Abstract: Results on density integrals Fq(Q2) and correlation integrals Kq(Q2) are presented for the first time in muon-nucleon scattering at ∼ 490 GeV, using data from the E665 experiment at the Tevatron of Fermilab. A clear rise of the Fq integrals with decreasing size of the phase-space cells (“intermittency”) is observed for pairs and triplets of negative hadrons whereas the effect is much weaker for mixed charge combinations. From these findings it is concluded that the observed intermittency signal is mainly caused by Bose-Einstein interference. Furthermore, no energy (W) dependence of F2(Q2) is observed within the W range of the E665 experiment. Finally, the third-order correlation integrals K3(Q2) are found to be significantly different from zero which implies the presence of genuine three-particle correlations in muon-nucleon interactions.

Abstract: The production of K 0 s, Λs and Λ s has been studied in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment with almost complete coverage of all kinematic regions. A study is made of the dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic centre of mass energy, W , and of the Feynman x distributions. It is found that K 0 and Λ production is mostly central and increases strongly with W , whereas Λ production comes mainly from the remnant target system and is only weakly W dependent.

Abstract: In this paper the spectrometer constructed by the E665 Collaboration is described. The spectrometer was built during the period 1982–87 and the first data were taken during the 1987–88 Fixed Target run of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) Tevatron. This is the first of a series of runs in which a comprehensive program of high energy muon scattering experiments will be performed.

Abstract: The study of central collisions of heavy nuclei at CERN SPS energies by NA49 provided evidence for the onset of deconfinement around 30A GeV. Theoretical considerations predict a critical point of strongly interacting matter accessible in the SPS energy range. A search for the expected fluctuations has not yet found convincing signals. The strategy and plans for the continuation of this program at the SPS by NA61 with lighter nuclei is discussed.

Abstract: Source imaging methodology is used to provide a three-dimensional two-pion source function for mid-rapidity pion pairs with p T 70 MeV / c in central (0–7%) Pb + Pb collisions at s NN = 17.3 GeV . Prominent non-Gaussian tails are observed in the pion pair transverse momentum (outward) and in the beam (longitudinal) directions. Model calculations reproduce them with the assumption of Bjorken longitudinal boost invariance and transverse flow blast-wave dynamics; they also yield a proper time for breakup and emission duration for the pion source.

Abstract: We study the energy dependense of the transverse momentum (PT) spectra for charged pions, protons and anti-protons for An + An collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV. Data are presented at mid-rapidity (broken vertical bar y broken vertical bar 7 GeV/c) the modification is similar for both energies. The p/pi(+) and (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios for central collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 GeV peak at PT similar or equal to 2 GeV/c. In the PT range where recombination is expected to dominate, the p/pi(+) ratios at 62.4 GeV are larger than at 200 GeV, while the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios are smaller. For PT > 2 GeV/c, the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios at the two beam energies are independent of P-T and centrality indicating that the dependence of the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratio on P-T does not change between 62.4 and 200 GeV. Abstract: We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth $(\eta,\phi)$ bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse momentum $ $ fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain $p_t$ autocorrelations on differences $(\eta_\Delta,\phi_\Delta)$ interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on ($\eta,\phi$). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary strongly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au-Au collisions relative to peripheral or p-p collisions. \\

Abstract: We present the first measurements of charge-dependent correlations on angular difference variables η 1 − η 2 (pseudorapidity) and ϕ 1 − ϕ 2 (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 ⩽ p t ⩽ 2 GeV / c and | η | ⩽ 1.3 from Au–Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV . We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings along the beam direction to an at least two-dimensional hadronization geometry along the beam and azimuth directions of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Abstract: Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of pi(+/-), K+/-, and p((p) over bar) from 200 GeV p + p and d + Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R-dAu) between protons (p + (p) over bar) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2 < p(T) < 3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p + (p) over bar)/h in minimum-bias d + Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au + Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Abstract: We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au + Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕ production in central Au + Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions ( 〈 N bin 〉 ) . The systematics of 〈 p t 〉 versus centrality and the constant ϕ / K − ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ production.

Abstract: An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Abstract: Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

Abstract: Bose-Einstein correlations of charged kaons were measured near mid-rapidity in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A$\cdot$GeV by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Source radii were extracted using the Yano-Koonin-Podgoretsky and Bertsch-Pratt parameterizations. The results are compared to published pion data. The measured $m_\perp$ dependence for kaons and pions is consistent with collective transverse expansion of the source and a freeze-out time of about 9.5 $fm$.

Abstract: Rapidity distributions for $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV and for ${\rm K}_{s}^{0}$ mesons at 158 A$\cdot$GeV are presented. The lambda multiplicities are studied as a function of collision energy together with AGS and RHIC measurements and compared to model predictions. A different energy dependence of the $\Lambda/\pi$ and $\bar{\Lambda}/\pi$ is observed. The $\bar{\Lambda}/\Lambda$ ratio shows a steep increase with collision energy. Evidence for a $\bar{\Lambda}/\bar{\rm p}$ ratio greater than 1 is found at 40 A$\cdot$GeV.

Abstract: Two cylindrical forward TPC detectors are described which were constructed to extend the phase space coverage of the STAR experiment to the region 2.5 < |�| < 4.0. For optimal use of the available space and in order to cope with the high track density of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC, a novel design was developed using radial drift in a low diffusion gas. From prototype measurements a 2-track resolution of 1 - 2 mm is expected.

Abstract: Results of the production of Xi and Xi-bar hyperons in central Pb+Pb interactions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon are presented. This analysis utilises a global reconstruction procedure, which allows a measurement of 4pi integrated yields to be made for the first time. Inverse slope paramters, which are determined from an exponential fit to the transverse mass spectra, are shown. Central rapidity densities are found to be 1.49 +- 0.08 and 0.33 +- 0.04 per event per unit of rapidity for Xi and Xi-bar respectively. Yields integrated to full phase space are 4.12 +- 0.02 and 0.77 +- 0.04 for Xi and Xi-bar. The ratio of Xi-bar/Xi at mid-rapidity is 0.22 +- 0.03.

Abstract: The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Abstract: A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows one to measure the moments of the multiplicity distributions of protons ($p$), kaons ($K$), pions ($\ensuremath{\pi}$), and electrons ($e$) in case of incomplete particle identification. Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{dyn}}[A,B]$ was measured, with $A$ and $B$ denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{dyn}}$. However, ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{dyn}}$[$K$,$p$] and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{dyn}}$[$K$,$\ensuremath{\pi}$] were found to depend on the phase-space coverage. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au + Au collisions.

Abstract: Results on two-particle correlations, deuteron production, event anisotropy and event-by-event fluctuations of 〈 p T 〉 and K/π were obtained by the NA49 experiment in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A·GeV beam energy. The interpretation of the measurements is discussed in light of the search for deconfinement.

Abstract: Yields and phase space distributions of φ -mesons emitted from p+p (minimum bias trigger), p+Pb (at various centralities) and central Pb+Pb collisions are reported ( E beam =158 A GeV). The decay φ →K + K − was used for identification. The φ / π ratio is found to increase by a factor of 3.0±0.7 from inelastic p+p to central Pb+Pb. Significant enhancement in this ratio is also observed in subclasses of p+p events (characterized by high charged-particle multiplicity) as well as in the forward hemisphere of central p+Pb collisions. In Pb+Pb no shift or significant broadening of the φ -peak is seen.

Abstract: Experimental results on deuteron emission from central Pb+Pb collisions ( E beam =158A GeV, fixed target), obtained by NA49 at the CERN SPS accelerator, are presented. The transverse mass m t distribution was measured near mid-rapidity (2.0 y m t − m 0 c 2 (0 p t c ) for the 4% most central collisions. An exponential fit gives an inverse slope T d =(450±30) MeV and a yield dN d / dy =0.34±0.03. The coalescence factor B 2 ( m t = m 0 )=(3.5±1.0)·10 −4 GeV 2 and its m t -dependence are determined and discussed in terms of a model that includes the collective expansion of the source created in a collision. The derived Gaussian size parameter R G of the emission volume is consistent with earlier HBT results on the source of pion emission.

Abstract: The STAR Time Projection Chamber was successfully operated during the first RHIC run in 2000. Most of the STAR contributions reported in these proceedings are based on the analysis of data from the TPC. In this article, we show that the performance achieved by the TPC, in terms of track reconstruction, position resolution, and particle identification are well suited for measuring precise and reliable physics observables.

Abstract: We report measurements of Xi and Xi-bar hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0.12 for Xi, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Xi-bar, leading to the ratio of Xi-bar/Xi = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of Xi particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to Xi production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions.

Abstract: Data on φ -production obtained by the CERN NA49 experiment for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/u are presented. Compared with pp interactions the φ -yield shows substantial strangeness enhancement: the φ /π ratio is found to increase by a factor of 2.6 ± 0.6, which is approximately the square of the K/π enhancement.

Abstract: The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A · GeV at the CERN SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19% in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

Abstract: The directed and elliptic flow of protons and charged pions has been observed from the semi-central collisions of a 158 GeV/nucleon Pb beam with a Pb target. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow has been measured. The directed flow of the pions is opposite to that of the protons at high rapidity but both exhibit negative flow at low p t . The elliptic flow of both is fairly independent of rapidity but rises with p t .

28. Diffusion and drift studies of Ar-DME/CO2/CH4 gas mixtures for a radial TPC in the E > B field

Abstract: We have performed systematic studies of electron diffusion and drift in three gas mixtures: Ar(50%)-DME(50%), Ar(50%)CO 2 (50%), and Ar(90%)CH 4 (10%) inside the E > B field, with the aim to build a high-resolution radial Time-Projection-Chamber (TPC). Our TPC design is unconventional in that: (1) it drifts electron clusters in a radial electric field perpendicular to a magnetic field; (2) it employs microstrip gas chamber (MSGC) with pads for readout. To achieve the required spatial resolution and two-track resolution, we find that one must use a gas mixture based on a “cool” gas such as CO 2 or DME (dimethylether (CH 3 ) 2 O). Such a gas mixture has low diffusion coefficients and small Lorentz angle in the E > B field. Its transport parameters are less sensitive to the magnetic field. Our measurements are compared with two transport calculations. For the Ar(90%)CH 4 (10%) gas mixture, the calculations based upon the moments method agree well with our measurements, while the calculations using the Magboltz program largely over-predict our measurements for transverse diffusion and Lorentz angle. For the Ar(50%)-DME(50%) and Ar(50%)CO 2 (50%) gas mixtures, which have slow drift and low diffusion, our measurements are consistent with calculations based upon either the moments method or the Magboltz program.

Abstract: Preliminary inclusive spectra of negative hadrons, net protons and neutral strange particles are presented, measured by the NA49 experiment in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. Comparison of their yields with those from the lighter S+S system suggests that the yields scale approximately with the number of participating nucleons.

Abstract: We discuss preliminary data on stopping for central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon. The (net) proton rapidity density measured by the NA49 Time Projection Chambers, NA49 Time of Flight and the NA44 spectrometer is presented. Slightly higher stopping is observed relative to S + S at 200 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity density exhibits a plateau around mid-rapidity which is qualitatively different from results at the AGS and BEVALAC/SIS energies. The second part of the paper discusses the azimuthal correlation of the energy flow. Preliminary results reveal that the ‘fireball’ preserves the information of the collision geometry even at SPS energies.

Abstract: Antiproton production near midrapidity has been studied in central collisions of 32 S with sulphur, silver and gold nuclei at 200 GeV per nucleon. The measured transverse mass distributions can be described by an exponential with inverse slope parameters of about 200 MeV, similar to those obtained from Λ spectra. The rapidity density increases weakly with the target mass, ranging from 0.4 to 0.7. The ratio Λ p near midrapidity is approximately 1.4 on average, significantly larger than the corresponding ratio observed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions.

Abstract: Recent results on hadron production in central nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained by the experiment NA35 at the CERN SPS are reviewed. The first preliminary results on central Pb+Pb collisions obtained by the NA49 experiment, the successor of NA35, are also discussed. Their impact on our understanding of the properties of strongly interacting matter at different stages of the collision is underlined.

Abstract: The NA49 results on hadron production obtained in PbPb collisions at SPS energies from 20 to 158 A GeV are shown and discussed as evidence for the onset of deconfinement. The primary measures are the pion yield, the kaon-to-pion ratio and the slope parameter of transverse mass distributions. The possible indication of the QCD critical point signatures was investigated in the event-by-event fluctuations of various observables such as the mean transverse momentum, particle multiplicity and azimuthal angle distributions as well as in the particle ratio fluctuations. The energy dependence of these observables was measured in central PbPb collisions in the full SPS energy range while for analysis of the system size dependence data from pp, CC, SiSi, and PbPb collisions at the top SPS energy were used.

Abstract: For large TPCs in future experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) and at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, Brookhaven) it is of great interest to optimize the gas characteristics and the readout geometry for the planned application. For this a large number of argon, neon and helium based gases with CH4, C2H6 and CO2 admixtures as quenchers were studied. The drift velocity and the transverse and longitudinal electron diffusion were measured for drift field strengths between 70 and 200 V/cm. Improvements of the readout chambers were tested. Effects on the spatial and the two-track resolution are discussed.

Abstract: The first identified particle spectra obtained with a proximity focusing RICH detector using an optical readout in the high particle density environment of heavy ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies are presented. Abstract: Production of the K*(892)0 and K*(892)⁰ resonances was studied via their K⁺π⁻ and K⁻π⁺ decay modes in central Pb+Pb, Si+Si, C+C, and inelastic p+p collisions at 158A GeV(√(sNN)=17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum and rapidity distributions were measured and total yields were estimated. The yield of K* exceeds that of K* by about a factor of two in nucleus-nucleus reactions. The total yield ratios ⟨K*⟩/⟨K+⟩ and ⟨K*⟩/⟨K-⟩ are strongly suppressed in central Pb+Pb compared to p+p, C+C, and Si+Si collisions, in agreement with the expected attenuation of these short-lived resonance states in the hadronic phase of the expanding fireball. The UrQMD model, although incorporating such a scenario, does not provide a quantitative description of the experimental results. The statistical hadron gas model assuming the same freeze-out parameters for stable hadrons and resonances overestimates the ⟨K*⟩/⟨K⟩ ratios in central Pb+Pb collisions by about a factor of 2.5.

Abstract: Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities: strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the (K++K-)/(p+p ) and K+/p ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb+Pb collisions at five CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies between √sNN=6.3 and √sNN=17.3 GeV. Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in σdyn, a measure of nonstatistical fluctuations, around √sNN=8 GeV. Below this energy, σdyn is positive, indicating higher fluctuation compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies, σdyn is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons and protons. The results are compared to hadronic transport model calculations which fail to reproduce the energy dependence.

Abstract: The yields of (anti)protons were measured by the NA49 Collaboration in centrality-selected Pb + Pb collisions at 40A and 158A GeV. Particle identification was obtained in the laboratory momentum range from 5 to 63 GeV/c by measuring the energy loss dE/dx in the time projection chamber detector gas. The corresponding rapidity coverage extends 1.6 units from midrapidity into the forward hemisphere. Transverse-mass spectra, the rapidity dependences of the average transverse mass, and rapidity density distributions were studied as a function of collision centrality. The values of the average transverse mass as well as the midrapidity yields of protons normalized to the number of wounded nucleons show only modest centrality dependences. In contrast, the shape of the rapidity distribution changes significantly with collision centrality, especially at 40A GeV. The experimental results are compared to calculations of the hadron-string dynamics and the ultrarelativistic quantum-molecular-dynamics transport models.

Abstract: Pion production in nuclear collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power laws in the behavior of correlations that are compatible with critical QCD. We analyzed interactions of nuclei of different sizes (p + p, C + C, Si + Si, Pb + Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π +π− pairs with an invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ meson has no well-defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb + Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si + Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD.

Abstract: Enhanced strange particle production, nonstatistical multiplicity fluctuations and two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations were measured in O, S-nucleus reactions at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon. The results indicate significant collective effects in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Abstract: Pion interferometry is the unique tool to study the space-time evolution of the systems created in the ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Five different data sets have been analyzed in terms of cylindrical coordinates, and all yield consistent results. We conclude that the system expands longitudinally, the decoupling proper time is ∼5 fm/c, the duration of particle emission is very short

Abstract: The NA35 collaboration has constructed a time projection chamber (TPC) with a sensitive volume of 240 × 125 × 112 cm 3 . The chamber is operated without a magnetic field and uses pad readout only. During the 1990 run with the 32 S beam at CERN 500k events were recorded. A description of the detector is given and the performance concerning the position measuring accuracy, two-track resolution, and particle indentification by ionisation measurement is discussed.

Abstract: Results on Λ, Λ , and Ξ- production in centrality selected Pb+Pb reactions at 40A and 158A GeV and in near-central C+C and Si+Si reactions at 158A GeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron string dynamics) and to the core-corona approach are performed. Although Λ and Λ production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Ξ- measurements. However, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Λ and Ξ-, whereas it agrees less well with the Λ data.

Abstract: We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/{pi} and (p+p)/{pi} multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, {radical}(s{sub NN}), between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/{pi} ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p)/{pi} ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/{pi} ratio fluctuations.
