1. First result for the neutrino magnetic moment from measurements with the GEMMA spectrometer

Abstract

The first result of the neutrino magnetic moment measurement at the Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) with the GEMMA spectrometer is presented. An antineutrino-electron scattering is investigated. A high-purity germanium detector of 1.5 kg placed 13.9 m away from the 3 GW reactor core is used in the spectrometer. The antineutrino flux is $2.73\times 10^{13} \nu_e / cm^2 / s$. The differential method is used to extract the $\nu$-e electromagnetic scattering events. The scattered electron spectra taken in 6200 and 2064 hours for the reactor ON and OFF periods are compared. The upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment $\mu_\nu < 5.8\times 10^{-11}$ Bohr magnetons at 90{%} CL is derived from the data processing.

Abstract

The low-background multi-HPGe spectrometer TGV II installed in the Modane Underground Laboratory (France) is described in detail and the results of the background measurements are reported. The spectrometer is focused on the double beta decay measurements with two isotopes—106Cd ( 2 ν EC / EC mode) and 48Ca ( β β mode). A basic summary of the physics of β β decay (especially EC/EC mode) is also given.

Abstract

A search for double electron capture of 106Cd was performed at the Modane Underground Laboratory (4800 m w.e.) using a low-background and high-sensitivity multidetector spectrometer TGV-2 (Telescope Germanium Vertical). New limits on β+/EC, EC/EC decays of 106Cd were obtained from preliminary calculations of experimental data accumulated for 4800 h of measurement of 10 g of 106Cd with enrichment of 75%. They are \(T_{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}^{2\nu \beta ^ + EC} \) > 9.1 × 1018 yr, \(T_{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}^{2\nu {{EC} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{EC} {EC}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {EC}}} \) > 1.9 × 1019 yr for transitions to the first 2+, 511.9 keV excited state of 106Pd, and \(T_{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}^{2\nu \beta ^ + EC} \) > 1.3 × 1019 yr, \(T_{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}^{2\nu {{EC} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{EC} {EC}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {EC}}} \) > 6.2 × 1019 yr for transitions to the ground 0+ state of 106Pd. Abstract

Lead tungstate (PbWO4) crystal scintillators are discussed as an active shield and light guides in Cd-116 double-beta decay experiment with Cadmium tungstate (CdWO4) scintillators. Scintillation properties and radioactive contamination of PbWO4 scintillators were investigated. Energy resolution of CdWO4 detector, coupled to PbWO4 light guide, was tested. Efficiency of PbWO4-based active shield to suppress background from the internal contamination of PbWO4 crystals, as well as possible contribution from radioactivity of copper shield and phototubes were calculated. Using of lead tungstate crystal scintillators as high-efficiency 4 pi active shield could allow to build sensitive 2 beta experiment (T-1/2(0 nu 2 beta) similar to 10(26) yr) to search for 0 nu 2 beta decay of Cd-116 with (CdWO4)-Cd-116 crystal scintillators. Abstract

The positrons and coincident gamma-rays following the pure Fermi 0(+) --> 0(+) branch of beta(+)-decay in 140 were measured. The Doppler shift of the gamma-quantum observed is sensitive to the beta-neutrino correlation coefficient, which is unity (alpha = 1) in the absence of scalar coupling. The interatomic interaction of recoiling daughters was noticed, which has prevented to obtain an improved result for scalar coupling despite of the excellent statistical accuracy of the measurement. At the same time, it was shown that the method described can be used as a very sensitive and flexible tool to probe the interatomic interactions in matter at the hundred eV energy level. Perspectives in this direction as well as the future angular-correlation experiments aimed to search for scalar coupling in beta-decay are discussed.

Abstract

A 48CaCO3 powder sample containing 20.18 g of 48Ca was measured for 797 h with a 400 cm3 low-background HPGe detector. New limits on decays of 48Ca were obtained. For single beta transitions to 48Sc the limits are equal to 0.71×1020 y, 1.1×1020 y, and 0.82×1020 y for transitions to the ground state, excited 5+ and 4+ states, respectively. The new limits on double beta decay to excited states of 48Ti are equal to 0.47×1020 y, 1.1×1020 y, and 0.90×1020 y for transitions to the first 2+, second 2+ and first 0+ excited states, respectively. All limits are given at the 90% CL.

Abstract

A precision measurement of the 277 keV γ ray produced by capturing muons in gaseous oxygen was performed using high-resolution HPGe detectors. The Doppler-broadened shape of this line is sensitive to the possible admixture into muon capture of genuine scalar interaction. This experiment complements, in the muon sector, in principle, similar ones undertaken recently in nuclear β decay. Using a procedure discussed in earlier papers, a fit to the experimental line-shape allowed us to obtain for the recoil–gamma correlation coefficient the value of a 1 2 =0.096±0.041 (95% CL). The available evaluations of the contributing nuclear matrix elements, performed in the impulse approximation in the absence of scalar interaction, produce correlation coefficients in disagreement with our result. These evaluations are independent of the induced pseudoscalar coupling and so of the validity of the PCAC hypothesis, but their reliability and model dependence remain to be investigated.

Abstract

Most currently, viable double beta decay experiments require highly enriched isotopic sources. These sources must be extraordinarily free of radioactive contamination. The double beta decay experiment NEMO 3 will study 100Mo, for which physical and chemical purification techniques have been investigated. The success of the chemical purification process is discussed in the context of ultra-low background, high-purity germanium spectrometer measurements.

Abstract

To be sensitive to an effective Majorana neutrino mass, 〈 m ν 〉, on the order of 0.1 eV, the NEMO 3 double beta (ββ(0ν)) decay experiment requires precise knowledge and control of the backgrounds. The effect of neutrons and γ-rays from the Frejus underground laboratory (LSM, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane) has been studied during 10 700 h of data collection. The data were taken with a NEMO 2 prototype detector using different shield configurations. Monte Carlo calculations with GEANT/MICAP code and a new library of γ-rays from neutron captures are presented. The implied consequences for the NEMO 3 detector which is under construction are discussed. The neutrinoless double beta decay background induced by neutrons and γ-rays within the LSM will be suppressed to the very suitable level of 0.1 event in a live time of five years given the appropriate shield and magnetic field.

Abstract

The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype for the NEMO-3 detector and to study different modes of double beta decay. Measurements with 100 Mo, 116 Cd, 82 Se and 96 Zr were carried out. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on double beta decays for new Majoron emission modes and limits on effective neutrino–Majoron coupling constants.

11. The spin-neutrino correlation revisited in 28Si muon capture: a new determination of the induced pseudoscalar coupling gP/gA

Abstract

We describe an improved follow-up of our previous spin-neutrino correlation experiment, where the 1229 and 2171 keV gamma-rays emitted after the 28 Si( μ , ν ) 28 Al(1 + , 2202 keV) reaction were observed by high-resolution HPGe detectors at different angles with respect to the muon spin. In the experiment described here, a magnetic field was used both to select events according to the spin-gamma angle and to measure the residual muon polarization by the muSR method. We further increase the precision of our result making use of new experimental and theoretical information. We obtain for the parameter x ≡ M (2)/ M (−1) the value of x =0.239±0.029, which can be compared to our previous result (Brudanin et al., Nucl. Phys. A 587 (1995) 577) x =0.254±0.034 and to the value x =0.315±0.080 obtained recently at TRIUMF with a different technique. The coupling-constant ratio g P / g A was deduced from the mean value x =0.247±0.027. Using renormalized transition operators calculated recently, we obtained for g P / g A the solution range of −1.0 to +1.3 to be compared to the value of 7 predicted by PCAC for the free nucleon. This result confirms the strong quenching of g P / g A reported earlier.

Abstract

In the double beta decay (ββ) experiment NEMO-2, the 214 Bi radioactivity has been measured as background for the ββ processes. The analysis of the 214 Bi contamination has been performed via the signature of 214 Po alpha decay. This method has been applied to data taken with enriched 100 Mo and 116 Cd sources. At the level of NEMO-2's sensitivity, in a 1.0 mole yr study of enriched material, the contamination of the sources can be measured in the range of 2.0 mBq kg −1 . The effects of deposited contamination by 222 Rn are also discussed and estimated at the level of 0.3 mBq per square meter of source foil. Backgrounds for neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ0v) are deduced from these measurements and the consequences for the higher sensitivity ββ experiment NEMO-3 are drawn.

Abstract

The presence of a scalar interaction in nuclear beta-decay was studied by measuring the beta-neutrino correlation coefficient alpha in the superallowed pure Fermi beta-transition Ne-18(O+) --> F-18(O+, 1040 keV) (T-1/2 = 1.67 s). The resulting value, i.e. alpha = + 1.06 +/- 0.19 (error quoted at 2 sigma), corresponds to the limit root/C-s/(2) + C-s'(2) less than or equal to 0.29C-v (95%) CL for the scalar coupling constant. Abstract

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. Abstract

The half-life for double-{beta} decay of {sup 150}Nd has been measured by the NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory. Using 924.7 days of data recorded with 36.55 g of {sup 150}Nd, we measured the half-life for 2{nu}{beta}{beta} decay to be T{sub 1/2}{sup 2{nu}}=(9.11{sub -0.22}{sup +0.25}(stat.){+-}0.63(syst.))x10{sup 18} yr. The observed limit on the half-life for neutrinoless double-{beta} decay is found to be T{sub 1/2}{sup 0{nu}}>1.8x10{sup 22} yr at 90% confidence level. This translates into a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of

Abstract

In the double beta decay experiment NEMO 3 a precise knowledge of the background in the signal region is of outstanding importance. This article presents the methods used in NEMO 3 to evaluate the backgrounds resulting from most if not all possible origins. It also illustrates the power of the combined tracking-calorimetry technique used in the experiment., The authors would like to thank the Modane Underground Laboratory staff for their technical assistance in running the experiment. Abstract

Using 9.4 g of Zr-96 and 1221 days of data from the NEMO-3 detector corresponding to 0.031 kg yr, the obtained 2vbb decay half-life measurement is [2.35 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10^19 yr. Different characteristics of the final state electrons have been studied, such as the energy sum, individual electron energy, and angular distribution. The 2v nuclear matrix element is extracted using the measured 2vbb half-life and is 0.049 +/- 0.002. Constraints on 0vbb decay have also been set., Published in Nucl.Phys.A (10 pages, 10 figures)

Abstract

The result of the 3-year neutrino magnetic moment measurement at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant with the GEMMA spectrometer is presented. Antineutrino-electron scattering is investigated. A high-purity germanium detector of 1.5 kg placed at a distance of 13.9 m from the 3 GW(th) reactor core is used in the spectrometer. The antineutrino flux is 2.7E13 1/scm/s. The differential method is used to extract (nu-e) electromagnetic scattering events. The scattered electron spectra taken in 5184+6798 and 1853+1021 hours for the reactor ON and OFF periods are compared. The upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment < 3.2E-11 Bohr magneton at 90% CL is derived from the data processing., 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1 state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x 10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found. The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y (at 90% C.L.). The search for the double beta decay to the 2^+_1 excited state has allowed the determination of limits on the half-life for the two neutrino mode T^(2nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.1 x 10^21 y (at 90% C.L.) and for the neutrinoless mode T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.6 x 10^23 y (at 90% C.L.)., 23 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Nucl. Abstract

The NEMO-3 tracking detector is located in the Fr��jus Underground Laboratory. It was designed to study double beta decay in a number of different isotopes. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on the double beta decay process for the isotopes $^{100}$Mo and $^{82}$Se for different Majoron emission modes and limits on the effective neutrino-Majoron coupling constants. In particular, new limits on "ordinary" Majoron (spectral index 1) decay of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2} > 2.7\cdot10^{22}$ y) and $^{82}$Se ($T_{1/2} > 1.5\cdot10^{22}$ y) have been obtained. Corresponding bounds on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant are $ < (0.4-1.9) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $< (0.66-1.7) \cdot 10^{-4}$., 23 pages includind 4 figures, to be published in Nuclear Physics A

Abstract

This Letter describes a collaborative TGV (Telescope Germanium Vertical) study of the double beta decay of 48Ca with a low-background and high sensitivity Ge multi-detector spectrometer. The results of T1/22νββ=(4.2+3.3−1.3)×1019 years and T1/20νββ>1.5×1021 years (90% CL) for double beta decay of 48Ca were found after processing experimental data obtained after 8700 hours of measuring time, using approximately 1 gramme of 48Ca. The features of a TGV-2 experiment are also presented.

Abstract

After 10357 h of running the NEMO-2 tracking detector with an isotopically enriched zirconium source (0.084 mol yr of 96Zr), a ββ2ν decay half-life of T1/2=(2.1+0.8(stat)−0.4(stat)±0.2(syst))·1019 y was measured. Limits with a 90% C.L. on the 96Zr half-lives of 1.0·1021 y for ββ0ν decay to the ground state, 3.9·1020 y to the 2+ excited state and 3.5·1020 y for ββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were obtained. The data also provide direct limits at the 90% C.L. for the 94Zr half-lives. These limits are 1.1·1017 y for ββ2ν decay to the ground state, 1.9·1019 y for ββ0ν decay to the ground state and 2.3·1018 y for ββ0νχ0 decay to ground state.

Abstract

We analyze constraints on the parameters of the R-parity violating supersymmetry which can be extracted from non-observation of the neutrinoless nuclear double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) at a given half-life lower bound. Our analysis covers a large class of phenomenologically viable R-parity violating SUSY models. We introduce special characteristics: the SUSY sensitivity of a $\beta\beta$ decaying isotope and the SUSY reach of a $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiment. The former provides a physical criterion for a selection of the most promising isotopes for SUSY searches and the latter gives a measure of success for a $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiment in exploring the R-parity violating SUSY parameter space. On this basis we discuss prospects for exploration of supersymmetry in various $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 5 Postscript figures. Abstract

A high sensitivity double beta spectrometer TGV (Telescope Germanium Vertical) has been developed. It is based on 16 HPGe detectors of volume 1200 × 6 mm3 each in the same cryostat. The TGV spectrometer was proposed for the study of ultrarare nuclear processes (e.g. 2νββ, 0νββ, 2νEC/EC). Details of the TGV spectrometer construction are described, the principles of background suppression, the results of Monte Carlo simulations and the results of test background measurements (in Dubna and Modane underground laboratory) are provided.

Abstract

To investigate double beta decay processes, the NEMO collaboration began a long-range research and development program in 1988. The NEMO 2 detector, which is now running in the Frejus underground laboratory (L.S.M. Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane), is the second prototype. It consists of a 1 m2 source foil sandwiched between Geiger cell drift chambers for electron tracking and two plastic scintillator walls for energy and time-of-flight measurements. The technical description of the detector is followed by the study of the various sources of background.

Abstract

The observation with high-resolution Ge detectors of the 1229 and 2171 keV gamma-rays emitted after the 28Si(μ, ν)28Al(1+, 2202 keV) reaction allowed us to determine the nuclear-amplitude ratio x ≡ M(2) M(−1) characteristic of this muon-capture reaction. Using the nuclear-structure dependent evaluation of various correction terms (model of Ciechanowicz), our result x = +0.254±0.034 provides for the induced pseudoscalar coupling gp the ratio g p g a (0.848m μ 2 ) = 3.4 ± 1.0 , to be compared to the PCAC prediction of g p g a = 7 . The model dependence of this apparent quenching remains to be assessed.

Abstract

High-precision direct gamma -ray and K X- gamma coincidence measurements have been performed in the electron-capture decay of 158Tb. A revised level scheme of 158Gd is proposed, with high-precision energies and intensities. The Q value determined for this decay using K capture to the high-lying levels in 158Gd shows that a K capture to the 1187 keV level is excluded. In addition the authors' K X- gamma coincidence measurements do not show any such event with an upper limit of 2*10-5 (90% CL).

Abstract

High-precision K x- gamma coincidence measurements have been performed in the electron-capture decay of 158Tb in order to measure the K-capture probability to the high-lying levels in 158Gd. Results show that the Q-value of this decay does not allow an ultra-low-energy capture decay to the 1187 keV level as predicted previously. In addition, the K x- gamma coincidence measurements do not show any such event within the statistical errors.

Abstract

The Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) was tested with the NEMO-2 detector. Limits at the 90% C.L. on the violation of PEP for p-shell nucleons in 12C were obtained. Specifically, transitions to the fully occupied 1s1/2-shell yielded a limit of 4.2 · 1024 y for the process with emission of a γ-quantum. Similarly limits of 3.1 · 1024 y for β− and 2.6 · 1024 y for β+ Pauli-forbidden transitions of 12C →12N12B) are reported here.

Abstract

The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype of the NEMO-3 detector to study neutrinoless (Oν) and two neutrino (2ν) double-beta decay (ββ) physics. After 10357 h of running with an isotopically enriched selenium source (2.17 mol yr of 82Se) a ββ2ν decay half-life of T 1 2 = (0.83 ± 0.10( stat ) ± 0.07 ( syst )) × 10 20 yr was measured. Limits with a 90% C.L. on the 82Se half-lives of 9.5 × 1021 yr for ββ0ν decay to the ground state, 2.8 × 1021 yr to the (2+) excited state and 2.4 × 1021 yr for ββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were also obtained.
