Abstract

High-spin states of $^{40}$K have been populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{12}$C($^{30}$Si,np)$^{40}$K and studied by means of $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy techniques using one AGATA triple cluster detector, at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Several new states with excitation energy up to 8 MeV and spin up to $10^-$ have been discovered. These new states are discussed in terms of J=3 and T=0 neutron-proton hole pairs. Shell-model calculations in a large model space have shown a good agreement with the experimental data for most of the energy levels. The evolution of the structure of this nucleus is here studied as a function of excitation energy and angular momentum., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. Abstract

We studied the reaction dynamics induced at Coulomb barrier energies by the weakly-bound Radioactive Ion Beam Be-7 (S-alpha = 1.586 MeV) on medium-mass (Ni-58) and heavy (Pb-208) targets. The experiments were performed at INFN-LNL (Italy), where a 2-3x10(5) pps Be-7 secondary beam was produced with the RIB in-flight facility EXOTIC. Charged reaction products were detected by means of high-granularity silicon detectors in rather wide angular ranges. The contribution presents an up-to-date status of the data analysis and theoretical interpretation for both systems.

Abstract

International audience; The level structure of the neutron-rich 69Cu, 71Cu, and 73Cu isotopes has been investigated by means ofmultinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using theAGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states inCu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrixelements for transitions from excited states in 69,71,73Cu nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particlecharacter of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, givingfurther insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g9/2 orbital.

Abstract

The study of reactions induced by exotic weakly bound nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier had attracted a large interest in the last decade, since the features of these nuclei can deeply affect the reaction dynamics. The discrimination between different reaction mechanisms is, in general, a rather difficult task. It can be achieved by using detector arrays covering high solid angle and with high granularity that allow to measure the reaction products and, possibly, coincidences between them, as, for example, recently done for stable weakly bound nuclei [1, 2]. We investigated the collision of the weakly bound nucleus Be-7 on a Ni-58 target at the beam energy of 1.1 times the Coulomb barrier, measuring the elastic scattering angular distribution and the energy and angular distributions of He-3 and He-4. The Be-7 radioactive ion beam was produced by the facility EXOTIC at INFN-LNL with an energy of 22 MeV and an intensity of similar to 3x10(5) pps. Results showed that the He-4 yeld is about 4 times larger than He-3 yield, suggesting that reaction mechanisms other than the break-up mostly produce the He isotopes. Theoretical calculations for transfer channels and compound nucleus reactions suggest that complete fusion accounts for (41 +/- 5%) of the total reaction cross section extracted from optical model analysis of the elastic scattering data, and that He-3 and He-4 stripping are the most populated reaction channels among direct processes. Eventually estimation of incomplete fusion contributions to the He-3,He-4 production cross sections was performed through semi-classical calculations with the code PLATYPUS [3].

Abstract

The energy and angular distributions of He-3 and He-4 ions produced in the Be-7 + Ni-58 reaction at a bombarding energy of 22 MeV have been measured for the first time. The yield of the heavier helium isotope was four to five times more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart, ruling out the possibility that in this energy range the Be-7 reaction dynamics is dominated by the exclusive breakup process Be-7 -> He-3 + He-4 (S-alpha = 1.586 MeV). Extensive kinematic and theoretical calculations suggest that the He-3 ions mostly originate from the He-4-stripping process and the He-4 production is mainly triggered by the fusion-evaporation channel. The role played by the breakup, He-3-stripping, 1n-stripping, and 1n-pickup processes is also discussed.

Abstract

The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188-198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states

Abstract

The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188−198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states.

Abstract

We measured for the first time Be-7 elastically scattered nuclei as well as He-3,He-4 reaction products from a Ni-58 target at 22.3 MeV beam energy. The data were analyzed within the optical model formalism to extract the total reaction cross section. Extensive kinematical, Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) and Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations were performed to investigate the He-3,He-4 originating mechanisms and the interplay between different reaction channels.

Neutron-rich nuclei with protons in the fp shell show an onset of collectivity around N=40. Spectroscopic information is required to understand the underlying mechanism and to determine the relevant terms of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that are responsible for the evolution of the shell structure in this mass region.

Abstract

Recent results on the reaction dynamics induced by light radioactive ion beams at Coulomb barrier energies are reviewed. As a general feature, the exotic structure and the weak binding energy of most of these projectiles enhance the reaction probability rather than the fusion cross section, as originally expected. The quest has now moved toward understanding which direct reaction mechanism originates the enhancement. Experimental data showed that n-halo and p-halo nuclei are characterized by a different behavior. Transfer processes enhance the reaction probability for n-halo nuclei, such as 6;8He, while for p-halo nuclei, such as 8B, the breakup channel seems to be mainly responsible for the enhancement.

Abstract

The reaction dynamics induced by the 17F Radioactive Ion Beam on the proton-shell closed 58Ni target was studied at two colliding energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier. Charged reaction products were detected at forward angles and the quasi-elastic differential cross section was analyzed within the framework of the optical model in order to extract the reaction cross section and to investigate the relevance of direct reaction channels (inelastic scattering, breakup and transfer) at near-barrier energies. The comparison with the reaction induced by double-magic tightly-bound 16O projectiles on the same target showed that the 17F reaction cross section is moderately enhanced at the lower secondary beam energy. Direct reaction channels were also found to be more relevant than for the corresponding 16O-induced reaction.

Abstract

A deep-inelastic reaction experiment with a 136Xe beam impinging on a 208Pb target was performed. Gamma rays were detected with the AGATA Demonstrator. The beam-like fragments were identified with the PRISMA spectrometer on event- by-event basis. Doppler corrected \gamma -ray spectra were obtained for both the identified beam-like nuclei and for the target-like binary partners. This cross-coincidence method can be used to study heavy target-like nuclei which cannot be unambiguously identified in the spectrometer due to their large masses and low velocities.

Abstract

The scattering processes of two mirror projectiles, the well bound 17 O (Sn = 4.143 MeV) and the loosely bound radioactive 17 F (Sp = 0.600 MeV), on the proton closed shell target 58 Ni were measured at several energies around the Coulomb barrier. The experimental data were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross section and to investigate the role played by direct reaction channels at near-barrier energies. The comparison shows a similar behaviour for the two A = 17 projectiles despite their very different binding energies and suggests a rather small effect of the 17 F breakup channel on the reaction dynamics.

Abstract

WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output.
