1. Atomistic modeling of out-of-pile xenon diffusion by vacancy clusters in UO2

Abstract

Diffusion of Xe atoms in UO2 fuel is important for nuclear fuel performance, and is enabled by interaction with U and O vacancies. Previous work using atomistic calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and empirical potentials (EP) focused on the role of small vacancy clusters ( Xe U 2 O y , y = 0, 1, 2) for Xe transport, but the model predictions failed to reproduce the experimental observations by consistently underestimating Xe diffusivity. In this work, where we focused on out-of-pile conditions (i.e. in the absence of irradiation), we have explored two of the uncertainties associated with the model: the DFT methodology and the types of clusters considered. We found that using the energy barriers obtained with GGA + U DFT allows to reconcile simulation results and experimental observations in the intrinsic regime (i.e. out-of-pile conditions). The XeUO cluster is the preferred configuration at high temperature, while the mobile Xe U 2 O cluster takes over below 1720 K. The latter cluster is also the main contributor to Xe diffusion and good agreement is obtained with current models empirically fitted to experiments for diffusion at high temperature. A simple expression that captures most of Xe diffusivity is proposed, relying on XeUO and Xe U 2 O clusters only. We also determined the out-of-pile concentration and diffusivity of extended clusters Xe U x O y , 3 ≤ x ≤ 9 , and determined that these do not contribute significantly to the overall diffusivity under intrinsic conditions. However, we speculate that the Xe U 4 O 3 and Xe U 8 O 9 clusters, which have relatively low migration barrier, may play a role under irradiation conditions, because the radiation-induced enhanced vacancy concentration would rapidly increase the fraction of large Xe-vacancy clusters.

Abstract

U3Si2 is an advanced fuel candidate due to its relatively high fissile density and attractive thermal properties. Compared to standard UO2 fuel, there are significant data gaps for the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of U3Si2. Point defect concentrations and mobilities under irradiation govern a number of important fuel performance properties, such as creep and fission gas release. In this work, we utilized density functional theory (DFT) data to inform a cluster dynamics framework to predict point defect concentrations in U3Si2 under irradiation. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to examine the contribution of atomic mixing during ballistic cascades to diffusion, as well as the diffusivity of U and Si at grain boundaries. These atomic scale models for diffusivity were then used to inform a creep model based on bulk (Nabarro-Herring) and grain boundary (Coble) diffusional creep, and climb-limited dislocation creep. The model compares well against available experimental data and has been implemented in the BISON fuel performance code. A demonstration case using simple power profiles has been carried out, showing that negligible creep occurs due to the low temperatures experienced by U3Si2 in-reactor, a consequence of its high thermal conductivity.

Abstract

In this work, flash sintering was demonstrated on stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric uranium dioxide pellets at temperatures ranging from room temperature ( 26 ° C ) up to 600 ° C . The onset conditions for flash sintering were determined for three stoichiometries (UO2.00, UO2.08, and UO2.16) and analyzed against an established thermal runaway model. The presence of excess oxygen was found to enhance the flash sintering onset behavior of uranium dioxide, lowering the field required to flash and shortening the time required for a flash to occur. The results from this study highlight the effect of stoichiometry on the flash sintering behavior of uranium dioxide and will serve as the foundation for future studies on this material.

Abstract

Below 1000 K it is thought that fission gas diffusion in nuclear fuel during irradiation occurs through atomic mixing due to radiation damage. Here we present a molecular dynamics (MD) study of Xe, Kr, Th, U, Pu and O diffusion due to irradiation. It is concluded that the ballistic phase does not sufficiently account for the experimentally observed diffusion. Thermal spike simulations are used to confirm that electronic stopping remedies the discrepancy with experiment and the predicted diffusivities lie within the scatter of the experimental data. Our results predict that the diffusion coefficients are ordered such that D O * > D Kr * > D Xe * > D U * . For all species >98.5% of diffusivity is accounted for by electronic stopping. Fission gas diffusivity was not predicted to vary significantly between ThO2, UO2 and PuO2, indicating that this process would not change greatly for mixed oxide fuels.

The safe, reliable, and economic operation of the nation’s nuclear power reactor fleet has always been a top priority for the nuclear industry. Continual improvement of technology, including advanced materials and nuclear fuels, remains central to the industry’s success. Enhancing the accident tolerance of light water reactors (LWRs) became a topic of serious discussion following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, resulting tsunami, and subsequent damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex. The overall goal for the development of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) for LWRs is to identify alternative fuel system technologies to further enhance the safety, competitiveness, and economics of commercial nuclear power. Abstract

Accurately predicting changes in the thermal conductivity of light water reactor UO2 fuel throughout its lifetime in reactor is an essential part of fuel performance modeling. However, typical thermal conductivity models from the literature are empirical. In this work, we begin to develop a mechanistic thermal conductivity model by focusing on the impact of gaseous fission products, which is coupled to swelling and fission gas release. The impact of additional defects and fission products will be added in future work. The model is developed using a combination of atomistic and mesoscale simulation, as well as analytical models. The impact of dispersed fission gas atoms is quantified using molecular dynamics simulations corrected to account for phonon-spin scattering. The impact of intragranular bubbles is accounted for using an analytical model that considers phonon scattering. The impact of grain boundary bubbles is determined using a simple model with five thermal resistors that are parameterized by comparing to 3D mesoscale heat conduction results. When used in the BISON fuel performance code to model four reactor experiments, it produces reasonable predictions without having been fit to fuel thermocouple data.

Abstract

Diffusion of fission gas in UO2 nuclear fuel impacts several important performance metrics, such as fission gas release, swelling, and thermal conductivity. Current empirical models of fission gas release have significant uncertainty, some of which derives from the bulk diffusion rate and its dependence on, for example, fuel chemistry and irradiation. We have applied the previously-developed Free Energy Cluster Dynamics (FECD) methodology in the code Centipede to calculate xenon cluster concentrations in UO2 under intrinsic (high temperature) and irradiation-enhanced (intermediate temperature) conditions in order to develop a model of the xenon diffusion coefficient based on the atomic scale mechanisms responsible for transport. While the diffusion mechanism for xenon in UO2 is adequately described by the Xe + U2O vacancy cluster for intrinsic conditions, a similar process is not capable of capturing measured in-pile fission gas diffusivity at intermediate temperatures. Therefore, a different diffusion mechanism must dominate under this regime. Using calculated atomistic data, we have shown that irradiation-enhanced diffusion at intermediate temperatures occurs via the larger Xe + U4Oy vacancy clusters, which have lower migration barriers and increase in concentration by several orders of magnitude compared to intrinsic conditions. This mechanism is enabled by the increased uranium vacancy concentration under irradiation due to Frenkel pair production. In addition, the fast migration of uranium interstitials with two attached oxygen interstitials lowers the total uranium interstitial concentration through reactions with sinks. This allows the extended defects, such as Xe + U4Oy vacancy clusters, to maintain high concentrations by limiting annihilation with attached vacancies. Predictions using th-e Xe + U4Oy diffusion mechanism are in good agreement with experiment, albeit with some differences in the Arrhenius slope, which we believe may be related to either experimental or model parameter uncertainty. Finally, an analytical expression suitable for application in fuel performance simulations was derived to capture the predictions of the Centipede simulations.

Abstract

An approach to transform and accelerate nuclear fuel development and qualification is outlined. The approach exploits advanced modeling and simulation at the outset to inform constituent and system selection and to enable integral fuel performance analyses. Analyses using these tools identify and prioritize the most important fuel performance parameters and phenomena for subsequent targeted characterization with separate-effects tests. Separate-effects testing spans out-of-pile and in-pile tests and is meant to iterate with and inform engineering-scale integral fuel performance analyses throughout the development process. Exercising this cycle in an agile fashion will increase confidence in the integral fuel performance predictions while reducing uncertainties. This process sets the stage for executing a much more limited set of well-defined integral irradiation tests designed to validate engineering-scale fuel performance codes and to confirm the performance and safety of the fuel system under prototypic conditions. This approach will reduce the time for development and qualification of a new fuel system, and it will also reduce associated costs.

Abstract

As fission fragments pass through UO2 nuclear fuel, a considerable concentration of Frenkel pair defects (i.e. vacancies and interstitials) are created. The steady-state concentration of these defects leads to enhanced uranium self-diffusion, one of several fundamental kinetic parameters that control key engineering properties such as creep and fission gas swelling in UO2 nuclear fuel. A cluster dynamics method to track point defects and defect clusters has been implemented in the MARMOT phase-field code in order to predict as-measured out-of-pile and irradiation enhanced thermal diffusivity. The calculated uranium self-diffusion coefficient compares well with non-irradiated fuel measurements, and shows similar trends to those observed in irradiated fuel, which is a good result given the complexities introduced by non-stoichiometric compositions.

Abstract

In light water reactor fuel, gaseous fission products segregate to grain boundaries, resulting in the nucleation and growth of large intergranular fission gas bubbles. The segregation rate is controlled by diffusion of fission gas atoms through the grains and interaction with the boundaries. Based on the mechanisms established from earlier density functional theory (DFT) and empirical potential calculations, diffusion models for xenon (Xe), uranium (U) vacancies and U interstitials in UO2 have been derived for both intrinsic (no irradiation) and irradiation conditions. Segregation of Xe to grain boundaries is described by combining the bulk diffusion model with a model for the interaction between Xe atoms and three different grain boundaries in UO2 ( Σ 5 tilt, Σ 5 twist and a high angle random boundary), as derived from atomistic calculations. The present model does not attempt to capture nucleation or growth of fission gas bubbles at the grain boundaries. The point defect and Xe diffusion and segregation models are implemented in the MARMOT phase field code, which is used to calculate effective Xe and U diffusivities as well as to simulate Xe redistribution for a few simple microstructures.

Abstract

Recently, a combined experimental–theoretical approach to assess the effect of daughter product formation on the stability of crystalline compounds comprised of radioisotopes has been developed. This methodology was motivated by the potential impact on crystalline nuclear waste form stability of a significant fraction of the constituent atoms undergoing transmutation. What is particularly novel about this approach is the experimental use of very short-lived isotopes to accelerate the chemical evolution that occurs during decay. In this paper, we present results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations that have been performed in support of corresponding experiments on the 109 Cd x 109 Ag 1 - x S material system. 109Cd has been selected in order to simulate the decay of important “short-lived” fission products 137Cs or 90Sr (which decay via β - to 137Ba and 90Zr respectively with ≈ 30-year half-lives). By comparison, 109Cd decays by electron capture with a half-life of 109 days to 109Ag. DFT results predict the formation of heretofore unobserved Cd x Ag 1 - x S structures, which support corresponding experiments and ultimately may have implications for waste form stability.

The diffusivity of the solid fission products (FP) Zr (Zr4+), Ru (Ru4+, Ru3+), Ce (Ce4+), Y (Y3+), La (La3+), Sr (Sr2+) and Ba (Ba2+) by a vacancy mechanism has been calculated, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and empirical potential (EP) calculations. The activation energies for the solid fission products are compared to the activation energy for Xe fission gas atoms calculated previously. Apart from Ru, the solid fission products all exhibit higher activation energy than Xe. For all solid FPs except Y3+, the migration of the FP has lower barrier than the migration of a neighboring U atom, making the latter the rate limiting step for direct migration. An indirect mechanism, consisting of two successive migrations around the FP, is also investigated. The calculated diffusivities show that most solid fission products diffuse with rates similar to U self-diffusion. However, Ru, Ba and Sr exhibit faster diffusion than the other solid FPs, with Ru3+ and Ru4+ diffusing even faster than Xe for T

Abstract

The free energy of formation of bonaccordite (Ni2FeBO5) as a function of temperature has been calculated using a technique that combines first principles calculations with experimental free energies of formation of aqueous species. The results suggest that bonaccordite formation from aqueous metal ions (Ni2+ andFe3+) and boric acid is thermodynamically favorable at elevated temperature and pH that have been predicted to exist at the CRUD-clad interface in deposits thicker than 60 μm.

Abstract

Based on density functional theory (DFT) and empirical potential calculations, the diffusivity of fission gas atoms (Xe) in UO2 nuclear fuel has been calculated for a range of non-stoichiometry (i.e. UO 2 ± x ), under both out-of-pile (no irradiation) and in-pile (irradiation) conditions. This was achieved by first deriving expressions for the activation energy that account for the type of trap site that the fission gas atoms occupy, which includes the corresponding type of mobile cluster, the charge state of these defects and the chemistry acting as boundary condition. In the next step DFT calculations were used to estimate migration barriers and internal energy contributions to the thermodynamic properties and calculations based on empirical potentials were used to estimate defect formation and migration entropies (i.e. pre-exponentials). The diffusivities calculated for out-of-pile conditions as function of the UO 2 ± x non-stoichiometry were used to validate the accuracy of the diffusion models and the DFT calculations against available experimental data. The Xe diffusivity is predicted to depend strongly on the UO 2 ± x non-stoichiometry due to a combination of changes in the preferred Xe trap site and in the concentration of uranium vacancies enabling Xe diffusion, which is consistent with experiments. After establishing the validity of the modeling approach, it was used for studying Xe diffusion under in-pile conditions, for which experimental data is very scarce. The radiation-enhanced Xe diffusivity is compared to existing empirical models. Finally, the predicted fission gas diffusion rates were implemented in the BISON fuel performance code and fission gas release from a Riso fuel rod irradiation experiment was simulated.

Abstract

The formation of porous CRUD deposits on nuclear reactor fuel rods, a longstanding problem in the operation of pressurized water reactors (PWRs), is a significant challenge to science-based multiscale modeling and simulation. While existing, published studies have focused on individual or loosely coupled processes, such as heat transfer, fluid flow, and compound dissolution/precipitation, none have addressed their coupled effects sufficiently to enable a comprehensive, scientific understanding of CRUD. Here we present the formulation and results of a model, MAMBA-BDM, which begins to incorporate mechanistic details in describing CRUD in PWRs. CRUD is treated as a chemical deposition process in an environment of variable concentration, an arbitrary level of heating, and a complex fractal-based flow geometry. We present results on spatial distributions of temperature, pressure, velocity, and concentration that give insight into the interplay between these physical properties and geometrical parameters. We show the role of heat convection which has not been discussed previously. Furthermore, we suggest that the assumption of liquid saturation in the CRUD deserves scrutiny, as a result of our attempt to determine an effective CRUD thermal conductivity.

Abstract

Fission gas production and evolution significantly impact the fuel performance, causing swelling, a reduction in the thermal conductivity and fission gas release. However, typical empirical models of fuel properties treat each of these effects separately and uncoupled. Here, we couple a fission gas release model to a model of the impact of fission gas on the fuel thermal conductivity. To quantify the specific impact of grain boundary (GB) bubbles on the thermal conductivity, we use atomistic and mesoscale simulations. Atomistic molecular dynamic simulations were employed to determine the GB thermal resistance. These values were then used in mesoscale heat conduction simulations to develop a mechanistic expression for the effective GB thermal resistance of a GB containing gas bubbles, as a function of the percentage of the GB covered by fission gas. The coupled fission gas release and thermal conductivity model was implemented in Idaho National Laboratory’s BISON fuel performance code to model the behavior of a 10-pellet LWR fuel rodlet, showing how the fission gas impacts the UO2 thermal conductivity. Furthermore, additional BISON simulations were conducted to demonstrate the impact of average grain size on both the fuel thermal conductivity and the fission gas release. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Uranium silicides, in particular U3Si2, are being explored as an advanced nuclear fuel with increased accident tolerance as well as competitive economics compared to the baseline UO2 fuel. Here we use density functional theory calculations and thermochemical analysis to assess the stability of U3Si2 with respect to non-stoichiometry reactions in both the hypo- and hyper-stoichiometric regimes. We find that the degree of non-stoichiometry in U3Si2 is much smaller than in UO2 and at most reaches a few percent at high temperature. Non-stoichiometry impacts fuel performance by determining whether the loss of uranium due to fission leads to a non-stoichiometric U3Si2±x phase or precipitation of a second U-Si phase. We also investigate the U5Si4 phase as a candidate for the equilibrium phase diagram.

Abstract

Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data., 18 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

Abstract

Radioactive decay within the solid state creates chemical environments which are typically incommensurate with the initial host structure. Using a combined theoretical and computational approach, we discuss this ‘transmutation problem’ in the context of the short-lived fission products Cs-137 and Sr-90. We show how a Kroger–Vink treatment is insufficient for understanding defects arising from transmutation, and present density functional theory data for chemical evolution within two prototypical hosts, CsCl and SrTiO3. While the latter has a strong driving force for phase separation with increasing Zr content, the Cs(Ba)Cl system is surprisingly stable. The sharp difference between these two findings points to the need for better understanding of novel chemistry in nuclear waste forms.

Abstract

We report test beam studies of {11\,\%} of the production ATLAS Tile Calorimeter modules. The modules were equipped with production front-end electronics and all the calibration systems planned for the final detector. The studies used muon, electron and hadron beams ranging in energy from 3~GeV to 350~GeV. Two independent studies showed that the light yield of the calorimeter was $\sim 70$~pe/GeV, exceeding the design goal by {40\,\%}. Electron beams provided a calibration of the modules at the electromagnetic energy scale. Over 200~calorimeter cells the variation of the response was {2.4\,\%}. The linearity with energy was also measured. Muon beams provided an intercalibration of the response of all calorimeter cells. The response to muons entering in the ATLAS projective geometry showed an RMS variation of 2.5\,\% for 91~measurements over a range of rapidities and modules. The mean response to hadrons of fixed energy had an RMS variation of {1.4\,\%} for the modules and projective angles studied. The response to hadrons normalized to incident beam energy showed an {8\,\%} increase between 10~GeV and 350~GeV, fully consistent with expectations for a non-compensating calorimeter. The measured energy resolution for hadrons of $\sigma/E = 52.9\,\%/\sqrt{E} \oplus 5.7\,\%$ was also consistent with expectations. Other auxiliary studies were made of saturation recovery of the readout system, the time resolution of the calorimeter an d the performance of the trigger signals from the calorimeter.

Abstract

Nuclear nonproliferation, medical imaging and high energy physics activities require next generation scintillator materials with improved energy resolution, stopping power, linearity of response and speed. Such materials can be obtained either through the discovery of new compounds or through the optimization of existing materials. Atomistic simulation techniques can make valuable contributions to the optimization of scintillator materials by improving the fundamental understanding of defect structure. Once the defects that contribute to performance limitations have been identified, it becomes easier to remove them from the system; atomistic simulation can also be used to guide the process. In this paper, defects originating from intrinsic disorder, non-stoichiometry, activation, impurities and intentional co-doping in oxide scintillators are discussed. In particular, results are presented for the material systems: RE 2 O 3 bixbyites, REAlO 3 perovskites and RE 3 Al 5 O 12 garnets (where RE represents a 3+ cation ranging in size from Sc 3 + to La 3 + ). The propensity for these point defects to cluster is also discussed.

Abstract

Atomic-scale simulations have been employed to predict the site solution preference of Bi3+ activator cations in a series of RE2O3 scintillators with the bixbyite crystal structure (Ialpha3), where RE denotes a 3+ cation ranging in size from Sc3+ to La3+ . There are two crystallographically unique cation sites in the bixbyite structure, in Wyckoff notation referred to as the 24d and 8b site. It is expected that the spectroscopic properties of an activator cation residing on the 24d site will be different from the same activator cation residing on the 8b site, due to the distinct symmetries (C2 and S6 respectively) of these two sites. Previous studies have revealed two different Bi3+ emissions in Y2O3 corresponding to Bi3+ cations occupying both lattice 24d and 8b sites. By predicting the energy difference of the Bi3+ solution on the 24d and 8b sites, we are able to predict the distribution of Bi3+ in a range of bixbyite compounds.

Abstract

In order to enhance capabilities for the reliable detection of nuclear material, improved detector materials are required. There is considerable room for improvement within the scintillator family of materials. However, native defects are present in all materials and impurities are similarly common. In scintillators, these defects serve as trap sites for electrons or holes, and therefore may contribute to decreased and delayed light yield. In fact, Lempicki and Bartram [J. Lumin. 81 (1999) 13] have proposed that understanding defect related phenomena is vital to the improvement of scintillators. It follows that if the most egregious electron/hole trapping defects are removed from the system, light output should increase. However, defect removal is difficult to achieve since often the defect-type to be removed is not known. In this paper, we assist the optimization of scintillators by employing atomic scale simulation techniques to predict the intrinsic defect structure of RE 3 Al 5 O 12 garnets (where RE ranges from Lu to Gd and Y). Specifically, we predict cation antisite defects to be the lowest energy intrinsic defect. Furthermore, we describe how our results can be used to interpret experimental observations.

Abstract

Atomic scale computer simulation is used to study four defect related processes across a broad range of A 2 3 + B 2 4 + O 7 composition that exhibit pyrochlore or the parent fluorite structures. The first set of results concern the energy for a local disorder process, through which the compositional ranges of stability of the structures are discussed. Second, the propensity of a given composition to exhibit either trivalent excess or tetravalent excess non-stoichiometry is considered. Third, the volume expansion upon transformation from pyrochlore to fluorite or pyrochlore to amorphous is presented. Lastly, the activation energy for oxygen ion migration is determined and the migration mechanisms considered. All these processes have a bearing on the propensity of a composition to resist radiation induced amorphisation. By considering the relative energies and volume changes as a function of composition these simulations identify regions of compositional significance.

Abstract

A Time-of-Flight (TOF) detector, based on plastic scintillators and fine-mesh photomultipliers, has been added to the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF)-II experiment at the Tevatron pp collider. The primary physics motivation is to provide charged kaon identification to improve neutral B meson flavor determination. Besides that, the TOF detector found application in the CDF trigger system in implementation of highly ionizing particle, high multiplicity and cosmic rays triggers.

Abstract

Atomistic simulations have been employed to study the effect of BO2 (fluorite) incorporation into the bixbyite oxide Y2O3. The energetically preferred defect mechanism and the associated lattice parameter changes that occur from BO2 doping have been predicted. The addition of Group IV elements into Y2O3 can follow three different mechanisms. The energetically favourable method is through a O i ″ mediated reaction for ZrO2 and HfO2 while for TiO2 and CeO2, reducing B 4 + to B 3 + provides the lowest energy reaction. ZrO2 and HfO2 doping results in the lowest volume changes.

Abstract

Bremsstrahlung is produced in electron storage rings when the particle beam interacts with the storage ring components or with the residual gas molecules in the storage ring vacuum. The interaction of the particle beam with the gas molecules occurs continuously during storage ring operation. At straight sections of a storage ring, the gas bremsstrahlung contribution from each interaction adds up to produce a narrow monodirectional photon beam that travels down the beamlines. At the Advanced Photon Source (APS), where the stored electron beam energy is 7 GeV, gas bremsstrahlung generated in the straight sections of the insertion device beamlines, which is a total of 15.38 m in effective length, can be significant. This paper presents the results of the bremsstrahlung spectrum and energy measurements from the insertion device beamlines of the APS using a hermetic lead glass calorimeter. The calorimeter consists of 25 lead glass blocks, each 6.3 cm × 6.3 cm × 35 cm, stacked into a 5 × 5 array. Phototubes connected to the lead glass blocks collected the signals. The calorimeter is calibrated using the maximum energy of the observed bremsstrahlung spectrum. The total energy radiated and the bremsstrahlung spectrum were measured as a function of the storage ring beam current for both electrons and positrons of 7 GeV energy. Vacuum in the straight section was continuously monitored, and measurements to determine the nature of the residual gas inside the storage ring were performed. The measured bremsstrahlung spectra are fitted to a function that shows an approximate 1 E behavior. The gas bremsstrahlung rate from the APS undulator beamline straight path of 15.38 m is measured as 60.0 ± 2.0 GeV/s/nT/mA. Significant contribution of bremsstrahlung from sources other than the residual gas molecules is observed. The maximum bremsstrahlung energy measured in a beamline during the experiment is 369.0 ± 22.0 GeV/s/nT/mA.

Abstract

A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q 2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton ( γ ∗ p ) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10−6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10−5, corresponding to a range in the γ ∗ p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented.

Abstract

Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SS}}$,${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SL}}$=${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LS}}$, ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LL}}$, and ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{NN}}$ for neutron-proton elastic scattering. These data were obtained with a free polarized neutron beam, a polarized proton target, and a large magnetic spectrometer for the outgoing proton. The neutron beam kinetic energies were 484, 567, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. Combining these results with earlier measurements allows the determination of the pure spin observables ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SS}}$, ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LS}}$, and ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LL}}$ at 484, 634, and 788 MeV for c.m. angles 25\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{\le}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$\ensuremath{\le}180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} and at 720 MeV for 35\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{\le}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$\ensuremath{\le}80\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. Abstract

Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. Abstract

A Time-of-Flight detector (TOF), with a technique based on plastic scintillators and finemesh photomultipliers, has been added to the CDF-II experiment. The main physics motivation is to improve neutral B meson flavor determination by K± identification. The expected time resolution is 100 ps, which provides at least two standard deviations separation between K± and π± for momenta p < 1.6 Gev/cand better than 1.2 standard deviations separation over all momenta when combining TOF identification with dE/dx identification using the new drift chamber.

Abstract

The CDF II detector contains a time-of-flight detector consisting of 216 scintillator bars of 279 cm length and 4×4 cm2 cross-section located at a radius of 138 cm from the beam axis. The bars are installed on the inner surface of the CDF solenoid, which produces an axial field of 1.4 T. Nineteen-stage fine-mesh photomultiplier tubes are attached at both ends of the scintillator bars. Photostatistics limit the time-of-flight resolution, which is expected to be 100 ps. The primary physics motivation is K± identification for improved neutral B meson flavor determination.

Abstract

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20 to 350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudorapidity values in the range 0.2-0.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit.

Abstract

The response of pions and protons in the energy range of 20–180 GeV, produced at CERN's SPS H8 test-beam line in the ATLAS iron–scintillator Tile hadron calorimeter, has been measured. The test-beam configuration allowed the measurement of the longitudinal shower development for pions and protons up to 20 nuclear interaction lengths. It was found that pions penetrate deeper in the calorimeter than protons. However, protons induce showers that are wider laterally to the direction of the impinging particle. Including the measured total energy response, the pion-to-proton energy ratio and the resolution, all observations are consistent with a higher electromagnetic energy fraction in pion-induced showers. The data are compared with GEANT4 simulations using several hadronic physics lists. The measured longitudinal shower profiles are described by an analytical shower parametrization within an accuracy of 5–10%. The amount of energy leaking out behind the calorimeter is determined and parametrized as a function of the beam energy and the calorimeter depth. This allows for a leakage correction of test-beam results in the standard projective geometry.

Abstract

The ZEUS barrel calorimeter consists of 32 wedge-shaped modules constructed using alternate layers of depleted uranium and scintillator with one radiation length sampling. In this paper we summarize tests made on 22 of these modules by measuring their response to hardened cosmic rays. We describe the cosmic ray facility, the data taking, the track reconstruction, the data analysis and the module testing. These tests include the uniformity, both tower-to-tower and module-to-module, in the response to minimum ionizing particles, the mapping of this response as a function of lateral position of the particles inside a given tower, and the measurement of the number of photoelectrons produced by a minimum ionizing particle. In addition, we present data on the stability of the current in the photomultiplier tube generated by the natural radioactivity of the uranium.

Abstract

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4.

A 24-element plastic scintillation counter hodoscope for np elastic and total cross section measurements at LAMPF is described. Details of construction, electronics, calibration with cosmic ray muons, and a determination of absolute detection efficiency at 289 and 435 MeV are presented.

Abstract

We present the mechanical design and construction techniques used in building the barrel calorimeter for the ZEUS detector. The latter is currently under construction for use at the HERA electron-proton colliding beam facility. The calorimeter consists of 32 wedge shaped modules with approximate dimensions of 3×0.5×1.7 m 3 . The modules use alternate layers of depleted uranium and scintillator with one radiation length sampling. The light is collected via wavelength shifter plates placed on the sloping sides of the modules and read out by photomultiplier tubes located at the outer radius. The unit cell dimensions result in a ratio e h = 1 which yields an optimal energy resolution for hadronic jets. The placing of the structural components and the arrangement of the cracks between modules were chosen to maximize the uniformity of the response. Details of the construction and assembly effort needed to realize the total calorimeter are given. We finally describe the procedures used for transporting the completed modules to DESY and to install them on ZEUS.

Abstract

ATLAS; The Tile Calorimeter, which constitutes the central section of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter, is a non-compensating sampling device made of iron and scintillating tiles. The construction phase of the calorimeter is nearly complete, and most of the effort now is directed toward the final assembly and commissioning in the underground experimental hall. The layout of the calorimeter and the tasks carried out during construction are described, first with a brief reminder of the requirements that drove the calorimeter design. During the last few years a comprehensive test-beam program has been followed in order to establish the calorimeter electromagnetic energy scale, to study its uniformity, and to compare real data to Monte Carlo simulation. The test-beam setup and first results from the data are described. During the test-beam period in 2004, lasting several months, data have been acquired with a complete slice of the central ATLAS calorimeter. The data collected in the test-beam are crucial in order to study algorithms for hadronic energy reconstruction using single particles. The generalization of these algorithms to reconstruct jet energies will be the starting point for numerous physics studies in which jets play a leading role. The results obtained in applying these algorithms to simulated di-jet events are given in the last section of the note.

Abstract

A fully compensating uranium—scintillator calorimeter was constructed for the ZEUS detector at HERA. Several of the barrel calorimeter modules were subjected to beam tests at Fermilab before shipping them to DESY for installation. The calibrations of the modules used beams of electrons and hadrons, measuring the uniformity of the response, and checking the resolution. The runs also provided opportunity to test a large fraction of the actual ZEUS calorimeter readout system in an integrated beam environment more than one year before HERA turn on. The experiment utilized two computer controlled mechanical structures, one of which was capable of holding up to four modules in order to study shower containment, and a magnetic spectrometer with a high resolution beam tracking system. During two running periods, beams of 6 to 110 GeV containing e, μ, π, and p were used. The results show energy resolutions of 35%/ E for hadrons and 19%/ E for electrons, uniformities at the 1% level, energy nonlinearity less than 1%, and equal response for electrons and hadrons.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the mass difference m(D-s(+))-m(D+), where both the D-s(+) and D+ are reconstructed in the phipi(+) decay channel. This measurement uses 11.6 pb(-1) of data collected by CDF II using the new displaced-track trigger. The mass difference is found to be m(D-s(+))-m(D+)=99.41+/-0.38(stat)+/-0.21(syst) MeV/c(2).

Abstract

We have built a novel device for precision measurements of luminosity in the CDF experiment at the high p(p) over bar collision rates expected during Run II. The detector consists of long, conical, gaseous Cherenkov counters that point to the collision region and monitor the average number of inelastic p(p) over bar interactions by measuring the number of particles, and their arrival time, in each bunch crossing. For these primary particles, using isobutane at atmospheric pressure as a radiator, a large amount of Cherenkov light (similar to 100 photoelectrons) will be collected, with good amplitude and time resolutions, onto small and efficient PMTs. Suitable amplitude thresholds will be applied to discriminate from non-primary particles and other backgrounds which yield little light in the counters. Abstract

A study of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass spectrum in ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}.$ The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{e}^{+}X$ and ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are presented as a function of the ${e}^{+}q$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}q$ branching ratios. These limits are used to constrain the production of leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks.

Abstract

A Time-of-Flight detector (TOF) has been incorporated into the CDF-II experiment in order to provide charged kaon identification to improve neutral B meson flavor determination. With an expected time-of-flight resolution of 100 ps, the system will be able to provide 2 standard deviation separation between K± and π± for momenta p < 1.6 GeV/c, complementing the specific ionization energy loss dE/dx measured with the new drift chamber.

Abstract

The first measurement of inclusive Ds+- photoproduction at HERA has been performed with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 130 < W < 280 GeV. The measured cross section for 3 < pt(Ds) < 12 GeV and |eta(Ds)|< 1.5 is sigma(ep -> Ds X) = 3.79 +- 0.59 (stat.) +0.26-0.46 (syst.) +- 0.94 (br.) nb, where the last error arises from the uncertainty in the Ds decay branching ratio. The measurements are compared with inclusive D*+- photoproduction cross sections in the same kinematic region and with QCD calculations. The Ds cross sections lie above a fixed-order next-to-leading order calculation and agree better with a tree-level O(alpha,alpha_s^3) calculation that was tuned to describe the ZEUS D* cross sections. The ratio of Ds+- to D*+- cross sections is 0.41 +- 0.07 (stat.) +0.03-0.05 (syst.) +- 0.10 (br.). From this ratio, the strangeness-suppression factor in charm photoproduction, within the LUND string fragmentation model, has been calculated to be gamma_s = 0.27 +- 0.05 +- 0.07 (br.).
