Abstract

The mini proceedings of the "Fourth International Workshop on the Extension Project for the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility (HEF-ex 2024) [https://kds.kek.jp/event/46965]" held at J-PARC, February 19-21, 2024, are presented. The workshop was devoted to discussing the physics case that connects both the present and the future Hadron Experimental Facility at J-PARC, covering a wide range of topics in flavor, hadron, and nuclear physics related to both experimental and theoretical activities being conducted at the facility.

2. Shape transition and coexistence in Te isotopes studied with the quadrupole collective Hamiltonian based on a relativistic energy density functional

Abstract

Evolution and coexistence of shape and the related collective states of even-even Te isotopes are investigated within the quadrupole collective model that is based on the nuclear density functional theory. By means of the constrained self-consistent mean-field calculations performed within the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov method with a choice of an energy density functional and a pairing force, parameters of the triaxial quadrupole collective Hamiltonian are completely determines. The collective model produces for the near mid-shell nuclei, e.g., $^{116}$Te and $^{118}$Te, low-energy and low-spin excited states, including the $0^+_2$ state, that can be interpreted as the intruder states associated with the strongly deformed prolate minimum in the potential energy surface, along with the $0^+_1$ ground state that is attributed to the normal state based on a weakly oblate deformed global minimum. The collective model calculation suggests the lowering of the $0^+_2$ energy level toward neutron mid-shell, as observed experimentally. The sensitivity of the mean-field and spectroscopic results to the choice of the pairing strength is also analyzed, and it is shown that by increasing the pairing strength description of the low-lying states of the near mid-shell nuclei is improved., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Abstract

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nnLambda state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022), B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data was also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Lambda/Sigma^0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q^2~0.5 (GeV/c)^2, W=2.14 GeV, and theta_{gamma K}^{c.m.}~8 deg. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data is scarce and a low-Q^2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q^2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Lambda/Sigma^0 hyperon electroproduction. This paper reports on the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p -> e' + K^+ + Lambda/Sigma^0 reaction in the 0.2-0.8 (GeV/c)^2, and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We performed a novel $\Sigma^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $\Sigma^+$ particles in the $\Sigma^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|\delta_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $\delta_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Abstract

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The differential cross sections of the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction were measured accurately for the {\Sigma}- momentum (p_{{\Sigma}}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of {\Delta}cos{\theta} = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions.The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cos{\theta} < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470

Abstract

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as $nn\Lambda$. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound $nn\Lambda$ state. The $nn\Lambda$ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the $nn\Lambda$-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the $^3{\rm{H}}(\gamma^{*},K^+)\textrm{X}$ reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|\delta p/p| < 4\%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the $nn\Lambda$ state were obtained to be $21$ and $31~\rm{nb/sr}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of $(-B_{\Lambda}, \Gamma) = (0.25,0.8)$ and $(0.55, 4.7)$ MeV, respectively, were assumed. Abstract

We perform coincidence measurements between $\alpha$ particles and $\gamma$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to be $5.0(11)\times10^{3}$ s, which is one of the key parameters for the frequency standard based on $^{229}$Th., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures. 3 tables

Abstract

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $\eta d$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $\eta d$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $\pi^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $\eta d$ system. Using a Flatt\'e parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $\eta d$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_\eta c$, where $p_\eta$ denotes the $\eta$ momentum in the rest frame of the $\eta d$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $\eta NN$ bound state from $\eta NN$ and $\pi NN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $\eta d$ virtual state owing to strong $\eta d$ attraction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A high statistics $\Sigma p$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $\Sigma^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{+}\Sigma^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $\pi^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $\Sigma^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $\Sigma^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Abstract

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $\Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $\Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_\Lambda$Be + $^5_\Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $\Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${\Xi}N$-$\Lambda\Lambda$ coupling.

Abstract

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0\nu\beta\beta$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0\nu\beta\beta$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$'s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($\sigma_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $\sigma_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $\sigma_{\rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces $\sigma_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times., Comment: This manuscript is prepared for submission to IEEE Transaction on Nuclear Science. Abstract

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$\pi$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $\gamma$-rays caused by the (n, $\gamma$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

CAlcium fluoride for the study of Neutrinos and Dark matters by Low-energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) searches for neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator array. A high Q-value of $^{48}$Ca at 4,272 keV enabled us to achieve very low background condition, however, at the same it causes difficulties in calibrating the detector's Q-value region because of the absence of a standard high-energy $\gamma$-ray source. Therefore, we have developed a novel calibration system based on $\gamma$-ray emission by neutron capture on $^{28}$Si, $^{56}$Fe and $^{58}$Ni nuclei. Abstract

Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. Abstract

A double-$\Lambda$ hypernucleus, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}\mathrm{Be}$, was observed by the J-PARC E07 collaboration in nuclear emulsions tagged by the $(K^{-},K^{+})$ reaction. This event was interpreted as a production and decay of $ {}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;10}\mathrm{Be}$, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$, or ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;12}\mathrm{Be}^{*}$ via $\Xi^{-}$ capture in ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}$. By assuming the capture in the atomic 3D state, the binding energy of two $\Lambda$ hyperons$\,$($B_{\Lambda\Lambda}$) of these double-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei are obtained to be $15.05 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, $19.07 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, and $13.68 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Based on the kinematic fitting, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$ is the most likely explanation for the observed event., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This paper reports on the demonstration of a high-rate energy measurement technique using a thin depletion layer silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD). A dedicated amplitude-to-time converter is developed to realize simultaneous energy and timing measurement in a high rate condition. The energy response of the system is systematically studied by using monochromatic X-ray beam with an incident energy ranging from 6 to 33 keV. The obtained energy spectra contain clear peaks and tail distributions. The peak fraction monotonously decreases as the incident photon energy increases. This phenomenon can be explained by considering the distribution of the energy deposit in silicon, which is investigated by using a Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

The FOPI Collaboration at the GSI SIS-18 synchrotron measured charged kaons from central and semi-central collisions of Ni+Ni at a beam energy of 1.91A GeV. We present the distribution of the K$^-$\K$^+$ ratio on the energy vs polar angle plane in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame, with and without subtraction of the contribution of $\phi$(1020) meson decays to the K$^-$ yield. The acceptance of the current experiment is substantially wider compared to the previous measurement of the same colliding system. The ratio of K$^-$ to K$^+$ energy spectra is expected to be sensitive to the in-medium modifications of basic kaon properties like mass. Recent results obtained by the HADES Collaboration at 1.23A and 1.76A GeV indicate that after inclusion of the $\phi$ meson decay contribution to the K$^-$ production no difference between the slopes of the K$^-$ and K$^+$ energy spectra is observed within uncertainties. For our data a linear fit to this ratio obtained after subtraction of the $\phi$ meson contribution still shows a decrease with kinetic energy, although a constant value cannot be rejected. The contribution of $\Lambda(1520) \rightarrow p\text{K}^-$ decays estimated from fitting the thermal model to the experimental yields appears to be another factor of moderate relevance., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables (1 appendix table)

Abstract

We observed a distinct peak in the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, \Lambda p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow \Lambda N $. Abstract

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\pi^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $\gamma{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $\pi^0\pi^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $\pi^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $\pi^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $\pi{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $\pi^{\pm}d${$\to$}$\pi^{\pm}d$ and $\pi^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_{\gamma} = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma {^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow \phi {^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We observed the atomic $1s$ and $2p$ states of $\pi^-$ bound to ${}^{121}{\rm Sn}$ nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ${}^{122}{\rm Sn}(d,{}^3{\rm He})$ nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve potential of discovery, which includes capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The $2p$ state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0 and $2^\circ$ are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic $1s$ state.

Abstract

Excitation-energy spectra of $^{11}$C nuclei near the $\eta^\prime$-meson production threshold have been measured by missing-mass spectroscopy using the $^{12}$C($p$,$d$) reaction. A carbon target has been irradiated with a 2.5 GeV proton beam supplied by the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI to produce $\eta^\prime$ meson bound states in $^{11}$C nuclei. Deuterons emitted at $0^\circ$ in the reaction have been momentum-analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS) used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of $\eta^\prime$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical sensitivity is achieved in the experimental spectra. Upper limits on the formation cross sections of $\eta^\prime$-mesic states are determined, and thereby a constraint imposed on the $\eta^\prime$-nucleus interaction is discussed., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

Nuclear resonant excitation of the 29.19-keV level in $^{229}$Th with high-brilliance synchrotron- radiation and detection of its decay signal, are proposed with the aim of populating the extremely low-energy isomeric state of $^{229}$Th.The proposed experiment, known as nuclear resonant scattering (NRS), has the merit of being free from uncertainties about the isomer level energy. However, it requires higher time resolution and shorter tail in the response function of the detector than that of conventional NRS experiments because of the short lifetime of the 29.19-keV state. We have fabricated an X-ray detector system which has a time resolution of 56 ps and a shorter tail function than the previously reported one. We have demonstrated an NRS experiment with the 26.27-keV nuclear level of $^{201}$Hg for feasibility assessment of the $^{229}$Th experiment. The NRS signal is clearly distinct from the prompt electronic scattering signal by the implemented detector system. The half-life of the 26.27-keV state of $^{201}$Hg is determined as 629 $\pm$ 18 ps which is better precision by a factor three than that reported to date., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We present the first determination of the energy-dependent production amplitudes of N$^{*}$ resonances with masses between 1650 MeV/c$^{2}$ and 1900 MeV/c$^{2}$ for an excess energy between $0$ and $600$ MeV. Abstract

Excitation spectra of $^{11}$C were measured in the $^{12}$C$(p,d)$ reaction near the $\eta'$ emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of 2.5 GeV impinged on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0 degrees were precisely measured with the fragment separator FRS operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound $\eta'$ mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures were observed associated with the formation of bound states. Abstract

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $\pi^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/\psi\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0\pi^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

The X(2265) resonance was previously observed in DISTO data of p+p rightarrow p+Lambda+K+ at 2.85 GeV on an attempt of searching for the kaonic nuclear state K-pp rightarrow p + Lambda. In the present paper we report an additional finding, namely, a double resonance type phenomena, not only with a peak at M(pLambda) = 2265 MeV/c2 but also a broad bump at M(K+ Lambda) ~ 1700 MeV/c2. This "double-resonance" zone is expressed as XY(2265, 1700). The latter bump may result from nearby nucleon resonances, typically N*(1710), as well as by attractive K - Lambda final-state interaction. We point out that this double resonance XY(2265, 1700) as seen in DISTO at 2.85 GeV cannot be populated kinematically in a HADES experiment at 3.5 GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, HYP2015 conference

Abstract

High-resolution pionic-atom x-ray spectroscopy was performed with an x-ray spectrometer based on a 240-pixel array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters at the piM1 beam line of the Paul Scherrer Institute. X-rays emitted by pionic carbon via the 4f->3d transition and the parallel 4d->3p transition were observed with a full-width-at-half-maximum energy resolution of 6.8 eV at 6.4 keV. Measured x-ray energies are consistent with calculated electromagnetic values which considered the strong-interaction effect assessed via the Seki-Masutani potential for the 3p energy level, and favor the electronic population of two filled 1s electrons in the K-shell. Absolute energy calibration with an uncertainty of 0.1 eV was demonstrated under a high-rate hadron beam condition of 1.45 MHz. This is the first application of a TES spectrometer to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy and is an important milestone towards next-generation high-resolution kaonic-atom x-ray spectroscopy., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PTEP

Abstract

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Abstract

We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

Abstract

We analysed the $\phi$ meson production in central Ni+Ni collisions at the beam kinetic energy of 1.93A GeV with the FOPI spectrometer and found the production probability per event of $[8.6 ~\pm~ 1.6 ~(\text{stat}) \pm 1.5 ~(\text{syst})] \times 10^{-4}$. This new data point allows for the first time to inspect the centrality dependence of the subthreshold $\phi$ meson production in heavy-ion collisions. The rise of $\phi$ meson multiplicity per event with mean number of participants can be parameterized by the power function with exponent $\alpha = 1.8 \pm 0.6$. The ratio of $\phi$ to $\text{K}^-$ production yields seems not to depend within the experimental uncertainties on the collision centrality, and the average of measured values was found to be $0.36 \pm 0.05$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $\Lambda p$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $\Lambda pn$ final state. The observed $\Lambda p n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $\Lambda p$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $\chi^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $\Gamma_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5, Comment: 12pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The production of K$^+$, K$^-$ and $\varphi$(1020) mesons is studied in Al+Al collisions at a beam energy of 1.9A GeV which is close or below the production threshold in NN reactions. Inverse slopes, anisotropy parameters, and total emission yields of K$^{\pm}$ mesons are obtained. A comparison of the ratio of kinetic energy distributions of K$^-$ and K$^+$ mesons to the HSD transport model calculations suggests that the inclusion of the in-medium modifications of kaon properties is necessary to reproduce the ratio. The inverse slope and total yield of $\phi$ mesons are deduced. The contribution to K$^-$ production from $\phi$ meson decays is found to be [17 $\pm$ 3 (stat) $^{+2}_{-7}$ (syst)] %. The results are in line with previous K$^{\pm}$ and $\phi$ data obtained for different colliding systems at similar incident beam energies., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The possible existence of \eta'-nucleus bound states has been put forward through theoretical and experimental studies. It is strongly related to the \eta' mass at finite density, which is expected to be reduced because of the interplay between the $U_A(1)$ anomaly and partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Abstract

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Abstract

$\phi$ and K$^-$ mesons from Ni+Ni collisions at the beam energy of 1.91A GeV have been measured by the FOPI spectrometer, with a trigger selecting central and semi-central events amounting to 51% of the total cross section. The phase space distributions, and the total yield of K$^-$, as well as the kinetic energy distribution and the total yield of $\phi$ mesons are presented. The $\phi$\K$^-$ ratio is found to be $0.44 \pm 0.07(\text{stat}) ^{+0.18}_{-0.12} (\text{syst})$, meaning that about 22% of K$^-$ mesons originate from the decays of $\phi$ mesons, occurring mostly in vacuum. The inverse slopes of direct kaons are up to about 15 MeV larger than the ones extracted within the one-source model, signalling that a considerable share of gap between the slopes of K$^+$ and K$^-$ could be explained by the contribution of $\phi$ mesons to negative kaons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $\nu_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_\nu \sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $\nu_{\mu}$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_\mu$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($\theta_\mu$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_{\mu}cos\theta_\mu$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

Azimuthal emission patterns of $K^\pm$ mesons have been measured in Ni + Ni collisions with the FOPI spectrometer at a beam kinetic energy of 1.91 A GeV. The transverse momentum $p_{T}$ integrated directed and elliptic flow of $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ mesons as well as the centrality dependence of $p_{T}$ - differential directed flow of $K^{+}$ mesons are compared to the predictions of HSD and IQMD transport models. The data exhibits different propagation patterns of $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ mesons in the compressed and heated nuclear medium and favor the existence of a kaon-nucleon in-medium potential, repulsive for $K^{+}$ mesons and attractive for $K^{-}$ mesons.

Abstract

A study of the $^2$H$({\gamma},{\Lambda})$X reaction was performed using a tagged photon beam at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. The photoproduced $\Lambda$ was measured in the $p{\pi^{-}}$ decay channel by the upgraded Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS2+). The momentum integrated differential cross section was determined as a function of the scatting angle of ${\Lambda}$ in the laboratory frame for five energy bins. Our results indicated a peak in the cross section at angles smaller than cos$\theta^{LAB}_{\Lambda}$ = $0.96$. The experimentally obtained angular distributions were compared to isobar models, Kaon-Maid (KM) and Saclay-Lyon A (SLA), in addition to the composite Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model. Both SLA(r$K_{1}K_{\gamma}$ = $-1.4$) and RPR describe the data quite well in contrast to the KM model, which substantially under predicted the cross section at the most forward angles. With the anticipated finalized data on ${\Lambda}$ integrated and momentum dependent differential cross sections of $^2$H$({\gamma},{\Lambda})$X~\cite{Kaneta_Beckford}, we present our findings on the angular distributions in this report.

Abstract

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cos\Theta_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $\omega$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $\eta'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV., Comment: 15pages 4figures

Abstract

The degree of freedom of spin in quantum systems serves as an unparalleled laboratory where intriguing quantum physical properties can be observed, and the ability to control spin is a powerful tool in physics research. We propose a novel method for controlling spin in a system of rare isotopes which takes advantage of the mechanism of the projectile fragmentation reaction combined with the momentum-dispersion matching technique. The present method was verified in an experiment at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory, in which a degree of alignment of 8% was achieved for the spin of a rare isotope Al-32. Abstract

An experiment was carried out with the NKS2+ in 2010 at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), in which tagged photon beams in the range of 0.8 $\le$ $E_{\gamma}$ $\le$ 1.1 GeV were impinged on a liquid $^2$H target positioned at the center of the NKS2+. The produced $\Lambda$ was subsequently detected by the $p{\pi^{-}}$ decay channel. Integrated cross sections of the $^2$H$({\gamma},{\Lambda})$X in the angular region of 0.9 $\le$ $\cos{\theta}_{\Lambda}^{LAB}$ $\le$ 1.0 was derived and compared with preceding experimental results of the NKS2 collaboration. In addition, the momentum spectra for two photon energy regions were also procured. The ${\Lambda}$ angle dependent cross sections as a function of the scattering angle in the laboratory system was additionally deduced. Abstract

The inclusive photon energy spectra measured by the Large Hadron Collider forward (LHCf) experiment in the very forward region of LHC proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 900 GeV are reported. The results from the analysis of 0.30 $\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$ of data collected in May 2010 in the two pseudorapidity regions of $\eta > 10.15$ and $8.77 < \eta < 9.46$ are compared with the predictions of the hadronic interaction models DPMJET 3.04, EPOS 1.99, PYTHIA 8.145, QGSJET I -.1em I-03 and SIBYLL 2.1, which are widely used in ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray experiments. EPOS 1.99 and SYBILL 2.1 show a reasonable agreement with the spectral shape of the experimental data, whereas they predict lower cross-sections than the data. The other models, DPMJET 3.04, QGSJET I -.1em I-03 and PYTHIA 8.145, are in good agreement with the data below 300 GeV but predict harder energy spectra than the data above 300 GeV. The results of these comparisons exhibited features similar to those for the previously reported data for $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 TeV collisions.

Abstract

The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan needs precise predictions of the initial neutrino flux. The highest precision can be reached based on detailed measurements of hadron emission from the same target as used by T2K exposed to a proton beam of the same kinetic energy of 30 GeV. The corresponding data were recorded in 2007-2010 by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS using a replica of the T2K graphite target. In this paper details of the experiment, data taking, data analysis method and results from the 2007 pilot run are presented.
