Abstract: The spin structure functions g 1 for the proton and the deuteron have been measured over a wide kinematic range in x and Q 2 using 1.6 and 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident upon polarized NH3 and ND3 targets at Jefferson Lab. Scattered electrons were detected in the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, for 0.05 Q 2 5 GeV 2 and W 3 GeV . The first moments of g 1 for the proton and deuteron are presented – both have a negative slope at low Q 2 , as predicted by the extended Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn sum rule. The first extraction of the generalized forward spin polarizability of the proton γ 0 p is also reported. This quantity shows strong Q 2 dependence at low Q 2 . Our analysis of the Q 2 evolution of the first moment of g 1 shows agreement in leading order with Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. However, a significant discrepancy is observed between the γ 0 p data and Chiral Perturbation calculations for γ 0 p , even at the lowest Q 2 .

Abstract: The neutron elastic magnetic form factor was extracted from quasielastic electron scattering on deuterium over the range Q;{2}=1.0-4.8 GeV2 with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. High precision was achieved with a ratio technique and a simultaneous in situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency. Neutrons were detected with electromagnetic calorimeters and time-of-flight scintillators at two beam energies. The dipole parametrization gives a good description of the data.

Abstract: The first measurements of the polarized structure function {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} for the reaction {sup 1}H(e-vector,e{sup '}K{sup +}){lambda} in the nucleon resonance region are reported. Measurements are included from threshold up to W=2.05 GeV for central values of Q{sup 2} of 0.65 and 1.00 GeV{sup 2}, and nearly the entire kaon center-of-mass angular range. {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} is the imaginary part of the longitudinal-transverse response and is expected to be sensitive to interferences between competing intermediate s-channel resonances, as well as resonant and nonresonant processes. The results for {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} are comparable in magnitude to previously reported results from CLAS for {sigma}{sub LT}, the real part of the same response. An intriguing sign change in {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} is observed in the high Q{sup 2} data at W{approx_equal}1.9 GeV. Comparisons to several existing model predictions are shown.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction $$\gamma p \to K^{*0} \Sigma^+$$ are presented at nine bins in photon energy in the range from 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The \kstar was detected by its decay products, $$K^+\pi^-$$, in the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These data are the first \kstar photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor $K^*$-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data in general, after adjusting the model's two parameters in a fit to our data. Disagreement between the data at forward angles and the global angle-energy fit to the model suggests that the role of scalar $$\kappa$$ meson exchange in $t$-channel diagrams should be investigated.

Abstract: We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of K{sup +}{lambda} and K{sup +}{sigma}{sup 0} final states from a proton target using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) large-acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions {sigma}{sub T},{sigma}{sub L},{sigma}{sub TT}, and {sigma}{sub LT} were extracted from the {phi}- and {epsilon}-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first {sigma}{sub L}/{sigma}{sub T} separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. Abstract: New measurements of the spin structure functions of the proton and deuteron g1p(x,Q2) and g1d(x,Q2) in the nucleon resonance region are compared with extrapolations of target-mass-corrected next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD fits to higher energy data. Averaged over the entire resonance region (W 1.7 GeV2. This global duality appears to result from cancellations among the prominent local resonance regions: in particular strong sigma{3/2} contributions in the Delta(1232) region appear to be compensated by strong sigma{1/2} contributions in the resonance region centered on 1.5 GeV. These results are encouraging for the extension of NLO QCD fits to lower W and Q2 than have been used previously.

Abstract: The ep {yields} e'pi{sup +}n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV{sup 2} < Q{sup 2} < 0.65 GeV{sup 2} range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions {sigma}{sub TL}, {sigma}{sub TT} and the linear combination {sigma}{sub T} + {epsilon}{sigma}{sub L} were extracted by fitting the {phi}-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to the MAID and Sato-Lee models.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p -> eta-prime p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data indicate for the first time the coupling of the etaprime N channel to both the S_11(1535) and P_11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the eta N channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of j=3/2 resonances in the process., 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry A_UL for the exclusive electroproduction of high energy photons was measured for the first time in p(e,e'p\gamma). The data have been accumulated at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH_3 target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from the interference of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. The amplitude of the sin(phi) moment is 0.252 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.020(sys). Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions H and H-tilde., Comment: Modified text slightly, added references

Abstract: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} measures the interference between real and imaginary amplitudes in pion electroproduction and can be used to probe the coupling between resonant and nonresonant processes. We report new measurements of {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} in the N(1440)(1/2){sup +} (Roper) resonance region at Q{sup 2}=0.40 and 0.65GeV{sup 2} for both the {pi}{sup 0}p and {pi}{sup +}n channels. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at a beam energy of 1.515 GeV. Complete angular distributions were obtained and are compared to recent phenomenological models. The {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}}({pi}{sup +}n) channel shows a large sensitivity to the Roper-resonance multipoles M{sub 1-} and S{sub 1-} and provides new constraints on models of resonance formation.

Abstract: Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction gamma + p --> p pi+ pi- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 GeV and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data are compared with the results of various phenomenological model calculations, and show that these models currently do not provide an adequate description for the behavior of this new observable., 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: The electromagnetic decays of the Sig0(1385) and Lambda(1520) hyperons were studied in photon-induced reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1116)gamma in the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the Sig0(1385) and a measurement of the Lambda(1520) radiative decay width. For the Sig0(1385) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we measured a partial width of 479+/-120(stat)+81-100(sys) keV, larger than all of the existing model predictions. For the Lambda(1520) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we obtained a partial width of 167+/-43(stat)+26-12(sys) keV.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+ pentaquarks., submitted to Phys. Rev. C

Abstract: The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons. Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic ranges, have been found to be in reasonable agreement with the data.

Abstract: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} has been measured using the p(e-vector,e{sup '}{pi}{sup +})n reaction in the {delta}(1232) resonance region at Q{sup 2}=0.40 and 0.65 GeV{sup 2}. No previous {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} data exist for this reaction channel. The kinematically complete experiment was performed at the Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. A partial-wave analysis of the data shows generally better agreement with recent phenomenological models of pion electroproduction compared to the previously measured {pi}{sup 0}p channel. A fit to both {pi}{sup 0}p and {pi}{sup +}n channels using a unitary isobar model suggests the unitarized Born terms provide a consistent description of the nonresonant background. The t-channel pion pole term is important in the {pi}{sup 0}p channel through a rescattering correction, which could be model dependent.

Abstract: Single spin azimuthal asymmetries A_LT' were measured at Jefferson Lab using 2.2 and 4.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident on He4 and C12 targets in the CLAS detector. A_LT' is related to the imaginary part of the longitudinal-transverse interference and in quasifree nucleon knockout it provides an unambiguous signature for final state interactions (FSI). Experimental values of A_LT' were found to be below 5%, typically |A_LT'| < 3% for data with good statistical precision. Optical Model in Eikonal Approximation (OMEA) and Relativistic Multiple-Scattering Glauber Approximation (RMSGA) calculations are shown to be consistent with the measured asymmetries., 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We investigate the transition from the nucleon-meson to quark-gluon description of the strong interaction using the photon energy dependence of the $d(\gamma,p)n$ differential cross section for photon energies above 0.5 GeV and center-of-mass proton angles between $30^{\circ}$ and $150^{\circ}$. A possible signature for this transition is the onset of cross section $s^{-11}$ scaling with the total energy squared, $s$, at some proton transverse momentum, $P_T$. The results show that the scaling has been reached for proton transverse momentum above about 1.1 GeV/c. Abstract: We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at 2.2 GeV over a wide kinematic range. The kinetic energy distribution for ''fast'' nucleons (p > 250 MeV/c) peaks where two nucleons each have 20% or less, and the third nucleon has most of the transferred energy. These fast pp and pn pairs are back-to-back with little momentum along the three-momentum transfer, indicating that they are spectators. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that we have measured distorted two-nucleon momentum distributions by striking the third nucleon and detecting the spectator correlated pair.

Abstract: Nearly complete angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section have been measured using the CLAS detector and the tagged photon beam at JLab. The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10-160 degrees. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well-described by the non-perturbative Quark Gluon String Model., Comment: Submitted to PRC; 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: We report the first evidence for a nonzero beam-spin azimuthal asymmetry in the electroproduction of positive pions in the deep-inelastic kinematic region. Data for the reaction ep→e'pi(+)X have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 4.3 GeV with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The amplitude of the sin phi modulation increases with the momentum of the pion relative to the virtual photon, z. In the range z=0.5-0.8 the average amplitude is 0.038+/-0.005+/-0.003 for a missing mass M-X gt 1.1 GeV and 0.037+/-0.007+/-0.004 for M-X gt 1.4 GeV

Abstract: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{L{T}^{\ensuremath{'}}}$ has been measured using the $p(\stackrel{P\vec}{e},{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})n$ reaction in the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ resonance region at ${Q}^{2}=0.40$ and $0.65\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$. No previous ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{L{T}^{\ensuremath{'}}}$ data exist for this reaction channel. The kinematically complete experiment was performed at the Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of $1.515\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}$. A partial-wave analysis of the data shows generally better agreement with recent phenomenological models of pion electroproduction compared to the previously measured ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ channel. A fit to both ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}n$ channels using a unitary isobar model suggests the unitarized Born terms provide a consistent description of the nonresonant background. The $t$-channel pion pole term is important in the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ channel through a rescattering correction, which could be model dependent.

Abstract: The ratios of inclusive electron scattering cross sections of ${}^{4}\mathrm{He},$ ${}^{12}\mathrm{C},$ and ${}^{56}\mathrm{Fe}$ to ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ have been measured for the first time. It is shown that these ratios are independent of ${x}_{B}$ at ${Q}^{2}g1.4{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ for ${x}_{B}g1.5,$ where the inclusive cross section depends primarily on the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. The observed scaling shows that the momentum distributions at high-momenta have the same shape for all nuclei and differ only by a scale factor. The observed onset of the scaling at ${Q}^{2}g1.4{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ and ${x}_{B}g1.5$ is consistent with the kinematical expectation that two-nucleon short range correlations (SRC) dominate the nuclear wave function at ${p}_{m}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}300\mathrm{MeV}/c.$ The values of these ratios in the scaling region can be related to the relative probabilities of SRC in nuclei with $Ag~3.$ Our data, combined with calculations and other measurements of the ${}^{3}\mathrm{H}\mathrm{e}/\mathrm{d}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{r}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{m}$ ratio, demonstrate that for nuclei with $Ag~12$ these probabilities are 4.9--5.9 times larger than in deuterium, while for ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ it is larger by a factor of about 3.8.

Abstract: The first measurements of the transferred polarization for the exclusive (e) over right arrow p --> e'K+(U) over right arrow reaction have been performed at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS spectrometer. A 2.567 GeV beam was used to measure the hyperon polarization over Q(2) from 0.3 to 1.5 (GeV/c)(2), W from 1.6 to 2.15 GeV, and over the full K+ center-of-mass angular range. Comparison with predictions of hadrodynamic models indicates strong sensitivity to the underlying resonance contributions. A nonrelativistic quark-model interpretation of our data suggests that the s (s) over bar quark pair is produced with spins predominantly antialigned. Implications for the validity of the most widely used quark-pair creation operator are discussed.

Abstract: Cross-sections and recoil polarizations for the reactions gamma + p --> K^+ + Lambda and gamma + p --> K^+ + Sigma^0 have been measured with high statistics and with good angular coverage for center-of-mass energies between 1.6 and 2.3 GeV. In the K^+Lambda channel we confirm a structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles, but our data shows a more complex s- and u- channel resonance structure than previously seen. This structure is present at forward and backward angles but not central angles, and its position and width change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is playing a role. Rising back-angle cross sections at higher energies and large positive polarization at backward angles are consistent with sizable s- or u-channel contributions. None of the model calculations we present can consistently explain these aspects of the data., 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: The CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) is used to study photo- and electro-induced nuclear and hadronic reactions by providing efficient detection of neutral and charged particles over a good fraction of the full solid angle. A collaboration of about 30 institutions has designed, assembled, and commissioned CLAS in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The CLAS detector is based on a novel six-coil toroidal magnet which provides a largely azimuthal field distribution. Trajectory reconstruction using drift chambers results in a momentum resolution of 0.5% at forward angles. Cherenkov counters, time-of-flight scintillators, and electromagnetic calorimeters provide good particle identification. Fast triggering and high data-acquisition rates allow operation at a luminosity of 10 34 nucleon cm −2 s −1 . These capabilities are being used in a broad experimental program to study the structure and interactions of mesons, nucleons, and nuclei using polarized and unpolarized electron and photon beams and targets. This paper is a comprehensive and general description of the design, construction and performance of CLAS.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for gammap-->etap have been measured with tagged real photons for incident photon energies from 0.75 to 1.95 GeV. Mesons were identified by missing mass reconstruction using kinematical information for protons scattered in the production process. The data provide the first extensive angular distribution measurements for the process above W=1.75 GeV. Comparison with preliminary results from a constituent quark model support the suggestion that a third S11 resonance with mass approximately 1.8 GeV couples to the etaN channel.

Abstract: We report the first results of the beam spin asymmetry measured in the reaction e + p -> e + p + gamma at a beam energy of 4.25 GeV. A large asymmetry with a sin(phi) modulation is observed, as predicted for the interference term of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and the Bethe-Heitler process. The amplitude of this modulation is alpha = 0.202 +/- 0.028. In leading-order and leading-twist pQCD, the alpha is directly proportional to the imaginary part of the DVCS amplitude.

Abstract: Results of fission fragment mass-energy distributions of the compound ${}^{226}\mathrm{Th}$ nucleus formed in the sub-barrier fusion reaction ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}{+}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ at an energy of ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}$ ions ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=78$ MeV are reported. The reaction has been studied twice using two different accelerators, and both sets of experimental data agree quite well. Performed analysis of the experimental data with the use of a new multicomponent method has shown that alongside the well-known modes, i.e., the symmetric (S) and two asymmetric modes standard-one and standard-two, a high-energy mode standard-three has manifested itself. The last named mode appears due to the influence of the close-to-sphere neutron shell with $N\ensuremath{\approx}50$ in the light fission fragment group. Theoretical calculations of the prescission shapes of the fissioning nuclei ${}^{224,226}\mathrm{Th}$ confirm this conclusion.

Abstract: The γ-rays from the multimodal fission of the 226Th formed in 18O+208Pb was investigated at the near- and sub-barrier energies. The corresponding excitation energies at the saddle point, Esp*, ranged from 23 to 26 MeV. The average γ-ray multiplicities and relative γ-ray energies as a function of the mass of the fission fragments exhibits a complex structure and strong variations. Such strong variations have never been previously observed in heavy ion-induced fusion-fission reactions. Obtained results may be explained with the influence of shell effects on the properties of the fission fragments. Present work is the one in series of investigation of the multimodal fission phenomena in At-Th region.

Abstract: The fission of the systems 220,224,226Th was investigated by measuring the mass-energy distributions of the fission fragments. The corresponding excitation energies at the saddle point, Esp*, ranged from 16 to 40 MeV. As Esp* decreases, an asymmetric mass component becomes visible on the predominately symmetric mass distribution. The contribution of the asymmetric mode is characterized by the total yield ratio Ys/Ya, which decreases rapidly for the heavier isotopes of thorium. This behavior of Ys/Ya is in qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations. For all isotopes studied, the subtracted asymmetric fission component, Ya=Y1−Ys, exhibits a complex structure, actually showing two components, Ya=Ya1+Ya0, which have average masses Ma1=132 and Ma0=140.

Abstract: The longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section for the $e p\to e^\prime p \rho^0$ reaction were measured in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS detector. The data were taken with a 4.247 GeV electron beam and were analyzed in a range of $x_B$ from 0.2 to 0.6 and of $Q^2$ from 1.5 to 3.0 GeV$^2$. The data are compared to a Regge model based on effective hadronic degrees of freedom and to a calculation based on Generalized Parton Distributions. It is found that the transverse part of the cross section is well described by the former approach while the longitudinal part can be reproduced by the latter., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The reaction $\gamma p \to \pi^+K^-K^+n$ was studied at Jefferson Lab using a tagged photon beam with an energy range of 3-5.47 GeV. A narrow baryon state with strangeness S=+1 and mass $M=1555\pm 10$ MeV/c$^2$ was observed in the $nK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. The peak's width is consistent with the CLAS resolution (FWHM=26 MeV/c$^2$), and its statistical significance is 7.8 $\pm$ 1.0 ~$\sigma$. A baryon with positive strangeness has exotic structure and cannot be described in the framework of the naive constituent quark model. The mass of the observed state is consistent with the mass predicted by a chiral soliton model for the $\Theta^+$ baryon. In addition, the $pK^+$ invariant mass distribution was analyzed in the reaction $\gamma p\to K^-K^+p$ with high statistics in search of doubly-charged exotic baryon states. Abstract: In an exclusive measurement of the reaction $\gamma d \to K^+ K^- p n$, a narrow peak that can be attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness $S=+1$ is seen in the $K^+n$ invariant mass spectrum. The peak is at $1.542\pm 0.005$ GeV/c$^2$ with a measured width of 0.021 GeV/c$^2$ FWHM, which is largely determined by experimental mass resolution. The statistical significance of the peak is $5.2 \pm 0.6 \sigma$. The mass and width of the observed peak are consistent with recent reports of a narrow $S=+1$ baryon by other experimental groups., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
