In this work, we present new data on the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) cross section studied with a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan contributing torwards resolving a long standing discrepancy between existing measurements of this cross section. Results for $\gamma$-ray strength function below threshold obtained by applying the Oslo method to $^{89}$Y($p,p'\gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidences combined with the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) data this providing experimental data for the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{89}$Y for $\gamma$ energies in the range of $\approx 1.6$ Mev to $\approx$ 20 MeV. A low-energy enhancement is seen for $\gamma$-rays below $\approx 2.5$ MeV. Shell-model calculations indicate that this feature is caused by strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted from $^{89}$Y($d,p \gamma$)$^{90}$Y coincidences using the Oslo method. Using the ($\gamma,n$) and ($d,p\gamma$) data as experimental constraints, we have calculated the $^{89}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{90}$Y cross section with the TALYS reaction code. Our results have been compared with directly measured (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and evaluations. The $N=50$ isotope $^{89}$Y is an important bottleneck in the s-process and the magnitude of the $^{89}$Y(n,$\gamma)$ cross section is key to understanding how s-process stars produce heavy isotopes., Comment: 18 pages (including references) and 16 figures, to be submitted to PRC

The nuclear level density and the $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted for $^{89}$Y, using the Oslo Method on $^{89}$Y($p,p' \gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidence data. The $\gamma$-ray strength function displays a low-energy enhancement consistent with previous observations in this mass region ($^{93-98}$Mo). Shell-model calculations give support that the observed enhancement is due to strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The data were further used as input for calculations of the $^{88}$Sr($p,\gamma$)$^{89}$Y and $^{88}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{89}$Y cross sections with the TALYS reaction code. Comparison with cross-section data, where available, as well as with values from the BRUSLIB library, shows a satisfying agreement., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys. The level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions of $^{105,106,111,112}$Cd have been extracted from particle-$\gamma$ coincidence data using the Oslo method. The level densities are in very good agreement with known levels at low excitation energy. The $\gamma$-ray strength functions display no strong enhancement for low $\gamma$ energies. However, more low-energy strength is apparent for $^{105,106}$Cd than for $^{111,112}$Cd. For $\gamma$ energies above $\approx$ 4 MeV, there is evidence for some extra strength, similar to what has been previously observed for the Sn isotopes. The origin of this extra strength is unclear; it might be due to $E1$ and $M1$ transitions originating from neutron skin oscillations or the spin-flip resonance, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

The nuclear level density and the gamma-ray strength function have been determined for 43Sc in the energy range up to 2 MeV below the neutron separation energy using the Oslo method with the 46Ti(p,alpha)43Sc reaction. A comparison to 45Sc shows that the level density of 43Sc is smaller by an approximately constant factor of two. This behaviour is well reproduced in a microscopical/combinatorial model calculation. The gamma-ray strength function is showing an increase at low gamma-ray energies, a feature which has been observed in several nuclei but which still awaits theoretical explanation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A measurement of 74Ge(p,gamma)75As at low proton energies, inside the astrophysically relevant energy region, is important in several respects. The reaction is directly important as it is a bottleneck in the reaction flow which produces the lightest p nucleus 74Se. It is also an important addition to the data set required to test reaction-rate predictions and to allow an improvement in the global p+nucleus optical potential required in such calculations. An in-beam experiment was performed, making it possible to measure in the energy range between 2.1 and 3.7 MeV, which is for the most part inside the astrophysically relevant energy window. Angular distributions of the gamma-ray transitions were measured with high-purity germanium detectors at eight angles relative to the beam axis. In addition to the total cross sections, partial cross sections for the direct population of twelve levels were determined. The resulting cross sections were compared to Hauser-Feshbach calculations using the code SMARAGD. Only a constant renormalization factor of the calculated proton widths allowed a good reproduction of both total and partial cross sections. The accuracy of the calculation made it possible to check the spin assignment of some states in 75As. In the case of the 1075 keV state, a double state with spins and parities of 3/2- and 5/2- is needed to explain the experimental partial cross sections. A change in parity from 5/2+ to 5/2- is required for the state at 401 keV. Furthermore, in the case of 74Ge, studying the combination of total and partial cross sections made it possible to test the gamma width, which is essential in the calculation of the astrophysical 74$As(n,gamma)75As rate., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The pygmy dipole resonance has been studied in the proton-magic nucleus 124Sn with the (a,a'g) coincidence method at E=136 MeV. The comparison with results of photon-scattering experiments reveals a splitting into two components with different structure: one group of states which is excited in (a,a'g) as well as in (g,g') reactions and a group of states at higher energies which is only excited in (g,g') reactions. Calculations with the self-consistent relativistic quasiparticle time-blocking approximation and the quasiparticle phonon model are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results and predict a low-lying isoscalar component dominated by neutron-skin oscillations and a higher-lying more isovector component on the tail of the giant dipole resonance.

Particle-gamma coincidences from the 46Ti(p,p' gamma)46Ti inelastic scattering reaction with 15-MeV protons are utilized to obtain gamma-ray spectra as a function of excitation energy. The rich data set allows analyzing the coincidence data with various gates on excitation energy. This enables, for many independent data sets, a simultaneous extraction of level density and radiative strength function (RSF). The results are consistent with one common level density. The data seem to exhibit a universal RSF as the deduced RSFs from different excitation energies show only small fluctuations provided that only excitation energies above 3 MeV are taken into account. If transitions to well-separated low-energy levels are included, the deduced RSF may change by a factor of 2-3, which might be expected due to the involved Porter-Thomas fluctuations., Comment: 11 pages and 12 figures

The level density and gamma-ray strength function of 45Ti have been determined by use of the Oslo method. The particle-gamma coincidences from the 46Ti(p,d gamma)45Ti pick-up reaction with 32 MeV protons are utilized to obtain gamma-ray spectra as function of excitation energy. The extracted level density and strength function are compared with models, which are found to describe these quantities satisfactorily. The data do not reveal any single-particle energy gaps of the underlying doubly magic 40Ca core, probably due to the strong quadruple deformation.

The absolute cross section of the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,n)$^{16}$O reaction has been measured at E$_{\alpha}$ = 0.8 to 8.0 MeV with an overall accuracy of 4%. As a continuation of a systematic study of reactions relevant to the astrophysical p process, the cross sections of the 74,76Se(p,gamma)75,77Br and 82Se(p,n)82Br reactions have been measured at energies from 1.3 to 3.6 MeV using an activation technique. The results are compared to the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations using the NON-SMOKER and MOST codes. The sensitivity of the calculations to variations in the optical proton potential and the nuclear level density was studied. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental reaction rates was found for the reactions 74Se(p,gamma)75Br and 82Se(p,n)82Br., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures (in 12 eps files), accepted for publication in Phys. The (p,$\gamma$) cross sections of three stable Sr isotopes have been measured in the astrophysically relevant energy range. These reactions are important for the $p$-process in stellar nucleosynthesis and, in addition, the reaction cross sections in the mass region up to 100 are also of importance concerning the $rp$-process associated with explosive hydrogen and helium burning. It is speculated that this $rp$-process could be responsible for a certain amount of $p$-nuclei in this mass region. The (p,$\gamma$) cross sections of $^{84,86,87}$Sr isotopes were determined using an activation technique. The measurements were carried out at the 5 MV Van de Graaff accelerator of the ATOMKI, Debrecen. The resulting cross sections are compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results for $^{84}$Sr(p,$\gamma$)$^{85}$Y whereas the other two reactions exhibit differences that increase with mass number.
