Abstract

Lifetimes of low-spin excited states in $^{98}$Zr were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique and the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nucleus of interest was populated in a $^{96}$Zr($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{98}$Zr two-neutron transfer reaction at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Lifetimes of six low-spin excited states, of which four are unknown, were measured. The deduced $B(E2)$ values were compared with Monte Carlo shell model and interacting boson model with configuration mixing calculations. Both approaches reproduce well most of the data but leave challenging questions regarding the structure of some low lying states., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

The lifetimes of first excited 2$^+$, 4$^+$ and 6$^+$ states in $^{98}$Zr were measured with the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in $^{98}$Zr were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u $^{238}$U beam and a $^{9}$Be target. The $\gamma$ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified in mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows very small B(E2;2$_1^+$ $\rightarrow$ 0$_1^+$) value in $^{98}$Zr thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at $N=60$. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo Shell model and beyond mean field calculations. The present results indicate coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$, the $2^+_2$ and the $3^-_1$ states of $^{210}$Po have been measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The results for the lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for consistent description of the properties of the yrast $2^+_1$, $4^+_1$, $6^+_1$, and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. The Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

International audience; Level lifetimes of the yrast (5/2 −) to 13/2 − states in the neutron-rich nucleus 53 Ti, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, have been measured for the first time. The recoil distance Doppler-shift method was employed and lifetimes of the excited states were extracted by a lineshape analysis aided by Geant4-based Monte-Carlo simulations. The experiment was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds facility in Caen, France, by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the γ-ray detection coupled to the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification and the Cologne plunger for deep-inelastic reactions. Reduced transition probabilities, deduced from the lifetimes, give new information on the nuclear structure of 53 Ti, and are used to benchmark different shell-model calculations using established interactions in the fp shell.

Abstract

AGATA Collaboration, Lifetimes of the excited states in the neutron-rich Ti52,54 nuclei, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, were measured by employing the Cologne plunger device and the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. A comparison between the transition probabilities obtained from the measured lifetimes of the 21+ to 81+ yrast states in Ti52,54 and that from the shell-model calculations based on the well-established GXPF1A, GXPF1B, and KB3G fp shell interactions support the N=32 subshell closure. The B(E2) values for Ti52 determined in this work are in disagreement with the known data, but are consistent with the predictions of the shell-model calculations and reduce the previously observed pronounced staggering across the even-even titanium isotopes.

Abstract

Lifetime measurements of excited states in 178 Hg have been performed using the 103 Rh ( 78 Kr , p 2 n ) reaction at a beam energy of 354 MeV. The recoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique was applied to select the 178 Hg nuclei and associate the prompt γ rays with the correlated characteristic ground-state α decay. Lifetimes of the four lowest yrast states of 178 Hg have been determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions with focus on shape coexistence. The results confirm the shift of the deformed prolate structures to higher lying states but also indicate their increasing deformation with decreasing neutron number. peerReviewed

Abstract

Lifetime measurements have been performed using the 98 Mo ( 86 Kr , 4 n ) 180 Pt reaction at a beam energy of 380 MeV, and the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. In a second experiment the 168 Yb ( 16 O , 4 n ) 180 Pt reaction at a beam energy of 88 MeV using the Ge-gated γ − γ fast timing technique was used to determine lifetimes. Lifetimes of the four lowest yrast states of 180 Pt have been determined. The experimental data are compared to calculations within the framework of the interacting boson model and the general collective model. Both models predict a deformed ground state and are consistent with all the remaining experimental results. peerReviewed

Abstract

International audience; Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se80,82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (61+) and (81+) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 41+ state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 61+ state and the yrare 42+ state and lifetime limits of the yrast (101+) state and of the 51− state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited 2^{+}, 4^{+}, and 6^{+} states in ^{98}Zr were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in ^{98}Zr were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u ^{238}U beam and a ^{9}Be target. The γ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified by mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows a very small B(E2;2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+}) value in ^{98}Zr, thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at N=60. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. The present results indicate the coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state.

Abstract

International audience; The lifetimes of the $ 2^+_1$ , the $ 2^+_2$ and the $ 3^-_1$ states of$^{210}$Po have been measured in the$^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the $ 2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast $ 2^+_1$ , $ 4^+_1$ , $ 6^+_1$ , and $ 8^+_1$ states of$^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

International audience; Lifetimes of the excited states in the neutron-rich Ti52,54 nuclei, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, were measured by employing the Cologne plunger device and the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The experiment was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds facility by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the γ-ray detection, coupled to the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. A comparison between the transition probabilities obtained from the measured lifetimes of the 21+ to 81+ yrast states in Ti52,54 and that from the shell-model calculations based on the well-established GXPF1A, GXPF1B, and KB3G fp shell interactions support the N=32 subshell closure. The B(E2) values for Ti52 determined in this work are in disagreement with the known data, but are consistent with the predictions of the shell-model calculations and reduce the previously observed pronounced staggering across the even-even titanium isotopes.

This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution Licence 4.0, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.; International audience; In this work we present the results from two experiments dedicated to search for quadrupole-collective isovector valence-shell excitation, the states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), in nuclei around the doubly magic nucleus $^{208}$Pb. $^{212}$Po was studied in an α-transfer reaction. $^{204}$Hg was studied in an inverse kinematics Coulomb excitation reaction on a carbon target. Both experiments provide indications for existence of one-phonon MSSs. Those are the first experimentally identified MSSs in the mass A ≈ 208 region.

5th International Workshop on Nuclear Fission and Fission Product Spectroscopy (FISSION) -- MAY 28-31, 2013 -- Caen, FRANCE, WOS: 000342384500002, Lifetimes of first 4(+) and 6(+) states have been measured in neutron-rich isotopes of Zr, Mo, Ru and Pd using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL. The nuclei were produced through a fusion-fission reaction in inverse kinematics. The fission fragments were fully identified in the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer and gamma -rays were detected in coincidence with the EXOGAM germanium array. Lifetimes of excited states in the range of 1-100 ps were measured with the Cologne plunger. Abstract

The lifetime of the first excited 2(+) state in the neutron deficient nuclide (108)Te has been measured for the first time, using a combined recoil decay tagging and recoil distance Doppler shift technique. The deduced reduced transition probability is B(E2;0(g.s.)(+) -> 2(+)) = 0.39(-0.04)(+0.05)e(2)b(2). Compared to previous experimental data on neutron deficient tellurium isotopes, the new data point constitutes a large step (six neutrons) toward the N = 50 shell closure. In contrast to what has earlier been reported for the light tin isotopes, our result for tellurium does not show any enhanced transition probability with respect to the theoretical predictions and the tellurium systematics including the new data is successfully reproduced by state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Abstract

Lifetimes of the 2 1 + states in 44Ti, 48,50Cr, and 52Fe were determined with high accuracy exploiting the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. The reduced E2 transition strengths of 44Ti and 52Fe differ considerably from previously known values. A systematic increase in collectivity is found for the N = Z nuclei compared to neighboring isotopes. The B ( E2 ) values along the Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopic chains are compared to shell-model calculations employing established interactions for the 0 f 1 p shell, as well as a novel effective shell-model Hamiltonian starting from a realistic nucleon–nucleon potential. The theoretical approaches underestimate the B ( E2 ) values for the lower-mass Ti isotopes. Strong indication is found for particle-hole cross-shell configurations, recently corroborated by similar results for the neighboring isotone 42Ca.
