Abstract: International audience; “Stretched” states are examples of the simplest nuclear excitations in the continuum, thus offering an excellent testing ground for various theoretical approaches. The decay of the stretched single-particle state in 13C, located at 21.47 MeV, was investigated in an experiment performed recently at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Kraków. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay channels of this resonance was obtained by employing coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on the 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei. The new experimental findings will be used for testing predictions obtained by the Gamow Shell Model calculations.

Abstract: A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened $$\gamma $$ γ -ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $$^{18}\text {O}(7.0\, \text {MeV/u})+\,^{181}\text {Ta}$$ 18 O ( 7.0 MeV/u ) + 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $$^{17}\text {O}$$ 17 O and $$^{19}\text {O}$$ 19 O , with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $$\sim 20{-}400\,\text {fs}$$ ∼ 20 - 400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $$\gamma $$ γ -tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Abstract: The breakup of Be-9 is studied via an inelastic scattering experiment on a proton target at 5.6 A MeV in inverse kinematics. Two of the three cluster constituents (alpha and alpha) as well as the proton target recoil were recorded in a triple coincidence mode allowing a full kinematics approach analysis. In this respect relative alpha - alpha and alpha - n, Q-value and Be-9 excitation spectra, energy spectra for all fragments as well as the energy spectrum of the recoil proton were reconstructed. A clear signature of the two breakup sequential modes (He-5 + He-4 and Be-8 + n) was identified via the recoiling proton reconstructed spectra together with the direct breakup decay. A strong He-5+He-4 mode was observed compatible with previous beta decay experiments.

Abstract: The exclusive breakup of the Borromean nucleus Be9 incident on a proton target at 5.67 MeV/nucleon was studied with a triple coincidence requirement between the two breakup α fragments and the recoiling proton. The analysis was performed using an event-by-event code in a full kinematics approach, and Q-value spectra, relative spectra, and energy spectra of all reaction products were determined. Clear signatures of the three breakup modes: α+α+n, Be8+n, and He5+He4 were observed in the recoiling proton spectra and the rates of these modes were quantified. © 2020 American Physical Society.

Abstract: In a fusion-evaporation reaction, nuclei are produced by evaporating light-charged particles and neutrons from the compound nucleus. Typically, a nucleus of interest is produced as a result of a part of the total cross-section and, in order to guarantee a good channel discrimination, a particle detector, like the EUCLIDES $4\pi$ Si-ball array, is necessary. EUCLIDES has been quoted in more than a hundred publications resulting from many experiments performed in combination with the EUROBALL and GASP $\gamma$-ray spectrometers. The present paper reports on the upgraded version of EUCLIDES, that is presently coupled to the new GALILEO $\gamma$-ray spectrometer, installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, INFN. The design, characteristics and performance of the EUCLIDES array are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The elastic scattering process for the nuclear reactions induced by the Radioactive Ion Beams 7Be and 8B on a 208Pb target was measured for the first time in the energy range around the Coulomb barrier. Extensive theoretical calculations within the framework of the optical model were performed. An excellent agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions was achieved for the reaction 7Be + 208Pb, while a comprehensive understanding of the reaction dynamics induced by the more exotic projectile 8B is still far to be reached. Predictions of the cross section for the breakup for both systems will also be given., The 8B experiment was performed at RI Beam Factory operated by RIKEN Nishina Center and CNS, University of Tokyo. Abstract: Studying interactions of radioactive ions with neutrons is particularly demanding and has been performed only in a few cases. Some of these interactions are crucial in several astrophysical contexts. In the present work, the case of the 7Be destruction induced by the (n, α) reaction is investigated at the energies typical of the primordial nucleosynthesis by means of the Trojan Horse Method applied to the 2H(7Be, αα)p quasi-free reaction. The 7Be(n, α)4He cross-section has been measured in a single experiment from ∼2 MeV down to cosmological energies. The corresponding deduced reaction rate has been adopted to evaluate the impact on big bang nucleosynthesis and on the lithium problem., This work has been partially supported by the Italian Ministry of the University under grant RBFR082838 and "LNS-Astrofisica Nucleare (fondi premiali)." Abstract: Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 26-SEP 02, 2018 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000463866500052, Recent ab initio calculations pointed out the importance of the three-body terms of the nuclear interaction, in the description of the structure of n-rich systems. The state lifetimes in light n-rich carbon and oxygen nuclei have been predicted to be sensitive to the three-body terms and, in this context, an experiment, aiming at the measurement of these lifetimes, was performed in GANIL in July 2017 with the AGATA and PARIS arrays coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Abstract: New data for the elastic scattering of Be9 from protons were obtained and analyzed together with data from the literature in a coherent coupled-reaction-channels approach. The new measurements were performed in inverse kinematics at 15, 22 and 51 MeV (1.67, 2.44, and 5.67 MeV/nucleon) by detecting the heavy ejectile in the MAGNEX spectrometer. This enabled an almost full angular distribution to be obtained, extending the results to forward angles where calculated values coincide and give the opportunity of proper normalization. Previous inconsistencies in absolute normalization between different data sets are removed. Standard collective model form factors fail to reproduce the inelastic scattering to the 2.43 MeV 5/2- state of Be9, suggesting that a more sophisticated approach based on the cluster structure of Be9 is required to describe this process. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Abstract: International audience; An experiment aiming at measuring lifetimes of the second 2+ excited states in neutron-rich C and O isotopes was recently performed at the GANIL laboratory, in France. In these nuclei, recent ab initio calculations provide a detailed description of the nuclear excited states, predicting a strong sensitivity of the electromagnetic transition probabilities to the details of the nucleon–nucleon interactions, especially in connection with the role played by the three-body (NNN) forces. Thus, the measurement of 2 + states lifetimes in this region will be a stringent test of the importance of including the NNN forces in describing the electromagnetic properties of selected nuclear states. This contribution reports on the status of the experimental analysis for the case of lifetimes in 20O.

Abstract: An in-beam test of two pixel-type silicon detectors of the TRACE detector project has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the lowest kinetic energy values at which isotopic identification of heavy-ion reactions products with mass $ A\sim 10$ is possible, by using a single-layer silicon detector. Two separate read-out chains, analog and digital, were used, and the Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the particle identification matrices for the digitally processed data. The results confirmed the high capability of the Pulse Shape Analysis method which can be used for light ion identification, with performances similar to the analog approach. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained for Li and Be isotopes, however, the presence of a significant background from alpha particles severely limited the data analysis in the lower energy region. Due to this effect, the identification of the light products (7, 6Li isotopes) could be possible down to $ \sim 24.5$ MeV only, while the 9, 7Be isotopes were separable down to $ \sim 29$ MeV. This gives the value of $ < 4$ MeV/nucleon as the lowest kinetic energy for light products identification by using the pixel-type detectors of the TRACE project, in the present experimental conditions.

Abstract: The scattering process of the Radioactive Ion Beam 7 Be from a 208 Pb target was measured at three near-barrier energies. The quasi-elastic angular distributions were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross sections. The results are compared with those obtained for the reactions induced by the mirror projectile 7 Li and by the lightest particle-stable lithium isotope 6 Li on the same target. The angular distributions for the production of the two 7 Be constituent clusters, namely 3 He and 4 He, were also measured. In agreement with what observed for the interaction of 7 Be with lighter targets, the production of the heavier helium isotope resulted to be much more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart.

Abstract: The scattering process of weakly-bound nuclei at Coulomb barrier energies provides deep insights on the reaction dynamics induced by exotic nuclei. Within this framework, we measured for the first time the scattering process of the short-lived Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) 8B (Sp = 0.1375 MeV) from a 208Pb target at 50 MeV beam energy. The 8B RIB was produced by means of the in-flight facility CRIB (RIKEN, Japan) with an average intensity on target of 10 kHz and a purity about 25%. Elastically scattering ions were detected in the angular range θc.m. = 10 ◦ -160 ◦ by means of the detector array EXPADES. A preliminary optical model analysis indicates a total reaction cross section of about 1 b, a value, once reduced, 2-3 times larger than those obtained for the reactions induced by the stable weakly-bound projectiles 6,7Li on a 208Pb target in the energy range around the Coulomb barrier.

Abstract: The production of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ particles, the cluster constituents of $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$, in the $^{7}\mathrm{Be}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ reaction was studied at three near-barrier energies, namely 13, 20, and 22 MeV. Angular distribution measurements were performed at each energy, and the data were analyzed in both statistical model and Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) frameworks in order to disentangle the degree of competition between direct and compound channels. The energy evolution of the ratio of direct to total reaction cross section was mapped in comparison with similar data for $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ projectiles on a $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ target. The results indicate larger transfer contributions for collisions involving the mirror nuclei $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ than in the $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ case. Fusion cross sections were deduced, taking into account the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle cross sections due to compound-nucleus formation and particle multiplicities deduced from our statistical model framework. It was found that fusion is compatible with systematics and single-barrier penetration cross sections to within an uncertainty band of 10% to 20%. Indications of fusion hindrance for $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ compared to $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, starting from the barrier and below it, are given. This hindrance is attributed to the existence of large transfer channels. Furthermore, the experimental results, analyzed in the DWBA framework, suggest $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ transfer as the dominant direct reaction mechanism.

Abstract: This work aims at investigating the projectile binding energy influence on the reaction dynamics, introducing new results and new data analysis methods in order to overcome some typically encountered problems, such as the identification of reaction products differing by few mass units and the discrimination of direct reaction processes. The $^{17}\mathrm{O}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ collision was studied at five near-barrier energies employing a compact experimental setup consisting of four double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSSDs). Different reaction processes, namely the elastic and inelastic scattering and the $1n$ stripping, were discriminated by means of a detailed analysis of the experimental energy spectra based on Monte Carlo simulations. The elastic scattering angular distributions were investigated within the framework of the optical model using Woods-Saxon and double-folding potentials. The total reaction cross sections were extracted and the reduced cross sections compared with those obtained for $^{17}\mathrm{F}$ (${S}_{p}=0.600$ MeV), the mirror nucleus of $^{17}\mathrm{O}$ (${S}_{n}=4.143$ MeV), and for the tightly bound $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ projectile. The $^{17}\mathrm{O}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ total reaction cross sections were larger than those for $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ on the same target at the lowest energies studied, becoming identical, within errors, as the incident energy increased above the Coulomb barrier. This behavior was related to a strong contribution from the $1n$-stripping channel at the lowest energies.

Abstract: WOS: 000295765100014, The first implementation of the AGATA spectrometer consisting of five triple germanium detector clusters has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, INFN. This setup has two major goals, the first one is to validate the gamma-tracking concept and the second is to perform an experimental physics program using the stable beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex. A large variety of physics topics will be addressed during this campaign, aiming to investigate both neutron and proton-rich nuclei. The setup has been designed to be coupled with the large-acceptance magnetic-spectrometer PRISMA. Therefore, the in-beam prompt gamma rays detected with AGATA will be measured in coincidence with the products of multinucleon-transfer and deep-inelastic reactions measured by PRISMA. Moreover, the setup is versatile enough to host ancillary detectors, including the heavy-ion detector DANTE, the gamma-ray detector array HELENA, the Cologne plunger for lifetime measurements and the Si-pad telescope TRACE. In this paper the design; characteristics and performance figures of the setup will be described.

Abstract: International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract: We investigated the reaction dynamics induced by the 7Be,8B+208Pb collisions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Charged particles originated by both the col- lisions were detected by means of 6 ΔE-Eres telescopes of a newly developed detector array. Experimental data were analysed within the framework of the Optical Model and the total reaction cross-sections were compared together and with the 6,7Li+208Pb colli-sion data. According to the preliminary results, 7Be nucleus reactivity is rather similar to the 7Li one whereas the 8B+208Pb total reaction cross section appears to be much larger than those measured for reactions induced by the other weakly-bound projectiles on the same target.

Abstract: The properties of a cylindrical 1 00 � 1 00 LaBr3:Ce scintillator (Brillance 380) were investigated. The energy resolution at g-ray energy of 662 keV was measured to be smaller than 3% and the intrinsic time resolution was found to be E230 ps. Two different aspects were investigated. The first is the detailed study of the crystal self-activity, emitting a and b particles and g-rays, by measuring coincidences with g-rays in HPGe, BGO and BaF2 detectors. In particular, the coincidence with an HPGe detector allowed to isolate clearly the different contributions from 227 Ac (chemical homologue of lanthanum) and its daughter nuclei down to the stable 207 Pb. The second aspect is the determination of the efficiency for g-ray detection, measured at 1 MeV and simulated using GEANT4 up to 15 MeV as a function of the detector size.

Abstract: A systematic study of isotopic effects in the break-up of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory. Searching for signals of criticality in the fragment production we have applied the model independent universal fluctuations theory already proposed to track criticality signals in multifragmentation to our data. Abstract: In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

Abstract: The energy and angular distributions of $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ ions produced in the $^{7}\mathrm{Be}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ reaction at a bombarding energy of 22 MeV have been measured for the first time. The yield of the heavier helium isotope was four to five times more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart, ruling out the possibility that in this energy range the $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ reaction dynamics is dominated by the exclusive breakup process $^{7}\mathrm{Be}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}}^{3}\mathrm{He}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ (${S}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=1.586$ MeV). Extensive kinematic and theoretical calculations suggest that the $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ ions mostly originate from the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$-stripping process and the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ production is mainly triggered by the fusion-evaporation channel. The role played by the breakup, $^{3}\mathrm{He}$-stripping, $1n$-stripping, and $1n$-pickup processes is also discussed.

Abstract: The Rare ISotopes INvestigation at GSI project combines the former EUROBALL Ge-Cluster detectors, the MINIBALL Ge detectors, BaF2--HECTOR detectors, and the fragment separator at GSI for high-resolution in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements with radioactive beams. These secondary beams produced at relativistic energies are used for Coulomb excitation or secondary fragmentation experiments in order to explore the nuclear structure of the projectiles or projectile like nuclei by measuring de-excitation photons. The newly designed detector array is described and the performance characteristics are given. Moreover, particularities of the experimental technique are discussed.

Abstract: The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new add-on circuit structure that swiftly desaturates a digitized charge preamplifier for ionizing-radiation detectors when an energetic event occurs, or when a burst of piled up events puts it into saturation. The amplitude of the energetic event can even be reconstructed with a time-over-threshold (TOT) measurement of the fast-reset transient. With an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) range of 10 MeV, we were able to measure events of up to 100 MeV. The circuit is conceived for experiments where a spurious background of energetic particles and photons exists, such those with exotic beams in the new generation of nuclear-physics research facilities.

Abstract: We studied the reaction dynamics induced at Coulomb barrier energies by the weakly-bound Radioactive Ion Beam 7Be (Sα = 1.586 MeV) on medium-mass (58Ni) and heavy (208Pb) targets. The experiments were performed at INFN-LNL (Italy), where a 2-3×105 pps 7Be secondary beam was produced with the RIB in-flight facility EXOTIC. Charged reaction products were detected by means of high-granularity silicon detectors in rather wide angular ranges. Abstract: Total reaction cross sections for the radioactive nucleus 8Li on 90Zr are reported at the near-barrier energies of 18.5 and 21.5MeV, derived from quasi-elastic scattering measurements. An analysis of the quasi-elastic scattering results is performed within an optical model framework using the BDM3Y1 interaction and total reaction cross sections are deduced. These quantities, appropriately reduced, are compared with previous data obtained in elastic scattering measurements with well and weakly bound projectiles on various targets and a formula for predicting total reaction cross sections with an uncertainty of $ \sim 20$% is obtained. Further on, the ratios of direct to total reaction cross sections are estimated for 6,8Li on various targets and are compared with CDCC or CRC calculations. The energy dependence of the optical potential is also discussed.

Abstract: International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or lightcomplex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energieshas been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of thesymmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturationdensities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows ofneutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au,96Zr+96Zr and 96Ru+96Ru collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon with theLarge Area Neutron Detector LAND as part of a setup with severaladditional detection systems used for the event characterization. Flowresults obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictionsof the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to lineardensity dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlierFOPI-LAND data.

Abstract: In the framework of the HADES (High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer) collaboration we are developing the Time Of Flight (TOF) wall subdetector. In order to efficiently select events with e/sup +/e/sup -/ pairs produced in the nuclear matter, the TOF wall must be able to resolve electrons from pions up to 0.5 GeV/c and from protons up to 2 GeV/c. Because the short flight path of about 2 m requires a 100-150 ps time resolution, we are building a granular system made of scintillator rods readout on both ends by means of photomultipliers, capable of such performance.

Abstract: A measurement of the high-lying states in 208Pb has been made using 17O beams at 20 MeV/u. The gamma decay following inelastic excitation was measured with the detector system AGATA Demonstrator based on segmented HPGe detectors, coupled to an array of large volume LaBr3:Ce scintillators and to an array of Si detectors. Preliminary results in comparison with (γ,γ’) data, for states in the 5-8 MeV energy interval, are presented.

Abstract: The construction of a new array to study femtoscopy and multi-particle correlations in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies (E=20-1000 AMeV) has been started at the INFN. The project, named FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) is aimed at developing of a detection system with high pixelation capabilities in order to perform precision measurements of particle correlations for nuclear dynamics and spectroscopy. We present first detection simulations for FARCOS and first results related to the commissioning of CsI(T1) crystals, an important detection stage of each telescope.

Abstract: The quasi elastic scattering of a 17O projectile from a 58Ni target has been studied at beam energies ranging from 42.5 to 55.0 MeV in 2.5 MeV steps. The total reaction cross sections were derived from the measured angular distributions by using an optical model fit within the coupled-channel code FRESCO. These cross sections are very similar to those measured for 17F (loosely bound by 0.6 MeV), mirror nucleus of 17O (tightly bound by 4.14 MeV). This outcome points out that, in this energy range, the small binding energy of the 17F valence proton has negligible influence onto the reactivity of such a loosely bound projectile, contrary to simple expectations, and to what observed for other loosely bound nuclei. The reaction dynamics seems to be influenced mainly by the Coulomb interaction which is similar for both mirror projectiles.

Abstract: The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment., 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract: The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-spectator scenario, are determined empirically by searching for an optimum reproduction of the measured fragment-charge distributions and correlations. An overall very good agreement is obtained. The possible modification of the liquid-drop parameters of the fragment description in the hot freeze-out environment is studied, and a significant reduction of the symmetry-term coefficient is found necessary to reproduce the mean neutron-to-proton ratios /Z and the isoscaling parameters of Z, 23 pages, 29 figures, published in Physical Review C

Abstract: Charged reaction products originated from the interaction of the loosely bound radioactive ion beam {sup 17}F (S{sub p}=600 keV) with the proton-shell closed {sup 58}Ni target were measured at two colliding energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier. The collected data were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to deduce the reaction cross section and to investigate the role played by inelastic excitations, transfer channels, and the breakup process {sup 17}F{yields}{sup 16}O+p at near-barrier energies. The reaction cross section at the lower {sup 17}F energy showed a moderate enhancement ({approx}20%) with respect to that of the system {sup 16}O+{sup 58}Ni. At this energy direct reaction channels were also found to be more relevant than those for the reaction induced from the tightly bound projectile {sup 16}O on the same target. Both features could be strongly related to the very low binding energy of the {sup 17}F valence proton.

Abstract: The discriminant-analysis method has been applied to optimize the exotic-beam charge recognition in a projectile fragmentation experiment. The experiment was carried out at the GSI using the fragment separator (FRS) to produce and select the relativistic secondary beams, and the ALADIN setup to measure their fragmentation products following collisions with Sn target nuclei. The beams of neutron poor isotopes around 124La and 107Sn were selected to study the isospin dependence of the limiting temperature of heavy nuclei by comparing with results for stable 124Sn projectiles. A dedicated detector to measure the projectile charge upstream of the reaction target was not used, and alternative methods had to be developed. Abstract: Within the frame of the commissioning of a new experimental apparatus EXPADES we undertook the measurement of the elastic scattering angular distribution for the system 17 O+ 208 Pb at energy around the Coulomb barrier. The reaction dynamics induced by loosely bound Radioactive Ion Beams is currently being extensively studied [4]. In particular the study of the elastic scattering process allows to obtain direct information on the total reaction cross section of the exotic nuclei. In order to understand the effect of the low binding energy on the reaction mechanism it is important to compare radioactive weakly bound nuclei with stable strongly-bound nuclei. In this framework the study of the 17 O+ 208 Pb elastic scattering can be considered to be complementary to a previous measurement of the total reaction cross section for the system 17 F+ 208 Pb at energies of 86, 90.4 MeV [5, 6]. The data will be compared with those obtained for the neighboring systems 16,18 O+ 208 Pb and others available in literature.

Abstract: The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied in a recent experiment at the GSI laboratory with the ALADiN forward spectrometer coupled to the LAND neutron detector. Besides a primary beam of 124Sn, also secondary beams of 124La and 107Sn delivered by the FRS fragment separator have been used in order to extend the range of isotopic compositions of the produced spectator sources. With the achieved mass resolution of \Delta A/A \approx 1.5%, lighter isotopes with atomic numbers Z \le 10 are individually resolved. The presently ongoing analyses of the measured isotope yields focus on isoscaling and its relation to the properties of hot fragments at freeze-out and on the derivation of chemical freeze-out temperatures which are found to be independent of the isotopic composition of the studied systems. Abstract: We investigated the reaction induced by the Radioactive Ion Beam 7Be on the closed proton shell nucleus 58Ni at 22.0 MeV bombarding energy. The 7Be beam was produced by means of the in-flight technique with the facility EXOTIC at INFN-LNL (Italy). Charged reaction products were mass and charge identified in a rather wide angular range and their energy distributions were analyzed to infer some information on the production mechanism. The relevance of direct processes, especially 3He- and 4He-stripping, as well as compound nucleus reactions is critically reviewed.

Abstract: The study of reactions induced by exotic weakly bound nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier had attracted a large interest in the last decade, since the features of these nuclei can deeply affect the reaction dynamics. The discrimination between different reaction mechanisms is, in general, a rather difficult task. It can be achieved by using detector arrays covering high solid angle and with high granularity that allow to measure the reaction products and, possibly, coincidences between them, as, for example, recently done for stable weakly bound nuclei [1, 2]. We investigated the collision of the weakly bound nucleus 7Be on a 58Ni target at the beam energy of 1.1 times the Coulomb barrier, measuring the elastic scattering angular distribution and the energy and angular distributions of 3He and 4He. The 7Be radioactive ion beam was produced by the facility EXOTIC at INFN-LNL with an energy of 22 MeV and an intensity of ~3×105 pps. Results showed that the 4He yeld is about 4 times larger than 3He yield, suggesting that reaction mechanisms other than the break-up mostly produce the He isotopes. Theoretical calculations for transfer channels and compound nucleus reactions suggest that complete fusion accounts for (41±5%) of the total reaction cross section extracted from optical model analysis of the elastic scattering data, and that 3He and 4He stripping are the most populated reaction channels among direct processes. Eventually estimation of incomplete fusion contributions to the 3,4He production cross sections was performed through semi-classical calculations with the code PLATYPUS [3].

45. Ultra-Fast Low-Noise Preamplifier for Bulky HPGe γ-Ray Sensors

Abstract: We present a fast low-noise hybrid charge-sensitive preamplifier for germanium position-sensitive /spl gamma/-ray detectors. In conjunction with a bulky 36-fold segmented detector it provided a record resolution of 1.71/1.77 keV fwhm on the 1.17/1.33 MeV /sup 60/Co lines. The preamplifier rise time, as measured at the test bench, is as fast as 7.5 ns, with a detector capacitance of 23 pF and with a 5 m 50 /spl Omega/ twisted-pair cable connected at its output. The dynamic range of the preamplifier input stage is as large as 92 dB, ranging from 0.275 fC to 9.9 pC, i.e. from 5 keV to 180 MeV in terms of photon energy. On signals larger than 2 MeV a fast reset (/spl sim/10 MeV//spl mu/s) is enforced to reduce the system dead time. An estimate of the amplitude of such large signals can be derived from the reset time, still obtaining a high resolution. Using this technique we achieved an energy resolution of 0.3% at 16.7 MeV.

Abstract: In Neutron time-of-flight facilities an intense flux of gamma-rays and high-energy particles commonly called gamma-flash is generated in the neutron production. Due to the high energy deposited, the gamma-flash often results in a saturated pulse, which may make the detectors blind for a long time and event produced by neutrons above few MeV cannot be detected. In order to decrease this effect we have developed a Charge sensitive preamplifier with an active circuit for an ultra fast de-saturation.

Abstract: Isotopic identification of nuclear products in heavy-ion physics with stable and exotic beams (RIB) is of crucial importance for understanding the behaviour of nuclear matter far away from normal density. This is true for both nuclear structure and nuclear reaction studies. The recent upgrading of the 4pi CHIMERA detector by pulse shape methods in silicon detectors in connection with the time of flight (TOF) and the energy loss (DE-E) methods allows for light charged particles and light fragments (Z < 10) identification in a broad kinetic energy range from the Coulomb barrier up to tens of MeV/nucleons. After a brief discussion of the experimental methodology used in the detector to identify the particles some relevant applications in the field of nuclear reaction studies with stable and exotic beams.

Abstract: A systematic study of isospin effects in the breakup of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory (Darmstadt). Four different projectiles 197Au, 124La, 124Sn and 107Sn, all with an incident energy of 600 AMeV, have been used, thus allowing a study of various combinations of masses and N/Z ratios in the entrance channel. The measurement of the momentum vector and of the charge of all projectile fragments with Z>1 entering the acceptance of the ALADiN magnet has been performed with the high efficiency and resolution achieved with the TP-MUSIC IV detector. The Rise and Fall behavior of the mean multiplicity of IMFs as a function of Zbound and its dependence on the isotopic composition has been determined for the studied systems. Other observables investigated so far include mean N/Z values of the emitted light fragments and neutron multiplicities. Abstract: To investigate complex fragment emission in intermediate energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, an array of three-element telescopes has been constructed. The array is designed to measure energy, charge and emission angles of fragments with Z values from 2 up to the projectile atomic number when studying reactions in reverse kinematics. In this case it has a good efficiency even for events with complex fragment high multiplicity. Each telescope is made of an ionization chamber (filled with CF 4 at a pressure up to 300 mbar), a Si detector (500 μm thick, position sensitive in two dimensions) and a CsI(Tl) scintillator with photodiode readout.

Abstract: In this paper we suggest that some key physical parameters of High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) segmented detectors, including segment capacitance and leakage current, can be derived from standard noise measurements. These parameters are relevant when designing and optimizing the front-end electronics.
