Abstract: We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of $0.60 \times 10^{-2}$ is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: A new search for decays of heavy isosinglet neutrinos produced by neutral-current neutrino interactions in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam has been conducted by the CHARM-II Collaboration. We searched for heavy neutrinos created by scattering muon neutrinos on nucleons and decaying into μ + μ − ν μ . Production and decay of heavy neutrinos would appear as double events in the detector. Each double event candidate was tested wheather the measured quantities are compatible with the kinematics of this process. No event passed this test. The analysis is based on 2 × 10 7 neutral-current neutrino events collected from 1987–1991. The experiment is sensitive to heavy neutrinos in the mass range 0.3–2.4 GeV/ c 2 . The best limit for the mixing parameter is | U μi | 2 −5 for a mass around 2 GeV/ c 2 . The analysis improve order of magnitude previous results derived from wide-band neutrino beam exposures of the CHARM detector.

Abstract: During the years 1994–1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D 0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D * + → D 0 π + a production cross-section measurement of the D * + in neutrino–nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p T with respect to the D 0 direction. A signal of 22.1 ± 5.5 D * + events was obtained. The D * + production cross-section relative to the D 0 production cross-section, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( D 0 ) , was estimated to be 0.38 ± 0.09 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) . From this result, the fraction of D 0 's produced via the decay of a D * was deduced to be 0.63 ± 0.17 . The D * + production cross-section relative to the ν μ charged-current interaction, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( CC ) , was estimated to be [ 1.02 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) ] % .

Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino-nucleon and anti-neutrino-nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01

Abstract: A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Through an analysis of the topology at the production and decay vertices the relative cross-sections were measured separately for singly (Λc +, ∑c+, ∑c +*) and doubly (∑c++, ∑ c++*) charged baryons. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the Wide Band Neutrino Beam from the CERN-SPS. About 170 000 neutrino interactions were successfully located in the emulsion. Improvements in the automatic emulsion scanning systems and application of different criteria allowed the sample of located events to be used for studies of charm production. We present a measurement of the production rate of D 0 mesons based on a sample of 25 693 located v μ charged-current (CC) interactions analysed so far. After reconstruction of the event topology in the vertex region, 283 D 0 decays were observed with an estimated background of 9.2 K 0 and Λ decays. The ratio of cross-section of D 0 production and v μ CC interactions is found to be (1.99 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.17(syst.)) × 10 -2 at 27 GeV average v μ energy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Abstract: The SciBooNE Collaboration reports K+ production cross section and rate measurements using high energy daughter muon neutrino scattering data off the SciBar polystyrene (C8H8) target in the SciBooNE detector. The K+ mesons are produced by 8 GeV protons striking a beryllium target in Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam line (BNB). Using observed neutrino and antineutrino events in SciBooNE, we measure d2σ/dpdΩ = (5.34 ±0.76) mb/(GeV/c x sr) for p + Be =K+ + X at mean K+ energy of 3.9 GeV and angle (with respect to the proton beam direction) of 3.7 degrees, corresponding to the selected K+ sample. Compared to Monte Carlo predictions using previous higher energy K+ production measurements, this measurement, which uses the NUANCE neutrino interaction generator, is consistent with a normalization factor of 0.85 ± 0.12. This agreement is evidence that the extrapolation of the higher energy K+ measurements to an 8 GeV beam energy using Feynman scaling is valid. This measurement reduces the error on the K+ production cross section from 40% to 14%.

Abstract: The SciBooNE Collaboration reports inclusive neutral current neutral pion production by a muon neutrino beam on a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtain (7.7 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.5(sys)) X 10(-2) as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein-Sehgal model implemented in our neutrino interaction simulation program with nuclear effects. The spectrum shape of the pi(0) momentum and angle agree with the model. We also measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pion production to total charged current cross section to be (0.7 +/- 0.4) X 10(-2)., We acknowledge the Physics Department at Chonnam National University, Dongshin University, and Seoul National University for the loan of parts used in SciBar and the help in the assembly of SciBar. Abstract: The SciBooNE Collaboration has performed a search for charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, \nu_\mu ^{12}C \to \mu^- ^{12}C \pi^+, with two distinct data samples. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67\times 10^{-2} at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36\times 10^{-2} at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, Minor revisions to match version accepted for publication in Physical Review D

Abstract: 23 páginas, 26 figuras, 5 tablas.-- PACS nrs.: 95.55.Vj; 28.85.+c; 07.75.+h; 07.05.Kf; 14.40.Aq.-- et al., The particle identification (PID) methods used for the calculation of secondary pion yields with the HARP forward spectrometer are presented. Information from time of flight and Cherenkov detectors is combined using likelihood techniques. The efficiencies and purities associated with the different PID selection criteria are obtained from the data. For the proton-aluminium interactions at 12.9 GeV/c incident momentum, the PID efficiencies for positive pions are 86% in the momentum range below 2 GeV/c, 92% between 2 and 3 GeV/c and 98% in the momentum range above 3 GeV/c. The purity of the selection is better than 92% for all momenta. Special emphasis has been put on understanding the main error sources. Abstract: HARP is a high-statistics, large solid angle experiment to measure hadron production using proton and pion beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c impinging on many different solid and liquid targets from low to high Z. The experiment, located in the T9 beam of the CERN PS, took data in 2001 and 2002. For the measurement of momenta of produced particles and for the identification of particle types, the experiment includes a large-angle spectrometer, based on a Time Projection Chamber and a system of Resistive Plate Chambers, and a forward spectrometer equipped with a set of large drift chambers, a threshold Cherenkov detector, a time-of-flight wall and an electromagnetic calorimeter. The large angle system uses a solenoidal magnet, while the forward spectrometer is based on a dipole magnet. Redundancy in particle identification has been sought, to enable the cross-calibration of efficiencies and to obtain a few percent overall accuracy in the cross-section measurements. Detector construction, operation and initial physics performances are reported. In addition, the full chain for data recording and analysis, from trigger to the software framework, is described. Abstract: We built and tested on charged particle beams the high energy-resolution calorimeter for the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino Beam. This calorimeter is longitudinally divided into three sectors: one electromagnetic and two hadronic. The first two upstream sectors are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in the volume ratio of 4 1 , and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is made of a sandwich of lead plates and scintillator strips and complements the measurement of the hadronic energy flow. In this paper, we briefly describe the calorimeter design and we show results on its response to electrons and pions, obtained from tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS. An energy resolution of σ(E)/E=(32.3±2.4)%/ E(GeV) + (1.4±0.7)% was achieved for pions, and σ(E)/E=(13.8±0.9)%/ E(GeV) + (−0.2±0.4)% for electrons.

Abstract: A high resolution calorimeter has been built for CHORUS, an experiment which searches for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN neutrino beam. Aim of the calorimeter is to measure the energy and direction of hadronic showers produced in interactions of the neutrinos in a nuclear emulsion target and to track through-going muons. It is a longitudinally segmented sampling device made of lead and scintillating fibers or strips. This detector has been exposed to beams of pions and electrons of defined momentum for calibration. The method used for energy calibration and results on the calorimeter performance are reported.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of coherent single charged pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The analysis is based on data taken with the CHARM II detector in beams of muon-neutrinos and -antineutrinos. The event numbers amount to N(μ−π) = 748 and N(μ+π) = 631. Cross sections and their dependence on the neutrino energy are determined. The results are in agreement with the predictions of models based on the PCAC hypothesis.

Abstract: The neutrino detector CHARM-II at CERN, consisting of a large target calorimeter equipped with streamer tubes and a muon spectrometer, has been exposed to a test beam of electrons, pions and muons with momenta between 2 and 60 GeV/c in order to study the digital response of the streamer tubes, the analog response of the pickup strips and the momentum resolution of the muon spectrometer. Methods have been developed to carry the calibration results in space from the impact point of the test beam to the bulk of the detector and in time from the test beam period to all the data taking periods between 1987 and 1991, The number of hits along muon tracks was used to parametrize the dependence on fluctuations of temperature, tube voltage and gas composition. Curves and formulae are presented showing the energy response and the energy resolution for the different beam particles. The test beam data have been used to optimize and calibrate algorithms for the kinematical reconstruction of electron showers and for their extraction from the vast background of hadronic showers.

Abstract: We report on a study of the differential cross section dσ/dy for the processes of elastic νμ- and ν μ - electron scattering. The data on which this analysis is based were recorded between 1987 and 1990 with the CHARM II detector in the wide band neutrino beam at the CERN-SPS. For the first time the shapes of these y-distributions have been determined in a model-independent way. A fit to the data yields for the squares of the neutral coupling constants the ratio gR2/gL2=0.60 ± 0.19 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.).

Abstract: The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasielastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12 000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasielastic interactions ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial-vector mass ${M}_{A}$, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for ${M}_{A}=1.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.

Abstract: New measurements of the total crosssections of charged-current interactions of muonneutrinos and antineutrinos on isoscalar nuclei have been performed. Data were recorded in an exposure of the CHARM detector in an 160 GeV narrow-band beam. The antineutrino flux was determined from the measurements of the pion and kaon flux, and independently from the muon flux measured in the shield; the two methods are found to agree. The neutrino flux was determined from the muon flux ratio forv μ and $$\bar v_\mu $$ runs which was normalized to the antineutrino flux. The cross-section slopes thus determined are $$\begin{gathered} \sigma _T^{\bar v} /E = (0.335 \pm 0.004(stat) \hfill \\ \pm 0.010(syst)).10^{ - 38} cm^2 /(GeV \cdot nucleon) \hfill \\ \sigma _T^v /E = (0.686 \pm 0.002(stat) \hfill \\ \pm 0.020(syst)).10^{ - 38} cm^2 /(GeV \cdot nucleon) \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The momentum sum of the quarks in the nucleon and the ratio of sea quark to total quark momentum are derived from the measurements.

Abstract: A moments analysis of the Λp system produced forwards (t< 1 GeV2) by 8.25 GeV/c K− mesons in the reaction K−p → Λpp has been performed. Significant structure is observed in the double moments H(LMlm) describing the decay of the Λp system and the subsequent Λ decay for L ⩽ 4. This structure can be interpreted in terms of the production of a resonance of spin-parity JP = 2−, with a mass and width of 2235±50 MeV and ∼ 200 MeV, respectively. The production cross section for the Λp decay mode is ∼ 1.5 μb.

Abstract: We present results for the hypercharge exchange reaction K−p→f' λ from a high statistics experiment at 8.25 GeV/c using the CERN 2m HBC. The total and differential cross sections have been measured; the polarisation of the Λ hyperon and the f' density matrix elements have been calculated as functions of momentum transfer. We also present detailed information on the relative strength of the natural and unnatural parity exchange contributions to the production mechanism.

Abstract: A determination of sin2 θ w based on measurements of elastic scattering of muon-neutrinos and muon-anti-neutrinos on atomic electrons is described. These purely leptonic processes were studied using the CHARM calorimeter exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide-band beams at the CERN super proton synchrotron. A total of 83±16 neutrino-electron and 112±21 antineutrino-electron events have been detected. From the measurement of the ratio of muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino cross-sections a value of sin2 θ w =0.211±0.037 was obtained.

Abstract: The cross-section ratio of neutral-current and charged-current semileptonic interactions of muon-neutrinos on isoscalar nuclei has been measured with the result:Rv=0.3093±0.0031 for hadronic energy larger than 4 GeV. From this ratio we determined the electroweak mixing angle sin2θW, wheremc is the charm-quark mass in GeV/c2. Comparison with direct measurements ofmw andmz determines the radiative shift of the intermediate boson mass Δr=0.077±0.025(exp.)±0.038(syst.), in agreement with the prediction. Assuming the validity of the electroweak standard theory we determined ϱ=0.990−0.013(mc−1.5)±0.009(exp.)±0.003(theor.).

Abstract: We present a parametrization of the parton densities as derived from the data collected by the CHARM Collaboration in the wide band beam neutrino and antineutrino weak charged-current interactions. They are rescaled to the proton and calculated at a reference Q2 value of 10 GeV2 including the next-to-leading order corrections and imposing the Gross-Llewellyn Smith and the momentum sum rules.

Abstract: From the nucleon structure functions measured by the CHARM Collaboration in inclusive neutrino and antineutrino CC interactions we determined the QCD parameters ΛMS = 310 ± 140 (stat.) ± 70(syst.) MeV using the Furmanski- Petronzio method. With the same method we extrapolated the behaviour of the quark (q + q) and the gluon x-distributions up to Q2 = 10 000 GeV2 using perturbative QCD. The extrapolated structure functions are compared with recent results coming from the two-jet differential cross section in proton-antiproton interactions at √s = 540 GeV and Q2 = 2000 GeV2.

Abstract: We report on experimental results obtained with the neutrino target calorimeter of the CHARM II detector. The experiment is being performed at CERN and its aim is to measure sin2θw, the electroweak mixing parameter, via the study of neutrino-electron scattering. The detector, installed on the SPS neutrino wide-band beam line, consists of a glass calorimeter instrumented with plastic streamer tubes and scintillation counters, and of a muon spectrometer. The performance of the calorimeter has been explored during a test run with electron and pion beams. Results concerning the detector response, the energy and angular resolution, and the e π separation are presented here.

Abstract: A search for decays of heavy neutrinos was conducted by the CHARM Collaboration in a prompt neutrino beam produced by dumping 400 GeV protons in a Cu target, and in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam produced by 400 GeV primary protons. No candidate event was found. In the beam-dump experiment heavy neutrinos have been assumed to be produced by mixing in charmed D meson decays. Neutrinos decaying into e+e−ve, μ+e−vμ, and μ+μ−vμ were searched for. Limits of |Uei|2, |Uμi|2 < 10−7 were obtained for neutrino masses around 1.5 GeV. In the wide-band experiment heavy neutrinos were assumed to be produced by neutral-current neutrino interactions in the CHARM calorimeter. Here a search was made for neutrinos decaying into a μ and hadrons. This experiment is sensitive to decays of neutrinos with mass in the range 0.5–2.8 GeV with limits of |Uμi|2 < 3 × 10−4 for masses around 2.5 GeV. These measurements extend our previous results in the mass range 10–400 MeV.

Abstract: Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. Abstract: We report on the design and performance of the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter of the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino beam. Two of the three sectors in which the calorimeter is divided are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers, and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is built using the sandwich technique with lead plates and scintillator strips and acts as a tail catcher for the hadronic energy flow. From tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS an energy resolution of σ ( E ) / E = ( 32.3 ± 2.4 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ) % was measured for pions, and σ ( E ) / E = ( 13.8 ± 0.9 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( − 0.2 ± 0.4 ) % for electrons.

Abstract: Inclusive neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions were studied in the CHARM detector exposed to neutrino and antineutrino Wide Band Beams of the CERN 400 GeV SPS. The x and Q2 dependence of the structure functions F2 and xF3 and of the antiquark momentum distribution q were determined. The data have been interpreted in terms of QCD theory using the Furmanski-Petronzio method. In this way we have determined ΛLO = [190−40+70 (stat) ± 70 (syst.)] MeV and the structure functions of quarks and gluons without specific assumptions on their analytic dependence. The results agree with previous experiments which relied on model assumptions in the analysis. We conclude that the model independent simultaneous analysis of the xF3, F2, q structure functions gives a more reliable determination of the gluon distribution in the nucleon.

Abstract: The x dependence of the longitudinal structure function F L was determined with the CHARM neutrino detector exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide-band beams of the CERN 400 GeV SPS. The results show a clear deviation from the Callan-Gross relation. The amount and the x dependence of this deviation are in agreement with the contribution coming from a finite transverse momentum of the partons in the nucleon if both the intrinsc and perturbative QCD terms are taken into account.

41. Measurement of charm production in antineutrino charged-current interactions

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: The results of a leading-order QCD analysis of neutrino-induced charm production are presented. They are based on a sample of 4111 $\nu_\mu$ - and 871 $\bar \nu_\mu$ -induced opposite-sign dimuon events with $E_{\mu 1},E_{\mu 2} > 6{\rm GeV}$ , $35 < E_{\nu} < 290{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2> 5.5\,{\rm GeV^2}$ , observed in the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The analysis yields the value of the charm quark mass $m_c=1.79\pm0.38\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$ and the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|=0.219\pm0.016$ . The strange quark content of the nucleon is found to be suppressed with respect to non-strange sea quarks by a factor $\kappa =0.39\pm0.09$ .

Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Calorimeters have been used extensively for the study of neutrino interactions in the last decade. This paper describes the need for calibration of such calorimeters and how this was realized for the case of the CHARM fine-grained calorimeter. The energy and spatial response of the calorimeter to both hadronic and electromagnetic showers was measured in π and electron beams from 5 to 140 GeV. The results and resolutions are presented.

Abstract: A search for fractionally chargedQ=1/3 (2/3) particles of different properties of interaction produced in (anti)neutrino-nucleus and in protonnucleus collisions was performed using the scintillator system of the CHARM neutrino detector at the CERN SPS. No events of the cases considered were found. In (anti)neutrino beams production was found to be less than a few times 10−5 per interaction of a beam particle. In a proton beam an upper limit on the production cross section of ∼10−40 cm2 was obtained.
