Abstract

A measurement of direct photon production in {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 1.5 GeV/c . The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis of quark-gluon-plasma formation.

Abstract

Three-particle correlations have been measured for identified {pi}{sup -} from central 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions by the WA98 experiment at CERN. A substantial contribution of the genuine three-body correlation has been found as expected for a mainly chaotic and symmetric source.

Abstract

The Delta(++)-resonance production in central 158 A GeV Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at the CERN SPS has been studied. The Delta(++) production was estimated from the invariant mass spectrum of p pi(+)-pairs by subtracting a mixed event background. The measured Delta(++) abundance is compared with the results from other experiments at lower energies, and with a model calculation assuming thermal and chemical equilibrium. Abstract

An event-by-event analysis of the azimuthal angular correlation with respect to the reaction plane has been carried out for K+ and pi(+) emission near mid-rapidity in 158 A . GeV Pb + Pb collisions. In semi-central collisions, K+ mesons are found to be preferentially emitted out of the reaction plane, while pi(+) mesons are emitted in the reaction plane. The results suggest that the kaon emission is influenced by in-medium potential effects in addition to collective flow effects. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Recent results of the WA98 experiment with Pb induced reactions at 158. A GeV are presented. The scaling properties of the transverse energy and the charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity with the number of participants is studied. Neutral pion spectra are compared to hydrodynamical parameterizations. The analysis of collective flow at target rapidity and at midrapidity is presented. The status of the study of direct photons and the search for isospin fluctuations is discussed.

Abstract

Neutral pion production in central 158A GeV [sup 208]Pb+ [sup 208] Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The [pi][sup 0] transverse mass spectrum has been analyzed in terms of a thermal model with hydrodynamic expansion. The high accuracy and large kinematic coverage of the measurement allow one to limit previously noted ambiguities in the extracted freeze-out parameters. The results are shown to be sensitive to the shape of the velocity distribution at freeze-out. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society ]

Abstract

The production of neutral pions in 158A GeV {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Transverse momentum spectra are studied for the range 0.3{le}m{sub T}{minus}m{sub 0}{le}4.0 GeV /c . The results for central collisions are compared to various models. The centrality dependence of the neutral pion spectral shape and yield is investigated. An invariance of the spectral shape and a simple scaling of the yield with the number of participating nucleons is observed for centralities with greater than about 30thinspthinspparticipating nucleons. Abstract

We present recent results obtained with the WA98 experiment at CERN SPS. The experiment consists of large acceptance hadron and photon spectrometers which allow to study many aspects of heavy ion collisions. We use event-by-event measurements of charged and neutral particle multiplicity to establish the limit on the prodution of Disoriented Chiral Condensates. We use the Plastic Ball detector together with a set of tracking chambers to study collective flow. The tracking chambers together with the excellent particle identification allow us to study the production of Δ ++ . The high resolution photon calorimeter array allows us to study inclusive photon and π 0 spectra and search for excess direct photons.

Abstract

Anisotropic transverse flow has been studied with a magnetic spectrometer at midrapidity and the Plastic Ball detector at target rapidity in the WA98 experiment. Our preliminary results show the existence of directed and elliptic flow in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions. The magnitude of the directed flow is found to be significantly smaller than those observed at the AGS energies.

Abstract

The restoration of chiral symmetry and its subsequent breaking through a phase transition has been predicted to create regions of Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC). This phenomenon has been predicted to cause anomalous fluctuations in the relative production of charged and neutral pions in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions. The WA98 experiment has been used to measure charged and photon multiplicities in the central region of 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. In a sample of 212646 events, no clear DCC signal can be distinguished. Abstract

Azimuthal correlations of photons produced at mid-rapidity in 200 A GeV S + Au collisions have been studied using a preshower photon multiplicity detector in the WA93 experiment. The Fourier expansion method has been employed to estimate the event plane via the anisotropy of the event as a function of centrality. The event plane correlation technique has been used to determine the true event anisotropy, beyond the anisotropy which arises due to finite multiplicity. The VENUS event generator with rescattering and proper simulation of the detector response can explain only a portion of the observed anisotropy. The residual anisotropy is found to be of the order of 5% for semi-central collisions. This suggests that directed collective flow of the produced particles is present at SPS energies. Abstract

The first evidence of directed flow at 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions is observed using the Plastic Ball detector in WA98 experiment. The azimuthal angle of the total transverse energy, Phi(o), is determined for each event using the observed protons in the Plastic Ball. A clear azimuthal asymmetry of fragments is observed with respect to Phi(o). The degree of azimuthal asymmetry is found to be largest in mid-central collisions, which is consistent with the picture of the collective flow.The p(t) spectra of particles measured in the mid-rapidity spectrometer has been studied in conjunction with the Plastic Ball, and different p(t) slopes with respect to Phi(o) for proton and pi(+) are observed.

Abstract

A search for the production of direct photons in S + An collisions at 200A GeV has been carried out in the CERN-WA80 experiment. For central collisions the measured photon excess at each pr, averaged over the range 0.5 less than or equal to p(T) less than or equal to less than or equal to 2.5 GeV/c, corresponded to 5.0% of the total inclusive photon yield with a statistical error of sigma(stat) = 0.8% and a systematic error of sigma(syst) = 5.8%. Upper limits on the invariant yield for direct photon production at the 90% C.L. are presented. Possible implications for the dynamics of high-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Abstract

Correlations between protons are studied in the target fragmentation region of reactions of protons and16O with C, Cu, Ag, Au and of32S with Al and Au at 200A GeV. The emitted protons were measured with the Plastic Ball detector in the WA80 experiment at the CERN SPS. The comparison of the correlation function with calculations, assuming a spherical, gaussian shaped source with a lifetime τ=0 fm/c, allows the extraction of radius parameters. The values are very close to those expected from the geometry of the target nuclei and increase with the target mass as αATarget1/3. Even in proton induced reactions the whole target nucleus is involved. The dependence of the radii on centrality, polar angleθlab, and energy, and their relation to measured proton yields are presented.

Abstract

First results on the measurement of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in central 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented. The charged versus neutral correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal size are analyzed by two different methods. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and to those from different types of mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions. Abstract

Results from the multiplicity distributions of inclusive photons and charged particles, scaling of particle multiplicities, event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations, and charged-neutral fluctuations in 158$\cdot A$ GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented and discussed. A scaling of charged particle multiplicity as $N_{part}^{1.07\pm 0.05}$ and photons as $N_{part}^{1.12\pm 0.03}$ have been observed, indicating violation of naive wounded nucleon model. The analysis of localized charged-neutral fluctuation indicates a model-independent demonstration of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particles and photons in limited azimuthal regions. Abstract

Study of elliptic emission for identified particles has been performed in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions near mid-rapidity region. Our preliminary results indicate the existence of the in-plane elliptic emission for {pi}{sup +} and proton, and out-of-plane elliptic emission for K+ in semi-central collisions. In addition, two-pion interferometry is studied as a function of the pair direction relative to the reaction plane.

Abstract

The photon multiplicity has been measured for the first time in S+Au collisions at 200A GeV over a wide pseudorapidity range (2.8{le}{eta}{le}5.2) employing a fine granularity preshower detector. The pseudorapidity density of photons increases with centrality, reaching {approximately}200 at the highest centrality studied. Abstract

Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC) have been predicted to form in high energy heavy ion collisions where the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD has been restored. This leads to large imbalances in the production of charged to neutral pions. Sophisticated analysis methods are being developed to disentangle DCC events out of the large background of events with conventionally produced particles. We present a short review of current analysis methods and future prospects., 12 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The mean transverse momentum of photons has been determined on an event by event basis in S + Au collisions at 200 A.GeV from the ratio of the measured electromagnetic transverse energy (E-T(em)) to the photon multiplicity (N-gamma). The average value obtained is similar to that determined for the same system using spectroscopic techniques. The centrality dependence of the measured values are in agreement with the predictions of the VENUS event generator. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Inclusive photons of low transverse momenta have been measured in 200 GeV/nucleon {sup 32}S+Au collisions at the CERN SPS. Data were taken in the WA93 experiment using a small acceptance BGO detector with longitudinal segmentation. The results are compared to WA80 measurements for the same system and results from hadron decay calculations. Abstract

We report on the design, construction, and test of a new gain monitoring system developed for the 10 000-module lead-glass calorimeter in the WA98 experiment. The system combines precision monitoring and modularity according to the general detector design. It is based on pulsed LEDs and photodiodes. The complete system was successfully used in an electron calibration and during the first Pb-ion beam time at the CERN SPS.

First results from the WA98 experiment on 33 TeV 208 Pb ion reactions with various targets measured at the CERN SPS are presented. Data on transverse energy production and particle multiplicity are discussed. Special emphasis is laid on photon and neutral meson production.

Abstract

We have studied the azimuthal angle distributions of identified charged particles near mid-rapidity region in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. Our preliminary results show that π+ mesons and protons seem to be emitted in the reaction plane, while out-of-plane for K+ mesons. This phenomenon might be explained by the existence of another possible effect such as in-medium potential as well as the collective motion.
