy isotopes of the element 112 obtained in complete-fusion reactions of 48Ca and 238U. An additional reason was the non-observation of any events in the same reaction studied with the BGS separator at Berkeley. Limits of 280 < A < 286 for the atomic mass number of the observed spontaneously fissioning isotope were measured. The obtained results on the decay mode, half-life and production cross-section are in agreement with those obtained in our first experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The process of fusion-fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei (SHE) with Z = 82-122 formed in the reactions with [SUP48]Ca and [SUP58]Fe ions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier has been studied. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR) and at the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET and the neutron multidetector DEMON. As a result of the experiments, mass and energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments; fission, quasifission, and evaporation residue cross sections; and multiplicities of neutrons and γ-quanta and their dependences on the mechanism of formation and decay of compound systems have been studied. To study basic properties of the fusion reaction dynamics for heavy compound systems the partial-wave distribution σell can be employed as an alternative to the classically used fusion/fission excitation functions. A variety of reactions leading to compound nuclei (CN) in the Pb region can be used to investigate features like the fusion-fission competition, the role of deformation in the fusion of heavy systems and a possible effect of the Z 82 shell on the enhancement of evaporation residue (ER) production. Abstract

The pathway toward the production of superheavy elements (SHE) crosses with the one of an in-depth study of the fission and quasifission processes. Quasifission affects the probability of forming a compound nucleus (CN) after capture and fission plays a decisive role during the cooling of the CN. To search for optimal reactions to produce SHE in fusion reactions and to provide an estimate of their production cross section measurements of the capture and fusion cross sections along with the survival probabilities are a mandatory task. Here an overview of the impact of fission and quasifission over the synthesis of SHE is discussed along with the need to perform measurements over a wide range of masses and energies.

Abstract

The mass-energy distributions and cross sections of proton-induced fission of Th-232 have been measured at the proton energies of 7, 10, 13, 20, 40, and 55 MeV. Experiments were carried out at the proton beam of the K-130 cyclotron of the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvakyla and U-150m cyclotron of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The yields of fission fragments in the mass range A = 60- 170 a.m.u. have been measured up to the level of 10(-4)%. The three humped shape of the mass distribution up has been observed at higher proton energies. The contribution of the symmetric component grows up with increasing proton incident energy; although even at 55 MeV of proton energy the shoulders in the mass energy distribution clearly indicate the asymmetric fission peaks. Evolution of shell structure was observed in the fission fragment mass distributions even at high excitation energy.

Abstract

The scope of this review is to summarize the main advancements in the search of signatures of the compound nucleus fission and quasifission processes in heavy and superheavy systems. The understanding of fusion and fission in heavy and superheavy elements is needed for tracing paths aimed at reaching the island of stability situated near Z = 114-122 and N = 184. With increasing charge of the interacting nuclei other processes, like quasifission, emerge and compete against fusion. Hence also their study must be pursued. After a brief look at the experimental techniques, the behavior of several observables is extracted from the most recent data to aid in the disentanglement of the various competing processes which hinder the production of superheavy elements.
