Abstract

We have built a low background detector, a time projection chamber surrounded by an active anti-Compton, to measure the ν e e − elastic cross section down to the antineutrino energy of 900 keV. With our detector, running at 18 m from the core of a nuclear reactor in Bugey, we could detect reactor antineutrinos by measuring both the energy and the direction of the recoiling electrons. We report here on a first analysis of the data using an automatic scanning procedure. The results we obtain are 1.5σ higher than the ones predicted by the standard model.

Abstract

The Gotthard Xe experiment has taken an additional 6013 hours of data with an upgraded readout system. Lower limits for the half-life of the double beta decay in 136 Xe are T 1/2 0 ν >4.4×10 23 yr (including 6830 hours taken in an earlier phase), T 1/2 0 νχ 0 >0.72×10 22 yr and T 1/2 2 ν >3.6×10 20 yr at 90% confidence level. Alpha spectroscopy, as well as βα and αα coincidence techniques lead to a determination of the activity of the gas of 10 −12 g/g effective of 232 Th and 238 U. Evaluations of background strongly suggest that an appreciable fraction of the ββ -candidates comes from the allowed 2 ν decay.

Abstract

We set up a prototype for a new cryogenic particle detector. Due to its predicted amplification mechanism, such a bolometer may allow the construction of large volume detectors with the high-energy resolution of small cryogenic devices. These could be used in double beta decay or dark matter search experiments. The development of the different parts of this detector will be described, specially the production of the necessary high-quality superconducting microwave cavities.

Abstract

In this paper we present the results from the measurements made with the MUNU TPC at 1bar pressure of CF4 in the energy region below 1 MeV. Electron events down to 80 keV are successfully measured. The electron energy and direction are reconstructed for every contained single electron above 200 keV. Abstract

We have measured the cross section for inverse muon decay in the CERN neutrino wide band beam. From 4808 events observed in the CHARM II detector we derived for the Born term of the asymptotic cross section slope the result (18.16±1.36) × 10 −42 cm 2 GeV −1 . This cross section is in good agreement with the standard model prediction and allows to constrain the scalar coupling of the electron and muon to their neutrinos to | g LL S | 2

Abstract

We report on the first observation of neutrino induced production of muon pairs in the electromagnetic field of a nucleus. The data has been obtained using the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wideband neutrino and antineutrino beams. A clear signal of 55 ± 16 events is seen in a sample of dimuons of opposite charge without visible recoil at the vertex. The cross section is determined and found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Abstract

The MUNU detector was designed to study neutrino-electron elastic scattering at low energy. The central component is a Time Projection Chamber filled with CF4 gas, surrounded by an anti-Compton detector. The experiment was carried out at the Bugey (France) nuclear reactor. In this paper we present the final analysis of the data recorded at 3 bar and 1 bar pressure. Both the energy and the scattering angle of the recoil electron are measured. From the 3 bar data a new upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment was derived. Abstract

The neutrino detector CHARM-II at CERN, consisting of a large target calorimeter equipped with streamer tubes and a muon spectrometer, has been exposed to a test beam of electrons, pions and muons with momenta between 2 and 60 GeV/c in order to study the digital response of the streamer tubes, the analog response of the pickup strips and the momentum resolution of the muon spectrometer. Methods have been developed to carry the calibration results in space from the impact point of the test beam to the bulk of the detector and in time from the test beam period to all the data taking periods between 1987 and 1991, The number of hits along muon tracks was used to parametrize the dependence on fluctuations of temperature, tube voltage and gas composition. Curves and formulae are presented showing the energy response and the energy resolution for the different beam particles. The test beam data have been used to optimize and calibrate algorithms for the kinematical reconstruction of electron showers and for their extraction from the vast background of hadronic showers.

Abstract

We are building a low background detector based on a gas time projection chamber surrounded by an active anti-Compton shielding. The detector will be installed near a nuclear reactor in Bugey for the experimental study of νee− scattering. We give here a general description of the experiment, and an estimate of the expected counting rate and background. The construction of the time projection chamber is described in details. Results of first test measurements concerning the attenuation length and the spatial as well as energy resolution in the CF4 fill gas are reported.

Abstract

We are reporting an improved determination of the electroweak mixing angle sin2Θw from the ratio of νμe to ν μ e scattering cross sections. The CHARM II detector was exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide band beams at the 450 GeV CERN SPS. Including new data collected in 1989 we have obtained 1316 ± 56 νμe and 1453 ± 62 ν μ e events. From the ratio of the visible cross sections we determined sin2Θ0=0.239 ± 0.009(stat) ± 0.007(syst) without radiative corrections and g V e g A e =0.047 ± 0.046 . Combining this last result with recent results on gAe at LEP we obtain gVe= −0.023 ± 0.023.

Abstract

The CHARM II Collaboration is building a massive, fine-grained and low-density detector for the study of neutrino-electron scattering. Its target calorimeter consists of 441 detector planes with 155 232 plastic streamer tubes with digital readout of the wires and analog readout of external pickup strips. At the time of this report, about 25% of the calorimeter planes were equipped with electronics. Results on the performance of these tubes are presented as obtained with cosmic-rays and with electron and pion beams. We have also investigated the use of water vapour as an additive to the gas to suppress coating of the anode wires. The use of water would be of particular importance when using the tubes in a high-rate environment.

Abstract

A fast and effective algorithm for electromagnetic and hadronic shower separation has been developed for the digital sampling calorimeter of the CHARM II experiment. It is based on a generalization of the minimal spanning tree concept and can be easily applied to other existing calorimeters. In this particular application, which requires the highest efficiency for retaining electromagnetic showers, one gets, for 99% efficiency, a rejection factor of the order of 100 for hadronic showers.

Abstract

We report on experimental results obtained with the neutrino target calorimeter of the CHARM II detector. The experiment is being performed at CERN and its aim is to measure sin2θw, the electroweak mixing parameter, via the study of neutrino-electron scattering. The detector, installed on the SPS neutrino wide-band beam line, consists of a glass calorimeter instrumented with plastic streamer tubes and scintillation counters, and of a muon spectrometer. The performance of the calorimeter has been explored during a test run with electron and pion beams. Results concerning the detector response, the energy and angular resolution, and the e π separation are presented here.

Abstract

We are reporting on a new determination of sin2ϑw from the ratio of v μ e to v e scattering cross sections. A new detector designed for this purpose was exposed tothe Wide Band Neutrino Beamof the 450 GeV (CERN SPS. An analysis of data taken in 1987 and 1988 is presented based on 762 vμe and 1017 v e events. From the ratio of σ( v μ e ) to σ( v μ e ) we determined sin2ϑw=0.233±0.012 (stat) ± 0.008 (syst) without radiative correction. With radiative correction for mt=mH=100 GeV we find sin2ϑw=0.232±0.012(stat)±0.008(syst).

Abstract

Abstract: The MUNU detector was designed to study elastic scattering at low energy. The central component is a Time Projection Chamber filled with CF4 gas, surrounded by an anti-Compton detector. The experiment was carried out at the Bugey (France) nuclear reactor. In this Letter we present the final analysis of the data recorded at 3 bar and 1 bar pressure. Both the energy and the scattering angle of the recoil electron are measured. From the 3 bar data a new upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment at 90% CL was derived. At 1 bar electron tracks down to 150 keV were reconstructed, demonstrating the potentiality of the experimental technique for future applications in low energy neutrino physics.
