Abstract

We observed a distinct peak in the Λp invariant mass spectrum of He3(K−,Λp)n, well below mK+2mp, i.e., the mass threshold of the K− to be bound to two protons. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region q=350∼650 MeV/c, one can kinematically separate the peak from the quasi-free process, K‾N→K‾N followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons K‾NN→ΛN. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit–Wigner pole position at BKpp=47±3(stat.)−6+3(sys.) MeV having a width ΓKpp=115±7(stat.)−20+10(sys.) MeV, and the S-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter QKpp=381±14(stat.)−0+57(sys.) MeV/c, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness – “K−pp”. Abstract

We will measure the x‐rays from kaonic 3He and 4He 3d→2p transition by using silicon drift detectors. Our precision goal is set to 1 eV to provide crucial information on the kaon‐nucleus strong interaction in the low energy limit. The experiment is to be performed as one of the first experiment in the J‐PARC hadron facility (J‐PARC E17). An overview and the present status of the experiment are presented.

Abstract

The KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K) has begun its investigation of neutrino oscillations suggested by atmospheric neutrino observations. Twenty-eight neutrino events have been detected in coincidence with the expected arrival time of the beam in the 22.5 kt fiducial volume of Super--Kamiokande, the far detector at 250 km distance. The expectation is 37.8+3.5-3.8, derived using measurements of neutrino interactions in a near detector and extrapolation using a beam simulation validated by a measurement of pion kinematics after production and focusing. Abstract

A high-intensity, high-resolution pion beam line has been proposed for the Japan Hadron Facility. An intensity of 109 and a momentum resolution of 10 -4 will be available. High-resolution, high-statistics, and high-sensitivity spectroscopic studies of hypernuclei will be possible.

Abstract

We have measured for the first time yields of both neutron‐proton and neutron‐neutron pairs emitted from the non‐mesonic weak decay of the Λ5He and Λ12C hypernuclei, produced via the (π+,K+) reaction. From the yields of both the back‐to‐back np‐pair events and nn‐pair events, we have directly determined the ratio of the neutron‐ and proton‐induced decay widths, Γn(Λn→nn)/Γp(Λp→np). Meanwhile, we have also determined the quenching of the observed numbers of single nucleons and coincident nucleon pairs compared with theoretical calculations. Our results suggest that contributions from the two‐nucleon‐induced three‐body process ΛNN→NNN are significant.

Abstract

We have measured the angular correlation of the pair nucleons np and nn emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of Λ12C produced via the (π+,K+) reaction in coincidence measurement. The Λp → np and Λn → nn modes were clearly identified by measuring the back‐to‐back correlation of the emitted nucleon pairs which is the characteristic of two‐body kinematics. From the measured nucleon pair numbers Nnn and Nnp, the ratio Γn/Γp of the partial decay widths Γn(Λn → nn) and Γp(Λp → np) of Λ12C was extracted to be 0.51 ± 0.13(stat)±0.04(syst); this result is almost free from the ambiguity due to the nuclear final state interaction and 3‐body decay process, which were inherent in the previous results. The obtained Γn/Γp ratio of Λ12C (p‐shell) is close to that of Λ5He (s‐shell). The results are consistent with those of recent theoretical calculations.
